Creating DMGs mountable over AFP

Hi there,
I`m wondering how to create a DMG file, that is mountable via AFP over the Internet.
Here is the situation.
We have our own server with network drives shared over FTP / AFP.
From multiple locations we access the server (Mac OS X Leopard Server) to get data from it via AFP (mount drives in Finder).
One of the drives stores our software.
And when there`s a software that is not freeware, we got used to make a DMG file from the App (or installer) + text file with serial number and sometimes other stuff like manual in PDF.
When I take for instance Toast 9 from Roxio and put their DMG on the server, I can mount it without copying the whole 230 MB file to my computer. Only via internet. And it gets mounted within seconds. Even on my 4 Mbit/s internet connection.
But when I create compressed DMG file without encryption in Disk Utility (I use the option to create new disk image from folder) and put such a DMG on the network drive, it takes really long to mount it. It seems to me like with such a DMG the Finder needs to cache it somehow, i.e. Finder needs to copy the file first to my computer and then mount it.
It can be seen also through Activity Monitor and the Network Traffic tab, that system is transferring some data with full speed of my internet connection.
Can somebody give me an advice, how to create a DMG file, that can be mounted via internet, without the need of being first cached locally?

File copy over AFP / SMB very slow on Mavericks

Hi guys.
I have a retina macbook pro (early 2013) and a mac mini (late 2012).
Both are running 10.9.1. The mac mini has OS X server installed and 2 USB 3.0 harddisks attached to it in RAID0.
I have a Thunderbolt display hooked up to my MBP. I have a 1gbit wired network between the two machines.
Now comes the problem: file copy from the USB 3.0 RAID array to the macbook pro over AFP or SMB is slow, I only get around 8 MB/sec.
First I thought it was a wiring issue (I created my own ethernet cables). However, I tried copying the file via SCP (i.e. SSH) and then I get 50 MB/sec. Still not close to the maximum for gigabit, but at least a lot higher than 8 MB/sec.
I tried googling if anybody else has the same issue, but couldn't really find definitive answers.
I have tried everything with both jumbo frames of and on. Both give the same results.
What's even stranger is if I connect my MBP over 5 GHz to my airport instead of wired, I get 20 MB/sec over AFP....
As far as I know the problem did not arise in the pre-Mavericks time.
Does anybody have any suggestions or solutions? 8 MB/sec is not really that nice

Have you checked your ethernet speed/duplex settings on the ethernet port and XP machine?

Creating Proxy service over a secured BPEL process

Hi,
I have a BPEL process project A which I have secured using oracle/wss_username_token_service_policy
Now, I want to expose it over OSB as a proxy service.
After registering the WSDL, I tried to create Business Service over it.
It gave me a warning:
[OSB Kernel:398133]WSSP 1.2 policy assertions (Web Services Security Policy 1.2) are not allowed on this service.
What is the best approach to take.

Get the wsdl of the OSB proxy service and create webservice parnerlink in BPEL based on this wsdl to invoke the service
To form the wsdl url, copy the Endpoint URI configured to the proxy service(just click on the proxy service in the console) from the sbconsole - /ATHGPUM_GlidePathService/ProxyService/ATHGPUM_GlidePathProxyService
Pre append <<protocol://OSB Hostname:OSB Port>> - http://localhost:8000/ and post append with ?WSDL
The final WSDL url look like - http://localhost:8000/ATHGPUM_GlidePathService/ProxyService/ATHGPUM_GlidePathProxyService?WSDL

Is there any way to create a hover over when you move your mouse over a shape with text in?
the closest solution I have found is to create an animation, which feels a little clumsy

Keynote does have a cursor hover. You would need to use an application that provides this feature.

Creating anchor links over a PSD header

I have created my header in Photoshop and pasted it in to my one-page site as a graphic. In order to create anchors I've created text boxes over each word - no fill and no stroke - and lableled each one to the corresponding anchor. In Preview only the first link works? Is there a better way to do this?

Yes. You can either used Named Destinations, or page views.
Named Destinations need to be set up before the link is created, but can be
used by more than one link. Page views are created ad-hoc when you select
the action "Go to page view".

Unusually access over AFP since 10.4.6

Hello,
since we upgraded our clients and our XServe to OS 10.4.6, there is unusually much more access to the shared folder of the XServe. I checked it with fs_usage on the clients and on the server. On the clients you can see, if the shared folder is connected, the Finder is doing much access to this folder (but all applications are closed) and this never stops.
On the server it looks like a permanent scan of the folders over AFP.
The shared folder on the server is an XSAN-Volume and now the performance of AFP goes completely down
Has someone an idea, what the Finder of the clients is doing now and how I can stop this?

Nice, a .DS_Store file was the reason! I have deleted all .DS_Store files on the shared Volume and now it works fine!
Now, I will disable the .DS_Store files on Networkvolumes. Therefor I found this:

Create a Total over Year Dimension

Does anybody have an idea on how to create a total over the Year dimension in Hyperion Planning (11.1.2 - Still using the Classic App since EPMA components seem tio not working properly on windows server 2008 R2 x64.)
or has an idea which of the following would be a valid approch since I cannot define aggregation to the Year Node in Planning. No addition seems to be possible possible. Background is to get the total over 5 up to 15 years for a long term capital expenditure strategy.
The following ideas came to mind:
1.) FY09 + FY10+ FY11 as a dynamic calc on the last year in the system (as a formula)
2.) Create a calculation rule that aggregates Year (but i cannot seem to be able to change the years to addition
I would appreciate your input or any additional ideas.

Hi,
Yes, you can't create aggregation levels in Year dimension. But you have period dimension in which you can create dynamically calculated base time periods which you can use combined with No Year.
So create a member in Period Dimension called Total of 3 Years. Place a member formula in it (IF(@ISMBR("No Year") FY09+FY10+FY11; ENDIF).
You can use this period combined with No Year.

Mount encrypted DMG and share as a shared filesystem over afp

I am trying to share the hfs+ filesystem that resides on an encrypted .dmg file. When trying to share the filesystem the only one that can mount this system is the person that mounted it on the localsytem. Is there a limitation on mounting .dmg and sharing the filesystem or is there a trick that i don't know. The end result should be a work group with an encrypted share.

Try creating a disk image on your Desktop. If you have the same problem with it, do as follows.
Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, or by corruption of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain iMacs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

Creating encrypted shares for mac users over AFP

Hi,
We are planning to save our sensible company data on an internal NAS hard drive (Diskstation).
For security, we want to have an encrypted share which can be accessed by several people simultaneously (only from Macs with Mac OS 10.6).
My first thought was to create an encrypted DMG, put it in a shared folder on the NAS and let authorized people mount it. This works fine if only one person at a time wants access. But every consecutive worker cannot open the DMG anymore.
Is there a mean to create such a setup with on-board tools of Mac OS - or with additional software as well?

10.7: mounting .sparsebundle over AFP

Hello World,
I seem to be having difficulties mounting any sort of .sparsebundle image files through an AFP network connection on my MBP OS X 10.7.3. I have tried mounting a .sparsebundle image file as an admin user and as the sudo user without any luck.
When I run the command below, the image disk, '/Volumes/TestImageVol', seems to mount and shows up on the desktop BUT less then a second later unmounts/disappears. No warning, no nothing!

I can mount other image files (.DMG) just fine from the exact same location as the .sparsebundle files using the terminal command, hdiutil. I can also copy the .sparsebundle files from the AFP network drive to my MBP's local HDD and then mount them using the hdiutil command.
The AFP network is running off an older PowerMac G4 OS X 10.4.11 which has a 2TB external HDD connected to it called, "TestExtHDD". The external HDD is holding all the disk images that I am hopping to mount over an AFP network in the near future.
Here are the deets about the .sparsebundle file:
- Create on Mac OS X 10.7.3 using Disk Utility v12.1
- Filename: TestImage.sparsebundle
- Volume Name: TestImageVol
- Vol Size: 40MB
- Format: Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
- Encryption: none
- Partiions: Single Partition - GUID Partition Map
- Image Format: Sparse Bundle Disk Image
World, any thoughts on why this is happening for only .sparsebundle files?
PS. Yes I do connect to the AFP network share ("afp://user:pass@domainname/TestExtHDD" --> "/Volumes/TestExtHDD") before I try mounting any image files and yes I have plenty of space on both my AFP server and my MBP HDDs.

AFP (Apple Filing Protocol ) is ideal – it's provided by netatalk, and can be used by things such as Time Machine.

Disk Utillity 10.4.6 errors creating .DMG

I had a client over yesterday, we reformatted his system, installed Tiger 10.4 updated to 10.4.6 installed all of his applications, configured all of his settings, and I've told him now that it's clean, and configured, with permissions repaired, to make an image of his drive, as i do, every few months, (I've imaged my system drive likely 100 times by now)
He's called me, and I'm phone tech' ing him through this process, he's unable to image his system drive.
He has several drives mounted...
- A FW Lacie 160gb Empty - zero'd formatted OS Extended Journaled -NAMED "FW Bakup"
- A Local HD 120gb Empty - zero'd formatted OS Extended Journaled -NAMED "WORK HD"
His Full System drive (labeled SYSTEM HD) is 27gb used

- Selecting the SYSTEM HD volume (not the whole Maxtor Drive - which is only 80gb anyway)
- Hitting "New Image"
- Naming it "Clean-Tiger"
- Placing it on "WORK HD" OR "FW Bakup"
Disk utility runs very slow, stalls about half way through, asks for Admin Password again, and yields the following error....
"Unable to create Clean-Tiger.dmg. No Space Left On Device"
Although both destinations are not only blank, with over 100gb available... the System image should only be 27gb.
I've imaged (As I said above) my System, and other system drives, from my powerbook, G4's, G5's easilly a hundred times - and not had this error before.
there was a 10.3.x panther version that had some disk utility problems for a while that were fixed, and addressed with the following update, that caused (If I remember correctly) a -1 error
Anyone else having any problems ? have any work arounds ?
I've tried this with him, booted off the Tiger install disk, an external FW OS X Tiger installation, and tried 3 different 100gb+ destinations.
Very frustrating.
His machine is a Quicksilver 933 - OS X 10.4.6 -
Again, he's not booted off the system drive that he's trying to image, and the destination disks have a massive amount of room.
All permissions are in tact
Any thoughts ??

I'm not at my G5 right now and my memory is a little hazy, but I think the menu procedure was Images > New > From Folder. Then select the top level of the disk you want to image as the 'folder'. I believe the top level was the name of the HD you want to image. Will look at my G5 when I get home tonight to confirm.

Help creating .dmg - Fails

I was backing up a users hard drive by using Disk Utility and saving the image to my backup server over the network. This usually works fine but now and then I get an error that says " Unable to create disk1s10.dmg Input/output error.
I have run the disk repair- no problem found. I ran repair permissions - still get error. I used Techtool Pro and ran all the repairs I could, still, I get that stinking error message and it fails to image the drive. What is the problem?

If your profile is correct, you might try updating from 10.4.8 to 10.4.11. If you do, make sure and Repair Disk Permissions when it's finished.

Events created on iphone over a week into the future do not sync with mac

Hello,
I have the following problem: whenever I create an event on iCal on the iPhone (2.2.1 3G), this newly created event sync backs fine to iCal on my mac (macbook running 10.5.6), as long as it occurs within 7 days into the future. Any events that lie more than 7 days into the future will not sync back from my iphone to the mac.
Example: today is 3/3. Any events create on the phone for 3/3, 3/4 ... 3/9 WILL sync back to ical on my mac. Events for 3/12 do NOT sync. Events for 3/10 8am did sync, but 11pm did not. Forget about your dental appt 6 months from now. As if there is some arbitrary "7 day in the future" cutoff.
I called phone support, thinking there may be a hidden setting or so that I overlooked, and that was utterly useless. The Apple rep suggested to look in the app store for an application that might fix this. "Besides", he said, "nobody creates events more than 7 days in the future". ***?
Looks like a bug to me, but maybe I overlooked something.
Can anybody confirm this behavior?
Is there any setting that I can try?
Any procedure that I should try?

Before i began syncing calendar events over the air with my MobileMe/former .Mac account, I synced contact info direct with iCal on my Mac via the iTunes sync process. I had no problem syncing events created more than 7 days in the future with the direct sync with iCal on my Mac, and I don't have this problem syncing calendar events over the air with my MM account.
I believe there is a setting under the Info tab for your iPhone sync preferences for syncing calendar events. I no longer have this available for my iPhone sync preferences since I'm syncing calendar events over the air with my MM account. I know the setting includes an option for syncing events in the past, but I don't recall if it included an option for syncing events in the future. There should be a setting for syncing all events. Is this selected?
There is also a setting on the iPhone for syncing all events, or events 2 weeks back, or 3 months back, but nothing for limiting syncing events in the future such as limiting this within the next 7 days.

Error message when trying to create DMG with Disk Utility

Have a highly confidential folder on my drive, so am driving to convert to a DMG file, with password protection. It gets nearly done with the DMG process then generates Error - 49168.
Anyone know what means?
1.I choose read-write as my access options
2.Under encryption I choose the AES setting. It asks me to create a password and I create one (unchecking the "remember password option, of course")
3. It seems to get through 95% of the process, then produces that error message.

A little Googling suggests that Norton Anti-Virus can cause this problem by trying to scan the image as it's being created. The fix seems to be to turn off NAV while creating the image.
If that doesn't work, I'd suggest rebooting from the system disk and having Disk Utility repair the disk, to make sure all is in good working order.

Garageband: How can I listen to a loop I created while recording over it with the same external instrument?

I basically just want to create a new loop using a live instrument. Then record over it while listening so I can lay several complimentary tracks over my own playing,
I own a Steinberg CL1 USB audio interface and a decent condenser microphone.
