Creating multiple libraries

Right now my 30G Video iPod has my entire music library on it. I know how to create another library, but does anyone know how to move songs from the old library into the new one? I'd like to separate my personal music from the stuff I use for work without having to delete from one library and re-import into the other, yet have it all on one computer.
Thanks

I think its just a matter of creating a playlist of songs for work, then export that playlist as an .xml file. Then, open iTunes with the work library and import the .xml file.

  • How can I create multiple libraries on a windows 8 HP computer?

I just got the newest generation Ipod Touch, and the itunes is not supported on my iMac G5. My parents have a Windows 8 HP computer. My dad's itunes account is on that computer. So what I want to do is use my external hardrive to sync it to my Windows 8 computer. I am trying to find out how to create multiple libraries.
    Please help me out.

These all have drm so i cannot read them without a i-Device.
Correct.  If you do not have an iOS device or a Mac running Mavericks, do not buy Apple iBooks.  They will be unreadable.

  • Creating multiple libraries and using an external drive for data

I'm a recent switcher and new to iphoto. On the windows platform, I used adobe album. I have a around 10k of images that I put on an external drive which is attached to my new imac. I deleted the iphoto folder and redirected it to my images on my external. All is working great. I'm looking for some advise on work flow of file/iphoto management. i.e. I'm assuming the more images I accumulate, the slower I photo is going to run? I hear you can create multiple iphoto libraries. Will that only load the photos that are associated with the library and I'm assuming optimize iphoto's performance versus always loading every photo you have taken every time you work in iphoto? If adding libraries is the way to go, can someone direct me to instruction on how to do this?
This may be beyond this threads scope but I plan to put all my data (iphoto, imovies, itunes) onto an external drive in order to keep the imac main drive as clean a possible. Is my thinking correct in doing so. Any negative repercussion in doing so?

You'll have to get quite a lot of photos into iPhoto before you start to see a real slowdown in performance. Users have reported libraries of 40K files and they perform just fine. However, do not keep all of rolls open as that will really do a job on the performance. Just open the rolls you need and close them all before quitting.
Yes, you can use multiple libraries and only load what's in each. I use iPhoto Library Manager to manage and move quickly between 10 libraries. With the paid version of iPLM you can move albums and/or rolls between libraries as needed and keep the keywords, ratings, and comments intact.
Using an external HD in order to maintain sufficient free space (10G minimum is what I recommend) on the boot drive to help optimize performance is a very good idea.
As far as any negative aspects, it would be a good idea to have a second external HD as a backup to the working external HD. You can't be too careful with those image files (and other important files) that can't be replaced.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • How do I create multiple libraries & use with multiple ipods?

    Hi All,
My wife and I have different tastes in music. Currently we use different user log ons to seperate our libraries. It's a complete pain because there's no other reason to use seperate log ons.
We'll soon be upgrading to a new iMac and I'm wondering if it's possible to have two libraries operating in the one itunes sesssion?
    So here are my questions:
    1) Can I have two libraries sourcing the same music files?
    2) We each have an iPod, can it be set to only update one of those libraries, but still automatically update when connected?
    3) If we create playlists, will they be associated with only one library, or both (my preference is one, of course)?
    4) I'm pretty sure iPods can be set so my iPod only updates my playlists, and my wife's iPod only updates her playlists - is that correct?
    5) If we have seperate libraries, can we have seperate ratings? (Our opinion of what a five star song is is different)!
Of course, for the above questions, if the answer is 'yes' please let me know how to do this. I've had a look through the itunes manuals online, but they don't seem to have any information.
    Cheers, Chris

    Chris,
I have the exact same situation, and I have tried Doug's iTunes Library Manager, but it doesn't work for me. The first workaround I tried was to set up two smart playlists to group together any music that only one of us liked, which could then be checked or un-checked (control-click) depending on which iPod is being synced. This is clumsy, and if you aren't careful the Recently Added playlist will still "contaminate" your iPod.
Last night I just made a new library for my wife (hold down Option when starting iTunes), copied everything over using the Add to Library command, exported all the playlists using the Export Library command, deleted all the music and playlists she doesn't want, and synced her iPod. It took a while to erase and re-sync, but it is now synced to HER library, and she doesn't see any music she doesn't like.
Tonight I will do the same for myself. I will have, then, three libraries which can be selected by holding down the option key when starting iTunes: Mine, My wife's, and the main one with everything (called Library) All the music files stay on an external Firewire Drive. There is no way to toggle libraries from within iTunes, you have to quit and start it again holding down the option key.
Podcasts are another story, and I haven't quite figured them out yet.

  • Any ideas on how to create multiple libraries?

Is it possible for me to create another Library? I have some music on my computer and some more on an external hard drive that is not always connected. I would like to create one library for the music on my computer and another for the music on the hard drive.
Any ideas on where to find out if you don't know?

There's two ways you could do this...
There's two main files that control what is in your Library. These are located in My Documents/My Music/iTunes. One of them has an ITL extension, the other one has an XML extension. If you remove or rename these, you'll get a fresh new library. So you could swap those files out to switch libraries, sort of thing. This is kind of a pain.
The other way is to create another user account in Windows. Every user has their own iTunes Library.

  • Creating multiple libraries on ITunes

My family has 3 different iPods and we each would like our own iTunes music libraries. Is there an easy way to create separate instances of iTunes or different libraries on the same computer?

Before the crash of iTunes 5, our family's various ipods each had their own playlist (named eg. Kiddos iPOD)and each particular iPod with its own name was set to only Automatically Update Selected Playlists Only via Preferences Thus: One big Library, and several pseudo libraries that were actually playlists. This worked out perfectly UNTIL the iPod 5 attempted install and subsequent diaspora of various elements of the Library and Playlists. Hopefully I'll be able to find all this stuff when it is safe to attempt the iPod 5 update ...just waiting for Appple to fix it.

  • Why can't I create multiple libraries? Shift & Click method is not working

I am trying to create another library on my PC. However, when I try the suggested method +(from the Start menu, choose All Programs > iTunes > iTunes)+ I do not get a dialog or option to create a new library--my existing library just opens up. What might be causing this? I have Windows XP, and I'm using iTunes 7.6.

There is not a flag I know of in the app builder that will add that.  The only way I know of allowing multiple instances is to have the mentioned setting in the applications ini.
The ini should end up having at the least
    [app name]
    allowmultipleinstances=true
You should still be able to have your custom information in the ini.

  • Multiple Preferences for Multiple Libraries?

Now that I'm able to create multiple libraries with iTunes 7, I'd like to be able to have a different set of preferences for each library. That is, I'd like to have my local hard drive's library to copy files to the iTunes Music folder when I use it while refraining from copying while I use my external hard drive's library. As I understand it, preferences are user-based, so I can't figure out how to do this.
When I used Libra previous to iTunes 7, it was able to handle this. Any ideas about how to do this using iTunes 7 solely?
    Thanks

  • Multiple Libraries for iTunes

I am wondering if there is any way to create multiple libraries for my music? I use my iTunes for both work and personal music and would like to be able to move my work music into a separate library. I've seen this concept in accounting programs, where you create new companys in order to store and track separate information. Any suggestions? I am currently using iTunes 5.0

    Cherrie:
Try iTunes Library Manager. It's not free, but it does work.

  • Multiple libraries/smart playlists for different disks, or sort by location

    Hey.
My iTunes music is physically stored on my computer's local hard disk, on an external hard disk, and on a remote server from which I stream online. When my computer is disconnected from my external hard disk or from the internet, I don't want to seeing unreachable tracks in my iTunes library; I'd rather have a list of songs which are available for me to play. I'd like to create multiple libraries, one for each disk.
Or I'd like to create smart playlists which automatically fill with content from specified locations (as opposed to content added by artist, duration, last playtime, etc).
Or I'd like to be able to sort my library based on physical file location.
As far as I've searched, this isn't yet possible. Anyone know how to make this work, or know how to suggest this feature to Apple?
    Thanks.

    Hi,
Thanks for your reply. This worked but it doesnt seem to be consistent.. not sure if the fact that I have a smart playlist based on another smart playlist (only because I want 5 anded conditions + 1 or'd which is playcount=0) and hence something goes wrong?
Any better way overall to manage these?  I now have 4 pairs of these.
Also, any way to have a Smart Playlist that selects only video?  They have the Media Kind = Podcast, but no Media Type = Video..
    Many thanks,

  • Multiple libraries on 1 Mac

I have multiple devices that I want to sync from my one Mac. I decided to go for the multiple library options under my one user account.  I have created multiple libraries but the problem I'm finding is that if I buy a new book/app they get placed in finder for that device.  Is that a way of keeping this clean and keeping all apps, books etc under the one library in Finder and all the different devices just reading from there?
Not sure I've explained that well..!!!?  Thanks for any thoughts....

    Hi Chris CA,
I have, in the main, different apps, books and music on each device.  However some apps I have on iPhone and iPad. My iPhone library is my main library where I want to store all media - however if I buy an app on my iPad it will store this under the iPad folder rather than the iPhone folder, even though in preferences my media file points at the iPhone media folder
It's just messy, as if in the example above I want to put the app on my iPhone I than would want to put the new app with all my other apps and then sync it to the iPhone.

  • Multiple Libraries in iTunes.

Can someone explain me how to create multiple libraries in iTunes.
I've a huge load of 5000 songs of which 2000 is what I hear often.
I don't have album art on the other 3000 songs and don't want to clutter it with my main library.
Moreover, these 2000 songs are automatically synced with my iPhone. However, I sometimes need to move a couple of songs from the main list which I find it too tedious without a library.
Can someone teach me how to create a second library in iTunes without affecting my main library and switch seamlessly (and copy files) between the two?
    Thanks,
    Mugunth

One more thing, if you want a more efficient way to switch iTunes libraries without having to keep restarting iTunes, considering downloading free software http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/ipoditunes/multitunesdavidcaldwell.html

  • Multiple libraries, multiple instances, multiple preference sets

    Hi everyone!
I know how to create multiple libraries, but does anyone know if it is possble to access through ONE instance of iTunes the multiple libraries created? If not, is it possible to run multiple instables of iTunes?
In any case, if it possible to have different preference sets for each library?
The reason I'm asking is that I find it really great to have multiple libraries so that one can have media on different drives/locations and better manage one's media. However, it's a real pain in the *** to have to quit iTunes, hold the Option key while starting iTunes, choose a library, and play whatever one wants to play.
Syncing with an iPod, too, is a pain, because I have to manually manage the iPod.
So until, iTunes does all this by itself, does anyone know of a solution?
    Thanks.

Good thoughts, and maybe we'll get there someday. Already, Apple has made a complex business (managing a media library) impressively easy through iTunes, and it's steadily improved iTunes, too. Of course, the success that Apple has had in software ergonomics always leaves it in the position of having consumers say, "Well, if you can give us this, then why can't you give us that?"
At the same time, many--probably a large majority--of iTunes users do not discern the difference between the iTunes Library and the collection of music files the Library refers to. I'm sure Apple is concerned about confusing such users by adding the kind of complexity and power to iTunes that some of us could take advantage of. It's a tough balancing act.
(BTW, I think Apple should have chosen its iTunes terminology a little differently in order to help users more easily understand iTunes organization. Maybe the iTunes folder could have been called the iTunes Library folder, the iTunes Music Library file the iTunes Music Catalog, and the iTunes Music folder the iTunes Music Holdings folder, or something along those lines that makes for a closer analogy with a regular, physical library.)
I still think Apple could give you the feature you seem to be looking for by creating a new kind of preset...maybe call it Collections, or something like that... that would allow you to store different sets of preferences affecting Importing of new tunes--location, file format, etc. Then you could do what you want within one library.
Who knows? ...Hope you get what you want sometime soon!
