Creating mail folders

when i click on 'mailboxes' on my ipad, it shows: inbox, drafts, sent and trash.
is ther a way to create additional folders to save specific emails?

You can't create mail folders on the iPad. If you have an IMAP email account then folder you create on a computer or webmail usually appear on the iPad. If you have a POP3 account you can't.

    How'd you know?
No, you cannot create folders on POP mail accounts on the iPhone. Let Apple know you would like to be able to do that.

  • Syncing created mail folders between:  .Mac, my computer, and my iPhone

When I perform a sync, why don't all the mailbox folders that have been created on my computer also appear on .Mac mail and iPhone mail? Shouldn't they all match exactly?

The sync process just transfers the mail settings, it is there just to help set up the email account on your phone so that you do not have to type your account name and password and the incoming and outgoing server if necessary

  • Mail seems to create Mail folders that are not allowed to be backed up.

The folder in my Home>Library>Mail that had my Inbox in it was titled POP/[email protected]@myserver.net, or the specific equivalent.
When I was backing up everything to an exterior hard drive, I got a message saying the name was too long, or had incorrect characters in it.
I boldly shortened the name by taking the second @myserver.net off, keeping my fingers crossed, and all seemed to go well, until the next time I opened Mail, and most of my Inbox was gone. And all of the emails I had deleted in the last month or so were back in my Inbox.
It turns out that on launching Mail, my computer had created a new POP/[email protected]@myserver.net folder, but had only transferred a small chunk of my old emails to fill it.
So I went back and looked at the POP folder whose name I'd changed, and all the old emails were there. So I copied each item in the non-allowed folder to the Mail folder in the exterior hard drive, created a new folder there with the shortened title POP/[email protected], stuck all the items in it, just for tidiness. I was able to access these mailboxes from my Mail program.
So now I had backed them up, which was a weight off my mind. But I believe I lost emails like this previously when backing up, and didn't figure out how to find and save them, and now they are probably gone forever.
What I want to know is why Mail creates folders with titles that it will not allow itself to back up.

Hello, and welcome to the Discussions.
I think something else must have happened, for I have
never had this happen. I have just tested copying my
POP folder with the longest name, and no problem.
The name had the same number of characters, and
    format as the following:
    [email protected]@mail.xxxxxx.net
However, I note that the form you report (that of
beginning with POP/) is not the current form Mail has
used for some time, but rather would be expected to
begin as "POP-". Nevertheless, I would not have
expected that, alone, to cause the behavior you
    report.
    More info, please.

    Hi Ernie,
Maybe it was something to do with the permissions. Last time I tried to verify my permissions, I was unable to. I got a message saying my disc could not connect with Disc Utility, or was disfunctional in some precarious way. A somewhat scary experience that I am not in a big hurry to repeat.
Based partly on your info, I have decided instead to upgrade to Tiger immediately, and am hoping this will alleviate some or all aspects of these problems.
    Thanks for your input,
    Stephen

  • HT5012 Why can't I create mail folders for my email?

I want to create folder for my email I receive on my
iPhone 5. You only give basic Trash.... Sent....Draft....Incoming

Before doing anything else, is your ringer switch in silent mode?  I'd try toggling the switch a few times to make sure it's working.  The phone should vibrate when you move the switch from on to silent.  If it doesn't then the switch may be broken.
Next make sure the volume for notifications is not off.  Check the Sound settings for this.  Changing the volume there should also cause your (phone) ringtone to play.  If it doesn't then there is something very wrong.
The only other thing I can suggest if the above doesn't help is doing a hard reset of the phone.  Hold power and home buttons down until screen goes dark and Apple icon appears, then let go.
If that doesn't work, then the only other thing you can try is doing a Backup and then a Restore in iTunes.  If that doesn't work, then there's a hardware problem.

  • Creating file folders in iPad mail

Is it possible to create mail folders in iPad mail, or is there an app that let's you organize mail into folders

It depends on what email provider your using to make a new folder. For example I use gmail and coustum folders in gmail are called labels. Don't ask me why they are called labels... You can add a folder from the iPad and here is how to do it with gmail.
Open a new browser window in Safari...
Type in google.com in the URL address bar...
Click on Gmail in the menu...
Type in your user name and password...
When Gmail loads, look at the bottom of the page and click on basic HTML...
You can add folder (labels) in two places. From the settings (top right), label tab. Or from the  left hand column, labels, edit labels...
Add the a new label with a name...
You can add as many folders (labels) to you liking.
Click on the email icon app. If the new folder doesn't show up hit the home button and click on the email app again, the new folder should show up.
Once you have done this a few times you'll get a good workflow.
I'm sure you can do this with other email providers that let's you access your email by way of a bowser page.

  • Unable to Drag & Drop email into Smart Mail Folders

With Tiger, one could create "Mail Folders" and Drag & Drop emails into them. How is this possible with Leopard? I create the Folders and Sub-sets of Folders but I cannot archive my emails by dragging and Dropping. Anyone have a solution?
    Thanks
    charlie

The title of your question mentions "Smart Mail" folders.
The text of the question mentions "Mail Folders".
Drag and drop only works with the regular "Mail Folders". If you try to drag a message into a Smart Mailbox it will refuse to go there because the message doesn't qualify.
"Smart Mail Folders" are supposed to be set up to automatically alias an email in your inbox that has specific qualities, like, The sender is a member of a group in your addressbook, the subject contains a certain word, or other trigger (That's what makes them smart).
Depending on what you are trying to do, you may do better with creating regular "Mail Folders" so that you can manually sort important emails as you wish without having to build the Smart rule.

  • Creating new folders in Mail

    Greetings..
How does one create new folders under the inbox for organizing purposes? I was expecting to be able to create a "new folder" within any other folder, but all I can find is smart folders, and some other strange option which results in this new folder under the heading "On My Mac"...strange...what's this "On My Mac" all about? Why can't I just create a new folder under my inbox, and organize the way I see fit? This is really odd..

You can accomplish this by creating a new mailbox ( *plus sign* in the bottom left corner of the main window). I think this should say folder, but I didn't make this choice. It acts like a folder. Just click and drag emails from your inbox to these other mailboxes you created. The "On My Mac" just refers to where the emails get stored (/Users/yourshortname/Library/Mail)
    D.
Edit: the funny thing is the icon for the new mailboxes is a folder, go figure.

  • I have an edit button in my e mail account but when I press it I don't get the ''get new mailbox' button. How can I create e mail folders? Thanks.

I want to create e mail folders for my goole account. I go to the account and as suggested in the forum i tap on edit. Then instead of getting at the botton a button that says 'new mailbox' i get 2 boxes one red that says delete and one blue that says move. This is on an ipad 2. I have also an ipad 3 and there it does work. I have checked the settings in both ipads and they seem identical to me.
How can I create the foldesr then on teh ipad 2?
    Thanks a lot!

You need to be in the mailbox list for the account when you tap edit.
Sounds like you might be trying to do it from insider you Inbox.

  • HT201320 Does my email service provider have to provide the ability for me to create an IMAP email account in order for me to create Sub-folders within Apple Mail?

Hi, Apple Mail provides a function to create sub-folders within my mailbox so that I can group emails of similar subjects or from the same sender. My service provider only provides POP email protocol and the New Folder button does not appear in my Apple Mail account for that service provider. Icloud provides the opportunity for the iPad user to select between POP and IMAP. I can select IMAP and the New Folder button appears allowing me to create sub-folders within the icloud email account. Does this mean I cannot create sub-folders in my email account unless my service provider provides customers with the option of creating an IMAP email account?
This appears to be a problem for quite a few Apple Mail users, but service providers appear reticent to provide a response other than 'use Microsoft Exchange / Hotmail, Google GMail, or some other third party email service provider'. This is why I have chosen icloud as my email service provider. It is Apple and therefore Apple supports it. I have been a Telstra customer for over 15 years and they informed me today, strongly, that they support their own products and services, not Apple products, even though Telstra sell them. When I asked the Telstra Customer Support Manager whether they support Telstra customers, I was informed 'no, because the Telstra customer is not a Telstra product or service'. I have since cancelled my Telstra email account and am in the process of cancelling all of my Telstra services.

Yes. That is what it means. You need an IMAP account in order to create sub folders on the iPad.

  • How do I create new folders in my mail?

How do I create new folders to divide and save my mail into catergories?

    Hi Tina
    Two ways to do this:
1 in Mail, go the tool bar at the top of the screen, select Mailbox, then select New Mailbox in the menu.
2 in Mail, go the lefthand column, and at the bottom left you should see a plus sign and a cogwheel icon. Click on the plus sign and a new, untitled, mailbox will appear in the column above. Name this as you like.
You can "nest" mailboxes inside other mailboxes (eg inside a box I called "personal" I have individual mailboxes for each of my family and friends).
Then simply drag messages from your inbox to the appropriate mailbox in the lefthand column when you want to archive them.
    Hope this helps!

  • HT201320 Can I create a new folder in my mail folders i.e. new folder called "Work"?

I want to create a folder within my mail folders that are already there.  Can I create a folder and give it a name like "work" so I can move related messages to that folder?

Assuming you are using an IMAP or Exchange account (not POP): Open the Mail box list to the account in question, tap Edit (upper right of list), then NewMailbox (lower right of list)
