Creating Icons/Graphics for High DPI Displays, naming and sizing

I'm having to create and deliver graphics and icons for a native desktop windows applications that must support Windows 8.1 and variety of screen resolutions which ranges from standard resolution monitors to new 4k high density displays.
Typically for iOS you would deliver an icon using the following size and naming convention to support both standard and Retina 2x devices.
Standard Resolution
Icon-72.png (actual size 72x72 pixels)
Retina Display
[email protected] (actual size 144x144 pixels)
For Android on a 4k device, you might do the following:
[email protected] (actual size 288x288 pixels)
My question is would you also follow this same naming and sizing convention for native Windows 8.1 desktop apps? I'm assuming you would, but I'm getting some pushback.
This is slightly new territory in Windows desktop, but I'm hoping there may be a few who have experience and offer there suggestions.
Thank you and best regards,

  • Palette & Panel (UI) size adjustment for High DPI display?

    Hello,
    I just got a nice new Dell XPS laptop with a super high resolution screen (3200x1800), similar to Apple's retina display.  I thought it would be great for editing photos on the go.  Unfortunately all the user interface elements of Light Room (panels, palettes, menus, etc.) are tiny.  They're so small I can barely see them.  Is it possible to adjust their size?  The only solution I've found is to change the display settings to reduce the resolution to that of a normal monitor, which defeats the purpose.  Please tell me their is a way to fix this.
    I'm running Lightroom 4.4 on Windos 8.  Would be glad to upgrade to LR 5 if I knew that would fix it.
    Thanks,
    Paul

  • Make Skype work properly with Windows DPI scaling for high resolution displays

    Hello, As of now, Skype does not work well with Windows DPI scaling. Everything looks fuzzy (fonts, icons, etc).Microsoft's recommendation is to turn off the DPI scaling ( http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2900023 ) but in this case, the text is too tiny to be read. Basically everyone with a high resolution display is stuck with either tiny of fuzzy fonts, making Skype unusable. It's really a pity because other Microsoft programs such as Office work perfectly with Windows DPI scaling, and Skype also looks great on Mac with Retina display. With high DPI displays becoming more and more common, this is a must have feature. Thanks for reading!

  • Support for High-DPI screens Windows

    This was posted two months ago by someone else, but I feel that it is too important to be ignored. I have a QHD resolution Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro laptop, and I use Spotify almost constantly. However, I almost never use the desktop app; with DPI scaling, the scaling is fine, but the resolution is horrrible. With my display, I would hope for 1080p resolution (at least), but apparently it will never happen. My question is: is it possible for the Spotify developers to create a Windows program with high DPI support? Or maybe a Windows 8 app? Pretty please?

    Hi there,
    I guess you are talking about this idea, I do agree that this idea is very important.
    As soon as an idea reaches 100 kudos it will reach the spotify team and they will change the status. To learn more about the processing of ideas read this post "How your feedback reaches Spotify"
    If would suggest to add your kudos and support in that idea, and keep sharing it on sites like Facebook, Twitter...

  • Embedded objects do not scale on high-dpi displays

    I am using a new Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro laptop with a 3200 x 1800 display. Though in general the high-DPI scaling works to keep text sharp for most webpages (something that cannot be said for Chrome or Opera), Flash does not scale with the rest of the website. For example, when I watch a Youtube video, the text, objects, etc. scale appropriately, but the buttons for the flash player are very small.
    https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/30375975/youtube_screenshot_problem.png

    Does this occur with all flash content?
    Please consider contacting the Adobe support team about this issue.<br>
    I think that maybe Flash Player is not compatible with this high screen resolution.

  • Firefox ignores Windows 8's compatability setting for high dpi screens.

    I recently tried the Windows 8.1 Preview, but then reset my machine to Windows 8 again.
    Before this, the first time I installed Firefox, it ran at a low resolution, so all the toolbars and content appeared huge and blurry. I fixed this with the Windows 8 compatibility setting disable display scaling on high DPI settings"
    After resetting the machine, and installing Firefox again, it was back to being blurry, so I changed the compatibility setting again, but this time, nothing happened. Even with the setting on, Firefox ignores it. Every other program with this setting works fine, and Firefox worked fine the last time around.
    I was advised in the Windows support forums to ask the question here.

    You can modify the layout.css.devPixelsPerPx and increase or decrease the value in 0.1 or 0.05 steps to adjust the size of fonts and other elements in Firefox.
    *The layout.css.devPixelsPerPx pref is a String value parsed to a float and allows to fine tune the dimensions of all elements (user interface and web pages) more precisely (resolution 0.1 or 0.05).
    *Change the default value -1 to 1 to make it work like in previous Firefox versions (100%)
    Start with a value of 1 and adjust this value with 0.1 steps or 0.05 for finer adjustments.
    *Use values between 1.0 and about 0.5 to reduce elements in size (do NOT go all the way to 0.05!)
    *Use values greater than 1.0 to magnify and make elements larger (percentage divided by DPI, % / DPI).
    *http://kb.mozillazine.org/about:config
    If web pages needs to be adjusted after changing this pref then you can look at the Default FullZoom Level or NoSquint extension.
    *Default FullZoom Level: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/default-fullzoom-level/
    *NoSquint: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/nosquint/
    Use this extension to adjust the font size for the user interface:
    *Theme Font & Size Changer: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/theme-font-size-changer/

  • I have a high resolution display (3200x1800) and a 13" laptop, but my CC-applications have microscopic icons at the point of being useless.

    The text based menus are ok, and is the only option that can be configured to a larger size.
    But the icons in the CC applications are so tiny that they are practically useless.
    Even extended on a separate 24" LCD display the interface icons are too small.
    So, having searched a lot on the topic of high resolution displays, the OS will scale an application appropriately if it is designed correctly.
    I am running Windows 8.1, and i.e. the applications in the Office pack scale perfectly. Not so strange, perhaps, being MS.
    When will CC get this upgrade?
    Kind regards,
    Thomas

    Please take a look at: Photoshop CC / Windows 8.1 HiDPI / Retina scaling support at the moment Adobe works with Microsoft to work on scaling for HiDPI devices. See reaply from Chris Cox
    "Again, we're continuing to work with Microsoft on the scaling problems in Windows.
    We, and they, recognize that the existing attempts to offer scalable UI have serious issues.
    And no, we can't commit to a timeframe for a long list of reasons."
    So you need some patience as HiDPI is getting more and more popular i assume it will be anytime soon.

  • Intermittent bug in Touchpad One-Finger Scrolling with High-DPI display scaling

    This one is quite strange (since it does not happen all the time) but very annoying - on my T420s (with 1600x900 screen) I am using 150% DPI scaling in Windows7 (Pro x64). Ultranav driver is 16.2.5.0.
    I am using the preinstalled Chrome browser in a rather default configuration - and by default that program declares itself not High-DPI-aware and gets scaled up by desktop composition - something that can be changed in the properties from the compatibility tab, but which I keep like that since there are sites that look better this way!
    Long story short - touchpad scrolling fails to work in more than 50% of the cases in that specific Chrome setup in a way that strongly suggests it is a bug where the touchpad scrolling program fails to account for the fact that Chrome runs "scaled-up" - if Chrome is maximized and the mouse is positioned in the top half AND left-half of the screen scrolling works as expected, HOWEVER when the mouse pointer is positioned (still 100% over the Chrome window) towards the right/bottom extremes scrolling fails and the Ultranav driver seems to send the scrolling messages to some other window than Chrome! (since it seems to fail to take into account the 150% scaling - so it gets wrong values with GetWindowRect and should probably use instead stuff like DwmGetWindowAttribute(hWnd, DWMWA_EXTENDED_FRAME_BOUNDS...))!
    Steps to repeat the bug:
    - Windows 7 machine, large-resolution screen with Custom DPI text size set to 150% and the older XP-style scaling disable (which enables the new DWM scaling)
    - Chrome browser in default mode (which will use scaling); to repeat things easily the window should be maximized and the URL should be set to some long page on which scrolling can be performed
    - scrolling should be enabled in Touchpad settings (I do not normally use ChiraMotion, but I do not think it makes a difference)
    - mouse pointer should be positioned in the right-most 10% of the window and Touchpad One-Finger Scrolling should be attempted;
    - in many/most cases the scrolling messages are sent to some other window beneath Chrome (but NOT always, so it seems there might be another factor in play)
    - it is interesting that the different TrackPoint scrolling seems to work even in those conditions.

    You won't get a response from Adobe in these user-to-user forums but you will be heard if you post your frustration via the official bug report form:

    Don't expect a formal personal reply though.

  • Is there support yet for PC high DPI displays?  I see there is support for Apple....

    Have been a user of Photoshop Elements for many years.  Presently have version 12, which is unusable on my Dell XPS 15" with 4K Ultra HD display.  I found a statement somewhere on Adobe's site that there is support for HiDPI displays from Apple, but no mention of Windows machines.  Scaling, changing resolution, etc. doesn't help - the icons are tiny and can't be seen by my eyes without squinting or a magnifying glass.  I don't want to switch programs but will if support isn't there for displays like mine that are more common every day.....

    Yes, in PSE 13 but definitely do the trial first to see if it works well for your display.

  • How to generate imagemanfiest for high DPI icons?

    We have found that there is a tool allowing to build imagemanifest file from resources. Can you point us to it or to guidlines how it is expected to look like.

    Hi Sergey Kuks,
    Thank you for posting in the MSDN forum.
    You know that actually this forum is to discuss:
    Visual Studio WPF/SL Designer, Visual Studio Guidance Automation Toolkit, Developer Documentation and Help System, and Visual Studio Editor.
    You said that it is one tool, could you share us more information about this tool? Is it related to the VS IDE? When you will use it in your side, developing an app or others? Could you share us more information about it? It seems that
    it is not the VS IDE usage issue.

  • Create overlay graphic for other running programs

    Ok, I have a small idea for creating an "overlay" graphic panel that i wish to hook ontop
    of another running program on the computer.
    For example, lets say we have internet explorer, and i wish to create a small java application
    that will "paint" ontop of internet explorer. Perhaps drawing a transparent image right in
    middle of internet explorer.
    Anyone have any suggestions on how this could be accomplished?

    This is a VI which calls the undocumented MessageBoxTimeout function.
    It is similar to the MessageBox function (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms645505%28v=vs.85%29.aspx), but it does include the ability to have the message go away after a certain amount of time (setting timeout to 0 leaves the dialog open indefinitely).
    If you set Message Box Modality to MB_SYSTEMMODAL, it will display in front of all applications.

  • Creating new graphics object from a existing one and sending it for print

    Hello,
    i have a graphics object which is big in size, I am creating a new graphics object from the existing one as given below
    //map is a graphic object
    Graphic g1 = (Graphic)map.create(x,y,width,height);
    Graphic g2 = (Graphic)map.create(x,y,width1,height1);
    Graphic g3 = (Graphic)map.create(x,y,width2,height2);
    arrayList.add(g1);
    arrayList.add(g2);
    arrayList.add(g3);
    Now I want to send the graphic object g1,g2,g3 for print in the method
    public int print (Graphics g, PageFormat pf, int idx) throws PrinterException {
    // Printable's method implementation
    if (curPageFormat != pf) {
    curPageFormat = pf;
    pages = repaginate (pf);
    if (idx >= 3)) {
    return Printable.NO_SUCH_PAGE;
    g = (Graphics) arrayList.get(idx);
    return Printable.PAGE_EXISTS;
    This is not working... what is wrong. can anybody suggest..
    I tried standardprint.java to print a object inside a scrollpane, it is not printing the entire diagram. so I am thinking of something like this.... Please let me know what to do....
    Thanks
    Serj

    The easy way to do this is create a copy using Windows Explorer.
    Open the project and go to File > Rename.
    Then you have your 2013 ready made project.

  • Flash for higher resolution displays

    Newbie here (using CS3 Professional...just completed first
    basic tutorial). I've been searching Adobe documents and this
    forum, but haven't found an answer to my question. I'm wanting to
    use flash for a tradeshow digital signage application and I need my
    PC to output a flash movie at a resolution of 4080x768. An external
    Matrox card will divide that resolution over three LCD flat-panel
    displays. I learned that Flash's max stage size is 2880 pixels
    either horizontal or vertical. Any workarounds? or is this even
    do-able?
    Thanks!

    If the computer recognized the three monitors as three
    monitors, and not one really wide monitor, then you could run three
    full screen flash programs at the same time, one on each screen,
    also syncing them with localConnection. It could be pretty easy to
    sync content if you created a movie clip to hold all your animation
    (the movie clip can be 4080 px wide) and then animated everything
    so that a very wide clip had the entire animation. Then use a stage
    with a width of 1360 and move this clip to x positions 0, -1360,
    and -2720, each time saving the movie and publishing. If you have
    one that sends localConnection cues to the others, then it should
    be able to sync things up.
    This is much easier said than done of course, as I dunno what
    kind of content you're running, audio, video, etc. Plus, I think
    you're dealing with a situation where you have a computer that sees
    one big screen and not 3 smaller ones, so the second solution might
    not work.
    You could try a similar thing and drop all of them in a
    Director shell, which will do 4080 pixels wide, and use the same
    technique, but that could be a big performance hit, and it adds
    another (expensive) pieces of software.

  • Need Help creating Icon overlays for my SVN Client

    Hi I am currently writing an cross platform SVN client. I have icon overlay working in windows and linux. This is a small image that sits on top of the normal icon in finder and represents the current state of the file, e.i out of sync, up to date, un-versioned. But am really struggling trying to get it to work in OSX. At this point I only want it to work in snow leopard. This is where I have got to so far.
    I managed to create a QL plugin that worked. The only issue with QL plugins is that you have to specify what file types your plugin works for, (my sample worked for gifs). Unfortunately I don't know that as it needs to work for every file and folder on the system that contains a subfolder called .svn. So with a week of reading I have come to the decision that the only real way around this is to override the QLThumbnailImageCreate function that finder calls and replace it with my own if I find a .svn or call the original if not. However if this is the only route I have not been able to get any code to work that will replace the function with my own.
    If any one can show me an example of switching that function, or has an alternative solution. Or knows the LSItemContentTypes type that means my plugin will fire for every single file, then I would be very happy. I've spent no more than 2 days getting this to work on windows and linux, but I've spent soooo many hours on OSX. Any help would be great.

    DanUK wrote:
    Thanks for your reply etresoft. I know it definitely is possible because the application dropbox does it.
    I'm not so sure. People working on the SC Plugin SVN program have been trying to do that for years. I don't know if they have ever gotten it to work.
    But unfortunately its not open source so I can find out how they did it. The only other way I can do it is to monitor file system changes and then set a custom icon. But this has many draw backs. such as custom icons are persistant and will remain even when my software has been uninstalled.
    I think you should really look into using labels. An SVN/CVS user probably isn't going to be using icon view anyway. Labels will be far more useful in real life. Custom icons are just a gimmick.
    I using QT Creator to write the software so if you fancy a go I can share the project with you.
    Perhaps we should stick to our respective SCM programs. I'm not a fan of QT either
