Creating Banded Gradients

Hello,
I'm trying to create a banded gradient within a rectangle. I don't want it to look smooth but rather as a series of stepped swatches almost from green to white, so that the gradient would appear to be made of 30 or so colums in a rectangle transitioning from one color to another.
Any help is appreciated!
Cheers

  • Creating a gradient then setting transparency to lighten doesn't work

Hi folks, i'm trying to create a gradient overlay that is set to 'lighten' in the transparency palette but for some reason it creates a total white result?
To, visually at any rate, get the desired effect the only setting that seems to work is overlay but that's not what i want really.
It seems to work fine with 'multiply' the gradient's dark area multiply the background object.
    Any ideas??
    Thanks

    Really? I got 16 hits. Here's the 2nd:
    To create opacity masks
To create a mask from an existing object, select at least two objects or groups, and choose Make Opacity Mask from the Transparency palette menu. The topmost selected object or group is used as the mask.
To create an empty mask, select a single object or group, or target a layer in the Layers palette. Then double-click directly to the right of the thumbnail in the Transparency palette. If the thumbnail isnt visible, choose Show Thumbnails from the palette menu. An empty mask is created and Illustrator automatically enters mask-editing mode. Use the drawing tools to draw a mask shape. Click the artwork thumbnail (left thumbnail) in the Transparency palette to exit mask-editing mode.
Note: The Clip option sets the mask background to black. Therefore, black objects, such as black type, used to create an opacity mask with the Clip option selected will not be visible. To see the objects, use a different color or deselect the Clip option.

  • Creating a gradient

First off I am very new to Illustrator.  Just learning.  I was wathing a following along with a tutorial for creating a gradient.  The user was creating the gradient inside a rectangle.  WIthin the gradient options on his screen, there was a list of colors that he had included into the gradiant from the swath/pallette.  With these colors was a box that he could input a percent to black for each color.  I am not seeing that on mine.  I am assuming that there is simply a setting I need to open or view.  Any help?

    WellSir,
It sounds as if it may have been the Vindow>Color palette. In its flyot you can choose the colour space (CMYK(/RGB/whatever), and when you click on one of the squares under the Gradient Slider in the Gradient palette, you can see and change the composition of that colour, such as adding black.

  • Creating a Gradient Shape

Some time back I asked how to create a gradient shape in FCPx.  I appreciated the answers, but none of them were clear to me, and I have not yet been able to pull it off.  Wondering if anyone is interested in making a short tutorial showing how to do this?  I am simply after a rectangle that has a linear or radial shape using color point values on the gradient as required, preferably values that can be eye-dropped from elsewhere on the screen.
    Thanks!
    Geoff

Probably the most general way to do this would be to create a generator in Motion, but...
Here is a way you can do that, using only content already available in FCP X.
In this, I will use the "Shape" and "Gradient" generators.
    1) Place the Gradient in the timeline and adjust as desired.
    2) Place the Shape generator ABOVE the gradient. Set the fill to white and turn off the Outline in the generator part of the inspector.
    3) Click the video tab of the inspector and under Compositing set the Blend Mode to "Stencil Luma"
    4) By now you will have the shape filled with the gradient and the rest of the frame black.
    5) Select the shape and the gradient and hit option-G to turn this into a compound clip. This will confine the blend mode set above so that it does not affect any clips that lie below the shape and gradient, maling them visible behind the shape.

  • Help creating this gradient pattern

I'm kinda stumped. Basically I need to create a gradient pattern going from inside (green) to outside (brown) with a small white and yellow step in between. The problem I am having is that I need to follow the pattern of the logo in the middle, but end up with a rectangle on the outside and it needs to be a fluid transition between the colors, kinda like this:
Any advice on how I can get what I am trying to achieve?
    Using C3.

    Userbak,
    Blends like matching Anchor Points.
Presuming the logo pattern has 10 Anchor Points, namely 4 corner ones, 2 top/bottom ones, and 4 at the transition between circular and rectangular parts, you may add 3 matching Anchor Points to each of the horizontal sides of the rectangle, a) one in the middle and b) one on either side; you may move the b) Anchor Points to different (symmetrical) positions, maybe even to coincide with the corner Anchor Points. That may remove the choppiness as much as is possible.
To have one or more colours in between, you may create a stepwise blend with stroke/no fill paths, expand, and create the final blend from that.

  • How to create transparency gradient

    Hi
please share how to create transparency gradient
    have attached the example

    qanibh,
In the newest version(s), you may specify opacity values for the Gradient Fill.
    In older versions,, you may:
    1) Create the shape with the solid end colour upon the seethrough background;
    2) Copy to the front, apply a gradient to the copy, and in the Transparency palette/panel flyout Make Opacity Mask, setting Clip and Invert as wished.

  • How to create a gradient field in CS5 that doesn't striate when printed?

Can someone explain how to create a large gradient field in CS5 that won't striate when printed? I created a poster, 18" x 24" in which the bottom third gradates from olive to black. When it prints there are thick paralell bands which are  undesirable. The tips I found online go back to 2009 which don't apply to CS5. The directions in the CS5 manual are confusing to me. Is there a simple way to do this?

    Is your monitor well calibrated?
Did you print it locally on your own printer before sending it out?
After you've exhausted everything else, you might consider creating a small test file with the offending gradient, and physically carry it to one of the printing locations, and speak to a technician there. Honestly, it sounds like a profile mismatch, but if this has happened at multiple Kinkos locations, then I agree, it would seem the problem is most likely in the file.
Have you looked at individual channels? (R,G,B)
One other idea: you say it's olive to black ... you could try an olive gradient from 100% opacity to 0% opacity, placed over a solid black layer, (or alteratively, a similar black gradient over solid olive) and see if that improves the output. Beware, some printers are really bad at 0%-5% values. If the gradient is going from 100% of one color to 0%, this might be contributing to the problem. Try going from 100% to 5% if this is the case.
One last thing: can you post a portion of the offending area of the image here?

  • How can I create a gradient blur?

I want to create a blur effect that starts from one edge of a photo and gets stronger (more blurred) as it goes away from that point. This specific effect only needs to travel in one direction, so it doesn't need to be circular.
I don't want to use the method of creating a second copy of the photo on a separate layer, blurring it, and using a gradient on a layer mask, because this doesn't achieve the effect I'm looking for, since you can still see some of the non-blurred image under the blurred one.
    Can anyone help?

    >What I don't understand is why the original poster said Ho's method worked great, when the method gives the exact same result as the method he mentioned he didn't want to use?
I'm not sure of the reason, but it didn't produce the same results. Just to clarify, the image I was using had text in it. When I used the method I mentioned in my first post, I saw the blurred image, but right at the point when the opacity was around 50% I could still see the completely unblurred image underneath (completely clear and readable text), creating a sort-of glow look around the text.
When I used the method that Ho suggested, the text simply becomes increasingly blurred as you look across the image.

  • How to create multiple gradients in a compound path?

Hi, I am trying to color a compound path with multiple colors? Kinda similar to the effect here
I tried using the blend tool and replace the spline but it does not give the desired effect.
Any tips as to how to approach this?
I have made the G by creating a compound path.
    Thank you!

    namk,
    You may:
    1) Create a simple stroke/nofill path, with a stroke at least as wide as the semicircular end parts, which follows and fully covers the G shape of the compound path;
    2) Ctrl/Cmd+X+B to bring it to the back, then give it the desired gradient along the stroke/path;
    3) Select all and Object>Clipping Mask>Make.
If you wish to get the stroke back on top, you may:
    4) Click the compund path with the Direct Selection Tool and reapply its stroke with the original weight.

  • Alpha layer on V2 creates banding in the still image of V1

I have about seventy-five shots with a still image background and an animated object above it (on video track 2). The alpha type is set correctly (black), but for some reason the background has color banding on any spot where the V2 alpha layer exists. It's critical that we correct this distortion, so if anyone has any ideas they'd be much appreciated!
The animated layer is a combination of a Photoshop PNG and a shape created in Motion. The animation was all done in Motion as well. Unfortunately, using the still image is a background in Motion to begin with is NOT an option, but to explain why would take another four or five paragraphs (this is a complicated and long-running project!).
    Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the help. I will try rendering it in 10-bit.
About rendering it in Motion. . . well, that actually does not create the banding, but due to what some experts suspect is deep-seated problem with our OS X or Final Cut Studio installation, it does other things with the image which are unacceptable for our output.
Scratch that! Thanks so much! Rendering in high-precision YUV fixed our problem! (With the color banding, I mean.) We've got a nearly seven hour DVD set going out nationwide soon and you just made this one of our briefest and easiest problems to overcome.
I thought I had tried every combination of rendering but with so many variables, I guess that one slipped through.

  • Create a gradient between inner and outer ellipses

    ...or any other enclosed shapes.
    Product: Adobe Photoshop Elements 3.0
    O.S.: Windows XP, SP 3
I've searched the product Help and this forum, but am unable to find a solution to my problem.
I'd like to use Adobe Photoshop Elements 3.0 to create an elliptically-shaped mask for use in Adobe Premiere CS3. The idea is to create two concentric ellipses of equal eccentricity. The area outside the outer ellipse is black; the area inside the inner ellipse is transparent. The area between the two elliptical boundaries is the gradient. This creates a soft-edged cameo effect in Premiere's video.
I'm able to make a circular cameo with the Radial gradient, but have not found a way to make an arbitrarily shaped (in this case, elliptical) one.
    * Is there a way to do this at all?
    * Do I need a more recent version of Photoshop than Elements 3.0?
    Thanks for any help.
    -Larry Byler-

If I understand correctly, you want the mask to be an ellipse that provides a vignette effect (i. e., gradually fading from the edge).
If you have added one of the tool sets (such as Grant Dixon's Tools) that allow you to add masks, you can do this as follows:
-- add a mask to your layer
-- click on the mask icon to select it
-- used the marquee tool to draw an ellipse on the mask
-- hit CTRL-I to invert the mask
-- fill the selection with black
-- open the Gaussian blur filter
    -- check the Preview box
-- select a level of blur that gives you the degree of fade-in you want.
If you do not have mask capability you can achieve the same effect with a clipping group.
-- create a layer below the layer you want to mask and clip it to the other (alt-G, if I remember correctly)
-- click on the lower layer and then follow the steps above (from the 3rd one on)

  • Need to create a 'gradient mask' using a b&w photo image.

I have not created a document yet and would like some thought on how to do this: I want to use a continuous tone black and white image which is somewhat close to what would be a 'knockout' but with soft edges - so it gradates appropriately over the background image I want to use, making the black part of the image used as the mask become much of the effect of a gradient mask: the background image shows through whereever there is the 'black' and 'tone' of the image. I hope this makes sense.
my first thought is to create a layer mask and then paste the black and white image onto that, but I'm not sure if that will work to accept the 'soft tones' of the image and work appropriately.
Has anyone had experience with this type of thing that they can share what steps I should take to make this effect work?
    TIA,
    Ken

Such a mask can also be very useful in an adjustment layer to control color, sharpneess, contrast, luminance, etc.
See/search for PPW, Dan Margulis, Photoshop books on color corrections such as LAB or Photoshop workflow, or Italian site "color duels" or Yahoo group "colortheory".
This is interesting. I'll check these sources and try some of this today. Thanks Doug.

  • How to create a gradient - Video

I was asked on the day I downloaded FCPX how to create a Graduated sky! Well as I had only just got it I had no idea.. so having promptly forgot the users name I thought Id stick the video here if anyone is interested.. probably most of you know how to do it anyway?!!
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xRPHxLlLN3c

Here is what I have figured out.
If you click each color/opacity swatch slider in the gradient box in Motion you can publish the respective color, location, and opacity controls for that transition point in the gradient. This will allow you to change the colors for those points from within FCPX and adjust the location of the transition between zones.
I'm just making up the terminology above.. hopefully it is clear.
It doesn't seem like you add new points to the gradient from within FCPX at this time. If someone figures it out, please share!

  • How to Create Band as a Filter

    Please help

This is what i've done till now:-
I'm Calculating the (Actuals/Budget) % by using following formula
    [Calc in %]=(Sum([Actual Hours]) / Sum([Budgeted Hours])) *100
Where as the Band calculation is getting done based on following formula
    [Band]=If ([Calc in %] < 50) Then "<50%" ElseIf ([Calc in %] >= 50 And [Calc in %] <= 80) Then "50-80%" ElseIf ([Calc in %] >= 81 And [Calc in %] <= 100) Then "81-100%" ElseIf ([Calc in %] > 100) Then ">100%"
Now i want to create one drill filter (Dimension) which will contain following drill option
    <50%
    50-80%
    81-100%
    >100%
After creating this, if i select any value from the drill filter; i should be able to see only those entries which falls under that criteria.
I hope, i have explained my requirement in Proper Manner
I did some RnD and based on that i created one Variable (Dimension) with following formula
    [ Band]=[Band] ForEach([Cr Number])
By doing that im getting the options which i wanted in Drill filter; but as soon as i select any option other than "All Values" its not showing me the data...
You can refer to my attachment

    Hi,
In stead of using the for each, I would create a detail object band, detail of Cr Number.
    =If ([Calc in %] < 50) Then "<50%" ElseIf ([Calc in %] >= 50 And [Calc in %] <= 80) Then "50-80%" ElseIf ([Calc in %] >= 81 And [Calc in %] <= 100) Then "81-100%" ElseIf ([Calc in %] > 100) Then ">100%"
Then use this object as a drop down filter.
    Hope this helps,
    Marianne
BTW, dont use the sum() in the calc% formula...
