Creating Nested Aliases

Hi
I am fairly new at AppleScript. I set up quite a few macs for colleagues, and I am trying to develop a script which automates the creation of folders of aliases for the Dock. Currently I manually create a folder called Dock Aliases. Inside this I creates folders called Applications, Graphics, Network, Utilities etc. Finally, I create aliases to all the main applications, graphics programs, network stuff etc (I aim to define these within the script), and copy them to their relevant folders inside Dock Aliases. The alias name is then stripped from the aliases. For each of the folders I copy an appropriate icon from an application - eg Disk Utility's icon is a nice icon for the Utilities folder I created inside the Dock Aliases folder. Finally, I drag these folders of aliases to the dock, and when I click and hold on them, I get nice pop up menus to all the programs I want.
I routinely do this manually, but for standard configurations of Macs - which we have, this could be Applescripted quite nicely.
I've got as far as creating a folder called Dock Aliases on the desktop, but now I'm stuck trying to create the folders within it. I've tried a lot of combinations with no success. My code so far is:
tell application "Finder"
set docksfolder to make new folder at desktop with properties {name:"Dock Aliases"}
set sourcefolder to (path to desktop folder) & "Dock Aliases" & ":" as string
set appsfolder to make new folder at location sourcefolder with properties {name:"Applications"}
set appsfolder to make new folder at location sourcefolder with properties {name:"Graphics"}
-- etc for the other folders
end tell
Questions:
1. How do I create folders within my Dock Aliases folder on the desktop.
2. How do I create an alias of say Text Edit and copy it to the Applications folder I have created in my dock aliases folder
3. I'm pretty good on editing aliases out of file names
4. What about copying the icon from say Disk Utility to become the custom icon of the Utilities folder within Dock Aliases?
Thanks in advance for any advice.
Regards
Dave

Hello
The second script contained also several mistakes (misplaced try-end try pairs).
Here is a working copy.
set sourceFolderName to "Dock Aliases" -- Master folder.
set folder_List to {"Applications", "Graphics", "Network", "Utilities"} -- Sub-folders, of master folder.
tell application "Finder"
try -- Allows 'sourceFolderName' to currently exist.
set docks_folder to make new folder at desktop with properties {name:sourceFolderName}
end try
set source_Folder to (((path to desktop folder from user domain) as string) & sourceFolderName & ":")
repeat with i in folder_List -- Create sub-folders of sourceFolderName
try -- Allows 'source_Folder & i' to currently exist.
make new folder at folder source_Folder with properties {name:i}
end try
try
if (i contains "Network") then
-- Obtain only 'Internet location' files of current user's 'Favorites' folder.
set application_List to (every item of item (((path to library folder from user domain) as string) & "Favorites:") whose kind contains "Internet Location")
else
-- Obtain all applications of folder 'source_Folder & i'
set application_List to every application file of entire contents of item (((startup disk) as string) & i)
end if
on error
set application_List to {}
end try
if application_List is not {} then
repeat with j in application_List -- Cycle through list of applications.
-- Add alias of each source_Folder & i' application to respective 'sourceFoldername' sub-folder.
try
make new alias at folder (source_Folder & i) to (j as string)
end try
end repeat
end if
end repeat
end tell
From my point of view it would be better to replace every occurence of "as string" by "as Unicode text" because the Finder is now using this encoding.
For english speaking users it's not a problem but for those with languages using accented chars, it would be useful.

    Hi,
    When you say
    FROM    emp  e
    ,       emp  e1you are using two copies of the same table.
    Can you imagine using two copies of the same book at the same time?
    Say you see a word (like "hyrax") that you don't know. You might look up that word in the dictionary.
    The English sentence "Open the dictionary to the page containing the new word." is like this SQL query:
    FROM    dictionary
    WHERE   :unknown_word  BETWEEN low_guide_word and high_guide_wordWhat if you saw that word while reading a book (let's call it book_a).
    You might want to leave book_a open, and place the dictionary beside book_a, so you can easily compare how the word is used in book_a with the definition in the dictionary.
    This corresponds to joining two tables in SQL:
    FROM    book_a
    JOIN    dictionary  ON unknown_word BETWEEN low_guide_word AND high_guide_word
    WHERE   book_a.page  = whatever  -- NOTE: both tables have a column called pageor you can use aliases for one or both of the tables
    FROM    book_a      a
    JOIN    dictionary  d  ON a.unknown_word BETWEEN d.low_guide_word AND d.high_guide_word
    WHERE   a.page  = whatever  -- NOTE: both tables have a column called pageNow, imagine that book_a is itself the dictionary. Say you saw the word "hyrax" while you were looking up another word, "ibex".
    You can do a side-by-side comparison, as above, if you have two copies of the dictionary. Leave one copy open to "ibex", and open the other copy to "hyrax".
    This corresponds to a self-join in SQL:
    FROM    dictionary  a
    JOIN    dictionary  d  ON a.unknown_word BETWEEN d.low_guide_word AND d.high_guide_word
    WHERE   a.page  = whatever  -- NOTE: both tables have a column called pageNotice that this last bit of code is identical to the previous one, except that book_a is replaced with dictionary.
    In this case, you must you a table alias, at least for one copy. It wouldn't make any sense to say "Leave the dictionary open to "ibex" and open the dictionary to "hyrax". You have to have some unique way of referring to each copy, such as "Leave the dictionary on my left open to "ibex" and open the dictionary on my right to "hyrax"."

  • Create nested directory on FTP folder if they don't exist while uploading file

    How can I create nested directory on FTP folder if they don't exist. A local file is suppose to exactly uploaded in the same directory structure level in ftp folder. My question is -
     1. Is there any C# opensource/free library that take care of creation of all sub-directories from file-path, if they don't exist on ftp and upload the file in one shot.
     2. How much it will be feasible to make all these uploads along with some database update, archive, quarantine task in asynchronous? All succeeding tasks are sequentially depends in their order.i.e. ftp upload >> database update>> archive
    from local >> quarantine the folder
    This really requires parallel & asynchronous operation for heavy upload/transfer and going to be done by a Windows-Service.

    Hello,
    Your Subject:
    >Sender File adpter --don't raise alerts when file does not exist in folder
    is contradictory to your question.
    >if the file does not exist,it is throwing an alert like "Could not process file '.file..xml: No such file or directory '
    > Is there any way i can avoid raising an alert if file does not exist in the source folder.
    I know you want to say "Don't Raise alerts when file does not exist in folder". Correct me if I am wrong.
    Some times it happens, when we write the right thing but it means something else and this is the reason many experts have replied, "how to raise an alert". So if you remove the word "Sender File adapter" from your subject then it will be easy to understand the exact meaning.

  • Can I create enterprise aliases disabled by default?

    On another thread I asked How do I create and new enterprise alias?
    I was directed to the following SAP Note...
    http://service.sap.com/sap/support/notes/1804839
    I was able get things working and create enterprise aliases for all of my Windows AD users that don't already have one.  The reason I am doing this is so that when they get removed from the active directory group and subsequently BusinessObjects their corresponding inbox, personal folder and any schedules they may have created do not get removed.
    So my question is this.  Is there any way to create an enterprise alias disabled by default?  Here is the code snippet downloaded from the aforementioned note.
    I would like to add a line after user.setNewPassword (line #91) that says something like this...
    user.setEnabled(false);
    However, that isn't working.  The method setEnabled is not recogized.  I did check the documentation for IUser and cannot find any method to disable an enterprise user.  Does such a method exist?
    Thanks,
    Noel

    You can't do this directly on the IUser object - it has to be done on an IUserAlias object.  So, your code might look something like this:
    IUserAliases uAliases = user.getAliases();
    for (Object aobj : uAliases){
        IUserAlias alias = (IUserAlias) aobj;
        if (alias.getType() == IUserAlias.ENTERPRISE){
            alias.setDisabled(disable);

  • How to create Nested Group membership in OAM?

    Hello,
    I am facing a problem now about creating nested group membership in OAM. Although all documents mention that nested group membership is available in OAM and the "uniquemember" attribute's target object class covers both "inetorgperson" and "groupofUniqueNames", I still cannot find the option in Selector to add "group" members.
    Please kindly suggest.
    Thank you.

    Liu,
    You've been very helpful, so I thought that I'd try to "return the favor" :)...
    If you want to change the background color of that bar that contains the "Users Groups" to something other than dark blue, you can do it by editting the following file (this path is on Windows):
    C:\Program Files\NetPoint\identity\oblix\lang\shared\sltr_navbar.xsl
    I changed the line:
    <table width="100%" border="0" bgcolor="#006699" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0">
    TO:
    <table width="100%" border="0" bgcolor="#CCCCCC" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0">
    which, on my system, changes the bar background color from dark blue to gray.
    Obviously, you can change the color to whatever you feel is appropriate, but the gray background definitely makes the links more visible :)!!
    Here's a website that'll let you experiment with the color codes:
    http://colorcombos.com/combotester.html
    or choose a color visually:
    http://www.liu.edu/cwis/CWP/library/colors.htm
    You'll need to restart the OAM servers after making the change for it to become effective.
    Thanks for your help!

    My macbook pro has a virus/trojan that is resetting the EFI via apci and it is getting root access privileges. It seems to be creating multiple aliases that bundle with rogue apps and preferences so it is very difficult to control or fix. Please help..It all stems from the "about donwloads" PDF which kicks off the restructuring of the OS..

    Well given the fact that it is not just myself who is infected and also that this is my 3rd macbook in 1 year because the other 2 efi's were compromised to the point where they were unusable, and also that I must've been to the mac store no less than 100 times in a year for these issues, I beg to differ. Here is what I can show you. This has been ongoing for over a year now.
    I will try and show you as much as I can.
    1) Here is what I see when I run mount from terminal:
    /dev/disk0s2 on / (hfs, local, journaled)
    devfs on /dev (devfs, local, nobrowse)
    map -hosts on /net (autofs, nosuid, automounted, nobrowse)
    map auto_home on /home (autofs, automounted, nobrowse)
    localhost:/4zOta2Q9FMiMnRjTROIbhU on /Volumes/MobileBackups (mtmfs, nosuid, read-only, nobrowse)
    Why on earth is /Volumes/MobildBackups my localhost is beyond me. I don't use iCloud and Mobile me is obsolete.
    2) Here is what I show when I run ls -al /*/*/*/*.efi from root
    -rw-r--r--  1 root  wheel  994464 May  1 00:33 /System/Library/CoreServices/boot.efi
    -rw-r--r--  1 root  wheel  994464 Oct  2  2012 /usr/standalone/i386/boot.efi
    -rwxr-xr-x  1 root  wheel  115716 Dec 13 14:08 /usr/standalone/i386/tmbootpicker.efi
    As far as I know my boot.efi should not change everytime I boot my machine.
    3) Here is something very interesting. When I run cd /dev followed by ls -al look what I have;
    total 9

    How to create Nested Handling units at the time of Outbound delivery VL01n

    Hi,
    go to Edit-Pack,
    In First tab will be "Pack Material", give Packing Materials & enter. You will get a HU Number generated. select this line & the line in Material to be packed. Click on Pack button. The material is packed into a HU.
    Now go to Second tab "Pack HUs". Here also give Packing Materials & enter. You will get a HU Number generated. select this line & the line in All Handling Units that can be packed. Click on Pack button. The HU is packed into another HU.

  • Howto create nested groups???

    Hello Mac fans,
    I'm trying to place groups <domain>\schema admins, admins and admin under one group name poweradmins on the mac. I also want to manually map some users to additional groups.
    I don't have a Mac network, just a shared PowerMac and a windows AD domain.
    I'm familiar with how to do this on any unix distribution. Edit the /etc/groups file and create user mappings to a specific group, in this case poweradmins.
    Since I got my mac, I've learned the hard way a few lessons about mac's. First and foremost, the /etc/passwd and /etc/group files are there purely for the end-users's entertainment and are not even consulted during operation. I understand they are used when in runlevel 1, but that would have been a nice tidbit of information to have 4 hours ago....
    So I'm learning apple's netinfo database. I prefer CLI, but I'm trying the GUI just to cover all bases.
    The long and short is that I can't figure out how to assign users to groups manually. Once I create a group, what do I need to edit to assign a user to that group?
    Beyond that, I'm trying to nest a group under a group. I think once I learn how to manually assign users to additional groups, this functionality will become obvious.
    Yes I've read the docs. I know how to add attributes to groups and do high-level things with the netinfo db. But I'm unclear about how netinfo is parsed and what elements are mandatory. Perhaps someone reading this list has learned the in's and out's and can share?
    Thanks!!

    With respect to "NetInfo", I get the impression that things are in a bit of a state of flux - I hear rumours that things are changing in 10.5. For the moment (Tiger), as near as I can tell, users can be added to a group record by including its 'name' in the 'users' property or by 'generateduid' in the 'groupmembers' property. Nested groups can be created by adding a group's 'generateduid' to the enclosing group's 'nestedgroups' property. A command for creating nested groups is discussed here:
    http://www.afp548.com/article.php?story=20050810102912104
    "Legacy" groups (pre-Tiger, I guess, and lacking a 'generateduid' and who knows what else) can't be added to a nested group.
    I find the situation at the moment all very confusing...

  • How to create nested case when statement in OBIEE 11g?

    Hi All,
    I need to create a formula using nested case when statement. The formula to be created is below:
    =If([AWRV]<0; "<0";
    If([AWRV]=0; "0";
    If([AWRV]<=15; ">0 and <=15";
    If([AWRV]<=25; ">15 and <=25";
    If([AWRV]<=50; ">25 and <=50";

    If([AWRV]<=10000; ">5000 and <=10000"; ">10000"))))))))))))
    How to recreate using Nested case when? I tried in many different ways but it is displaying syntax error in obiee11g. This is very critical. Can anybody shed light on this issue pls?
    Thanks in advance,

  • How to create nesting in a smartlist

    This is for adding a nested condition to a smartlist in iTunes 11
    I have a smartlist that has nesting that looks like this:
    Per the help section, it states:
    To add another set of rules, hold down Option key & click the Nest button. (When you hold down the Option key, the Add button changes to the Nest button.)
    When I do this, I can only create a new nest within the larger nest that you see on the screen. For example, I press Option Key,  the Add button becomes a Nest button under Any>Plays>is less than>41. But, I want to creat a "larger" Any nesting that is not nested within the two larger nestings. Does that make sense? Any tips?

    It is a bit clumsy, isn't it. In your case, I'd start again form the begining and get your nesting structure in place first, then fill in the details.

  • How do I create track aliases in iTunes?

    I have a huge playlist consisting of over 2000 tracks and sorted in a particular way (for which I use text in the Comment field). I wish to insert 'breaks' at quite a number of different points in this playlist, for which I have created a music "jingle" followed by half a minute of silence. This is 650k in size.
    Now I do understand that a track can be added into a playlist any number of times. But unfortunately, to get it to sort into the correct places, I need to change the Comment field for each one.
    I need about 200 of these jingles. I would really much rather create aliases of it. How do I create an alias, where the track is exactly the same, but one of the tags changes?

    christopher rigby1 wrote:
    That's exactly what I was asking - I can't have a number of aliases for this track where the CONTENTS (i.e. audio) remain the same, but the TAGS can be different?
    That is exactly what I was answering. You can't.
    The comment gets written to the appropriate field of the ID3 tags, and thus will be the same if you have multiple entries for the same file. If you want to see how this works, edit the comment field in iTunes, and then look at the file in another program, such as Winamp. You will see your comment there. It is part of the file.
    If you want different comments, you need different files.

  • Creating nested folders in the resource view

    Hi,
    Does anyone know if there is a way to create a set of nested folders in the resource view in one go?
    The following works if the path /home/cosmos already exists but fails if only /home exists, i.e. it looks like the createfolder method can only create one depth of folder at a time.
    ---8<--
    declare
    result boolean;
    begin
    result := dbms_xdb.createfolder('/home/cosmos/test1');
    end
    ---8<---
    Failure message if only path '/home' exists:
    ---8<---
    ERROR at line 1:
    ORA-31001: Invalid resource handle or path name "/home/cosmos"
    ORA-06512: at "XDB.DBMS_XDB", line 195
    ORA-06512: at line 4
    ---8<---
    The problem is that the paths are being created dynamically by the application in response to details in xml messages received. We're rather hoping not to have to write the loop to test each section of the path and create it if it doesn't exist.
    Thanks,
    Marcus

    No. You would have to use Video Playlists.
