Creating error bars on numbers 09

I'm new to Numbers and I'm trying to draw error bars on my scatter graph.
To draw the graph, I clicked on the chart button, chose scatter graph and just altered the info in a table that popped up to make my chart.
To draw error bars, I went to the chart inspector and clicked on the series tab. I know I need to click on the Advanced button but I can't click it and the data section is empty. I can't click on that either and I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong.

To select a series, first click on the chart then click on a bar/line/data point of the series for which you want the error bars. Actually, turns out you don't have to select the data series anyway. Sorry for the misinformation.
I do not know why you can't select error bars. I'll have to play around some and see if I can get it into that state.

  • Error bars in Numbers for iPad?

    Greetings,
One of the reasons I purchased an iPad was to work on the go. For me this means being able to create/edit docs, spreadsheets, and presentations in my iPad and then sync that work with my MBP at work.
I am finding some roadblocks when sharing work between devices (a first for me with Apple).
This specific question has to do with Numbers for the iPad:
    - Is there a way to add error bars within Numbers for the iPad?
When I try to import a spreadsheet from Numbers in my computer the error bars get cropped as if they were some unnecessarily fancy font that didn't make it to the iPad version of the software. If there is no way to do this, does anyone know if there are plans to add this capability to the program?
I might be biased, but I have a hard time coming up with occasions when one would not need to add a measure of variability (error bar) to any graphic dispplay of data (save for ninth grade presentations maybe).
    Thank you for your assistance!
    Andres

    Hi Andres,
iWork for iOS applications are in version 1, and in general provide a subset of the features of the Mac OS versions. Few of the users in this (Numbers) community are familiar with the iPad version, which probably explains the lack of response to yur question in the nine hours since you posted.
I expect you'll get a quicker (and more useful) response if you repost in the iWork for iOS area: https://discussions.apple.com/community/app_store/iwork_for_ios?view=discussions

  • Numbers 09 error bar size

I'm new to numbers and am trying to customise error bars on my graphs.
Is it possible to create error bars of different sizes within a graph? I am using the "standard error" setting but all of the error bars are the same size regardless of sample size.
Can I select each stack in the graph and create an error bar based on its standard error?
    Thanks in advance

For custom error bars, you can choose "custom" and select the error data from your table.

  • Error Bars Stopped Working

I'm having trouble with custom error bars in Numbers 09. I created one scatter plot and successfully added positive and negative error bars with defined values. When I created a second scatter plot with different information, the error bars with custom values selection was grayed out. I closed and reopened the file, closed down the program, ran repair permissions through Disk Utility, and rebooted the machine. For some reason, I've suddenly lost custom error bar functionality. To make sure the issue wasn't associated with my data values, I ran the same data through Excel and was able to generate the graphs with custom error bars.
(When I say custom error bars, I'm referring to defining custom values from standard deviations)
Any body have any clues. A Google search and Discussion search hasn't yielded any results.
    Thanks.

Ok, not too sure what I did to fix the problem, but the issue is now fixed. For those of you who may be experiencing the same issue, here is what I did to correct the problem. Following everything I did in my first post, I trashed the Preference plist ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iWork.Numbers.plist. I reopened the file and clicked on the line in the chart representing my data (don't just click the chart, you have to click on the line itself). Voila!!! I have now restored functionality.

  • Error bars in Charts?

Hello everyone- Would anyone know how to create error bars in charts in Keynote 3? I can't seem to find an answer anywhere to this question. Many thanks to future replies...
    Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

You can't get Keynote charts to generate error bars, or to use error bar information from some other source -- that functionality just isn't available in natively-produced Keynote charts.
However, charts that are copied from Excel and pasted into Keynote look quite good. You won't get all the cool textures, or 3D effects that you can with Keynote charts (and not having the latter is a good thing in my book). But, if you set the background of the chart to "None" from within Excel, the chart background will be transparent in Keynote, and you can do things like apply shadows that will conform to the chart elements. Any formatting that you do in Excel should be respected by Keynote.

  • Error Bars - Can Error Bars be added to Crystal Report Charts

I am trying to add or create "error bars" in my cystral report chart (graph).  I can add "error bars" in an Excel sheet chart (graph) but I cannot find the functionality in crystal reports.
Is it possible to "error bars" to a crystal report chart.  If so, how?

    Hi,
I don't see that this functionality or this kind of chart exists in CR.
I would suggest that you log an Enhancement Request at http://ideas.sap.com and let our developers look into this.

  • Error bars in graphs?

I'm trying to create a scientific presentation in Keynote. It ain't Powerpoint. And even Powerpoint is pretty bad for science. But I want nice-looking graphs, so I'm trying.
One essential feature in graphing software is a way to create error bars (apart from drawing them oneself). I can't find any info on this. Does anyone have some tips or tricks? Many thanks / Matt

    Matt,
unfortunately, Keynote doesn't offer error bars (see also http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2390999&#2390999).
You might also check Grapher.app in theUtilities folder.
And then there's GnuPlot, which offers xerrorbars and yerrorbars. Check http://www.columbia.edu/~sl2403/gnuplot/intro/style-e.html and http://lee-phillips.org/info/Macintosh/gnuplot.html
If this information is useful to you, please mark it as "helpful" or "solved" using the little buttons in the titlebar of this message. Thank you.

  • Creating floating bar charts in Numbers '09

I have what seems a fairly simple requirement, but can't quite work out how to do it in Numbers...
I have a set of price ranges (quotes) and I want to put them on a graph, so I can see at a glance how they they tend to fall.
Ideally, I'd like the X axis to be price and the Y axis to be basically nothing - each quote gets its own line.
So I'm after a stack of horizontal bars indicating the from - to price range.
It doesn't seem that this should be too onerous, but I simply can't spot an appropriate graph type.
    Anyone?

I am trying to picture what you mean but I can't seem to. But I'll give it a shot.
EDIT: I wrote all this then re-read your post and this isn't what you were asking for. Oops.
All charts (graphs) need X's and Y's, though the Y's could be all be the same constant value. So the data you need to plot is a column of quotes (X data) with a column of 1's or checkboxes (Y data) next to it. I am guessing that you want your quotes to be spread across the X axis, not spaced evenly like they are in the bar charts. Otherwise you probably wouldn't be asking. You have two choices on how to do this.
    First way:
If you can create a list of evenly spaced quotes in the header column (A) with a column (B) of checkboxes next to it, you can use a bar chart. You would put a check next to any quote you want to appear on the chart. So you might have a column with quotes of $1, $2, $3, etc with checkboxes next to each which you can check/uncheck. This probably isn't practical in this case but I don't know your data so I'm throwing it out there.
    Second way:
Have a non-header column (B) of quotes and a corresponding column of 1's. Create a scatter chart. This will give you data points, not bars. In the Chart Inspector, Series tab, click on Advanced and add error bars to the Y axis. Make them negative only and 100%. Set the data point symbol to None. Then go to the Graphic Inspector and change the error bars so the line type is a straight line, the width is greater, and the color is what you want. This still isn't a bar chart but it is more like one.
There are variations on the second method. You can remove the Y axis gridlines and value labels so you have a single horizontal line (the X axis). You can plot 0's instead of 1's and make positive, fixed value error bars.

  • Create a Simple Bar Chart - Numbers

I would like to create a bar chart in numbers that totals line items by month and displays a bar chart by month.  Column A has dates associated with the other columns of the spreadsheet running horizontal.  Does the charts functionality have a tool that would count by month, or is there a formula that can be used, or would applescript be needed to run the count?
hope this makes sense.  Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the response.  So the simplest view of the chart is below.  I would like to have a bar chart that would just total line events by month.  From the below example, august would have 2 and september would have 1.

  • How to create X-Bar R graphs in numbers

I cannot for the life of me figure out how to create X-Bar R graphs in numbers. It is beyond frustrating. Can anyone provide any insight? Thanks

    Hi Zac,
I am not sure what you mean by an X-Bar graph. R has a box plot. Is that perhaps what you want?
More information will lead to a solution .
A screen shot of what you are trying to achieve will help.

  • Linked charts: Error bars are not updated

Linked charts work well: Changed values for bar graph and line graph y values in Numbers are reflected in Keynote and Numbers after “updating”. However, I cannot get error bars to be updated as well. They just keep the values they had when I first paste a graph into Keynote or Pages.
Is this a bug, or am I missing something?

It seems that you missed something.
In the Pages User Guide we may read:
    *+Updating a Chart Copied from a Numbers Document+*
+If you’ve created a chart in Numbers, you can copy it and paste it into your Pages document. After it’s been pasted into Pages, the chart remains linked to the data tables it references in Numbers. +To update a chart after you’ve updated its linked Numbers table:+

  • Error bar problem

This must be simple, but I can't figure out how to make either a standard deviation or a standard error bar to a chart.
I place the numbers 22, 33, 44 in three adjacent cells. I highlight them and see average in the lower left area. I drag this average button to a new cell, and viola the cell says 33. I click the cell and click chart and make a bar chart and get a chart that has a bar at 33. I then click the inspector and under advanced click error bars and positive and negative. For fixed value it works fine. For standard deviation or standard error, the error bar does not exist?!! How do I use the std dev or std error buttons to generate the appropriate error bar?
I can't believe this is a bug with the program, it must be a bug with me.
    Please help,
    Paul

Thank-you Yvan for your continued support. I have been working on this as well and spent some time with a VERY receptive and helpful Apple specialist, Chris. Indeed, what I was looking for was a chart like Yvan posted as Graphique 6. A version I created is here (hopefully I've got this image insert working:
    image: !http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/HeCHRLWhs3C79ewObd_TdA?feat=directlink!
I made the error bars by using a formula to generate the standard deviation:
    image: !http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/FnKGk70HlsKmn38cYPYQFw?feat=directlink!
Then generated custom error bars with that cell:
    image: !http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/5IQm4ncUiq-Q9R8H2bb3zQ?feat=directlink!
I just discovered that Excel implements the one-click error bars identically to Numbers. It is counterintuitive (to me and my coworkers who have listened to my ranting today) that the one click standard error or standard deviation buttons would not give the standard deviation or standard error plots on the average bar, rather than on a series of bars, as if they were independent data. Here is one of countless examples of data from peer reviewed scientific literature of how this type of plot is (and IMHO should be) used:
    image: !http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/5IQm4ncUiq-Q9R8H2bb3zQ?feat=directlink!
One can see that some of the values are within the standard error of the other values, and some are significantly different.
But I now realize that because the implementation is the same as in Excel, it is unlikely that the feature will be changed to what I see is a more logical use of the one-click button, since we can use the custom buttons if we really want to chart differently...
I want to thank Apple and the responders to this thread for their time and patience.

  • Error bars on graphs

I was desperately hoping that Apple would include the ability to add error bars to charts in this release. As a research faculty member, I simply cannot present data at conferences without having error bars on the graphs. It is a shame, because I have heard numerous others in the life sciences make the same complaint - we would love ot switch to using iWork completely, but the lack of error bars is a deal-breaker.
Anyone have a reasonable workaround? Right now I end up creating the graphs in Deltagraph or even Excel, and then exporting them as jpgs and using them, but it is not as fast or as good looking as if I could just do it in Keynote/Numbers.
    Ideas?
    Fish

I'm also an academic (social sciences), and I also was disappointed that there wasn't an option for error bars. I don't really blame Keynote for this--I have low expectations of presentation software creating good data visualizations--but--but I was assuming it would be in the new Numbers application, and with that the feature embedded in Keynote's charts.
At least Keynote does still do a nice job of taking in graphs from other applications. I just copy and paste (via export or screen grab) from JMP (or SPSS or Excel) and directly paste into a Keynote slide and go from there.

  • How can I display different error bars for each point on a scatter graph?

I have a scatter chart in Numbers and I need to add error bars to the points along both the x and y axes, however, the size of the error bars for each point need to be of different sizes. Is there a way to accomplish this or is there some kind of work around to acheieve a similar result? So far the only way I can find to add error bars only allows a standard amount for each point.

  • Even after resets get "The backup disk image "/Volumes/FreeAgent GoFlex Drive/MacBeth (2) 1.sparsebundle" could not be created (error 22)."

HELP!  "The backup disk image “/Volumes/FreeAgent GoFlex Drive/MacBeth (2) 1.sparsebundle” could not be created (error 22)."
TC estimates over 750GB for full backup.
Late 2010 MBA is connected wirelessly to
802.11n (1st gen) TC that is connected via ethernet hub built into house to motorola router using charter.com for internet.
I have had same problem for over 150 days and multiple reboots, restarts in proper order, firmware updates, unplugs with 5min plus gaps, bypassing the tc and using external 500gb WD mybook via usb to time capsule, replacement of the WD mybook to new 2TB Free Agent GoFlex drive, etc, etc, etc!  Note: I originally named my MBA hard drive MacBeth, but at some point months ago, it said backup already existed and system automatically created MacBeth (2), worked for a while, then stopped again, despite trying nearly daily.
I gave up and started using Carbon Copy Clone daily for just the 128gb on internal SSD of my late 2011 11" MacBook Air, but need to get past these time capsule errors to back up the external disk!  Due to lack of space in MBA, I had long ago transferred both itunes and iphoto and all imovie/fcpx files to a 1tb external disk (WD Passport) that I keep in my bag with MBA.  It is partitioned with 150gb for cloning the MBA, and over 750gb for media/itunes/iphoto/etc.
Also, I have endured months of "your hard drive is full" messages and system lockups, applying the solution given to me by genious bar (deleting all aol.com outboxes/recovered messages/spam/trash under library/mail/V2/Mailboxes folders, empty trash, restart....watch recovered hard drive space mysteriously shrink next couple days to zero.....repeat)
Due to lack of space, I had not been able to do javascript and other system updates.  Yesterday, I noticed even safari bookmark bar had mysteriously emptied (not disappeared, I can hide and show the space where the bar used to be - it is just blank area with no data except for eyelass-book-topsites icons), so I transferred a few large quicktime movie files recorded with isight camera to the external disk, and freed up 20 gbs for the first time!
This got my hopes up yesterday because after I completed all system/software updates, suddenly the bookmark bar showed up and I was able to start the time capsule backup! It took overnight preparing for backup, but finally started and progressed to 12gb of the 100gb+ needed (i guess the update where it left off months ago for the estimated 750gb for the full backup?), then I put system to sleep and took it with me (thus leaving the wireless time capsule network as I do daily fully expecting it to continue when I returned home in the evening.)  But alas, upon return, back to the "Time Machine could not complete backup, The backup disk image ".....sparsebundle" could not be created (error 22)"  Ugh!  More reboots, unplugs, 5min gaps....still Ugh!
So the problem continues...please help!  Here are my settings:
    About this mac:
    Mac OS X V. 10.7.5
    processor 1.6 ghz intel core 2 duo, memory 4 4g 1067 MHz DDR3
    software up to date!
    Airport Utility:
    V 6.2 (620.33)
both internet globe and TC show green dots in graphic, however internet occasionally shows yellow then goes to green, but still gets error 22.  Suddenly TC showed explanation mark and says lost connection and asked if I wanted to 'forget', gave same errors, then mysteriously went back to green, but still got error 22!.
    Internet:
connection: connected, displays router address, 2 dns server, and domain name: charter.com
    Time Capsule:
shows network, ip address, serial number, version 7.6.3, status: (green dot) Setup over WAN,
wireless clients: phones, macbooks (including this MBA), printers, wii
If you need other settings to help me, just ask!  I have read a few of the other solutions in forums, but trying not to erase disks, especially since it worked for a minute yesterday!

To step sideways.. why not just use CCC to backup the 750GB of the hard disk to the TC.
You need to understand this is going to be a super slow process and each time you stop it.. it is going to give issues. CCC will at least do a more reliable job of it than TM.
I would also say.. this is going to be tough without ethernet. You need to understand the backup speed over wireless can be 10GB per hour.. that makes 75hrs to backup the disk. The air needs to run non-stop doing that.. without you touching it.
I would get another external drive.. plug that into the MBA and if you really want to use TM.. make a backup one to the other.. but CCC will again do a better job and work faster. It will be much faster than over wireless.
I am trying to think of ways around the issue of just speed.. but plainly you have lots of other issues.. being the simple unreliablity of the TM to identify the TC.
If you want to make this work.. give yourself a weekend.
Load 5.6 utility into the MBA..
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
Take the TC back to 7.5.2 firmware. It is a really old version and latest firmware does it no good at all.
Wipe its hard disk using erase and start over.. give it new names for everything.
    So call it TC
Set the wireless to 5ghz and name it TC5ghz
Use WPA2 Personal security. Use a 10 character passkey non dictionary.
At 5ghz you should get 2x the speed as at 2.4ghz but the air will need to be right next to the TC..
(alternatively buy the USB to ethernet cord apple have available.. it is $30 in the apple store and do it over pseudoethernet. http://store.apple.com/au/product/MC704ZM/A/apple-usb-ethernet-adapter That is the wrong store but you get the idea. )
WIth a fully clean system.. now do a full reset of TM.
    See A4 http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
Direct the TM to back to the TC.. and make sure the external hard disk is not excluded.
Of course the TC has to be 1TB version to fit that much data.. goes without saying right.
Even over pseudo - ethernet this will take many hours.. and you basically have to leave it to work.. do not touch it.. make sure the MBA cannot sleep though.. turn off sleep.. beforehand.
