Creating & Combining Multiple Projects Query

My IT team has asked me to determine whether I can create and
merge multiple projects to reduce likelihood of "issues" resulting
from use and loading of very large files. Currently, my project is
at 93 MB. I anticipate that it will roughly triple in size within
the next year to year and a half.
I've never had to do this before and I just need a bit of
reassurance that this can be done, easily, without creating a huge
strudel.
I can across two tech notes indicating different approaches
to this challenge: ID: rb_11942 and rb_1940 (
http://www.adobe.com/go/rb_1940).
There will undoubtedly be a large number of cross project
links and a substantial index (when all projects are combined).
I would appreciate any input you might have to offer before I
launch this effort.

Hmmm - how do I put this diplomatically? Let's try this -
would the IT guys accept your guidance on how to configure their
server farm? Nope. So why do they (off the diplomatic path for just
a wee bit) stick their noses into how you do your job? (ok, back
on).
I can only offer my experience here. I have a knowledge base
compiled in WebHelp, for which the project environment is almost a
GB. My compiled Help for our application is produced from an
environment that contains about 133MB.
Given that I have a fairly fiesty laptop, with 2GB RAM and
oodles of disk space, where both projects reside, I have few issues
with working in "large" projects. Both deliverables compile and /
or publish in about 5 minutes or less.
I guess my point is, if it ain't broke, don't make it more
difficult to work with just because an IT guy says so. Skip the
strudel.
(I love my IT guys, by the way - they don't mess around with
what I do, and listen patiently when I tell them what equipment
they should buy - LOL)

  • How do I efficiently combine multiple projects for a huge documentary edit?

    I'm one of the many editors that has migrated to CS6 from Final Cut Pro 7. After a year of accumulating & organizing footage for a documentary, I'm ready to start cutting.
    In the Final Cut world, I'd simply create a master project, open each project I need sequences from, and drag them into the master one. Premiere is here to rain on my parade...
    My problem is straightforward:
    1- I need access to all my media during the course of the entire edit, and I can't figure out how to combine everything without creating a massive, bloated project that even with my fast setup will move very slow, not to mention all my eggs will be in one basket.
    Issues I'm facing:
    - Dynamic Link Server takes so long to import sequences from my bigger projects to another that I'll never get any work done. One attempt took over 15 minutes today! I called Adobe tech support to see if I could make this happen any faster, but they said I can't do anything to further optimize the system.
    - Copy/Pasting sequences from one project to another is also very time consuming.
    - All my footage is organized into sequences with custom colors on each clip to classify its type. Needless to say it was a lot of work. When I use either method above to move these sequences to another project, the colors are all changed.
    I refuse to believe Premiere is only leaving me with these options, but I'm confused as to what I can do.
    My system:
    Mac Pro 2x2.4 Ghz 6 core intel xeon
    32 GB ram
    Nvidia Quadro 4000 gfx card
    Primary media house on G Speed ES Pro RAID via miniSAS
    There is a shocking lack of literature online regarding the above issues. The only solution I've heard of is using CATDV, software that carries the load of massive media storage to Premiere doesn't have to, but I don't have the time or money to get into this, plus all my media has been painstakingly organized over the past year.
    Little help? Thanks.

    I'm far from an expert. But I do know that people cut major motion pictures on PPro. It must not be impossible, nor more difficult that other platforms. Just sayin'.
    I suspect that the problem here is that you expect PPro to work similarly to FCP. From my reading (not experience) of FCP, this is probably not the case. They are different beasts, with different ways to work. Like most Adobe software, there are usually four or five ways to accomplish a given task, but some are easier than others. What one has to do, when learning Adobe, is to find and learn the easiest path. As you've found, that's easier said than done. I feel your pain -- the Adobe docs only teach you how the products work, not how to use them. A big fail, IMHO.
    PPro doesn't seem to have a concept similar to "master project". That said, PPro seems to be perfectly happy to have as many sequences as you want in any given project, and as many bins (folders) as you want to organize your footage. I think of all my sequences as sub-projects, and work on them like that -- some shared clips, but usually not too many. In addition, these sequences can be nested, which allows a fair amount of flexibility.
    I'm just thinking that maybe all you need to do is figure out how PPro wants you to work, and work that way, rather than trying force PPro to work the way you used to work in FCP. If you'll do that, your frustration level will drop and your productivity level will increase. At least, it has for me. But these programs are huge and complex, and learning them is like a lifetime experience.

  • Create- combine multiple pdf files has stopped working? Adobe Acrobat Pro on Mac

    Hi It's my first time on this forum. I'm a regular user of the create pdf by combining multiple pdfs. It always works no questions asked, but just a few days ago when I'd click on create and select Combine files into a single pdf nothing happens. Usually a pop up would let me identify the files to combine.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks

    Hi Anne,
    If all you need to do is combine the PDFs, and Acrobat continues to give you problems, you can have a go at the free program PDF Split and Merge. You will need Java installed on your computer to run it (Java apps run on all systems -- Mac, Windows and Linux, and mobile systems like Android and iOS). Acrobat hangs for me sometimes when trying to combine multiple PDFs, especially if the individual PDFs are of considerable file size. PDF "Sam" works fine for me when Acrobat won't. It also uses less memory and resources than mighty Acrobat, on my RAM-challenged (Windows) machine. As stated above, PDF Sam is a Java program, so it should work also on Mac. There are also system-specific downloads available on the author's web page.
    Have a look-see at PDF Split and Merge at pdfsam.org/download (Go to "Other Platforms and Versions" to find the Mac-specific version).
    Download Java (if it's not installed!) at java.com (Go to java.com/download/manual.jsp and scroll down for Mac OS X). *Java 7 requires at least Mac OS 10.7.3 to install; check "About This Mac" at Apple menu -> About This Mac... to see your system version.
    Good luck

  • Combining multiple projects into one larger project?

    If I have multiple separate projects and now want to combine them, edits, titles and all into a larger project, is it possible? I expected that it might be possible to drag one project into another and place it intact onto the timeline for the new project. Since every combination of dragging a project around has evidently failed to accomplish what I'm expecting... is there a way to do this?

    in terms of convenience, I would indeed export/share all 6 movies.
    to tape, or as Quicktime/FullQuality…
    both methods create a lossless copy of your final movie(s).
    in step II, import all 6 project into a new iM project, as said above, you don't loose ay quality with that back'n forth copying... only some time ;-)… you can set then chapter markers etc....
    besides, your workflow is as mine on larger projects: not 678 clips into one monstrous project of some dozends Gigabytes, just segments…

  • How do I combine multiple projects into one project

    I have about 35 movie projects made in iMovie 11 that I want to combine into about 8 movie projects.  What's the best way to do this?

    If you want those Media Browser versions they are 'squirreled away' or 'hidden' should I say in the the .rcproject file I think. That project file is in the following location:
    Mac HD > Users > (your home folder) > Movies > iMovie Projects > <CTRL> + click on the project name then choose Show Package Contents. This will reveal the folders in thercproject container. The movies will be in the movies folder.

  • Combining Multiple Projects

    Hi,
    I have recently been editing footage from a road trip and as the end result is going to be quite large I have broken the project down into 3 different files (road trip 1, road trip 2 amd road trip 3). I have done this so I can save them on my external harddrive so they do not slow down my computer.
    Question is now I have completed the three different files I want to combine them all under one project name (Road Trip) so I can burn it onto one DVD. Problem is when I copy and paste the three files into the one final master all of the audio and effects are either left behind or out of place.
    Is there a way to combine these 3 files into one master movie wihtout losing all the audio and effects?
    Thanks

    a) .. wouldn't be 3 movies give 3 nice 'chapters' on final DVD ?
    b) if harddrive space is no issue:
    export from within iM as 'Quicktime'FullQuality'
    import 3 resulting files into a new project..
    that shouldn't result in any quality loss, due to usage of same codec... (the 'export' is mainly just a 'copy to' ...)

  • Combining multiple projects into one?

    from a recent vacation i have imovie projects for each city, 6 in all, each being between 2:45 and 5 minutes long. i did each in its own project to keep clips organized better, but when the final project plays, i want the cities to run one after the other, without kicking out to the menu everytime. basically what im asking is is there a way to merge these seperate projects into one, or do i have to compress each and then make a totally new imovie from that?

  • What is the best way to combine multiple projects into one?

    My guess would be to turn them into compound clips and then make the transfer that way, but is that the only way?

    You can merge Events from the file menu.
    Select the Events,  File > Merge Events
    You could also convert project timlines into CC timlines which would be saved in an Event.
    Open project timeline, select all, copy and then paste into a CC timeline.

    Hi,
    well that problem is a long time back -. I only have in mind that the date I had to transfer to the quesry was in a "strange" format. Have a lock into the documentation for the date field - your date field is not recognised as a date field from the quesry engine and so this fails - but unfortunately I have no idea at the moment how I fixed it last time - how I converted my date field......
    Sorry, thast I can not give you the real point - but I will have a lock into the old code - hopefully I find it soon.
    Regards,
    Oliver

  • Combine multiple web services with the same SQL query into one

    Hello,
    I would like to ask a question regarding combine multiple similar web services into one. Can you please tell me if it is possible to combine 4-5 web services into one since they built on the same SQL query with 5 different criterias or condition so that the user can enter any of the 5 criterias to populate the data on the form instead of having 5 different web services?
    e.g Query: Select appName, permit#, address, phone, description, type, section, from table where appName = can be 'appName, permit#, address, phone, or description' to populate the rest of the data to the form.
    Does any one have ever done some thing like this in Workbench ES? If so please assist. I know it can be easier to build it in Visual Basic, C#, or dot.net but the requirement is to build it in workbench ES.
    Thanks in advance,
    Han Dao

    If you are querying for Name, PhoneNumber, and SSN, and you queried for all people with a phone number that started with 867, you would have a potentially long list of people.  So to keep track of all of the people, we store each record in XML complex elements.  The root node is just any name you want, and the repeating element is the complex element name.
    So using the example from above, I'm going to specify the following:
         Root Node: Result
         Repeating Element: Person
    So now when I do a query, my resultXML will look like:
    <Result>
          <Person>
                 <Name>Alex</Name>
                 <PhoneNumber>867-5309</PhoneNumber>
                 <SSN>111-11-1111</SSN>
          </Person>
    </Result>
    If your query returned multiple results (like ours would probably), it would look like:
    <Result>
          <Person>
                 <Name>Alex</Name>
                 <PhoneNumber>867-5309</PhoneNumber>
                 <SSN>111-11-1111</SSN>
          </Person>
          <Person>
                 <Name>Han</Name>
                 <PhoneNumber>867-2169</PhoneNumber>
                 <SSN>222-22-2222</SSN>
          </Person>
    </Result>
    So Result and Person is just to give a little bit of structure to the xml result (containers really).  So you can name them whatever is helpful for you.
    The column name mappings map the query columns (Name, PhoneNumber, SSN) to some node in the XML (Name, PhoneNumber, SSN).  So you don't need to specify which field maps to what in the form.  Just copy the column names to the element name so you have a 1-to-1 naming.  If you want to manipulate the XML a bit though, you could do:
    Column Name               Element
    Name                            YourName
    PhoneNumber                Phone
    SSN                              Secret
    which would then make your xml look like:
    <Result>
          <Person>
                 <YourName>Alex</YourName>
                 <Phone>867-5309</Phone>
                 <Secret>111-11-1111</Secret>
          </Person>
    </Result>
    It lets you change the XML element names to whatever you want. Otherwise by default they take on their column names.
    In your form, you could bind to the WSDL through the Data Connections pane and point it to your web service.  This will then create form elements that you can just drag and drop allowing you to have the information available when the service gets ran.  Once the service is called, you can modify the field's data to get whatever information you need in order to populate other form fields.
    If that is too confusing, feel free to send me your form (e-mail is on profile page) and I'll add comments to it to show you how to set up the form for the web service call (and also give me the link to your webservice)

  • Create multiple project files or one?

    I am working on a feature length film which has 48 sequences with subclips and rough cuts created in Prelude. Now I want to start bringing this footage into Premiere for editing, but I am wondering is there benefits or drawbacks to creating a Premiere project for each sequence then merging them all together in one master project file after finished working on each sequence?
    I'm trying to determine which way would be the easiest to keep things organized and not so overwhelming. Has anyone done this before?

    I never worked on a long project...but for a short test of cs3 , using dailies as source material, I came up with a process that worked pretty good for me.. and it might help you a little bit...dont know.
    it's kinda complicated.
    this example is one part of a scene...well, 2 scenes really, but I didn't have the dailies for all the material shot... so it's hard to explain... mostly I had all of the first part of the stuff you see here and then only part of the rooftop stuff...
    The rooftop stuff I made b&w with a overlay to pretend it was a cheap video cop camera..and used static to make cuts cause I saw crew, other cameras, etc... and had to cut.
    was basically 3 alexa on process trailer and 4 alexa on roof.
    This is what I did for scenes ( basically for the beginning of working on the overall material and then whittling it down to usable stuff )
    I dont use source monitor at all.. in out points.. I put everything in the primary timeline levels..and just cut out the slates and dumb stuff nobody would ever use...cut / delete .
    Then I start scrubbing through and pick out what I think will tell the story and move it UP from the original levels. That gives me a quick easy way to see what was " used" as opposed to what the original stuff ( bulk ) is.
    I don't rename the files or bins as I do that... I create a 'new' sequence and move all the raised stuff into THAT sequence ...and butt it together ...which is now becoming a rough cut...the new sequence ( not what you see here above which is the first bulk of what I got to work with ).  But I dont do that new sequence on a single vid layer cause I do my own fades and stuff on multiple layers and want that option... so I butt them together on several vid levels ( like 3 or whatever in this case )....
    I want the option of overlaying stuff and doing my own cross dissolves at my own 'pace' if need be....not the auto stuff and then the playing with corrections and extra frames etc ...
    As I scrub through the 1st roughcut I notice " Oh, I just cut from one person talking to another person talking, but the background was moving in one take, and not in the next "... which looks stupid.. so I have to go BACK to the original stuff and find a portion of a camera angle and take ...that gives me a moving background ....
    This starts to get really retarded...cause now you're making cuts you don't really WANT to make, but HAVE to make....
    Since I was using dailies and you're using prelude I guess there's a big difference. But I might use a part of one take and part of another take of the same scene and the same "coverage" if with multiple cameras ... so I don't think I would like splitting stuff up onto takes that are good or bad ...unless obviously the whole thing is bad from the get go... like someone fell down or their wig flew off their head or something...

  • Combining Multiple Files within Adobe 8 Professional to create one PDF

    The software does not allow me to combine multiple file types to create one PDF. The error I get is Missing PDFMaker files. Do you want to run the installer in repair mode. It appears to go through the motion, but the end result is the same error message. I have noticed a number of people are also having this issue on the internet and on the Adobe forums. Did anyone find a fix for this? I have searched for days and have not found a fix for this.
    Thanks,

    If I go to file print the word document to PDF, it works fine. I also noticed when tried to do a right click on the files to convert to PDF, I get the Missing PDFMaker file message.

  • How to share or combine logging from multiple projects?

    I'm working on a documentary project now with over 300 hours of footage. It was shot to AVCHD media on SD cards and were copied over to a hard drive. Three different people have been logging the media in the Log and Transfer window. We each have our own project file that we're logging into since we are all using our own iMacs to do the work. Since storage space is an issue, we can't just pull down all the footage into ProRes. Ideally we'll just take our selects directly out of log and transfer. Once it comes time to edit, is it possible to combine the logging information into one project, or does the logging metadata only exist in the project it was created in?
    I've tried several ways to combine the project files (XML, Batch list exports), but none seem to transfer the logged info from Log and Transfer (all the XML and Batch lists do is import the footage that has already been transcoded to ProRes.
    thanks!

    Toastmilk wrote:
    the perfect solution would be if FCP treated clips logged in Log and Transfer the same as it treats them in Log and Capture... creating an offline version that can be batch captured later.
    How about something close to perfect?
    (You may to far along in your workflow for this, but...)
    Transfer your clips to OfflineRT settings using just a card number and clip number (so, the fifth clip from first card that you shot would be named "001 005" - the naming needs to be very straightforward and easy to reproduce). This will get your clips into the project file where you can add markers and log notes as well as copy and paste between project files. And, the files will take up a modest amount of disk space (less than 2GB per hour).
    Assemble your rough cuts.
    When you're ready to work at ApplePro Res, use Media Manager to create an offline edit a your ProRes settings (be sure not to trim unused media - the clips must match in name and duration), retransfer your clips at Apple ProRes using the exact same naming convention (it can even be in a different project or on a different machine), reconnect to the offline project, and then finish your edit.
    This is much more hands on than one might want, but it'll work.

  • How do I create a NetBeans project with multiple JavaFX (FXML) dialogs?

    I'm very new to Java and JavaFX, so forgive what is probably a question asked a thousand times, but I can't seem to find the answer.
    I come from a Visual Studio (C# with WPF) background. I'm used to creating a Solution then adding a Project for each dialog/window that gets included in the Solution. Each dialog/window is a class derived from Window, and I simply create an instance of that class when I need to use the dialog.
    What I need to do is have a main window (stage) that contains two lists of participants (a red team and a blue team).
    Then I need a separate dialog for entering the information for the participant. So when a button on the main stage is pressed ("Add Red Participant"), I want to open the ParticipantDialog. When the "OK" or "Close" button on the Participant dialog is clicked, I want the dialog to be able to return a participant object to the main stage.
    Then the main stage adds that participant to the appropriate list.
    What I've gathered so far is that I will be creating an FXML file for the Participant dialog (and I assume an associated controller). Then when the "Add" button is pressed, I will call an FXMLLoader to load that FXML dialog. Something like this:
    FXMLLoader fxmlLoader = new FXMLLoader(getClass().getResource("ParticipantDialog.fxml"));
    Scene scene = (Scene)fxmlLoader.load();
    final Stage participantDialog = new Stage();
    participantDialog.setScene(scene);
    First question is: is that correct so far? Am I at least on the right track?
    Next question is: how or where do I create the FXML and controller files for the participant dialog using NetBeans? Should I create a separate project to make the participant dialog and then copy those files over, or is there a way to make the files within the parent project? And if I make the participant dialog in a separate project, what's the easiest way to access it from my main stage?
    I feel like I'm missing something simple here because this seems a lot harder than it should be.
    Thanks in advance for any advice.

    >  is that correct so far?
    Yes the sample code you have is fine to launch a new dialog when your Add button is pressed .
    > I create the FXML and controller files for the participant dialog using NetBeans?
    You can edit FXML text in NetBeans, but I think that is kind of tedious.
    You might want to create the FXML using SceneBuilder.
    You can use SceneBuilder in NetBeans.
    You may want to get it working without FXML first.
    For example, use the JavaFX scene graph API, then convert your program to use FXML once you are more comfortable with the JavaFX system.
    The piecemeal approach cuts down on the amount of learning you need to do at one time.
    > Should I create a separate project to make the participant dialog and then copy those files over.
    No.
    Just use a single NetBeans project.
    You will have separate FXML files for your main stage and your participant dialog, but they will both be placed in the same NetBeans project.
    > is there a way to make the files within the parent project?
    In NetBeans 7.3.1, do the following:
      File | New Project | JavaFX | JavaFX FXML Application
    This will create a sample project with a sample fxml file.
    Modify the sample project files to get what you want, changing the sample fxml to your main stage fxml and adding a new participant fxml to the same directory.
