Creating iBook: iphoto 09 v 11; worth the change?

I'm considering doing my 1st ibook & have iphoto 09.  Mainly, I archive/process photos via Lightroom but do keep some duplicates in iphoto for quicker access to show people snaps. I was wondering if there's something particularly worthwhile improvement-wise with respect to book creation in '11 v'09 iphoto that would make me upgrade first?
(or is there some other 'must-have' aspect of '11 that's worthwhile? I haven't detected such yet.)
Thank you

iPhoto 11 has some new page templates that are nice, like the  2 page layouts.  Don't think it has any new themes over iPhoto 09.
That's a great video you linked to.  Easy to understand.  Thanks.

  • Aperture over iPhoto - Is it worth the money?

I'm sick to death of iPhoto as I now have over 4 different libraries on different hard drives (due to using a laptop and not having enough space, also a recent change in computer), I never know which on is opening and when and it is next to impossible to browse in finder, due to the library not opening as a folder, like iTunes does.
On top of this I went looking for a photo recently and it appears to have disappeared, despite 90% of rest of reel, still there & backed up. I fear the same has happened to another photo as I await one of my iPhoto libraries (which until now I presumed was the master), to upgrade it's software.
I know the whole non-destructive editing means more file on your computer, but don;t understand how itunes can deal with multiple hard drives and iphoto can't (leave a blank thumbnail on the index page if not available at that time, don;t set up a new library)(Rant over!)
I want somewhere, that I can easily and efficiently store my photos in one place so that I don't have to spend 20-40mins trying to find photos when I want them.
Is Aperture worth the €199 and does it solve these issues? Also does it integrate with Photoshop, or will I need to do that manually.
I'm tempted to delete iphoto and just use the finder.

What version of iPhoto are you using?
Iphoto can do what you want, if you take a few moments to set it up.
I want somewhere, that I can easily and efficiently store my photos in one place so that I don't have to spend 20-40mins trying to find photos when I want them.
Get a HD that's large enough for your Photos. Merge your iPhoto Libraries into one and then... you're set.
iTunes doesn't edit. Iphoto (and Aperture) do. That's a rather large difference right there.
Aperture is much more powerful than iPhoto, yes it does integrate with Photoshop, in a broadly similar way to iPhoto. But I'm concerned that if you find iPhoto frustrating hen you may have bigger issues with Aperture.
on different hard drives (due to using a laptop and not having enough space, also a recent change in computer), I never know which on is opening and when and it is next to impossible to browse in finder,
For instance, you can easily set Aperture to run a Referenced Library (where you decide where the files are stored) (and you an do that easily with iPhoto too), but that's of no use to you if you want email or upload the +edited shots you make+. They can't be accessed via the Finder either. (because there is not edited file in Aperture!)
Here's a handy guide I make for iPhoto users to access their files. Almost all of these work for Aperture too.
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
*For Users of 10.5 and later*
You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
(Note the above illustration is not a Finder Window. It's the dialogue you get when you go File -> Open)
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
*For users of 10.4 and later* ...
Many internet sites such as Flickr and SmugMug have plug-ins for accessing the iPhoto Library. If the site you want to use doesn’t then some, one or any of these will also work:
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. However, if you're using Gmail you can use iPhoto2GMail
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
*If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running*:
For users of 10.6 and later:
You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu. Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
For Users of 10.4 and later:
Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
    Other options include:
    1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
O, and by the way, Aperture is much less that €199 on the App store. I recall it's about €70 or thereabouts.
You can download a trial from the Aperture pages on the Apple Site, too

    Are you sure, TD?
When I open a library  I created in iPhoto 9.6 in Aperture 3.6, the Photo Books will give me this warning:
"iPhoto Print Projects" cannot be edited in Aperture."
It is also mentioned in   Aperture 3: Using a unified photo library with iPhoto and Aperture - Apple Support

Books, calendars and cards you create in iPhoto are visible in the Source list in Aperture, but cannot be edited. Books, web pages, and web journals you create in Aperture are not visible in iPhoto.

  • I'm not able to create a iphoto calendar with the correct birthday entries.

    Hello,
I use the latest Iphoto version and OS X 10.9.
I tried to create a calendar in iphoto that includes all birthday information of my family. Unfortunately I'm not able to do this.
I tried two differnt ways to get the information into the calendar.
First of all I' tried to use the option of the calendar to get the information of my contacts and it partly worked. Some dates were missing and I was not able to modify or add additional birthdays in the calendar. I checked my contacts and the information was there but not shown in the Iphoto Calendar.
Therefore I have to get the information into the calendar in a different way. For that I created a new calendar in ICal and created for each Birthday entries.
I select the option in the Iphoto calendar to show the new calendar in iPhoto. But the result was worse than with the first solution. Only few entries was shown in the calender.
Do anybody have an idea how can I solve this issue.
    Thank you in advanced,
    Philipp

Some dates were missing and I was not able to modify or add additional birthdays in the calendar. I checked my contacts and the information was there but not shown in the Iphoto Calendar.
Do the birthdays (from Contacts) show correctly in the Calendar app? Sometimes there is a formatting problem with the date string in the Contacts. If the Birthdays do not show correctly in the Calendar.app, try to delete them from Contacs and enter them again, and check, if they now are showing correctly in Calendar. Quit both Contacts and Calendar.
Then restart iPhoto, and in the "Settings" for your Photo Calendar disable the Birthdays option, and then turn it on again.
Any changes you do to the birthdays in Contacts may only appear in iPhoto Calendars after Calendar or Contacts wrote their databases, and iPhoto will read these databases, when you enable the "Birthdays" option. Toggling this option on and off will ensure, that the new Contacs info will be read.

  • How do I open make iBooks regognize two books created in iBA as different books/files? (iBooks opening separate books as the same file)

I am trying to load two different books created in iBooks Author into iBooks. These books were exported instead of uploaded to the iBookstore, therefore I download them and then open with iBooks on an iPad.
    Here is my problem:
When I download a book (Book A), it opens in iBooks correctly. If I download a second book (Book B),  instead of opening  Book B, iBooks re-opens Book A. This also happens vice-versa if I delete Book A and then upload Book B. Essentially, both books cannot be loaded in iBooks at the same time, and iBooks treats the second download/open attempt as the second book being opened, when in actuality it opens the wrong book.
When I looked at the authoring files, I saw they had the same title listed in the Book Pane in iBA. Even when this title is changed, the books fail to open correctly in iBooks.
Has anyone run into a similar problem? Also, I am wondering if legacy meta data is a possible reason for iBooks to open the same book twice instead of loading and opening the new book? (if this is the case, is there a way that this legacy meta data can be deleted)?
Thanks in advance for your help/support.

    Update: Solved.
Either creating a new file or saving the old as a template file & renaming it solved my problem.

I want to order a second copy of an existing iPhoto book. Though created in the smaller format now only the larger format is showing. How can I switch an existing iPhoto book back to the smaller format?

To change a book size duplicate it (select the book in the source pane and press command and D) since text flow and picture  placements can change due to the size differences - then click on change themes, select the same theme and the new size
    check it carefully
Before ordering your book preview it using this method - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1040 - and save the resulting PDF for reference - the delivered book will match it.

  • Don't change 1st slide of a show created in iPhoto '08 and converted to '09

I discovered that a slideshow that was created in iPhoto '08 and then converted to '09 (i.e., the whole library file was converted) can cause iPhoto to freeze if you change the 1st photo in the show, e.g., by moving another photo into the 1st position (iPhoto doesn't crash -- it just fails to respond to all mouse interactions, and you can't even kill iPhoto via Apple-CMD-Q).
So -- warning if you have '08 slide shows converted to '09 -- don't try this!!!
I have submitted a bug report to Apple's iPhoto support, but my guess is that the bug is due to such a weird combination of circumstances that they won't place high priority on fixing it. In case you're interested in further details, here's the description I wrote in my bug report:
    ========
I recently bought a new iMac with Leopard and iLife '09. I copied several iPhoto '08 (version 7.1.5 -- I believe that's the latest version available for OS X 10.4) library files from an old PowerBook G4 running OS X 10.4.11. When I opened them in iPhoto '09 iPhoto asked me to convert them to the new version and I did so. I can view, edit, run slideshows, etc. of all my updated iPhoto '08 library files fine in iPhoto '09 -- except for one very annoying bug!
When working in iPhoto '09 with a slideshow that was created in iPhoto '08 and converted to '09:
When I move a slide in the slideshow browser to the 1st position of the slideshow and then either Play the slideshow or try to select other photos in the slideshow browser that causes iPhoto to freeze (not crash, there is no Crash Log file). iPhoto stops responding to mouse clicks, there's no way to unhide the Dock with the mouse, and I can't even kill iPhoto with the Apple-CMD-Q keystroke (to terminate iPhoto I use Apple-CMD-TAB to switch to a Terminal shell, find the process id, and then use the shell's "kill -9 pid" command). When this happens I find that after moving a slide to the 1st position in the browser the 1st position in the browser shows a blank instead of the photo that was moved there. When I click on other photos (other than the 1st one) the image gets refreshed with the wrong photo (the one next to it instead of the correct one). However, I have been able to change the 1st slide by deleting it.
It seems that this error only occurs when moving or changing the 1st slide. Making changes to the other slides in the slideshow doesn't cause any problems.
This error also happens when I make a duplicate in iPhoto '09 of a slide show that was originally created in iPhoto '08 and then converted to iPhoto '09 and try to change its 1st slide.
When working with slideshows created in iPhoto '09 none of these problems never occur.

I have been having this same problem even with slideshows created in iPhoto '09. I also reported it to Apple Support. I found a work-around in the meantime, and it might work for you as well.
First of all I discovered the problem when I moved the last thumbnail into the first position. What eventually worked was moving that thumbnail into the second position, and then moving the first thumbnail into the second position. For some reason this did not cause a freeze, and the slideshow played.
As for iPhoto not responding to mouse clicks, I had the same experience. I placed my cursor on the desktop and clicked on it. This enabled me to access the drop down menu from the Apple icon and then I was able to use the force quit option.
I hope this information is helpful.

  • Opening iphoto I get an error message that says "you can't open your current photo library using this version of iphoto.  You have made changes to your photo library using a newer version of iphoto.  Please quit and use the latest version of iphoto.

Opening iphoto I get an error message that says "you can't open your current photo library using this version of iphoto.  You have made changes to your photo library using a newer version of iphoto.  Please quit and use the latest version of iphoto."  I wouldn't have a clue as to how to change to a new version of iphoto even if I wanted to.

If you don't have a backup you can resort to give this a try:
Starting over from scratch with new library
Start over with a new library and import the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from your original library as follows:
    1. Open the library package like this.
    2. Launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
    3. Drag the subfolders of the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from the open iPhoto Library package into the open iPhoto window a few at a time.
This will create a new library with the same Events (but not necessarily the same Event names) as the original library but will not keep the metadata, albums, books slideshows and other projects.
Note:  your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.

i just finished my 100 page book! I opened my computer and the 100 pages that I made had a days work all gone. I saved it as a pdf though. I want to order it, but i cant open the pdf file in iphoto.

or if not how do i go opening my pdf file?

    lorenzoliza:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Unfortunately you can't order from a pdf file. There just is no way to recover that book. For future books I suggest you create a separate library. Then put your photos in an album in the primary library and use iPhoto Library Manager to copy them to the book library. You can then start a new book and quit after a few pages to see if the changes will be kept. If not try deleting iPhoto's preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, and the restart iPhoto. You'll have to reset the preferences but that may solve the problem. Also go into your User/Library/Caches folder and delete the iPhoto cache folder.

  • When dragging an iPhoto event to iDVD, the order in which the pictures appear changes without any apparent rhyme or reason.  Any ideas on how to prevent that from happening?

When importing an iPhoto event into iDVD (iLife '11 versions of both) by dragging it from iPhoto to iDVD, the sequence of the photos is far different in the iDVD project than in the iPhoto event, without any apparent rhyme or reason for the change.  Any way to avoid having to resort all the photos in iDVD?

Create an album from that Event and sort the photos the way you want.  Then drag that album icon from the Media Browser in iDVD into the slideshow area.  They will import in the order that's in the album.

  • Changing music played within a QuickTime movie created form iPhoto

I am trying to create a QuickTime movie from iPhoto which I have figured out, but I can not figure out how to change the default music. iPhoto indicates that it will use the default music from slideshow, but I can not see where to change that in slideshow preferences? I am able to change the music successfully in a slideshow played within iPhoto, but it does not ripple acorss to the newly created QuickTime movie.

when you're creating your slideshow, you just click the music button (in iPhoto '09 in the older versions it might be in the settings, I don't remember) and choose your song and hit apply. Make sure the "Play music during slideshow" box is checked. Play your slide show (not preview) because this is just what it will look like as a quicktime. Go to export, choose quicktime and check the box that says "Add currently selected slideshow music to movie"
I can assure this works because I was following these steps as I was writing them and I just successfully played a QT with my own music
