Creating autonumber (CS3)

Hello!
I have had this question for ages and I have not managed to find a solution for it in InDesign. I assume, it is my ignorance.
I need to create catalogues of items. Items are grouped. For each item should run overall ID (over the whole document) and group ID (inside the given sub-document). This should run through the whole indb document (each group is a separate indd file).
So far I have renumbered it manually, but it means a lot of work in case of changes and also large possibility for human error.
Can anyone guide me - how can I create such elements?
I also looked through the scripting introduction document and found no direct solutions from there either.
Thus - I need to create:
Group 1 (document 1)
1     1     Item
2     2     Item
n     n     Item
Group 2 (document 2)
n+1     1     Item
n+2     2     Item
n+m     m     Item
Group x (document x)
n+m+..+1     1     Item
n+m+..+2     2     Item
n+m+o         o     Item
Thanks a lot!

Hi!
That's what I thought..
NR-1 changes its number, if it moves in the list of items. It is important, that I can point to that specific item by [2011-XX-1]. It is not important, if it has another number in another year.
Basically - I give out each year 1 or more catalogues on various subjects. ID is for identifying an item within that year (edition). It is no problem, if in edition 2003 it was 103 and in 2011 it is 165.
As those catalogues are big work for one person to compile and structurize, they need a lot of rework, before they are finished. At the same time, it is not good to leave them un-numbered until the print as then it is very hard to read the manuscript.
So I need to change the items, but keep the numbers. And I do need to splid the idenfiers - sometimes there maybe from a-h parallel items with the same number.
The more I try to find a solution the more I see, there is none.. Wisdoming process has not changed
As Peter S. implied, changing a catalog item's number from one edition to another can be confusing for users who know the items by their numbers, and who receive new editions periodically. If this is your preferred method, so be it.
As I noted earlier, a spreadsheet or database approach is probably applicable to a lesser or greater degree, at least in cases where the items and their identifiers are constant.
I searched Google for "control break programming" without quotes; the term "control break" describes what is sometimes also known as a "cascading sort," or a "hierarchical sort." If you are familiar with some of the US-based TV police-forensic programs that feature techs filtering inconceivably-huge amounts of data to instantly identify suspects who fit a complex series of properties -  for example, three-fingered left-handed redheads violent robbers who've been paroled or released from prisons in states that don't apply salt compounds to their roads in snow season, and who were truants in middle school - you get the idea. All the fictional available databases are sorted to filter out those who fit all the categories. A full report of this kind of search is grouped by more-general properties, say non-road-salting states, then by more-and-more-specific properties within more-general properties. In reports, each property-group change is considered a control break - the controlling property group is exhausted, and another takes over. There's an example on page 19 of this document that turned up in my Google search: http://www.cerritos.edu/dmellas/cis103/chap07-mod.pdf The discussion of control-break programming in balance of the document may be more information than you need.
It's still not clear to me how you assign your identifiers, the ones you want to keep constant through one edition only; if they're autonumbers, they will change when rearranged. You may be OK with usi the numbers automatically the first time you collect the content, but to keep them constant, you'll need to use Type > Bullets & Numbering > Convert  Numbers to Text on selected autonumbered content.

  • How do I edit image viewer slideshow created in CS3, in CS4?

I apologize for posting this twice...once in a previous post and once here. The reason being...the other post was old (2008) and I'm afraid it might get overlooked. So I thought I'd create a new discussion.
I created a bunch  of slideshows in CS3 using Insert - Media - Image Viewer. I was looking  for an easy way for my client to update the site themselves. Even  though it creates a Flash element, it is easy for them to go in and  switch out the images. All they do is click on the slideshow box, hit  Window - Tag Inspector and click on the little folder at the side of the  Image URLs' line. Nothing could be simpler. Well...I went in to see my  client to show her how to do this but she has CS4. When I tried to do  the same thing, nothing looked the same. The tag inspector did not have  the same elements in it at all. Does this mean she cannot edit the  slideshows I have created? Ugh...
If anyone can help  with a work around to this...I'd be very grateful!
    Thanks.
    Pam

Thanks for your reply via e-mail David. I tried to reply but it's a no reply address so I'm posting here:
Do you happen to know if my client who has CS4 would be able to open the slideshows I created in CS3 using the method mentioned here:
    http://help.adobe.com/en_US/Bridge/3.0/WSCF044571-2772-4d28-9EBD-2C9F46AF008A.html
Not having CS4, I can't even play around with it to see. Or will the slideshows have to be recreated in CS4? Has my work in CS3 over the months gone to waste in other words?
Alternatively, would it be better for us both to purchase a $29 Dreamweaver extension such as the one below, so we could both access the slideshow from CS3 and CS4 at the same time?
    http://www.dwuser.com/flashslideshow/v3/
I need to keep building the new site using the slideshows while she maintains the old site (no slideshows) until we upload the new site this summer. I don't want to continue building slideshows she cannot access.
Thanks a lot for your help!

  • Can't open files created in CS3 with CS4

When I try to open a file that was created in CS3 I get this message:
Cannot open the file "OpenEnrollSample.indd". Adobe InDesign may not suport the file format, a plug-in that supports the file format may be issing, or the file may be open in another application.
This goes for both the InDesign files and the PDF files created with them. Does anyone have any idea why this is happening? Thanks for any help.

My Acrobat that is part of CS4 won't open the PDFs created by the CS3 InDesign file.  However, I do have the plugin to open PDFs in InDesign and that doesn't work with these files either.
These are files I created so I know that they are InDesign files.
I am running OS 10.6.8 and using CS4.

Problem solved. It helps to use CS5 to open a CS5 document. When you use the right key, the door opens. Lesson: Don't store installation discs of inactive versions with installation discs of current versions.

  • Re: Illustrator CS5.5 - Will edit but cannot save .ai files created in CS3

Hi!  I recently installed Illustrator CS5.5 over CS3 (as part of a CS5.5 CS upgrade). I did not uninstall CS3, as I still sometimes need to use it with collegues who have not upgraded.  I am on a PC with Windows 7 (64 bit).
Today I opened an .ai file I had created in CS3 about 6 months ago, edited it and attempted to save it as a CS5 .ai file.  It would not alow this, popping up a message saying "Can't save the illustration!".
So, I attempted to save it as a CS3 .ai file, and recieved another error message.  In teh end, I just had to close down Illustartor and lose my work.  I will re-do it in CS3.
Anyone got any idea what the problem might be?
    Help!
    Cheers
    Angus

    Thanks for the response.
No mysteries here…… I just have a common or garden single home PC installation of Windows 7 (64 bit) and the file I was trying to use in CS5.5 is simply a series of charts (graphs) – each in a separate layer - that are then placed in a report.  File is 454 kb.

  • Seeing too much in PDF files created in CS3 AI

Hi - I just got Illustrator CS3,  after happily using CS2 for years.
I work "sloppy" - elements of  my design hang out over the edges of the artboard,
and I push  things out to the side in case I need them later.
This was  never a problem in CS2. When I would save as a PDF to send to a client,
all they would see was the artboard (defined by page setup).
In CS3, the  PDF I create shows  the client everything in the document!
Even if I throw a clipping mask  on it to make the extra stuff disappear,
the white space is in the  PDF.
I  found if I create the PDF through the print dialog box
the cropping works as it should, but I have no options  about
saving with compression, which means the files can be too  big to email.
This  is seriously messing with my workflow!!
Can someone tell me what I  am missing here?
    Thank you.

I started with a document converted up from CS2 - one I have used over and over
again and it worked fine for months in CS2.
I edit it in CS3 and save as a PDF, at any resolution, with or without AI editability... and
I can see the extra junk at the sides when I drag it into an email, when I open it in Acrobat, in the icon I see in the finder, and also if I drag and drop it back onto AI to open it. It's really and truly there, and it's consistent.
When I do the latter, the document setup size has actually CHANGED from the original 4x6 to 12x6!!
If I say "new document" - what, in that dialog box, would make it a web document?
I don't see anything related to that. I really don't think that's what is causing this.

  • Creating flash cs3 component

    Hi,
There is great and easy way to create flash based component
in flash cs3 using action script 3.0.
I am going to make a simple My button component which will
behave likely same as flash native button component.
You can modify this according your requirement this is just
you give an idea about how we can go for creating a component in
    flash cs3.
    Follow these steps…
    1. Create a fla file and save this file with any name
    2. Create a movieClip and draw a rectangle shape on first
    frame.
    3. Right click on movieclip in library, select linkage
    4. Provide class name in text field area [MyButton] (you can
use any name here which should matched with your class)
    5. Click Ok button
    6. Write class [MyButton]
(you can copy and use this)

Made new movie, on frame 2 places Full screen action, on
    frame 5 placed video component
and stop(); action attached to frame. Projector pops large
    following by video playing
    just fine.
I tried variety, first frame, many frames, all on one. Not

  • IPhoto not recognizing keywords created in CS3

I've added keywords to files (both psds and jpegs) I've created in Photoshop and Bridge (CS3). If I look at the file info in Finder, the keywords are there. But when I look at the info of the file in iPhoto, the keywords don't show. Also when I create a Smart Album to match the keywords, nothing shows.
    Any ideas?

You shouldn't reverse engineer answers from your initial hypothesis
Not what I did. I searched on Google and found only references to jpeg and tiff supporting IPTC and none to psd. Have you tried that? I'm not sure that the Finder supports IPTC data, only limited Exif.
Why would photoshop be writing for the benefit of the Apple operating system when it's cross platform?
Because they're nice people? Or because both Oses support basic metadata comments?

  • Java Dictionary Project + create autonumber for KEY field?

    Hi there,
I would like to create a Java Dictionary project that has a table with an AUTONUMBER as the key field.
I know exactly how to do this in SQL Server using the IDENTITY field but cannot see an option when using the Java Dictionary project?
    Any ideas?
    Thanks for the help
    Lynton

Has there been an update to this recently?  I am in need of exactly the same information.  The FAQ lists this:
<i>Can I deploy a Java Dictionary table along with the table content?
Yes. You can deliver the Java Dictionary table along the table content. There are two possibilities:
    Export from a reference database
Specification of the table entries in an XML file (since SP5)
Note that there is no modification support for table entries that are delivered in this way. Therefore, you can deliver table entries with program character or for examples, but not for templates or customizing data.</i>
Now, I may be reading the note incorrectly, but it makes it sound like if you do populate a table with a XML file, the records cannot be modified thereafter.  Is this true?
I'd also like to know how to develop the XML and where to put it, etc.  I've had no luck searching for this information.
    Thanks!

  • ASP insert then get newly created autonumber

    I'm using ASP Javascript & Access 2003 & Dreamweaver
    8
I want to insert a new record then grab the autonumber that
was generated for that record and pass it as a session variable to
the next page. From what I have read in this and many other forums
I can use "Select @@Identity as Identity" to do this. However, I
don't know where to place it in my code. I've tried placing it in
several locations but it hasn't worked. I figure it needs to go
before "MM_editCmd.ActiveConnection.Close();" to grab the right
record. If anyone can help me I would soooo appreciate it. OR if
you have an even better solution I would still sooooo appreciate
it. I know I can use "Select Max(column)" but I want to make sure

If you can get it to work, try this. This is the wrong way to
    do this,
but take a unique value from the submitted content (say
    email) and query
the db for the newest record with that value. In your case,
    SS would
    work (if it is required).
    Or you can try:
    http://www.tom-muck.com/extensions/help/insertretrieve/
Or, write your own INSERT statement and plug Select
    @@Identity as

  • Can't open CS3 documents I previously created with CS3

I have InDesign CS3, says 3.0.1 when it opens. I have been using it for several years, but not for about 4 months. Suddenly I am unable to open previous projects I created with this program. I get an error message from the content manager the same as if I was trying to open a CS3 document with CS2 -- upgrade your plug-ins or get the new version. If I click on configure plugins, everything seems fine. If I click on update, it says there is nothing to update.

Let's assume you have CS3. Do you also have CS?
I'm not sure if you're on a Mac or PC, but are the files linked to open with the right program? I created this situation for myself (on purpose) to prevent myself from opening a clients files in CS4.
Could you be launching a previous version?

  • Create Autonumber GUID using SQL Statment

    Hi Everyone,
I have an Access 2013 database. In it, I use SQL statements heavily in VBA to process transactions, modify system date, process updates etc. I am at a point where I would like to create a table with an SQL Statement. Sounds easy. Do it all the time. But
I want the ID field and PK to be an AutoNumber ReplicationID (or GUID).
It's easy enough to create an AutoNumber using the AUTOINCREMENT datatype in SQL and it's easy enough to create a ReplicationID field using the GUID data type. BUT ... I can't create an AutoNumber Replication ID field.
I have a function called GetGUID(). There are examples that I have found where using a simple function like that as the default value for the field should work but access keeps telling me that the function is not found or not valid.
The SQL statement that creates an AutoNumber (Long) looks like this:
    CREATE TABLE myTable
    ID AUTOINCREMENT PRIMARY KEY UNIQUE,
    Field1 VARCHAR(255) NOT NULL,
    Field2 GUID NOT NULL,
    SomeDate DATE,
    SomeTime TIME,
    Field3 VARCHAR(255),
If anyone can help make this script create an AutoNumber GUID, I would appreciate it.
P.S. I can create this using DAO Table Defs, but that doesn't fit with the DQL Statement based update process that I need it to.
    Cheers

You cannot use your own function GetGUID() in the default property of a field in a table. Only built-in functions are allowed, and GenGUID() is the built-in Access function to generate GUIDs.
The reason why you are gettting the #Error is explained in
    Alex Dybenko's Access Blog
Unfortunately, it is not possible to modify the Attributes property after the table has been created. But normally, such a GUID field is hidden from the user. If it doesn't bother you, just leave it as is. Otherwise, you will have to create an exact copy
of the table using DAO (and possibly ADOX) methods.

I have found stuff on specific errors but nothing that has proven successful for this.  Any help is appreciated.

I have displayed the captures of the screens that I got to when I looked at the printer properties for the Adobe PDF printer. I am looking at the properties in AA8 and there is a chance they are different in AA9.

  • Illustrator CS4 and CS3 crashing on two different mac's - can not save or print

We have two Macs running 10.5.6, with CS4 and CS3 installed. Both systems seem to be crashing today when trying to save, print, etc any file. Some files that were created in CS3 that are older seem to be opening and saving. But anything I know was worked on yesterday are having issues on both systems.
    Anyone have any ideas?
I have tried trashing the preferences, and also booting in safe mode and still get crashes.

I just tried an uninstall of Illustrator - then reinstall. Did not work either. Here is the report I am getting if anyone is interested:
