Creating Backups

Hallo.
I'm just backing up some stuff from my HDD. I don't have the luxury of an external drive, so i'm just burning all my stuff to what wrtitable disks I have lying around my desk.
If I wanted to back up my applications, can I just drag them from my Applications folder and onto the writable CD folder? If I do this, can I then drag the applications from the disk back on to my hard drive?

It really depends on the application. Some are self contained and it would work fine (although the .plist file wouldn't come with it). Some however wouldn't work or wouldn't work as expected.
Most people when doing simple back ups don't mess with applications because they either have the discs, or they can download them without much effort.
If you really want to back up save your home folder to a disc. That contains most everything you'll need to restore your Mac to "like now."

    I have been trying to use time machine on a new lacie 2tb usb 2 drive for back up. I continue to get: "unable to complete backup.An error occured while creating backup folder". When I use disk utility to repair I get another error message: unable to repair disk unmountable.
    Help me Obie One Canobie you are my last hope

    I have confused myself with the facts!  Started out keeping track of every step and every variable but have sort of lost it as we progress here.  First I quit all applications then swapped connections between mouse port and backup disk port to influence possible bad connections question.  Changed power outlet receptacle for the backup disk. Disabled the put-the-HD-to-sleep option.  Then powered down the computerator.
    Next started up computerator.  Turned Time Machine ON  and experienced multiple successful backups!  Then I started up a few applications, Mail and Text Edit (but not Safari so far).  Had a few more successes.  After each backup, I used Disk Utility to verify the backup disk is still OK.  This because the error about unable to unmount the backup disk seems to go hand in hand with Disk Utility finding the backup disk to be bad.
    Put computer to sleep for the night.  Upon starting up in the morning, and before doing anything else, I did a backup disk verification... BAD!   Did a restart and verified the backup disk... OK.
    Did a few    Sleep-bad, Restart -OK    repetitions.
    It seems consistent:  Sleeping the computer apparently messes up the backup disk but doing a Restart "repairs" it.
    =============================
    Now then, I don't understand everything I know here.  Methinks that maybe keeping the HD from sleeping during lulls in activity has allowed successful backups through the day but manually putting everything to sleep for the night causes a return to the problem of spinning-back-up-too-slowly (which was explained earlier).  Is there any truth in this?
    I may abandon this Seagate thing for something more compatible.  What's out there that we know works reliably for us?

    I want to know how to create a backup file (because I'm pretty new with itunes, and it's hard to use it for me still), how to store my app data/media/videos, etc. And how I can retrieve them back when I'm done with the app I tried on my friend's computer.
    If anyone can help, it'd be great! Thank you so much!

    Sure-glad to help you. You will not lose any data by changing synching to MacBook Pro from imac. You have set up Time Machine, right? that's how you'd do your backup, so I was told, and how I do my backup on my mac.  You should be able to set a password for it. Save it.  Your stuff should be saved there. So if you want to make your MacBook Pro your primary computer,  I suppose,  back up your stuff with Time machine, turn off Time machine on the iMac, turn it on on the new MacBook Pro, select the hard drive in your Time Capsule, enter your password, and do a backup from there. It might work, and it might take a while, but it should go. As for clogging the hard drive, I can't say. Depends how much stuff you have, and the hard drive's capacity.  As for moving syncing from your iMac to your macbook pro, should be the same. Your phone uses iTunes to sync and so that data should be in the cloud. You can move your iTunes Library to your new Macbook pro
    you should be able to sync your phone on your new MacBook Pro. Don't know if you can move the older backups yet-maybe try someone else, anyways,
    This handy article from Apple explains how
    How to move your iTunes library to a new computer - Apple Support''
    don't forget to de-authorize your iMac if you don't want to play purchased stuff there
    and re-authorize your new macBook Pro
    time machine is an application, and should be found in the Applications folder. it is built in to OS X, so there is nothing else to buy. double click on it, get it going, choose the Hard drive in your Time capsule/Airport as your backup Time Machine  and go for it.  You should see a circle with an arrow on the top right hand of your screen (the Desktop), next to the bluetooth icon, and just after the wifi and eject key (looks sorta like a clock face). This will do automatic backups  of your stuff.

    Hi,
    I'm running adobe digital editions on a Mac OS X 10.6.3 and I keep getting this error message whenever I open adobe digital editions.
    Error creating backup file: /Users/yongrufui/Documents/Digital Editions/backup_manifest.xml
    Error detail: Error #2038
    This message also appears when I go to Library view. And I can't load my new ebook either.
    Please help!

    I wish I had an answer, but I have the same problem.  My error is: Error Creating Backup File  c:windows\personal\MyDigital Editions\Backup_Manifest.xml
    Error Detail: Error #2038
    I've reported this to Adobe and someone is trying to resolve, but its been over 4 days now.  All of the suggestions provided so far haven't fix it.
    I get this error upon Launching ADE.  Always comes up on Launch, but I can move on by clicking OK.  However, all that does is remove the error message. Still cannot download books from library.

    mounted or unmounted? I suspect it's the former.
    I've never booted up from Leopard install disk. Can you give me steps?
    while the problem seems to be with your TM disk you can try repairing both of them from the install DVD. insert the DVD and reboot normally. hold "c" at the chime. you'll be booted into leopard installer. once past the language selection screen choose 'disk utility" from Utilities menu at the top.

  • Can't create backups anymore

    Hello,
    A while a go I disabled auto-backup using terminal by this command
    "com.apple.iTunes DeviceBackupsDisabled -bool true"
    Theoretically, to enable backups again I would just change it to false. BUT it didn't work!
    I get "-bash: com.apple.iTunes: command not found"
    I don't have "Back up" option when I right click on my iPhone in iTunes. It's gone.
    _*What do I do now? How do I create backups again?*_ I have also tried using disablebackup.app but didn't work either.

    It's not a lazy solution - it's a workable one. And it doesn't take very long either.
    A risk of terminal hacks is precisely this - that they have unintended consequences. If this is an Apple approved process, then report a bug to Apple. If it isn't, then whoever provided it should have put the usual disclaimer in about using at your own risk.
    I don't mean to dump on you, but I just think that, rationally, an iTunes reinstall that fixes the issue is more attractive than a drawn-out search for a compensating hack

  • Setting access for an account to create backups

    We are moving from creating backups via stsadm to a vendor backup product. That product runs with its own sa account.
    I was asked to add that account to the sharepoint farm admins group and I have done that.
    I just am wondering whether that account needs to have site collection admin privleges as well to be able to backup all the site collection data?
    If so, how do you handle that? typically a site collect has a primary and a secondary admin. Is there some way to set things up so that this specific sa account doesn't require being one of those 2 roles and still have the permissions needed to backup -
    and recover - SP items?
    Thanks for your opinions.

  • Can't create backup dvd ! Impossible de créer DVD de sauvegarde

    Hi, before formating my hard drive, i want to save my file, i go in "Files---Library" and i can't find option create backup DVD, got only Organize/export library or import liste , can you help me please ?

    That feature has thoughtfully been removed from 10.4. You will have to use some other process - external to iTunes - to back up your files now.

    What means "Error 17"?
    Any idea what went wrong?
    Hope you can help.

    That's the problem with using a 3d-party NAS with Time Machine; it has it's own software that's supposed to interact with OSX, and when something goes wrong, it can be very hard to sort out just what and where the problem is.
    First, make sure that model is fully compatible with Time Machine on Lion (some are, some aren't), and install any software/firmware updates Synology has for it.
    Second, make sure the names (of all odd things) of your Mac and network aren't too long and don't contain any special characters, per #C9 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.
    Third, make sure you're following Synology's instructions exactly.

    Several times today I have gotten a popup message. "Time Machine error while creating backup folder".  I click OK, and then the message appears again after a hour or so.  I am using a WD My Book external drive as my backup media.  I looked at the drive in Finder and the older (yesterday and beyond) backup folders are there.

  • Time Machine "could not create backup folder" error

    I recently changed to a new Time Machine drive (external LaCie Porsche 1TB) connected via USB to my early 2009 iMac running Lion.  I set up the drive with a single GUID partition, MacOS Extended (Journaled ) format, and copied my old Time Machine backups over from an older drive via the disk utility restore function.  The disk worked fine for a while, then after several backups I get recurring Time machine errors that tell me it cannot create a backup folder.  When I run Disk Utility to repair (after turning off Time Machine), it cannot unmount the disk.  After a force eject (required because I am told the disk is in use when trying to eject after a Time machine fail), the disk mounts, no problems are found by disk utility, and Time Machine works for awhile.  Then more of the same "cannot create backup folder" error.  The backups work fine a few times, whether the iMac is put to sleep or not, then the error occurs again.  Any suggestions on how to make this work without error and without constantly unmounting/remounting the disk?  I had previously used a different, smaller LaCie drive via firewire 800 without any problems ever.
    Thanks

    I have been wrestling with the same problem for a few weeks.
    I eventially solved the problem after determining that the problem is not in the Time Machine program.
    It does not seem to exist in Snow Leopard but in Lion and Mountain Lion.
    I have several drives on my system: firewire and USB 3.
    I observed that one or more of my USB 3 drives become read only after some time even when the Time Machine is off. Firewire and USB flash drives are allright.
    I am now running all three USB 3 drives off a Targus USB 3 hub. I got mine from Office Depot.
    The power supply for this hub is rated at 4 amperes. Maybe the USB 3 drives need more power.
    Some other steps I went through may be of interest:
    I updated the firmware on my Wester Digital 1TB drive for the Mac form downloads fron WD sites. I also downloaded the WD Smartware.
    However, I found an article that recommended partitioning the drive as journaled case sensitive.
    Prior to doing this, the Time Machine would sometimes backup as much as 40 GB even when nothing had been added to my computer. Now  backups without activity by me add only a few megabytes.
    I noticed that under system profile beginning with 10.7 that the drive storage is shown by category with the sizes listed. This goes on in background all the time. It is possible he USB 2 ports and hubs may not be able to handle this activity.
    I have had my computer, a late 2007 iMac with 4 GB of ram, checked by Apple.
    This worked for me,

  • Csbackup error creating backup directory

    Hi All,
    We are running Messaging Server: Sun Java(tm) System Messaging Server 6.3-4.01 libimta.so 6.3-4.01 on SunOS 5.10
    When we using ./csbackup -f database backup, it gives the following error.
    Error creating directory backup
    Backup failed
    We tried manually creating backup directory in calendar_base/csdb/ . Verbose mode does not give any more info. Tried without -f option also. Also tried csbackup after stop-cal and start-cal. Still same error
    What should we check to find out the problem . Thanks in advance
    Cheers Suru

    Error creating directory backup
    Backup failedGiven that you are running the command in the <calendar_base>/sbin directory, the above command is actually trying to create the directory <calendar_base>/sbin/backup. As the csbackup command runs as the icsuser this doesn't have sufficient permissions to create the directory and fails.
    Try explicitly specifying the directory path e.g.
    ./csbackup -f database /tmp/backup/

  • Creating backup Job with DBMS_SCHEDULER

    Hello,
    Can someone please help me out here:
    I'm using Oracle10g release 1 on windowsXP
    I'm trying to create a backup job with dbms_scheduler and it's not working.
    This is what I did:
    I created a job as follows:
    BEGIN
    dbms_scheduler.create_job (
    job_name => 'RMAN_FULL',
    job_type => 'EXCUTABLE',
    job_action => 'E:\wkdir\rman_bkp',
    enabled => TRUE,
    start_date => '24-NOV-2007 2:10:00 PM',
    repeat_interval => 'FREQ=WEEKLY',
    comments => 'Full Database Backup');
    END;
    While rman_bkp is an RMAN command but it wasn't working.
    Please where do I get it wrong?
    Kindly put me through the EXECUTABLE or should I use PL/SQL_BLOCK and how?
    Thanks.
    Regards,
    Cherish

    Hi,
    There is a guide to running external jobs using the Scheduler here
    Guide to External Jobs on 10g with dbms_scheduler e.g. scripts,batch files
    You need to use the full path to a real Windows executable and the arguments to it e.g. for a batch script you would have to do something like
    c:\windows\cmd.exe /q /c c:\myscript.bat
    There is a forum dedicated to the Scheduler here

  • Time Machine Failure - Unable to  create backup directory

    I've been using time machine for months with no problems. It seems like since I went to the 10.5.2 update I started having problems.
    Time machine fails and says a problem occurred creating a backup directory. I'm running an external drive formated to the MAC Extended Journeled. I also set my computer share name with no punctuation and no spaces.
    Today I got the failure and I ran repair disc in disk utility and it could not repair the disk. So I erased it, rebooted and reconfigured time machine.
    Started running the backup and about 30 minutes into it stopped with the same error.
    Any thing I can try?

    Seems I have same problem, I came here for the answer, only to find there appears to be none!
    I started off with a new 250Gb internal drive, 50 "Real" Gb to Boot Camp, rest to Mac. Re-installed from original Apple install disks to TIGER, then upgraded to LEOPARD with the Apple upgrade disk that came with the machine as an uninstalled upgrade. All firmware and software updates up to date.
    First tried a Maxtor 4+ ext 750Gb Firewire drive for Time machine, 400Gb to Time Machine, other partition for other stuff. Every backup failed with Time Machine, same as the unfortunate gentleman in the pages above. Super-Duper backup to that same drive/partition worked perfectly.
    So I bought a 250Gb 2.5" Western Digital drive, put it in a USB/Firewire case and tried that, but every time same problem. It would stall once 123.85Gb of 143.8Gb completed, and get no further. After a few days a reboot or forcequit was needed to stop the process, and on attempting to restart time machine later would only get to about 32kb and fail stating there was not enough space on the drive. (123Gb already backed up, only 19Gb to go, and 106Gb free on the backup drive)
    I have re-formatted (Standard Mac extended/journalled format) the drive several times now, and always same result. I have checked the drive, repaired it, and written it over with Zeroes after formatting even, still same resuly, exactly 123.85Gb into the backup it stops and goes no further. I have tried with both the firewire, and the USB plugged into the drive, same result. Time Machine does not even have the courtesy to report which file it got stuck on, so that I could manually delete it if that was the problem. Anyone found the answer to this yet?
