Creating clipping mask

Good afternoon y'all!
I'm just concerned with not knowing how to create a clipping mask for my awesome design.
Can somebody please help me out with this issue?!

I would be inclined to do this with an effect.
actually the whole Tick can be done as a single path.
draw tick, set fill to red ,add stroke, add dropshadow (no blur and blend to normal).
in appearance panel add Sponge effect to the fill to get the texture you want.
for clipping path. clipping shape must be on top of your texture image, select both and create clipping path.

  • Automatically create clipping masks

    Hello,
I was watching this amazing video -
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ebVFXphyJqw
    - and I noticed, that flash has a feature, that seems to automatically create clipping masks.
She starts using these at 1:45. She draws blue paths and applies gradients to shapes that use the blue paths but also underlying art.
I haven't figured out a quick way in illustrator to do it like this. (Draw path - divide - livepaint - new fill can produce such results, but thats too complicated for quick shading...)
Also there is a feature right at the beginning, where she erases segments of circular paths. They are exactly cut at the intersection points. Of course there are scissors and snapping in AI, but that method flash seems to offer looks much more convenient.
Maybe those functions are burrowed in some side menus in AI... I mean, I have Flash CS6, but I feel much more comfortable in AI.
If you know these features, especially the auto clipping mask thing, please tell me

Wow, the draw inside mode was also new to me. So much to learn!
It's a pity that it does not create merged clipping groups when having two objects selected simultaneously upon entering drawing inside mode.
I have not figured out, how to use the shapebuilder tool with single paths yet.
But I did try out the Pathfinder's outline operation. It seems to give me the seperated strokes I demanded.
Thanks for your help again Monika.

  • Alt key switching documents instead of Creating Clipping Mask - New Mac Pro 2014 - Please help

I just got a new Mac Pro, and when I use the alt/option key as a shortcut in the layers palette (to create clipping masks and duplicate layers) instead it switches to other documents that I have open.  It's only after this happened that I realized how often I use the option key in my work flow and it's frustrating.
    Please help,
    Thanks,
    Lonno

Just solved it.  It had to do with my secondary monitor, which is where my layers palette was.  I used this link:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5476222?tstart=0
and turned off all the mission control settings I don't use.  Apparently it was switching monitors whenever I used the alt key.

  • Problems creating clipping masks

I have been trying to make some distressed letters I created into a clipping mask to place over a picture. The distressed text is outlined. Everytime I attempt to do this I end up completely hiding the photo I was attempting to make the mask for. I am using illustrator cs5. Does any one know of a good work around for this problem?

Select the outlined type and hit Cmd 8 to create a compound path, then create the clipping mask.
Or just do it with live type objects.

  • How to create Clipping Masks with Shapes and Text?

Hi there! I am new to Illustrator and am currently attempting to learn it. I am creating a logo that has text and has a shape that goes through the text to make the text appear as if it has claw marks in it.
I have two layers. The layer with the shape "claw" marks, and a layer with the text. The shape layer is currently above and the text layer is currently below. If I select both layers and click on Make Clipping Mask it has the text displayed within the little claw marks, how do I reverse that? Because when I try to change the order of the layers it doesn't clip anything?
    Thank you so much!
    Aaron

    Hi Monika,
Sorry for taking so long to reply... This is what I am trying to accomplish. I tried following your directions above, but that only made the text invisible and I tried moving the claw layers above and below the text... and it only appeared as if the claws per se were filling up with the text color.
Here is what I am trying to accomplish:

  • Ive been trying for hours now but illustrator wont allow me to create clipping mask

I have created the attached logo wit the pen tool. I then cut the middle bit out using the shape builder tool.
I imported this onto a new document containing an image/object i want to clip it to . I select both go to object> make clipping mask.
Both objects suddenly go blank and i can see the no fill/ no stroke icons. If this doesnt happen then ai will plain and simply say "cannot make clipping mask".
This has been bothering me for a couple days now.
    Anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks in advance.

You can do it in a quite different/similar way with Cliping masks, without or with the purple/flamelike/smoky coloured background.
Note: There was an error in the first suggestion in post #18: In Step 5) you should select C) (the purple/flamelike/smoky coloured background to cut from) instead of D) (the underlying texture of the dripping black parts), sorry, I just spotted it.
You may (reusing part of the first suggestion):
    1) Go back to, or start anew with, the following basic parts (starting with this stacking order):
    A) The Compound Path forming the inner dripping black part (in the A),
    B) The Compound Path forming the outer dripping black parts,
    C) The purple/flamelike/smoky coloured background to cut from,
    D) The underlying texture of the dripping black parts,
    E) The underlying texture of the inner letter parts;
    2) Select A) and B) and copy them both at the very top of the stacking order, then release both Compound Paths and delete the inner path from A) and the outer path from B), then make them into a new Compound Path consisting of the inner letter shapes (you may use Pathfinder>Minus Front or Object>Compound Path>Make);
    3) Move E) (the underlying texture of the inner letter parts) up just below the new Compound Path from 2), select both, and Object>Clipping Mask>Make, then hide;
    4) Select A) (the Compound Path forming the inner dripping black part (in the A)) and B) (the Compound Path forming the outer dripping black parts) and Object>Compound Path>Make;
    5) Select the combination from 4) and D) (the underlying texture of the dripping black parts) and Object>Clipping Mask>Make;
    6) Show 3).
    C) The purple/flamelike/smoky coloured backgroun, if you keep it, or any other background will will be visible wherever it is not covered.

  • Illustrator files from Bridge creates Clipping mask.

I would like to use Bridge as a library for my Illustrator files. Only when I pressed shift key when dragging a illustrator file into my (illustrator) document, he translate my Artboard into a clipping mask. Does anyone have a solution?
I'm working in Adobe Illustrator CS5. Thnk you.

@ Kurt & Monika, thank you for your help. Indeed, I see more advantages in the use of Bridge mainly because I have my files used in Illustrator and Photoshop.
Action button is an option, same as the "Edit Clipping Path" button at the top of the control bar. Open a file is also an option.
I was just wondering if I overlooked an option for better storage of my files. Thnk for youre time.

  • Adobe Photoshop CC dual screen clipping mask bug?

Hi, it's a little hard to explain the situation, but I'll try my best.
So here's my scenerio, I have 2 monitors. I’m currently working on the file on monitor 2.  Having the layer panel on monitor 1, I'm tryiing to create a clipping mask by holding down the option button on monitor 1's layer panel.
It will jump to the file on monitor 1 and stays on that monitor unless I move the layer panel to monitor 2.  Every other function seems to work fine so far, but this one really bothers me a lot.
    Thanks for your help.

I have problems with the alt/option key as well. I have two monitors and also use the left one as my dominant scree. I'm running Photoshop CC on Mavericks OS. I think this only happens when I have more than one document open in Photoshop.
Whenever I try to alt+click to create clipping masks in the layers panel, or alt+drag to quickly duplicate layers/layer-effects/masks/etc, instead of executing the task, Photoshop jumps focus to another open document, pulling it up on the right (i.e., secondary) monitor. I have to click back to my original document and do manually do everything with right clicks and menus. A relatively small glitch but huge annoyance.

  • CS6 actions batch saving images to a clipping mask issue

    Hey all,
Been at this for quite some while now and searched the www thin for suggestion - so really hope someone can help me out here.
    Objective:
    - Target a folder with xxx .gif patterns (in the same size)
    - Setup actions to batch open each image from the folder, copy the pattern image individually over to a .PSD file that have a silhouette of the sleeve.
    - Apply the individual pattern to the clipping mask
    - Save it out as .png
    Issue:
So far ive only had the automate > batch process to save out one .png with the pattern correctly applied to the silhouette.
What I experince is that, if I close down everything and initiate automate > batch process then Photoshop will complain about not being able to locate the clipping mask.
In my action setup I first open my .psd containing my sleeve shape, then open an actual pattern image and then all other steps ending up with saving the .psd with pattern clipping mask to .png.
Just to give a simple idea about my setup take a look here:
    http://i.imgur.com/FE8mSEU.png
In this one below, ive closed everything and run the automate > batch process, which gives me the error you can see here:
    http://i.imgur.com/7Cvj26D.png
Any suggestions on what I could be doing wrong OR if I am doing anything wrong?

    Hi Mack,
Thanks a lot for your throughout response - really appreciate it!
I do acknowledge that im new to batch in Photoshop and could possibly why this is not working for me - although in not quite sure why and what I would need to make as a programmed script - would you by any chance try to give me an idea on what specific step needs to be programmed?
My actions are very few and quite simple, and seemed to fit in very nicely in how ive understood the actions feature would work - in any case of not being precise enough here's my exact steps.
    1. I open up Photoshop - No documents or anything are open at current point. I click "Record" in actions
    2. I open my sleeve_layer.PSD  file (which opens up in a tab) -> File -> Open -> PSD
    3. I open one of the pattern .gif files (which opens up in a tab) - which are all located in the same folder with the same size -> File -> Open -> .gif
    4. In my pattern tab window (from nr 3) I select all (ctrl-a) -> copy (ctrl-c)
    5. I then click over to my sleeve_layer.PSD window tab and paste (ctrl-v) my copied pattern image into a layer above my sleeve layer.
    6. I then right-click with my mouse on the pattern.gif layer -> click "Create clipping mask" (the pattern is now only shown within the sleeve layer shape)
    7. I save the work done in the .psd to web -> File -> Save for web -> .png
    8. I then close my sleeve_layer.PSD - without saving it (since I dont want to have clipping masks for each pattern stacking up from the batch)
    9. Recording ends
If I now run the batch all actions are done fine until it reaches the action with the clipping mask - where I get "The command "Create clipping mask" is not currently available" - I can see that when this error appears, im not seeing any open sleeve_layer.PSD tab - so not sure if the psd file is actually getting opened (and this might be the error for the reference error of the clipping mask to appear).
If I try to manually RUN the actions set in the actions panel, I notice though that the sleeve_layer.PSD tab is getting opened.
When running automate -> batch -> I point "source" to my folder of all patterns (only .gif files appear in this folder)
"Destination" folder is set to some other folder.

  • Q:Clipping Masks

I have a background image, I made a selection from the background, on to a new layer by pressing Cmd+J.
    I got a texture image
I made a clipping mask and the textured image doesn't go into the image I cut out it covers everything else but the clipping mask.
Help and confused. I'm missing a step Im sure or 2 steps...

Hi there Could you post a screenshot of your layers panel? This would allows us to give you more specialized help.
Make sure the texture layer is above the layer you want to apply a clipping mask to. I've outlined the steps below.
    1. A you described, I've selected the area of my image that I want to apply a texture to, and copied it onto a new layer. In my case, I'm using the blank white wall.
    2. Now you're going to want to add the texture to a new layer above the layer you want to apply the clipping mask to. In my case, since I'm applying the brick texture to the white wall, I've placed the brick layer above my wall layer.
    3. To create a clipping mask, select your texture layer and go to Layer > Create Clipping Mask. Below you can see that the brick texture is now clipped to the wall area that I selected earlier. You can see that a little arrow icon has shown up next to the texture layer thumbnail in my Layers Panel.
If you are still having problems, feel free to post here again. If you could include a screenshot of your workspace and layers panel, that would be great
    Cheers!

  • Why can't clip mask a folder?

I needed to clip several layers to one. So I had to turn'em it into a smart object in order to make this work.
Just wondering why clipping a folder cannot be done.

Can you please be a bit more specific?
It's certainly possible to have two layers "clipped" to one, making it unnecessary to do things a different way, but it occurs to me I'm likely not understanding your specific goals based on your description, possibly because the "clipping mask" terminology is at best a bit confusing.
But per the second part of your message...  Have you tried creating the layer above the group first, then choosing Layer - Create Clipping Mask from the menu?

  • [AI CS4 Mac] How to Create a Layer Clipping Mask?

    Hi Folks,
How does one go about creating a layer clipping mask using the SDK?
What I want to do is to simulate clicking on the "Make/Release Clipping Mask" button (the left-most picture button) that is at the bottom of the Layers Panel.
    Thanks!
    -- Jim

Clipping masks work, but they can be a little clunky (as you might tell from their weird way of being set up). You might find opacity masks more flexible. An opacity mask is basically a group attached to a layer, in which you store paths that represent holes in the mask. These holes have an opacity value for how much shows through. So anything in the mask group is a hole (there can be many) and anything in the layer (as normal) shows through those holes. Setting it up is simpler but it depends on the kind of clipping you're trying to do which is easier. We find it easier when doing knockouts for labels on lines, but clipping paths are also possible, just a little more annoying.

  • Illustrator clipping mask creating white fill?!!!

    Hi all,
So basically i have designed the top of a paper plane and have completed the top design which i now want to clip into the template using the clipping mask tool. I have used it exactly how it is supposed to'
    1. firstly getting my shape that i want to use to clip exactly how i want it
    2. then getting my image which i want to place under my first shape to use the clipping mask with
    3. align it in place and bring my "shape" to the front and image to the back
then using the selection tool i select all objects then click
    objects> clipping mask> make
and for some reason it clips it but the image that i wastring to clip just becomes a white fill...
i have no idea how to fix this and its driving me crazy,, i cant find a soloution no matter how long i try to fix it or research it..
i have included some screenshots below

Hi thanks so much for that! yes i did as you asked and it seems to work if i complete a rectangle clipping mask! but as soon as i copy it over and try it with my original shape, it doesnt work.... i think there is something wrong with what i have created as i showed in my last screen shot, even when i try to create a fill for my shape that i have made and am trying to use for the clipping mask it doesnt fill,, even though t says it is "filled" pink however when i completed the rectangle it had a fill of white so i knew it was ontop and that it would work,,, which isnt really happening with my shape, as it doesnt have a fill even when it says it does

  • Help with creating compound/Clipping Mask

    Hello,
This is going to be quite hard to explain so bear with me!
I recently live traced a hand drawn pattern into illustrator pressing 'Ignore white', Underneath this I have a jpg with a texture I want to use. My aim is to cut out the shape of two letters into this pattern/texture.
My problem is that creating a compound mask on my pattern will not work because live trace has created a group with hundred of paths and compound paths from my live trace, is there anyway create a mask so that the pattern just shows up as the two letters and deletes everything around it?
I want to use this method because although I can cut the letters out of a white square covering everything in the background, the design is for a logo and I would like to export as a PNG with a transparent background.
I know there are often a few was to get a desired effect with illustrator but I just can't get my head around this one!
    Thanks for any help,
    Laltoofan4

Place the outline of the letters on top of the pattern. Select the pattern and the letters and choose Object > Clipping Mask > Make.
