Creating Animated lines and text on HD timeline... converting to SD DVD

Hi, we are filming with XDCAM EX1 cameras, with the end result to be output as NTSC DVD tutorials, Online, DVD-ROM, and Ipod/WMV cross platform.
The project requires (at this point) an animated music score that scrolls from left to right on an off white background. The score has black stave lines, black notes and tab, with blue fingering numbers.
I have been testing this for the last few months... and have not yet found a suitable solution... what my client wants is for the edit process to be done in HD so that when HD becomes popular we can easily re-release in Blue-ray. Therefore we have been editing on a HD timeline using footage that is filmed 1080/30p, then outputting to SD. The client also wants the DVD to be viewable on Cathode ray interlaced TV, as well as Plasma/LCD progressive scan screens, and to still be readable on a computer monitor when a user plays the DVD using their Laptop/PC/Macs DVD player.
Up till now I can get a decent result if created using progressive scan, on LCD and computer moniter using DVD, but then the interlaced TV looks crap. Alternatively I can get a good result with interlaced footage on the cathode ray, yet the LCD suffers, and the computer monitor looks crap.
I realise that what we are doing is something that is quite difficult to perfect, but we are not after perfect results all round, we just want something that is acceptable on all three scenarios. Out difficulty is of course working with thin black text & lines on a off-white BG and animating them left to right.
Is there anyone out there with experience in similar projects, or does anyone have any ideas that perhaps we haven't tried yet (believe me we have tried a lot), I would really appreciate any constructive feedback... Thank You... B

I like to convert to SD in FCP because it's easier to jump around and try things within one application.
So if the titles aren't working well at SD resolution, I can tweak them. If I want to crop things
differently, I can play with the motion tabs. When I use Quicktime Same Settings to export the SD sequence, I get a master file that looks like my FCP project.
At that point, I can focus on compression as a separate problem. I can try different Compressor
settings without having to go back to FCP. Having a single master file also makes it easier
to do alternate versions for the web or ipod.

You'd just make the video layers into 3D layers and animate them and move the camera around them.
The text can be animated using per-character 3D animation.
Since you're new to After Effects, I strongly recommend that you start here to learn After Effects.

It is rasterizing the PDF at the resolution you tell it to, unless it's an image only PDF - then the image will be opened as-is.

Creating multiple lines of text that can be edited by one line

I was editing a file in illustrator that a past designer set up and he set it up so that there are multiple lines in a column of text that are linked some how so that the first line of text can be edited and the rest will change with it. How do you set it up to do this?

I actually needed to know how to basically set up one text box created and than copied 10 times in a column but the top text field can be edited. When the top one is edited it automatically changes all of the other rows as well at the same time. I appreciate you getting back to me though. I figured it out.
Basically what you have to do is create your initial text field. With the text box selected you go to your appearances panel and click on the effects icon at the bottom of the panel and choose Distort & Transform > Transform. Then in the transform dialogue box you choose how far you want the copied text boxes to move (to the right or left) and then how many copies you would like and hit Copy. Than all you have to do is edit the first text box and all of them will change at the same time.
It is actually a pretty neat feature and will save me a lot of time when setting up some projects.

Adding "black" lines and text to image scans

I'm currently running Acrobat 9 Pro, under XP.
I scan documents as black-and-white PDF image files. They usually contain handwritten text. OCR is not applicable (at least, as far as I know there's little if anything that currently exists that's realistic for doing OCR on hand-written text).
I just leave them as images of the handwritten text, and that's generally okay for my purposes.
However, I often want to go in and "edit" a little bit of that handwritten text -- just a few words here and there -- either by sometimes crossing things out or sometimes deleting them (or whiting them out, or covering them with a white box), and adding a text box with new typed text either over or between existing handwritten text..
I know how to do most of that (well, I could use a few pointers on deleting or whiting out handwritten words), but I don't know how to make it all "black" so it tends to blend better with the color of the scan itself. Currently, lines I draw and text I enter appear red. How do I make them appear black so it blends better?
Can I do that?
Or do I need to upgrade to be able to do that?

I'm not sure we're on the same page. I already have no probelm drawing a white box to cover existing text (remember, this is all "images" since I'm just scanning in handwritten pages and not using OCR on them at all) and I can already draw a text frame to enter text into, just as I can already draw lines to cross things out that I don't want to just cover with a white box. I'm just looking for a way to make that text and those lines black instead of red (and for anything else that might make the process more elegant).

Is it possible to have icons for the main forward/back toolbar line and text only for the bookmark line in the toolbars?

In the customizing toolbars section it looks like you can either have icons and text, icons only or text only.
I'd like to have the toolbar with the back/forward buttons, home button, etc. be icon only and the toolbar below, which is the bookmark bar to be text only. I don't see how to do this.

Creating contour lines within text

I am trying to create artwork for use in a laser machine. I have some directions on how to create it in Corel, but I'm Illustrator based and I can't seem to convert the terminology over to Illustrator. I'm trying to create text that is filled with contour lines so that when it's sent to the laser it will vector engrave the fill instead of doing a solid fill with the raster etching. Attached is a picture that might help explain what I need to accomplish. Thanks in advance for the help.

Basically, you can work with Object>Path>Offset Path with a negative value equalling the distance between lines.
There may/will be some adaptations when the shapes switch from following the whole shapes to partial shapes.
You may:
1) Create the live Type;
2) Type>Create Outlines, then switch from fill to a suitable stroke;
3) Object>Path>Offset Path as many times as needed, possibly switching to partial shapes for the last bits, possibly using Object>Compound Path>Release.
Below is the result up to the final adaptation for a 72pt Helvetica with a Stroke weight of 0.5pt and an offset of -1pt. The innermost bits of the B, a, and b, form Compound Paths which must be released so you can work on with each bit individually. You may also delete and replace parts and use simpler paths, such as curved paths in B, curved and curved/straight paths in a, and curved and straight paths in b.

Objects (lines) and text boxes are not able to be made bigger or smaller

first of all: For no reason at all, all of my text boxes are now set up as threaded text. I dont know how that turned on. When i go to "type"
and try to select "threaded text" it wont allow me to select it - it is not highlighted. So I have no clue
how to turn this off. Now I can not stretch my text boxes to suit whats in them - ie: make them bigger or smaller, ie: there are only two boxes to drag - one at either side of text box and they wont allow me to drag them to make the box bigger - only to move the entire box (before there were 4 boxes to manipulate the size of the text box - one on each corner - now there are only two) and this seems to apply
to many other objects now. when i draw a line, I have to make sure that line is the exact right size because once i draw it - it wont allow me to make it bigger or smaller - it only allows me to move it to a different place - i dont understand what is happening

i am pretty sure it is area type because in type i can see "area type options"
i dont know how to turn bounding boxes on or off so I can not answer that question.
yes i should be able to resize the bounding text box by dragging and ive always been able to do that. however I can no longer do that. the usual bounding text box that i am accustomed to has little teeny boxes all around the entire box - in each corner - so i can drag each corner easily
this set up that has currenly taken over my illustrator program has only TWO little teeny weeny boxes that when selected wont allow me to drag them to resize at all. when i double click on one of these two little teeny boxes it gives me the thread text tool... which i dont want and have never even used before
i just want my text boxes and everything else to go back to normal so i can drag them to resize them again
does that make more sense or have i explained it better?

I have to make these fields required and take the data back from the screen and write it in a file. The second thing that I have to do is to make radio buttons for the user to select whether he wants the file written on the application server or the presentation server. and process the report accordingly. Now can somebody please given some code and tell me how I should do this. Both the things have to be done for the same report. Please help.

Problem creating inputs, outputs and text in Scilab Script Block

I have recently installed the Labview to Scilab Gateway. I am running Labview 11.0 and Scilab 5.3.3. The example files run properly, However, when I try to define any inputs, or outputs, there is no option to add the ports. The block also ignores any text I type in it or copy to it. I have been trying this on a blank vi.

I have a few more questions to help us debug this issue. You said you tried the same right-click procedure to create inputs and outputs on a normal script block and it worked as expected. What specifically do you mean by a "normal script block"?
How did you drop the empty Scilab script node on a blank VI? Did you drop it from a palette or paste it from another VI?
Can you post an image of your Help >> About LabVIEW screen (feel free to obscure your name, company, and license number)? If not, can you provide the LabVIEW version number specified from that screen? There have been a few patches to LabVIEW 2011 and it will help us to reproduce the issue if we know exactly which version you have. Also on that screen, do you have LabVIEW Base, Full, or Professional (or maybe an Evaluation or Student edition)? The Scilab script node will not work in LabVIEW Base and the right-click menu will look as you describe. You can verify your LabVIEW activation in the NI License Manager.
Do you have any other versions of LabVIEW installed on your computer? Is LabVIEW 2011 the most recent LabVIEW you installed? How about previous versions of Scilab? Do any previous versions remain or did you remove a previous version of Scilab AFTER installing Scilab 5.3.3?

Newbie-How to select sketch lines and text

Am more familiar with Photoshop. I have a jpeg sketch of a river channel.
1.I need to make it deeper and add "concrete" lines down into the channel banks.How to do that since I cannot seem to select anything in the sketch.
When I make it deeper it will go off the boundary of the original image.How to also make the whole sketch longer or change its size.

Janet, if (as it sounds) you are expecting to edit this JPEG image in Illustrator, you really need to just start reading the documentation to learn what Illustrator is all about and to learn your way around it. Illustrator is not a pixel editor.
If, on the other hand, you intend to use this JPEG raster image as the basis for something you intent to draw in Illustrator, consider posting a link to the image so others can gain a sense of what you're talking about.

How do I create a line chart direct from xml or convert xml to ArrayCollection

The xml is simple:

it's dynamically generated as a string so could be created in xml format, or ArrayCollection, or any other format that works. However I can't find a example of using xml as the datasource that works. I've tried to convert it to an ArrayCollection first but that didn't work either.
Alternatively I could store the data as a string "Month: "May", Profit: 2400, Expenses: 575, Amount: 456", then:
expensesAC2.addItem({Month: "May", Profit: 2400, Expenses: 575, Amount: 456 });
works but:
var settings:String = resultXML.row[0];
expensesAC2.addItem({settings});
doesn't work. Any suggestions, or links to a tutorial that works would be really appreciated?

This issue was resolved off-line, however, I wanted to note a few points that were shared with me.
Learnings from Forum discussion:
Best practice is to use a combination of INDEX and MATCH functions instead of Vlookups. Using the VLOOKUP function can result in a very slow dashboard if using a lot of data.
Also, when using the Filter Component note the destination field as the filter component does not copy the first filter value at all so you have to adjust by one column to accommodate for this (two columns if you have 3 filters etc).
