Creating Master Image w/MacBook Media

I have imaged computers many times in the past using Bombich's solution and now DeployStudio. Everything seems to work great. The question I have is about creating the master image. I recently had to use the media that came with our Mid 2010 MacBooks because our generic OS X 10.6 install DVDs that we received as part of AELP (an Apple education update program) will not install on the the Mid 2010 MacBooks. The hardware came out later than the generic AELP install media. This image seems to be working perfectly fine when deployed to same model MacBooks as well as previous years' MacBooks. I haven't tried it on our older Intel iMacs yet, but I will be testing that out as well. Anyway, a friend of mine insists that there likely will be some minor driver issues and even some possible networking problems when not using generic install media to create the master image (as opposed to the media that ships with a particular model). Can someone here clarify for me if this is true. Like I said, I am not having any problems with the testing I have done already. BTW... I think the Mid 2010 MacBook media includes OS X 10.6.3. Thanks in advance for any feedback anyone has to offer!

The install DVD that came with the Mid 2010 MacBooks, I believe, explicitly states that it contains 10.6.3. That is the same as the current retail copy. I know I can't install the OS contained on that DVD directly on previous models, because there is a hardware check. I am asking about using that MacBook to create a master image for mass deployment purposes (we have the licensing agreement with Apple to always update all our computers with the latest OS). Of course I also apply the latest Software Updates. I have not seen any documentation from Apple stating that the scenario I described will not work. Does anyone know where I can find this information directly from Apple. btw... I have a message into our Apple Account Executive, and he will likely put me in touch with an Apple Systems Engineer... I will update this thread if I find any information worthy to post.)
And, yes, I did know that it is not a good idea to try to install an earlier version of an OS on newer hardware. The install media should not even work, but it could be imaged with an earlier version of the OS. I would expect lots of problems when trying to do this.
And thanks, pandzorz, for the reply!

  • Creating Master Image Best Practices

    Greetings!
Soon, I will be sending a master disk to a fulfillment company for mass replication.
I have already sold about 350 copies of my DVD (produced with Encore), which I burn on my computer (Alienware, Windows 7), and then package and ship to my customers.
    I
I've had one guys who said it "skipped really bad", I've had a couple customers who get an "invalid or unknown file" error when they tried to play it on a DVD player, and one guy who couldn't play on a computer because of a "missing DVD decoder".
4 or 5 errors out of 350 isn't bad, but I'm wondering if there's anything I need to know, in order to make my NTSC DVD as universally viewable as possible?
I know not to exceed an 8mb/s bitrate, but other than that, is there anything I should know or do?
    Thank you!
    Pat

I did indeed use Taiyo-Yudens. Since I bought 500 blanks, I got a good price on solid media.
I'm mostly wondering if there's a software 'best practice' I need to follow, since my fulfillment center will be handling most of the heavy lifting with the hardware and media.
    Thanks, video pros..!

  • How do I create an image of our standard MacBook build?

    Hi,
I've been set the job of creating a standard image for all our companies MacBooks. We currently have a build process, but this takes several hours for each MacBook and isn't very convienient.
What I would like to do is install all the required software, configure all the settings, then take an image that we can deploy to all subsequent MacBooks.
I know this is a pretty simple procedure for a Windows machine, but from my research, unless I'm missing something blindingly obvious, it doesn't seem to quite as simple on Macs.
All our MacBooks currently run on Mountain Lion 10.8.5, we are unable to upgrade to Mavericks at the moment due to some support issues with disk encryption software.
I am currently using a MacMini with Server installed 10.8.5.
Can someone please offer me some advice?
    Cheers
    Dunk

If you perceive the Windows procedure to be easy, then the Mac process will be a slice of cake and a bowl or cherries.  Cloning OS X is incredibly easy.  There are some gotchas when new hardware is released, but in general, it is cake.  There are many ways to do this.
The easiest, is a disk image clone.  You have already figure out the steps.  Build a machine exactly the way you want it.  But don't personalize it in any way.  Don't bind it to the domain.  Don't create user accounts (other than admin), and remember to change the machine name to something the you will remember to change.  I tend to use CHANGEME.  Once you have the master image, the steps are basically:
1:  Boot the master machine to its recovery partition or into target disk mode.
2:  Use Disk Utility to create a disk image of the entire drive.  Compressed with no encryption is usually effective.
3:  Save this to a drive other than the master drive.
4:  When the capture is complete, go to the images menu in Disk Utility and run Scan Image for Restore on the disk image you've just created.
5:  When done, use that disk image and the Restore tab of Disk Utility to restore back to other machines.  Once again, boot to the other machines recovery partition or build yourself a boot service drive.
Now, beyond this, you can get into NetRestore (requires and OS X Server), or tools like JAMF.  You need more than 50 Macs for this to be cost effective.
Imaging Macs is cake.  New SSD based units can be cloned in less than 10 minutes.

  • Trying to reinstall CS5.5 Master Collection from DVD media on Windows 7 64 bit - setup.exe fails due to msxml3.dll error PDApp message [FATAL] PIM - Failed to Create XML instance : DOMDocument40 ADXML::initWithXMLPath Error:80040154

If anyone is able to solve this they are a genius (or I am doing something very stupid!)
I am trying to reinstall CS5.5 Master Collection from DVD media on Windows 7 64 bit PC but setup.exe fails due to a msxml3.dll error.
Following a big bundle of recent Windows 7 updates, I started getting 'bad image' msxml3.dll error messages when opening any CS5.5 master collection program (Eg Premiere / Photoshop / Illustrator / Dreamweaver). Following advice on some threads here I tried uninstalling and then using the Adobe CC Cleaner Tool to clean up install, then reinstalling from my original DVD media.
Whenever I try using run setup.exe from installtion disc 1 the installing fails due to 'Missing files'. I have also tried dowloading trial versions and runing setup.exe fro mthe downloaded files but i still get the same message.
I have searched the forum and others have experienced this error but none of the solutions I have found seem to be working for me - as many seem to relate to download installations whereas I am installing from original DVD media (which worked fine before on the same PC)
These are the FATAL messages from the PDApp log
    12/11/2014 15:29:27 [FATAL] PIM - Failed to Create XML instance : DOMDocument40 ADXML::initWithXMLPath Error:80040154
12/11/2014 15:29:27 [FATAL] Setup - Could not initialize ADXML object
12/11/2014 15:29:27 [FATAL] Setup - Unable to initialize. Error parsing setup.xml file
The PDApp troubleshooting seems to indicate that this is caused by error in downloads but I am getting it with both original media DVD and downloads.
I have also tried using my logon (which has admin privileges) and under our main admin account - and I get the same errors.
Is a clean install of Windows 7 + CS5.5 my only option?
Any help / info / advice / solutions very much appreciated! I have spent the last 2 days trying to sort this out and seem to be getting nowhere.
    Thanks.

Thanks for the reply kglad - much appreciated.
I have already tried that option (along with downloading files) as it was one of the solutions mentioned on other threads, but that also failed.
    Any other ideas?

  • Creating Windows 8.1 master image with MDT 2013,cannot capture .WIM

I am having an issue with creating a master image with Windows 8.1 and MDT 2013.
I have followed extensive tutorials on how to create a master image using Microsoft Deployment Toolkit. my goal is to have a fully configured windows 8.1 image which I can deploy through Windows Deployment Services. I have been relatively successful thus far,
except for one issue I have run into, which is successfully capturing this image as a .WIM.
I have successfully created a task sequence and the task sequence is able to run all the way through until the final step. Essentially the task sequence is supposed to install Windows and Office, then suspend the task sequence to allow me to make customisations
to the start screen and desktop background, and I simply click resume task sequence, and the task sequence should sysprep reboot and capture the machine image as a .WIM file.
the task sequence is able to sysprep the machine, but upon rebooting it boots into out of box experience, and does not create a wim file. I receive an error saying: "cannot find script file C:\ltibootstrap.Vbs" after the machine completes OOBE
I am using Windows Server 2012 r2, creating my Master machine image using hyper-v, and my master image is running Windows 8.1.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm not sure about the sequence of steps here. Try taking your captured.wim file and deploying it using MDT again, or at least to another machine. MDT sometimes leaves extra files around on the captured machine, so simply rebooting it may not get a accurate
    test results.
IF you are getting the ltibootstrap.vbs it is most likely because there is a stray unattend.xml file somewhere in your image that is looking for this file. Crack open your Wim file and search for any unattend.xml files.

  • Flarcreate: How to create a master image?

    Hello!
I want to create a flash archive of a master system which should be used
to install a number of clone systems. Also I want to create differential
    archives to update the clones.
But after creating the first archive and installing it on a clone, I do
not know how to go on. In the documentation they talk about a "master
image" but do not explain what this is or how to create it. It seems
that "archive" and "image" are not equivalent.
The documentation I used was http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/819-6398
Can anyone tell me how to create a differential archive now?

The Solaris Flash installation feature provides following new enhancements:
A Solaris Flash installation can now update a clone system with minor changes. If you have a clone system and want to update it with minor changes, you can create a differential archive that contains only the differences between two images, the original master image and an updated master image. When you update a clone system with a differential archive, only the files that are specified in the differential archive are changed. Use the custom JumpStart? installation method to install a differential archive on a clone system, or you can use Solaris Live Upgrade to install a differential archive on a duplicate boot environment.
Special scripts can now be run for configuration of the master of clone or can be run to validate the archive.Hope the first paragraph gives you the answer.

    Windows itself.
There really are "?" (Help} icons and the backup feature will even remind you to create a system restore image the first time.
(I still think a reference manual for $25 makes sense too, or at least learn to use Google.)
Was asked and answered - quite well - a couple times yesterday, that would avoid and save a lot of wear and tear.

  • I want to create an image gallery with forward back nav, master image with a click to pop out zoom

    Hi Musers,
I'm currently building a photography website and need some help building a specific type of gallery.
    xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Below is a description of the gallery I want to build:
On the gallery page the gallery appears as a single 'Master Image' with forward and back 'Navs.' and a 'Counter' underneath this single 'Master Image'. Lets say that there are 10 images in this gallery. When the viewer clicks on the forward 'Nav.' the 'Master Image' changes to the next image in the sequence of 10 and the 'Counter' below confirms this progression, in this example the 'Counter' changes from 1 of 10 to read 2 of 10, the 'Master Image' displayed is the second image in the sequence.
Simple so far.. This above I can do as this is just a basic gallery. What follows is what I cannot find a solution for.
I want the gallery viewer to be able to click on the 'Master Image' and launch an enlargement of that image overlaying the gallery page, very much like the way the 'Lightbox' widget displays an enlarged image. When the viewer clicks off the 'Ligtbox' or enlarged image it dissapears, reverting the page view back to the standard gallery view with 'Master Image', 'Navs.' and 'Counter'. I do not want the expanded / Enlarged 'Lightbox' image accompanied by a thumbnail gallery, 'Navs.' / Navigation arrows or a 'Counter'. What I want is to be able to launch an enlarged version of the 'Master Image' as an overlay on the gallery page, something like a pop out.
    xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Can anyone explain how I can do this? Is it possible?
The solution I want seems to be a highbrid between the standard gallery with navigation arrows kept but minus thumbnails and captions with some of the functionality of the lightbox gallery widget.
I very much appreciate any help anyone can give.
    Thank you

    Hi Harriet,
Thanks for the message. I'm sure as time goes on new features will be introduced but it's a bit of a shame that the widget library is a little basic, oh, and at times it's just that little bit buggy. So far I'm really impressed by Muse despite being ever so slightly disappointed by some of it's limitations. I'd like to see more image gallery options, the ability to set up a client login area or a client ftp within a site, I also tried embedding video but as I'm no programmer the result looked clumsy so some focus on this would be a help. Considering that a good number of people benefiting from a Muse site will be online retailers a zoom function should have been there from the start.
    Best regards
    Jacques

  • How can I create system image of Win-7 only on drive with Win-7 (NTFS) and Win-ME (FAT-32) system partitions

I am trying to create a Windows 7 Image Backup on my Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit PC.
I have two bootable partitions on my hard drive. One is NTFS and contains the Win-7 system files.
The other is FAT-32 and contains a Windows-ME system.
When it comes to selecting the drives (partitions) for backing up, both are marked as System, and both are selected. Both are also "greyed out) - I cannot uncheck them.
Furthermore, the Windows-7 imaging utility supplied with Windows-7 returns an error saying it cannot image the disk because it contains a partition that is not NTFS.
How can I select and image ONLY the NTFS partition that contains the Win-7 system? That is what I want to do.

Any of the products listed below will backup the contents (all partitions) of your disk drive. The only limitation is that you must install the backup software in Windows 7. You will perform a "Disk and Partition" backup by manually selecting
the disk and all partitions (NTFS / FAT32) and the Master boot Record (MBR) on the drive. The destination / where the Image Backup will be stored should be an external USB drive. With a "Disk and Partition" backup you can restore any partition
to your existing drive or the entire backup (to the same disk drive or a new drive).

  • Loss of Master Images

I've been loosing my master images from Aperature. Almost like a virus has hit it. Anyone have any ideas what would make this happen?

Thanks for your replies. Here's some more information.
The error meaage I get when trying to edit, email, or export images is that Aperature cannot find the master image or the master is offline. This happens whether I am working with a version I created through editing or whether I am trying to work with the original image itself.
The problem seems to grow each time I open and use Aperature. For example I was working with an image from a 10k race my wife and I did at halloween. I was able to access the mast and edit and save the new version last evening. Later when I went back to it to email I got the error message. Likewise two projects from just last weekend, which were fine until yesterday started giving me the same message.
I can literally scroll through my projects and watch the little warning icon (yellow triangle)appear in the browser window.
I'm using the Nik Complete collection with Aperature. I also have a trial version of Photoshop installed but its expired and I don't use it. My aperature library is on an external drive since my MacBook doesn't have enough storage.

I do not know what that error means. However, if you open up the Disk Utility & go into it's Help Menu & in the search field type duplicating a CD or DVD. There you will find detailed instructions on how to create a disc image from a DVD.
Good possibility your answer may be found there and/or there may have been something you missed in creating a disc image.

  • How can I edit lightroom 5 smart previews on mac book pro (mbp) when the lightroom 5 master image files are on my external hard drive is disconnected from the mbp

How can I edit lightroom 5 smart previews on mac book pro (mbp) when the lightroom 5 master image files are on my external hard drive is disconnected from the mbp? So far when I try to disconnect the external HD from the mbp, I get the following pop up window: The disk "external hard drive A" couldn't be ejected because "Lightroom" is using it. Quit that application and try to eject this disk again. When I do that and restart Lightroom 5, the Adobe Photoshop Lightroom - Select Catalog screen pops up but doesn't list my external hard drive A as a choice.
I've reviewed Adobe's Lightroom Help | Smart Previews Lightroom 5 web page and still haven't been able to figure what I'm doing wrong. Any help would be appreciated.

Your internal HDD. by default, is named 'Macintosh HD'. From what information you supplied, it looks like there is already a Lightroom catalog installed on you local (internal) HDD using the standard naming convention Adobe uses as well as a Lightroom catalog on your external drive which you created. To be sure of which catalog Lightroom is loading when it starts up, To do this, start Lightroom as you normally would. After it starts, select the Lightroom menu item, then select the Catalog Preferences item and finally, navigate to the General tab. The Location information will tell you exactly what catalog Lightroom is opening by default. This will likely be the Photography Mac Book Pro Versions catalog on your external HDD. Once that is confirmed, you are ready to proceed. As an additional test/verification, you can shut down Lightroom and, this time, start Lightroom while holding down the ALT/OPTION key. This will cause Lightroom to pause and display a screen which will allow you to chose a different catalog to open. Navigate to the /Users/[user name]/Pictures/Lightroom folder and select the Lightroom 5 Catalog.lrcat file. When Lightroom comes up, there should be no previews or folders as this catalog should be empty. Now you can be certain which catalog is being used and which catalog has all your data and you are ready to migrate your current catalog. Shut down Lightroom.
To migrate your current catalog, use Finder to locate your Photography Mac Book Pro Versions folder on your external drive. Select the folder and select COPY from the context menu. Next, use Finder to navigate to the /Users/[user name]/Pictures/Lightroom folder on you internal HDD. You can start at the Macintosh HD level and work your way down by opening each level (Macintosh HD/Users/[user name]/Pictures). Select the /Pictures folder and then select PASTE... from the context menu. When the COPY/PASTE is complete, you should see the following files on the Macintosh HD:
    Macintosh HD/Users/[user name]/Pictures/Lightroom/ and
Macintosh HD/Users/[user name]/Pictures/Photography Mac Book Pro Versions
The Macintosh HD/Users/[user name]/Pictures/Lightroom folder will contain the empty default catalog the Adobe created when Lightroom was installed and Macintosh HD/Users/[user name]/Pictures/Photography Mac Book Pro Versions will contain a copy of the catalog you created on your external HDD.
You are almost done now. Make sure your external drive is still attached for this step. Restart Lightroom using the ALT/OPTION key again. When the Select Catalog screen appears, select the Choose a Different Catalog button (lower left side). When you do, a Finder window will open to allow you to navigate to a catalog of your choosing. Navigate to Macintosh HD/Users/[user name]/Pictures/Photography Mac Book Pro Versions and select the file Photography Mac Book Pro Version.lrcat. This is the copy you just created. Select the Open button and Lightroom should start. You should see all of your previews and settings just as before. Also, in the left hand panel, all of your folder should show up and none of them should be dimmed and none of your previews should display a small exclamation point badge. Either a dimmed folder name or an exclamation point badge indicates that Lightroom can't find the associated image file. If everything looks good, go to the Lightroom menu, select Preferences and then select the General tab. Under Default Catalog, select an option to either load the LAST catalog opened or select the Users/[user name]/Pictures/Photography Mac Book Pro Versions catalog from the drop down. Shut down Lightroom and then restart it normally. This time, when Lightroom starts, you should be viewing the new copy of your catalog. You can confirm this by looking at the General tab on the Catalog Preferences screen (Lightroom/Catalog Preferences menu items). Shut down Lightroom once again and this time, eject your external drive before restarting. This time, your folders in the left hand panel will be dimmed but you should be able to work with your smart previews. If Lightroom should display a Select Catalog screen with the external drive detached, double check your settings as it indicates Lightroom is still looking at the copy of the catalog on the external drive rather than the new copy you made.
Finally, if you are seeing dimmed folders and/or exclamation point badges with the external drive attached, this indicates a problem. You can select any folder and select Update Folder Location from the context menu. This will allow you to navigate to the copy on the external drive and select it. Lightroom will then update the catalog (select to synchronize the content). This will not only clear the dimmed folder problem but also remove the exclamation point badges for all photos in that missing folder. However, it may indicate that not all went well with the copy of the catalog so make sure to verify all went well. You can use the Get Info option on the two folders. You should see the same number of files/folders for both the copy on the internal drive as well as on the external drive but you can't rely on the byte count because of the possibility of differences between the geometry of the two drives. Hope this all helps!

  • Creating an image from a Mac and restoring it in another Mac

    Hi,
I've spent a couple of hours trying to make a copy of one of my macminis, trying to copy it in another macmini to have the SAME machine "duplicated".
I've read some tutorials online, but something is going wrong....
First of all, I went to my "master" macmini, DiskUtility, create new image from folder, select my macintosh HD and I created the image of the whole HD.
Almost a hour after, the image was created.
Then I moved the .dmg to a USB drive, and I connected the USB pen to the machine that I want to be a "clone" of the master. There, I opened Disk Utility, Restore, I selected the Source image from my USB, but I can't selected (=drag) the Macintosh HD into the "destination" field...
    What I'm doing wrong?
Thanks, any help is appreciated :))

    Hi sr.richie;
If you are booted from Macintosh HD then the system will not allow this cloning operation to take place. You must boot from another disk in order to do that.

  • System Image Utility fails to create boot image

I am not able to successfully build a boot image with the System Image Utility. The build starts and runs for about 1 minute and then I get 100's of ditto messages saying "No space left on device". There's plenty of space left on the device. Eventually I get a GUI message stating the there was an error creating the image. The image is of course unusable. This only happens on a Boot image. I have no problem making an install image from the same source. Is it just me??
    Xserve G5 Dual   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

I had simililar problems with much headscratching as the result.
I found that whenever I tried to create a boot image with System Image Utility (SIU) using an image file of my existing system as the source SIU would fail with the annoying "No space left on device" message everytime. I did a little investigating and found that SIU always created a 400 MB disk image file to copy to. So the error message was correct as my source was way over 4 GB.
I checked the manual and found the embarrasingly simple solution. It's not mentioned directly, rather it is stated that when you want to create an boot image from an existing system you should boot the machine containing the desired system on disk from an alternate source and the run SIU on that machine. The "trick" is that you're running SIU with the existing system mounted as a disk.
So I went back to my Xserve, mounted the image so it appeared on the desktop. Ran SIU and chose the mounted volume as the source instead of the image file, and hey presto!

    Hi Don, here's my guess...
The 901 number is additional space added in the scripts. This indicates that the source image size was 0.
Since you are making a NetBoot from Install media, under the covers the installer process is being run to create a NetBoot volume. The media shipped with the 27" iMac is most likely CPU specific and thus the installation fails because you are trying to create the image (i.e. install the system) on an unsupported CPU.
In order to produce a NetBoot from the install media, you'll have to create it on the 27" iMac.
    Hi Brian,
Thanks for the response. This makes perfect sense. I'll give this a try and shout back!
    Thanks,
    Don
