Creating manga comic book black background (help)

hi all. new user here.
i have to create a 24 x 36 inch posterboard and i want to put /images/ "in" /cells/ like in a manga comic book. basically i want to have variously sized and variously proportioned WHITE AREAS (with a slightly rounded corners, not square) and then the area between these cells (for instance 1/8" spacing) to be all black.
then I would place images /behind/ the white rounded cells.
does that make sense? I have had success doing a normal board on an all white background (with some help) while using the demo of InDesign and I am wondering if anyone can help me get started with a description of how I might do this and some Adobe InDesign terminilogy that goes along with this so I can read up about the commands in the Help documentation.
thanks in advance for any help with this.

Your background is going to be an "unassigned" frame (drawn with the rectangle tool -- the one without the X in it). Do you understand bleed? As far as the fill color, that would depend on how this is going to be printed, and if there is other color on the page. It will look better as a "rich black" which is a four-color mix, but you pay more for four-color prints than just black and white. If you are using a rich black, the exact formula can vary widly depending on the printing method (and I would ask the printer for a recommendation), but a pretty "safe" mix would be 50c, 40m, 40y, 80k. You will want to put this on its own layer at the bottom of the stack and lock the layer to avoid inadvertently using the frame to hold something (see below). you can create this first, then make a new layer on top, or do it last and drag it to the bottom of the stack.
Your image frames are drawn with the frame tool (the one WITH the X) . You could create an Object Style for them that includes the corner effect to save time. Frames drawn with the frame tool do not respect stroke and fill settings, but one of the nice things about ID is that your unassigned frames can be used to hold text or graphics, so you can also add a fill color to the object style and use the Shape tool (the same one you use for the background) instead of the frame tool if you find you need the white fill. And yes, you can copy and paste these smaller frames, or add them to a library, or save some sizes as snippets in a folder to drag into your poster. You can save a "blank" poster (just the background and the empty "cells" as a template and use the same layout for as many posters as you like, too.
You will Place the images into the cells, unless you need to combine text and image (not already combined in the image) in the cell. For that you would place the image someplace convenient, like the pasteboard, and add text in a text frame or a text frame you've drawn to look like a speech baloon, then position the two as you want them relative to each other, select both, group, cut, select the cell frame, and "paste into."

I also recommend you buy a copy of Sandee Cohen's Visual QuickStart Guide to InDesign since you seem to be a real beginner.

  • What is the simplest way to create a text on black background?

I am new to In Design and want to make a simple design that is a yellow text with a black background. What is the easiest way to do that? I am on a PC running In Design CS4. This is on a computer at work so it may take awhile for me to get back to anybody who answers. Thanks in advance

If you are a novice then iweb is a good place to start. It will allow you to create a site quickly with the minimum amount of work. You can then learn more as you go along if you want to. To publish you will need web space somewhere. Thats how I started and now I am studying web design with the Open University and am learning xhtml and CSS, then progressing to Java etc. Good luck and have fun - it is quite addictive once you start.

  • Best way to create a comic book ebook

I've been assigned the chore of creating ebooks for my company's line of comic books. Many of the comic books have spreads that get chopped in half in single page PDFs, and if you view them as "two page continuous cover" mode the spreads still get split up... so, what's the reccomended way to create an ebook where the spreads need to be preserved? Put a blank page at the beginning? Run the spreads out as "spreads" and the rest of the pages as single pages? Any tips by a professional ebook maker would be appreciated!

Creating the form itself is really only half the job.
You can have a marvelous form created using html and DW's built in form items. Those items can be in a table, or not, that part is up to you. The next step is making the form "do something".
The simplest way to make a form work, is a mailto: link in the form action attribute, but it's the absolute worst way to go. Mailto: links require the viewer to have an email client installed and set up on the computer they're using to submit your form. If they don't (as in the case of Gmail, htomail, yahoo, etc mail users) when they click Submit, absolutely nothing will happen.
Another drawback of using a mailto: link for your form submission is that email address is now open to every spam email harvester on the internet. If you like certain "blue pill emails" then there wouldn't be an issue, but if you are like the majority of society, you won't be sending funds to any Nigerian doctors either and won't want to be spammed constantly.
Personally, I use the Formmail script, available for free at http://www.tectite.com for pretty much all of my html forms. As long as your server has PHP installed (most do) the Formmail script will work very well for you. They have a ton of "How To" info on their site and the script itself is very robust with loads of features you can use, or not, at your discretion. They also have a very well documented troubleshooting section and a searchable forum that take care of the most common issues you run into.
Your next step is "find out what server scripting language you have available on your server". From there, you'll need to find/write a compatible script, then attach your form to it.

  • How do you create transparent text with black background in LiveType for use in Final Cut??

I would like to bring in movies or projects from LT that have transparent text ("alpha" layer?) and a solid background. The goal is to layer fcp video under the animated text generated in LT so that the video layer fills the transparent text layer. I know you can matte to movie or image in LT, but would prefer to do this in FCP. Long story short, need a text transparency from LT. Thanks!

    Video track 1: Your background.
Video track 2: White text on a black background.
Video track 3: The fill image for the letters.
Right click on the clip on track 3. From the drop down menu, choose Composite Mode > Travel Matte Luma.

  • EPub comic book possible?

    Hi guys,
I've been experimenting with Pages' ePub powers and wonder if there is a way to create a comic book, using my artwork. Thanks for any help.

Red Giant's Toon-It is what should do it but it's not compatible with CS5.  I know it says there is an update coming 'Summer Time' but that's been there for months and now summer is over!!!  I assume it's not going to be available unless you use CS4.  Shame - they make such good stuff.
Just noticed they have a good new denoiser.

  • IPhoto freezes when I try to create a photo book

    iPhoto 9.5.1, MacOS X 10.9.5
I create photo bokks with iPhoto since 2006 and never had a problem with that. The last book I created was just 2 months ago.
Now I tried to create another photo book with appr. 300 photos, but whenever I click "New Book" iPhoto will show the beachball for 10 or more minutes. When I quit iPhoto and restart it, it will ask to repair the mediathek because that is corrupted. However, even after the repair I cannot create a new book!
    Please help!

As a test launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new, test library.  Import some photos and test to see if the same problem persists when trying to create a new book. Does it?
NOTE:  FWIW I prefer to create a new library for each book I make because that way I can isolate it from the day to day usage that my main library gets.  It helps isolate it from accidental deleting of photos already in the book in case I want to order another copy at a later date.  The library is small enough that it can be "archived" to a CD or DVD disk. I use the paid version of   iPhoto Library Manager to transfer the photos I want in the book from my main library to the book library.
You will still need to determine what is wrong with your main library.

  • When I create an album and then try to watch it in slideshow, I get only a black screen with a white title.  No photos come up.  Also when I click on an individual photo in the album, I get a white exclamation point on a black background but no big photo.

When I create an album of photos and then open the album and try to watch it by selecting "slideshow" I get only a black screen.  The white title comes up briefly but then no photos, only a black screen.  Also when I go back to the album and click on a thumbnail, up comes a big white exclamation point on a black background instead of the enlarged photo.  Any idea what's going on?

The ! turns up when iPhoto loses the connection between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the file it represents.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

  • Please Help Exporting PDF Portfolio and Black Background turns White

I am creating a PDF Portfolio in Adobe InDesign and I created a black background using the steps below. When I export the document into PDF form, the background turns to white.
I followed these steps to make my background black:
"Window>Color>Swatches to bring up the Swatches panel and double-click the Paper swatch. Change the Color Mode to RGB and move the Red, Green, and Blue sliders to 0 to change the swatch to Black. Click OK."
Any help with this matter would be greatly appreciated.

You misunderstand what paper is for. Paper is quite simply the absense of ink or color.
By changing it, all you've done is show what something will look like printed on black paper. If you really want a black background you'll need to draw a frame, fill it with black and place it on the master page on it's own bottom layer. Lock the layer to prevent any problems.

  • In Indesign 3--I created an Elliptical Circle on a black background. I want the circle to be "THICK WHITE" Circumference.

In Indesign 3--I created an Elliptical Circle on a black background. I want the circle to be "THICK WHITE" Circumference. I can only make the circle either solid black or solid white. I want the circle to be solid black with the circumference of the circle in "THICK WHITE".
I'm a beginner in this. Somebody gave me a suggestion: "Select the object and make sure the Stroke panel is open (Window>Stroke). Select the size and make it Paper color."
I went and selected the object as suggested. I then opened the "stroke panel". I could not see any size to select and could not see where to change to paper color. When I change to paper color, the whole circle became white. The only things I see in the stroke panel are as follows: I saw "weight" "Miter limit","cap", "join", "type", "start" "end", "gap Color", "gap tint" and played with all of them and I could not make the circumference "THICK WHITE".
I'm posting this as a question in the hope somebody can give me a clearer answer. The above response to me ( "Select the object and make sure the Stroke panel is open (Window>Stroke). Select the size and make it Paper color.") was short and sweet but it did not help me. Thank you.

See your other thread where I explained the color proxies...
The size of a stroke is correctly termed "weight" and there's a filed for that with a dropdown in the stroke palette, or you can type your own number in.

I created a photo book in Photoshop elements 11 that contains png files with the invisible backgrounds.  When I export the book to a jpg or a pdf, the png files appear with white backgrounds.  Any suggestions on how to fix this?

jpg and pdf formats don't support transparency. You need to use a format such as tif, png or psd that does.

  • Web Comic Book help

    Hello
Can anyone suggest a good way to put up a web comic? Is there a program or plugin that can navigate the Previous / Next buttons? Or do I need to create this on my own in iWeb? I have played around with the slideshow option, but the image size too small.
I need a simple way of doing this. I can draw, write, etc, but ask me about HTML I am clueless.
Any help here would be great.
    Thank you.

I can think of two possible ways you could add your comic book(s) to iWeb.
1 - use Issuu.com. An example of an online document can be seen here.
2 - a similar effect can be had using the PageFlip flash presentation (sort of like Issuu) as shown in this demo page: PageFlip.
I think Issuu would be easier to use although I've not used it. Roddy as an example of a PDF thru Issuu this this page of his iWeb for Musicians site: Publish a Promo PDF on ISSUU. Music optional of course.
Or you can put one comic page on an iWeb page and create your own text based hyperlinks to the next or previous page.
In case you might be interested in some flash types of presentations:

    Hi,
I have a simple Earth globe image with a black stars background. I'd like to cut out the black background and get this all white....basically id like just the globe visible with no background.

I know this is newbie question, but i have no idea how to do it. Please don't tell me i have to get photoshop???
    Thanx!

    Dave:
Terence isn't the jerk in this thread. He's was just attempting to give you a solution you can run yourself instead of having it given to you.
GraphicConverter can create a transparent file, a gif. Try the following workflow:
1 - first convert the file to a gif (use 89a) and save and reopen.
2 -select the Magic Pen and set it's sensitivity to about 40 (double click on it will bring up the setting pane).
3 - click on the black background to select all of the black.
4 - select to the Edit->Make Selection Transparent menu option.
    5 - save the file.
The black will turn to a checkerboard pattern indicating transparency. If you anticipate a lot of advance editing I suggest you look at Photoshop Elements. I find it much more powerful than GC and it supports layers which is a very powerful too. Here's an example of some of the advanced editing you can do with it.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Creating black backgrounds

Hi.....Could anybody please tell me the best way of creating a black background to a portrait whilst still being able to keep fine strands of hair visible in the portrait so as to keep the portrait looking natural. I know how to use the polygonal tool and the paintbrush to do this where the subject matter has clearly defined edges but in the case of free flowing hair in the subject I find it to be nigh on impossible.
Any help would be greatly appreciated

  • HELP NEEDED with flash interactive comic book

    Hi folks
    I am really stuck here.
I am creating an interactive comic book for college. I want a menu, which will house all four issues of the comic series. When you click and drag an issue to the drag area I want that issue of the comic to appear. Then all I need is a button to turn the pages. Pressing the final turn page button will return to the main menu again. If someone can help me Id appreciate it as this thing needs to be in for monday/tuesday.

At this stage I've only been able to make the issue snap to the read me button but I have no idea how to make sure that action leads to the first page of that comic issue.

  • How can I create a black background around a closeup of a flower?

I want to have some of my close-up pics of flowers on a black background. Is there a way to do this with aperture? I use aperture on both my iMac and Macbook Pro.
    Thanks for any help.

One way is to use Select>Color Range
Make a new Color Fill Layer>White
    (Layer>New Fill Layer>Solid Color)
Put a new color fill layer below>black
Just invert the layer mask on the top fill layer for the opposite effect.
