Creating NetRestore Image of OS X Yosemite (10.10) from Mac Mini Server Running Mavericks (10.9)

Hello all,
We are attempting to create a NetRestore image of a Macbook Pro running Yosemite (10.10) from a Mavericks (10.9) Mac Mini running OS X Server. Previously we connected a Macbook Pro in target mode to our Mac Mini (both running Mavericks) using System Image Utility to create a NetRestore SP0 from which we could deploy to all of the computers in our lab running Mavericks. We did this as a method to update the applications on each iMac locally from the hosted NetRestore image we created. We are now receiving several new iMacs and Mac Pros running Yosemite (10.10) native and we wish to use the same process to update these machines from our Mac Mini (Mavericks) running OS X Server.
We are now trying create a NetRestore image from a native Yosemite Macbook Pro using System Image Utility on our Mac Mini (running Mavericks) however when the Yosemite Macbook Pro is connected in target mode, System Image Utility does not recognize the volume although it is recognized by our Mac mini (e.g., the yellow-orange image icon is displayed on the Mac Mini's desktop). Some of our lab computers are still running Mavericks, and my understanding is that Mavericks NetRestore Images cannot be created from a Mac Mini with OS X Server running Yosemite.
Must we upgrade our Mac mini from Mavericks to Yosemite for System Image Utility to recognize our Yosemite Macbook Pro (connected in target mode) in order to create a Yosemite NetRestore Image?
Note: We know there are better alternatives (e.g., Munki) to deploy updates to our machines via server and are working to establish a more convenient process, but this is the method we have been comfortable using before running into the above issue.
Thanks all!

You could use DeployStudio to 'serve' both Yosemite and Mavericks images from your Mac mini which can still run Mavericks. You would also use DeployStudio to make an image of the MacBook once it has been loaded and then this image can be restored to multiple machines.

  • HT204291 Apple TV 3rd generation. Bad image when mirroring second user's desktop from Mac mini 2012

    Hello All,
There are Mac Mini 2012 with OS X 10.8.2 and Apple TV 3rd G with 5.2 (6010.96). There are 2 users on the Mac.
The problem is when I start Mac Mini and log on with one user I am able to mirror the desktop. When I switch to another user and try to mirrow the desktop, I see bad image (image full of green artifacts) with good sound.
One user is admin. It does not matter which user is sharing the screen first. It is always the second one that will not be able to mirror the screen till Mac Mini is rebooted.
At the same time if I try to airplay something from iPhone or iPad, it goes well.
Please help to solve the problem.
    Kind Regards,
    Kirill

With update to OS X Mavericks the problem is gone

  • Mac mini server won't load after creating RAID0

After creating a RAID0 stripe set and tried to re-install Lion server back on my new Mac mini server, it failed at the end of the installation asking me to try to run the installation again, I tried three times with the same result.  So I tried to boot from a USB Lion image but it won't recognize it, I even tried to boot from a USB Snow Leopard image and it won't recognize it either.  What else can I try to bring my Mac mini server back.

Have a look at this thread guys, it should help sort out your problems.

  • How can I create RAID 1 on Mac mini server just now from box.

I bought my Mac mini server two days ago and decided that 1Tb + 1Tb HDD are very good for RAID 1 (mirroring).
Thinking - doing ... Open Disk Utility, try to change and create RAID. Nothing. Try to reinstall OS X - recovery part are on disk all time.
Does anybody can help me to create what I want and how to do this with minimum energy. Thanks a lot.

Start from an Internet Recovery which boots you into it's own Recovery Partition. From there use Disk Utility to put your 2 drives into RAID 1. Reinstall OS X from the Internet Recovery once you have done that and install everything else as you need to.
Be aware that RAID volumes do not have their own Recovery Partition so you will need to either have an external drive with an RP to boot into else you will need to use Internet Recovery each time (which is around a 650MB download).

  • I have just update my mac mini server to OX Yosemite, but now the iTunes is not working at all.

I have just updated my Mac Mini Server (Mid 2011) to OS Yosemite ver 10.10, after the update, iTunes is not working, and i have tried to reinstall iTunes over and over again but it was not successful , please advise if you have a solution or share similar problems. Thank you.

You have to upgrade to 10.6.8 to be able to download iTunes 10.7 or 11.  The 10.6 Snow Leopard DVD is in the Apple online store. You can get it for $19.99. You will need to be running 10.6.8 to access the App Store to order Lion or Mountain Lion. http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
First we need to know which one of the 9 different models of MacBook you have. To see which model you have go to the Apple in the upper left corner and select About This Mac, then click on More Info. When System Profiler comes up check the Model Identifier and post it back here.
The Early 2006 model 1,1 Core Duo can only run a maximum of 10.6 Snow Leopard.
The models Late 2006 Core 2 Duos 2,1 through Early 2008 4,1 can only run a maximum of 10.7 Lion.
The Late 2008 model 5,1 Aluminum Unibody through the Mid 2010 White Unibody model 7,1 can run 10.8 Mountain Lion.

  • Instability in 2012 Mac Mini Server after Yosemite 10.1.1 Install

I bought a NEW 2012 Mac Mini server on clearance in the online Apple Store last month. I had a 256 SDD installed as startup drive along with Yosemite earlier this week. It crashes, freezes and randomly restarts. Not sure where to start with trying to figure this out. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
It happens under various circumstances but here is the report on the latest that happened a few minutes ago. I had clicked on the Desktop Icon "Macintosh SSD", the boot drive. I got the spinning wheel and then a spontaneous restart.
I apologize if too much of the report is included here. Not sure where to stop.
Crash-panic Report. When I clicked on Macintosh SSD (Boot Drive) I got a spinning wheel followed by a system restart.

Glad that you got it solved, John. That model was only replaced at the end of last year, it is not that old and far better in terms of flexibility than the current models. Although the current models are growing away from SATA and towards PCI which, in its logical conclusion, will be faster ito access (read and write), speeds.
    Linc's advice was 100% spot-on.
Have fun with your 'new' Mini

  • Mac mini server with yosemite has no video

heres the problem; i have a mac mini server (2013) and i upgraded to yosemite a few weeks ago. first when it went into dleep mode it would not power back up; i saw this was a problem so after rebooting i turned off sleep mode & problem solved. for a few days now, on powering on the fan ran continuously then yesterday there was no video. i reset SMC & PRAM - no effect. i tried to boot to safe mode but still no video. help

Hi, long story short - I returned the Pegasus, got a new Pegasus and tested it. Also the second Pegasus had the error described above. So we returned that one as well, and bought a Synology DS1513+ instead.
I do not know for sure what the problem with the Pegaus'es was, but I suspect it is this:
    http://features.techworld.com/storage/1019/what-is-time-limited-error-recovery/
Shortly summarized - the drives in the Pegasus RAID box were not designed for a RAID setup. So error handling in the drives, and in the RAID box, interfered with each other, making the box marking drives faulty when they were not - and the copy job stopped because of a TLER error (Time Limited Error Recovery). Some of the error handling on the individual drives should be turned off. We ended up buying a Synology DS1513+ instead, with WD Red drives. These drives are specifically designed for RAID setups. This machine completed the copy job without error. I think the Toshiba drives (DT01ACA200) that were in the Pegasus were not designed for a RAID setup. So it all boils down to - a design flaw at the Pegasus team?

Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the
computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager
screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    4. Reinstall Yosemite: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall OS X from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

Failed to create a user with Mac Mini Server, the message "Failed to process the command writesettings" in the module "servermgr_sharing"

I have a Mac Mini with OS X Server 10.8.5 and Server 2.2.1 and have a problem to share the public folder.
When I enter the Server application to indicate that I want to share the public folder on the network and assign user I get the following message appears
And I can not share the folder.
If I go from my i-mac get mac mini server view and access the public folder, but I can not open any of the files there.
That I can do to fix this?
    thank you very much

  • Mac Mini Server on Yosemite showing x2 Servers with one being redundant

    Hi
I have a Mac Mini OS X Server that worked fine with setup/name of 'server' on Mavericks, however since upgrading to Yosemite the server has now become Server (2) (or server-2) leaving a redundant 'server' (server) in the shared tab.I can't access 'server' on the Mac Mini server or via the Network (even with connect as) and cannot rename \server-2' to server. I have re-installed the OS with no change.
Does anyone have any ideas what is going on here please and also how I could reset the 'serve-2r' to show correctly as 'server' and remove the erroneous one?
    Thanks
    Glennyboy

The real answer to this depends on two things:
    1) whether you're just trying to do this within your lab, or you want external systems to be able to get to your services (e.g. students be able to access these resources from outside the school network)
    2) whether each device in your schools' network have real-world IP addresses, or whether the network uses NAT.
If the answer to 1 is that this is only within the lab then there isn't likely to be any issue - get an IP address for your server from the network admins (which is why #2 is relevant) and you're set. The network guys would only have other involvement if you wanted to get external access working, in which case you've got to talk to them about opening holes in firewalls, etc.
If this is purely internal (or, at least, doesn't need access from outside the school network) then there isn't likely to be any problem. You could even get away without DNS, although it would be nice if you could get a sensible hostname from the DNS administrators (e.g. server.yourlab.yourschool.edu) but even without that there shouldn't be anything preventing you from running a service and having internal clients connect to it (other than policy issues, of course…). For the most part the admins wouldn't even know you're running a server.
Getting a static, non-conflicting IP address that valid for the school's network is going to be key, though.

  • Having trouble creating NetRestore images.

I am pulling out what little hair I have on this one, so any help is greatly appreciated.
I am creating a NetRestore image of a 10.8.2 laptop, connected (firewaire) to a server running 10.8.2. System Image Utility does it's thing, says it's done. I can make it availlable.
This is where the hilarity ensues.
It ends up being a NetBoot image. No matter what settings I check, whether I use the "custom" option or not, every image I have made that should have ended up a NetRestore image, boots the laptops I am trying to image with the very same image, but only as a NetBoot.
I even attempted to make a NetInstall image from my Mountain Lion installer, and it does the same exact thing and it ends up making a NetBoot image.
All created images end up in a .nbi folder, all in the correct folder to be served from.
Please tell me I am missing something simple, I cannot keep creating an image of the same computer expecting a different result. Isn't that the definition of insanity?
    Help?

I'm fumbling through this process as well and find it incredible that there is practically nothing from Apple which documents the full process that is required of us.  All I have been able to find are a few paragraphs which tell me that I want NETBOOT images for getting my computers up to the point of being imaged and that I want NETRESTORE images for cloning of these machines.  Apart from that I feel as though I'm left on my own to figure out HOW I'm supposed to make it work.
That being said, I can't tell you what is wrong in your specific case but I can offer two suggestions:
    1)  I was told on 3/1/13 by a senior apple enterprise guy that you can't perform the IMAGE creation on the server if the two machines have different hardware.  Lets say you have your laptop connected to an imac running the server app...you can't boot your laptop into TARGET DISK MODE (TDM) with firewire/thunderbolt to the imac and run the SYSTEM IMAGE UTILITY and expect the process to give you what you desire.  I've proven to myself that you can do it but I was told flat out that this won't work because the machine that runs the SIU will build an image for that type of hardware and you can't then push the image out to a different machine.  So in this case you end up with an imac image that you couldn't deploy to your laptops, even though the source image came from a laptop.
Apparently you will need to use a 2nd laptop in this scenario to run the SIU; or you can boot the machine onto another volume and run the SIU from that volume against the source volume.  You could do this by booting the machine into recovery mode using R at startup and use the restore options to put a clean O/S onto an external drive-then boot to that drive and run SIU against your source.
    2) I've found something called the PENN STATE MACADMINS
    http://macadmins.psu.edu
they have published lengthy videos and associated PDFs of those presentations which are supposed to help folks like us.  The problem that I'm running into with what is currently posted is that it is for 10.7, not 10.8.  I'm currently wading through it and trying my best to work out the differences myself.
    -good luck

  • System image utility set to create NetRestore Image, creates Netboot Disk instead

Hi, I'm trying to create some OS X 10.10.1 netrestore images and no matter what I do with selecting options SIU makes the image a netboot image instead of a netrestore image. Has anyone any suggestions?
As a workaround I've created my image and used the .dmg with an old working netrestore image.

    Hi Patrick,
If you are having issues creating a NetRestore image in System Image Utility, you may find the following articles helpful (apologies if you have already seen them):

  • How do I install Snow Leopard as a partition with Yosemite on a 2001 Mac Mini?

I have owned Mac's on and off since the 80's.  I currently own (myself and my kids) a 2008 MBP, iPhone 4 and 4s, 2 old iPhone 3's, just purchased a 2011 Mac Mini and iPhone 6, and my work-from-home computer is a 4 month old MBP.
Several years ago, I upgraded the 2008 MBP to Mountain Lion.  Then the one and only game that I have played since around 2001, Star Wars Galactic Battlegrounds, wouldn't work on Mountain Lion so I successfully added a 50GB partition and reinstalled Snow Leopard and the game has worked great ever since.
Recently, I gave my son that 2008 MBP, so I purchased the Mac Mini (i5 dual, 8GB memory, 750 HDD) and immediately upgraded it to Yosemite.  I proceeded to carve out a 50GB partition and have tried several times to install Snow Leopard to no avail.
After creating the 50GB partition, I rebooted, and held down the option key so I could then have the option install the Snow Leopard onto that 50GB partition - but it just keeps freezes up on me.  I even went so far as to try to copy the 50GB off the 2008 MBP onto the Mac Mini and that (understandably) didn't work either.
While I know enough to cause trouble, I am completely flummoxed with this.  I've run many searches and haven't been able to find a solution.
Can someone please walk me through the steps to make this work?  When I do restart, I don't even see that 50GB drive like I do when I restart the 2008 MBP so I suspect something may be wrong from the get go.  In Disk Utility, it shows the 2 partitions just fine, but not on reboot/restart with the option key held down.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Thanks very much for the quick reply.  I figured it would something that simple.  Like I said, I only know enough to cause trouble.  LOL
Thanks again,  Guess I need to find a new game to play.  LOL
