Creating in DW a dropdown menu/navi-bar from png's created in Illustrator

Hey All!
I'm new to Dreamweaver (currently CS5.5) and trying to create webpages for a university-researched based project site.
I'm totally lost as to how to create dropdown menus from buttons and dropdown menus I've created in Illustrator (CS4). I have made the buttons not particularly custom apart from the appearance. There seems to be no way to import from Illustrator unless using slices which only create html linkpages and/or CSS layers (I have no clue on that).
I want to do a number of things:
1. Have a navigation bar
2. When the cursor hovers over the tab it inverts and
(for example) the 'Introduction' tab drop-slides down to show the options.
3. When the cursor hovers over an option the colour changes from light grey to black (?...)
It's a tall order I know, but I've been searching on the web for the last 4 hours and have had no luck in finding what I'm looking for. It is possible isn't it? Surely at this point its possible to do anything with the adobe software?!

I can neither afford to buy such software and nor want to sadly, if I could I would feel I'd learned nothing and have another program do all of the "thrashing" out for me . I'd like to know how it all works, since I'm very new to the whole website design industry (dreamweaver, joomla etc) and I'm keen to learn as much as possible.
Don't take this the wrong way, but the Spry menu bars are fine for an everyday kind of put-together website, however this website is for an academic institution's project and I'm trying my darndest to make sure it doesn't resemble or fall into the category of excessive substance over style. It's a website meant for anyone to use, from the academics who understand the project to the anybody-joe-josie who can use it to learn from the research and products of the project. User-friendly as possible for an academic project. Harder than you think, unless you have seen any academic websites that have all the understandings of layout, clear project description and understanding and product.
Surely there is a way of creating these customisable dropmenus and the masters of said software such as yourselves might find it too time-consuming to give me an idea of where to start, it's cool, I get it.
On paper it's simple; create dropdown menus (slide smoothly) for external links etc, using the .pngs I've designed in Illustrator to give as much aesthetic interaction as possible, that's what I've been assigned to do to replace the quickly-slapped together website there was before. I can't show you the pages I've created from Illustrator using Slices (not a very effective option) since it's under the institution "law" of data protection until ready. I can only provide snippets and the previous website which is being completely updated to meet a brief of "smart, slick, simple".
My definition of that is to have the style of smart, slick and simple whilst having a little more depth and accessibility. All things wonderful get better and evermore intriguing the closer you look.
Thank you again for your help, I'm still learning but I put the hours into something that needs full attention. Plus to whinge (sorry) I'm not being paid, and it's a 3 month schedule. "Tene lupum auribus".

I have home, about myself, resources etc.. each time I make a new page and name it, it automatically lists the webpage name in my nav bar. How can I have pages which do not display in the navigation menu?
1. Open iWeb then select a page you don't want to display in the top navigation bar
2. Open the Inspector and go to the 'Page' tab
3. Uncheck the "Include page in navigation menu" box
4.Now this page will not appear in the navigation menu but the navigation menu will still appear on that page as the "Display navigation menu" is checked (unless you uncheck that one too)

Dropdown menue or selectlist from fetched SQL results

Hello i try to build a selectlist or a dropdown menue from fetched Sql results i tryed many ways to realise this but nothing works is anybody here knowing how to do this?

There's a basic error in your sample code. You query for table_name from user_tables, which basically just lists the tables that exist in your schema. Since you're using 'id' further on, I suspect your query would look something like 'select id from users'.

}This won't work for 2 major reasons.
1. the $id variable is not set to anything. Note that OCIFetch does not extract variables. You can retrieve them using OCIResult($stmt, 'id'). I myself prefer to use OCIFetchInto as it is much easier to use and gives code that is better readable:

}2. You've put the <select></select> code in your loop. I assume that you only want to loop options, so the <select></select> should be moved to outside the loop.

Help Needed with Drop Down Menu/Nav bar

Hello,
I am trying to obtain an effect such as the one at this page:

When you put the mouse on the links above such as "The
Briefing Room" or "The Agenda" a drop menu appears with a series of
links. How does one do that? I haven't been able to figure it out.

Importing Nav Bar from Fireworks

Hi
I am using Dreamweaver MX and Fireworks MX (i know i need to
update
) anyway. I made a navigation bar in fireworks, using
slices, pop-up menus, roll-over behaviors and stuff. (Im a beginner
don't know exactly what's going on hehe.) When i preview it in
Safari (mac) it works perfectly, but once i import it into
dreamweaver and preview in safari, it doesn't work properly, the
pop-up menus go transparent when going on each individual section
in the drop down, but yet you can still see the text, (so what i
think i mean is that the background on the pop-up go transparent
when rolling over) i hope that makes sense. Maybe i havent exported
it properly, or imported it properly, feel free to interegate me.
As long as i get it working ill be happy. Any help
much appreciated, thanks.

Here are the SERIOUS problems with that menu approach -
1. It's not compatible with DW templates
2. It's EXTRAORDINARILY BLOATED CODE (adding some 75K of
weight to your
page)
3. It's NOT maintainable in DW (meaning that if you change a
filename
linked in the menu, DW cannot make that alteration in the
menu code)
4. It's NOT extensible (meaning that once you have inserted
it in your
page, if you then want to add a new submenu, you have to
recreate the new
menu and retrofit your pages with it individually)
5. It's NOT spiderable (meaning that search engines cannot
find your links
to spider your pages - thus, your 50-page site will appear to
Google as if
it were a single page, and would be ranked accordingly)
6. It's NOT accessable (meaning that anyone using a screen
assistive device
would be no better off than Google at finding your interior
pages)
7. It's NOT functional in browsers with javascript disabled
(meaning that
your site would be unusable for anyone who by choice or
occupation finds
themselves in an environment where browsers aren't permitted
to use
javscript)
'nuff said?
It's just plain and simple crap - and a lousy joke that
Macromedia played on
the community.

Changing dropdown menu in Mail "From"

when I send an email from Apple Mail I'm given a drop-down menu of options of who the mail is sent from, i.e., [email protected] or [email protected], etc. --- I'd like to stop using the .mac address' all together but they keep showing up in the drop-down, my question is how do I change the address' in the drop-down to get rid of the .mac address'? I've gone in Mails pref and can't find a way of doing it, I've also changed all of the alias' in MobileMe to .me?
Also, we (MobileMe users) used to have more alias address' available but since the switch to MobileMe all of the address (or should I say what addresses remain) are now doubled, i.e. [email protected] and [email protected] - this takes up two names for every one address? is there a way around this?

You can edit the Server name list in Mail > Preferences > Accounts tab > select any mail account > Us the drop down in Outgoing Mail Server > select edit list.

I made a text nav bar using CSS, and I am trying to get downdown menu's from it?

Hello,
I am working through a tutorial book and just created a text navbar with CSS, which I have never done before. Basically it was an Unordered list and then I used the float property right to make them go next to each other. Then created a few more styles to give them padding etc.
I thought I could go after each list item and now add a group of unordered lists items to pop up when I mouse over., but whatever I try in a new CSS style doesn't work to put them underneath.
Here is the code and the style sheet code thus far, and I have colored in blue, the items I wanted to have dropdown menu's come from. Can anyone help me or guide me to where I might find this info? I want to get to the next level, but this is as far as the book goes.

Yes. Create the style you want to use and save it to the
Styles panel.
With the new style selected, open the Styles panel menu and
choose
Export styles. Export to the Fireworks Nav Menu folder. On my
machine
that's located at
C:\Documents and Settings\Linda Rathgeber\Application
Data\Macromedia\Fireworks 8\Nav Menu
Once you have saved the new style there, it will appear in
the Image >
Styles selections for the pop-up menus.

You could try to create a list with as template Pull Down Menu.
Make sure that you create parent-child relations to get the pull down menu options.
It also depends on the theme you pick up.

I created a template in DW 8. It is used to generate many
other pages for the site. only the page content region is editable.
There is a nav bar in the template. Some buttons of the nav bar
display pop-up menu when MouseOver . Those pop-up menu need to be
changed from time to time. What is the best way to automatically
update the pop-up menu in those templated-generated files, using
template (I tried to define the nav bar as editable region,
modified the pop-ups and saved the template. I got a lots of
unexpected problems, DW8 even crashed), using libray items or
something else? I am a relatively new DW developer. Much appreciate
if someone could help.

template, then changes
to it will propagate automatically to all child pages - are
you not seeing
that happen?

You wouldn't usually want to do that.

You must have made other errors. Doing something like this
would surely not
crash DW.
The only problem with having the navigation in the
non-editable region of
the template is that a change to it will touch *every* file
in the site,
each of which must then be uploaded again. To solve this
problem you can
use server-side includes for the navigation. Then you would
make your
change to the include file, upload it, and all pages would
reflect that
change.

How to create new nav buttons in nav bar

I am trying to design a new site in iWeb. I want to add a row of navigation buttons to go to 8 different pages. All I have in the first page is a button called "welcome" and I cannot add anymore. It won't even let me select rollover colors or anything in that area.
I only have a single page so far. If I add new pages does it automatically create new buttons in the nav bar, and how can I name them?

Hi. Can anyone pls advise what software I use to create a
drop down nav bar like that which is at the top of the adobe

Drop Down Menu Linked to Nav Bar

It looks like the default menu bar that opens up when you click a "my page" or drop down button is layered into the nav bar. That is, if the drop down menu is bigger than the navigation area, it is "hidden" behind that layer.
I would like to bring this menu forward one step, so that it is over the navigation. I can't find where to do this at.
Also, what was the thought behind hiding it, am I missing something about a possible conflict with a browser?

Hi Kirk,
Do you mean how the drop downs do not go below the banner area? If so, it is done that way because of the burn-through problem. In IE a select box (and in Netscape all form inputs) are displayed above all other layers. That means if a there is a select box in one of the portlets on a page, and the drop down drops down over it, the select box will appear on top of the drop down. This will obscure the links in the drop down.
If you don't mind the burn through problem, then there is a variable in navhztlddmenufuncs.js that you can change the value of. Look for the following code in that file.

This is done to avoid a browser intrinsic issue where certain form elements are drawn ontop of any divs/layers. I have created a Fireworks nav bar with drop down menus. Can't get the weblinks to save.

I have been trying to add the web addresses in my Fireworks nav bar drop down menus. I can't get them to "take". I add the address, click done and some of them save and some don't. I am pulling my hair out! HELP!

the easiest way is constructing your menu with frame labels
now i have no way of knowing how you are constructing it ..so
this may not work for you ...i assume that you have created a main
button ...that has been converted into a symbol & then
duplicated to create all other buttons
okay here it goes ..i hope i dont confuse you
i will explain how to create 1 button with 4 submenu items
with the trems that i mentioned above
but iam not going to explain all the details of creating a
whole nav bar

sooo ! ...lets say this is the Portfoio button ...inside the
symbol now
create 8 layers ...the order is going from top to bottom
actions
labels
submenu Logos
submenu Illustration
submenu Animation
submenu Coolstuff ."you will name your button items how you
like" ...
main button....lets just say Portfolio !
invisible btn for main button
so now on with the hard stuff
create 20 frames ...stop action on frame 1 ...frame 9
...frame 20
on the labels layer now ....name frame1 "Closed" ...frame 10
"Open"
on the submenu Logos layer ...create a keyframe on frame 10
all frames before the 10th frame will be blank frames
repeat that for the rest of the submenu items
on the main button layer you will just place the main
Portfolio button on frame 1
& on the invisible button layer ..the inv btn is going to
be placed on frame 10
all this is iam hoping your have converted everything into1
symbol
all you need to do know is attach code to the main Portfolio
button & the invisible button
so click on the Portfolio button
on (rollOver) {
gotoAndStop("open");
invisible button
on (rollOver){
gotoAndPlay("closed");
& that should be good ...very simple !
then just repeat this process for every button that makes up
your nav bar ....& it doesn't matter if your inv buttons
overlap each other or your main nav buttons are touching each other
