Creating files in user directory results in "Operation not permitted" error

Hello everyone,
I have a FileVault-secured home directory on my PowerBook G4 running OS X 10.4.6 which gives me some headache, as you can see from the following Terminal session:
arepty-powerbook:~ arepty$ touch fubar
touch: fubar: Operation not permitted
I am definitely in the correct directory, logged in as the correct user, have enough free disk space and the directory has the correct permissions, as you can see below:
arepty-powerbook:~ arepty$ pwd
/Users/arepty
arepty-powerbook:~ arepty$ whoami
arepty
arepty-powerbook:~ arepty$ id arepty
uid=501(arepty) gid=501(arepty) groups=501(arepty), 81(appserveradm), 79(appserverusr), 80(admin)
arepty-powerbook:~ arepty$ df -h | grep '/Users/arepty'
/dev/disk2s2 74G 64G 11G 86% /Users/arepty
arepty-powerbook:~ arepty$ ls -l /Users/ | grep arepty
drwx------ 180 arepty arepty 6222 May 3 12:31 arepty
Am I missing something here or is my FileVault-directory perhaps fubar? Thanks in advance for any help you guys might be able to give me.
Cheers,
Alex
PowerMac G5 & PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

That is good to know, but it will probably make it ever harder to locate the cause of this problem. In the meantime, I made a backup of my FileVault-enabled user directory on my PowerMac and reinstalled the operating system on my PowerBook. During the backup, I have encountered a couple of I/O errors so I'm guessing either the filesystem was damaged (and could not be completely repaired by Disk Utility, which I have tried) or the hard drive is damaged.
Just to be on the safe side, I have ordered a new hard drive and exchanged it (wouldn't want to risk data loss with the old hard drive) and everything works perfectly again with a completely new user directory.
I am still wondering what caused all this trouble though, since I want to avoid another incident like this in the future.

the number of errors is not high at all. Leopard would very often produce at least 3 to 4 times as many.
It could have something to do with me running snow leopard on a Macbook Pro 2.16 core duo and not a core 2 duo... ?
no, that would not have anything to do with it. as i said, those are most likely just errors in the permissions database. as i said, leopard was notorious for those. snow leopard is not as bad but produces a number of them too. I just haven't seen this particular kind of messages before. reinstalling SL will fix them but it seems like a serious overkill in this case.

  • Acrobat 8 Form - "This Operation Not Permitted" error when enable user rights and open Reader X

I have a form which is causing me fits.  It was created from an existing PDF form to which I added data fields using LifeCyele Designer.
When I enable user rights to the document and try to open it in either Adobe Reader X or Acrobat 8 Pro I get the message "This operation is not permitted" twice.  Once I get rid of the messages the form works fine.
Is there a way to upload the form to this forum for someone to look at it?
With my limited knowledge, I did try to investigate embeded font issues and hidden object issues.  But after much work I've not gotten much closer to a resolution.
    Best,

You cannot upload the file to the forum, but you can use Acrobat.com or Dropbox if you have an account. If you ha e no other options I'd be happy to take a look: acroscript at gmail dot com

    Hi
Well, it is not advised to do it manually, the logged in user (sidadm)
should have the permissions, the reason being it is required at several points of time and with several folders..
However, for learning purpose, here is the syntax to be given in command line-
chgrp -R groupname <directoryName> (for all subdirectory - recursive)
I gave this jsut to cross verify, please assign the access rights (add to admin group) and then continue installation,
    Revert for queries,
    Cheers

  • USB hard disk: operation not permitted how[SOLVED]

    hello guys,
I have a usb hard disk with ntfs filesystem. I formatted the drive in windows. Now I want to backup some files on it. Whenever I try to create a folder in it, it says operation not permitted.
How can I change the permission?

And make sure they're not mounted as Read-Only in fstab:
    /dev/cdrom           /media/cd      iso9660   ro,user,noauto,unhide    0      0
    /dev/dvd               /media/dvd    udf           ro,user,noauto,unhide    0      0
Works better for disc drives, flash drives occasionally. Hard drives... not so much.

I've wanted to chown backup files from 502 to 501 (sudo find PATH -uid 502 -print0 | xargs -0 chown USERNAME) but I've received when chowning directory

  • Chmod operation not permitted

I tried to burn a data DVD, got Error code 0x80020000, and the Finder created a burn folder (although I NEVER set my preferences for this and hate it) that is locked and the √ for Locked is greyed. I want to ditch the burn folder because I always like to name the DVD and the burn folder acquired the name I want to use for the DVD (can't have two disks same name locally, right?). No matter either way about naming, I still want to unlock and trash this burn folder. It has permissions: owner = (Me) Read & Write, Group = staff Read only, everyone Read only. Using Terminal, I tried "sudo chmod a+w foldername.fpbf", but the result was "Operation not permitted". Is the all (a) parameter wrong? Is the parameter wrong? Is it because w permission is already applied to the owner? I thought that doesn't matter.

Sure you can. Don't knock it 'till you've tried it.

That folder probably has extended attributed. Try unlocking it via the Finder. You may have to toggle it on and then off, maybe a couple of times.

  • Operations not permitted

    Hi
I have a MacBook Pro with a corrupted copy of Snow Leopard 10.6.8 installed on the HD (I say corrupted because if I try selecting the HD as the startup disk I'm locked at the pretty spinning gear screen). The problem started when I went a little OCD on system files and tried to make everything look pretty but accidentily deleted necessary things... IE... the entire utilities folder and what not... anyway I'm using my factory install disk with Snow Leopard 10.6.3 to run Disk Utility and Verify/Repair the permissions but I keep getting "operations not permitted", errors... I'm semi-comfortable in using the Terminal from my OS disk if anyone knows the commands necessary to fix the permission issues.
Any help is greatly appreciated -- I really don't want to lose my files (Silly me... I never used Time Machine or a external HD to backup anything important) and I'd like to have my Mac running smoothly!
    Thanks so much,
    Timothy

You should not be getting any kind of error message when trying to install, if you're booted from the DVD. I can't comment further on that without knowing what the message is.
As for backing up, you can do that within Disk Utility, but you should have done it long before now. If you don't make regular backups, you'll inevitably lose all your data.

  • Can't get rid of files with sudo rm: Operation not permitted?!?

I just noticed that I have a few directories in my files that have a username of "unknown" from GetInfo (username of 314112960 from ls -l) and can't be touched by me. I opened Terminal, and tried to "sudo chown" and "sudo chmod" them; both came back with "Operation not permitted". Can someone tell me how it's possible that su is not allowed to touch them, and more importantly, how I go about civilizing them so that I can see what's there and get rid of it? Thanks,
    Mike

    ls -lod yourfile
If it says schg, then you have to reboot into single
user's mode (hold down command-s while the machine
reboots), then run fsck (the prompts will suggest
what to type, so you don't have to memorize it here),
then mount the file system, run fsck again if there
was a problem reported the first time, and when you
get the all clear, then navigate to where the file
    is, issue the command
    chflags noschg yourfile
    rm -R yourfile
and then run fsck one more time (it helps to be
    paranoid) and then reboot.
Thanks for the specific instructions! I did that and here's what happened.
The first fsck said everything was fine. The chflags was ok as well. I tried to chown both directories then, to see what was there, and the first time it failed with a "operation not allowed" error. I then did rm -R on one of the directories, and it disappeared. I then tried the chown again on the other one, and it worked! Weird. Maybe there's some latency here somehow. Anyway, I decided I wanted the whole thing gone and I did an rm -Rf on it, and it deleted almost everything, except for one file, which was a link to a nonexistent file (it had an ls -l of "lrwxrwxrwx" (is that a hard link?). When I try to delete that one, it says "no such file or directory". I thought rm was supposed to delete the link, not the file the link is pointing to! Anyway, I couldn't think of any way to get rid of it - it just won't let me do it. Anyone have any ideas how to get rid of this link? It's sitting at the bottom of a long tree of directories and I'd now like the whole thing gone... Oh and then I fsck'd again, which said no error, and I rebooted. Finder won't let me delete it either (error 43, file cannot be found). What do you think?
    Thanks,
    Mike

  • [webgl] sluggish performance ( /dev/nvidia0 Operation not permitted )

We (folks on #archlinux already tried helping) have been at this for hours now... no solution found yet.
summary: webgl works but performance is sluggish(20 to 30fps) which makes me assume it's falling back to software rendering for some unknown reason
already tried many things: vmalloc kernel parameters, irq control left to bios/archlinux, being in the video group, not being in the video group, having an xorg.conf, not having an xorg.conf, different AGP aperture sizes in BIOS, regular gl performance is normal (60 fps (capped to display refresh) in glxgears), only webgl slugs, card (GT 7600 256MB VRAM) should support the required shader language version for webgl (and webgl performance is only sluggish in linux... so I think it must be a configuration issue on some driver/kernel/browser setting?)
Different browsers show different messages when started from the console but I don't know what to make of those and googling them did not reveal any solutions so far either.
browsers tested: firefox, google-chrome(from AUR), chromium
    window managers tested: enlightenment, fluxbox
    kernel: linux-lts
driver: nvidia-304xx-lts (can not use Nouveau as Nouveau keeps locking up the GPU)
It's a fresh archlinux installation (Ubuntu had the same performance problem btw in case that might be useful to know for looking for the cause).
Everything I tried so far, did not change anything about the sluggish webgl performance problem.
One thing I noticed is that /dev/nvidia0 and /dev/nvidiactl both do not exist until after "startx". Could that be a problem?
Here are some logs, hoping someone sees something which looks suspicious and knows what else I could try to make it work.

That's all I know. Any ideas?

Still trying...but pretty much stumbling around in the dark here.

Digging around the web I found how to enable fastwrites and did so by

    after reboot, startx

The problem of sluggish webgl performance persists though and the

  • Chown: changing ownership of u01: operation not permitted.

    Hi
I am dual booting Window 8 and Oracle Linux 6 on my system. Both OS is working perfectly. I have one NTFS partition "/dev/sda4" which gets mounted with no issues, when using mount command.
In my / directory of linux system I have created u01 folder. I changed the ownership of this u01 folder from root:root to  oracle:oinstall (oracle user and oinstall group). Now when I am mounting /dev/sda4 to u01 using:
    sudo mount /dev/sda4 /u01
It is getting mounted perfectly but the ownership of u01 is getting changed from oracle:oinstall to root:root again.
Now I am trying to change it back to oracle:oinstall using:
    sudo chown oracle:oinstall /u01
But it is showing error: "chown: changing ownership of u01: operation not permitted. "
Note: My username is oracle and group is oinstall. I have put oracle user in  /etc/sudoers file:
          oracle ALL=(ALL) NOPASSWD:ALL
    Thanks
    Nitish

    Dude,
Actually I wanted to install  oracle database in my linux system. I thought of putting database binaries in my NTFS partition. Everything was worknig fine. I was able to install oracle database such that the binaries are in NTFS partition.
The only problem was that I was not able to change ownership from root:root to oracle:oinstall.  This is recommended by Oracle.
It doesnt matter you are root user or any user you wont be able to change ownsership.
I found out the probelm. Thing is that,  no user can change ownership of NTFS or FAT system. It will always be mounted as root:root. I formatted the partition in EXT2 format and mounted it to /u01 folder. It was root:root then I changed it to oracle:oinstall by chown command and it was successfull.
If you have any other idea or workaround please let me know.
    Thanks
    Nitish
