Creating new mailbox

I have created many mailboxes in the past, so I was surprised this morning when my attempt to create another one created what the Mail program chooses to call a "Child". What happened was that the first time I clicked to create the new Mailbox, nothing happened, or so I thought at the time. It was only when I tried again that I noticed that the Mailbox I wanted had been created, but inside of an existing one, and that the new Mailbox was called a "child" of the already existing one.
There may come a time when I would like to use this feature, but not now. How can I make sure that when I create a new Mailbox, it will stand alone and not as the "child" of another Mailbox?
How can I delete the "child" that Mailbox just created?

Hi Niku
You can actually drag your mailboxes - and their children (subfolders) - to reorder them. Note, though, that Mail will automatically sort mailboxes alphabetically. So, if you have a subfolder called "Accounts", you'll only be able to drop it around the top of your folder list. Likewise, "Xylophone Lessons" will go towards the end.
When you drag the folder around, you'll see a black line with a small circle at its left side. This is slightly difficult to explain, but to drop the folder at the "root" level (ie, so that it isn't a subfolder), you'll want the line to be as long as possible, so that the small circle is aligned just to the right of the disclosure triangles next to your other root folders (eg, Inbox, Sent, Junk).
Now, to make sure that when you create a new mailbox, it's at the root level, make sure you're clicked on one of your "fixed" folders (I recommend Inbox for simplicity). Then go to Mailbox - New Mailbox, and you'll see, at the top of the naming window,
"Enter name for new local mailbox to be created at the top level in the mailboxes list."
If you had selected one of your user-created folders, and then clicked New Mailbox, you'd see:
Enter new mailbox name to be created as a child of the local mailbox “Your Folder”.
Hope that helps!
Matt

  • Cannot edit/create new mailbox in ECP - Exchange 2013 CU6

Hello, I am currently running Exchange 2013 CU6. I cannot perform tasks related to recipients such as edit/create new mailbox. Additionally I cannot view the properties of the virtual directories.
I tried multiple browsers (Chrome, Firefox, IE) in different PCs and the result is the same
For example, I cannot click "Browse" in "new user mailbox" tab
"New local Mailbox move" page displays blank
I browsed through the event logs and found the following errors (Event 4 and Event 21):

     Any help?

    Hello Amy,
I will try to follow your suggestions. I will update once I get access to the server.
Anyways, the whole thing was back to normal for 1 day on its own, but right now the issue is happening again. Permission-wise, the account I used is in listed Organization Management role
Update: I forgot to try the EMS, but after I recycle the
MSExchangeECPAppPool, everything works fine, except for viewing Groups and Permissions

  • Create new mailbox for existing users?

    Hi All,
I am new to JNDI concepts. I need to create new mailbox for existing users in domino directory. is it possible?
Scenario is : I have some users in domino directory. They dont have mail account now. I want to create it.
    Kindly guide me...
    Thanks,
    Ram

    Hi,
You can try LSMW (Direct method) for uploading class values.
Upload file can hae following structure:
    OBJEK     |     ATINN     |     KLART     |     ATWRT
Release Grou+Release strategy |     Characteristic name     |     Class type     |     Class Value
e.g. rel grp is PO, rel strategy is 01, characteristic name is EBAN_EKORG, and class value is 1000 then
    OBJEK     |     ATINN     |     KLART     |     ATWRT
    PO01     |     EBAN_EKORG |     032     |     1000
    multiple characterstics can be
    OBJEK     |     ATINN     |     KLART     |     ATWRT
    PO01     |     EBAN_EKORG |     032     |     1000
    PO01     |     EBAN_EKGRP |     032     |     100

  • Exchange 2010 Unable to create new mailboxes through provisioning

Recently I started noticing that when attempting to create a new mailbox in Exchange 2010 I was receiving the error "Load balancing failed to find a valid mailbox database". I checked the provisioning by running the command "Get-MailboxDatabase
    | ft Name,IsExcludedFromProvisioning". All my databases are set to "true". All I would have to do is run the command "get-mailboxdatabase | set-mailboxdatabase -isexcludedfromprovisioning $false" to enable the provisioning again. My
question is here, does this require any kind of reboot or setting the DAG into maintenance mode? These are prod servers and I would hate to run a command that might cause an unplanned downtime of any sort. I got a feeling that this is probably a quick simple
command and wont cause any issues, just want to confirm that this won't require any sort of planning before running.

No, you don;t have to restart the server or make any changes in DAG.

In terms of what's causing it, the clue is in the stack above.
its one of the cmdlet extension agents.  Which one?  Well the one at index 0
Run this, and you should find its the Mailbox Creation Time Agent
    Get-CmdletExtensionAgent | select Name, priority
    Get-CmdletExtensionAgent | select Name, priority
I'd then run Test-Servicehealth to check services are all responding.
Can you post the exact command you are running to get this?

  • Create new mailbox via Groupwise web service (SOAP)

    Good evening!
I'm new to Groupwise integration via SOAP and was looking through the web service API at this page.
Unfortunately, I was not able to find a method that would allow me to create a new mailbox. Do you have any info if this is even doable via the Groupwise web services? If so, what method should I be using?
    Kind regards
    Hubbovich

That is only possible programmatically through
    the Admin API.

  • Created new mailbox, not showing up

I recently created a new top level mailbox, named "Sent Messages"; it did not appear immediately after creation, and hasn't shown up after restarting Mail.
I thought maybe I didn't hit the "OK" button during the Naming prompt, so I tried to add a new mailbox of the same name; I receive an error stating 'The mailbox ~/Library/Mail/Mailboxes/Sent Messages.mbox already exists'.
I've navigated to this location in Finder, and see that indeed there exists a folder by this name, containing a single .plist file. I've compared the contents of this .plist to the .plist of another top level mailbox that appears properly, and there are no negligible differences.
I've tried to Rebuild Mailbox on all of my user-created mailboxes, and looked into hierarchial mailboxes to see if it got created in a nested fashion; all to no avail.
I've tried deleting the .mbox in the ~/Library/Mail/Mailboxes directory, but it just gets recreated the next time I launch Mail.
I've tried creating a new uniquely named mailbox, and it gets correctly created and appears at the top level in Mail, as well as under ~/Library/Mail/Mailboxes.
I've switched view options from large to small mailbox icons, hoping this refresh might catch the missing mailbox
I suppose my next course of action would be to export my mail, flush my preferences, and recreate my account and reimport all my messages, but I'd really like to avoid having to do that.
I have no idea what else to try to do to fix this problem. Has anyone else experienced a similar issue?
(Fun fact: I started every paragraph in this thread with the letter "I".)
      Mac OS X (10.4.7)

It isn't clear to me what your problem really is, so I'm not sure what it is that you want to fix, but I can help you better understand what happened.
"Sent Messages" is the name Mail uses for the standard mailboxes where sent messages of each account are stored. Such mailboxes don't appear by their name in Mail, but rather as children of the Sent group using the account name instead (if you have more than one account).
A Sent Messages.mbox folder in ~/Library/Mail/Mailboxes/ would also be treated as a standard Sent mailbox and, hence, displayed within the standard Sent group (as On My Mac), instead of treated like any other custom mailbox.

  • Create new mailboxes but where the heck are they?

I am so frustrated I want to switch back to Windows. I am using the new mail feature of Lion and everytime I create a new mailbox, it tells me it's going to create the mailbox in "on my mac" location. But where the heck is this location? Why can't the folder or the mailbox just be created in the right pane of mail. Why do have bury my mailbox I created in some multilayer almagom simply because they don't want me to work in the way I am use to. Stop being so Big Brother Apple, this really really is awful.

OK I solved this myself as I found that it was hidden in the new mail and I just had to switch it show

  • What??? You Can't Create New  Mailboxes on an iPhone???

    How incredibly stupid is that???
So I finally decide to buy one of these things (two, actually, since I can't get one unless my wife gets one too...) and one of the first things I tried to do is... move a message from the inbox to.... ANY other folder. There, at the bottom of the message, is the icon... a folder with an arrow. Tap that... and... what's this?? You can't create a new mailbox?
Oh wait, maybe you have to create the mailboxes in Mail on your MacBook, an then sync them to the iPhone. Nope, that doesn't work either.
So maybe you wind up on the phone with some charmin lass in Bangalore and you listen incredulously as she tells you that this INCREDIBLY SIMPLE AND S.O.P. CAN'T BE DONE with an iPhone!!!
And then you tell her... but... there it is, right in the user manual I downloaded. Three mailboxes in addition to "inbox" "sent" and "trash." Where did they come from???
Then you spend 10 minutes on dead silence, on hold, and she comes back and says, oh, you can only do that with an iMap account! Like, hotmail or gmail or something.
Well, I don't have hotmail or gmail (I do have Yahoo Mail but don't actually use it for anything) I have Apple Mail on my MacBook. Are they telling me that the mail program on this most-expensive-smartphone in the world is really so stupid that it can't create a mailbox?? That every message I want to keep on the thing has to be kept in the inbox? How stupid IS THAT???
So, please, somebody.... tell me I'm wrong about this -- that lovely Ms. Bangalore is wrong about this... and tell me how I can create an additional mail box on my iPhone so that I don't wind up with 1,000 messages in my inbox.
Really, how hard, how fundamental, is a task like that?
    Thanks,
    --PS

With .Mac you get 10GB of storage, you can divide that between email, and web/iDisk space by logging in and going to your account settings on www.mac.com.
EDIT: When my mailbox on an IMAP server that limits to 200MB starts to get full, I move old messages to a "local" or "On My Mac" folder on my computer.
Thanks again for all the patient counsel around this issue. Here's the latest, in case anybody's still paying attention.
I've been able to convert my primary e-mail account from POP to IMAP, so that it is now fully syncable with my iPhone. However, I'm still a long way from migrating my entire e-mail operation to Mac Mail.
That is actually something that I would like to do. But I'm having a hard time now figuring out what exactly will be my "e-mail strategy" going forward.
Presently, I am still doing most of my e-mail (which is a large part of my work) using Eudora in Windows on the Mac (via Parallels). I have had to do that mostly because I have thousands of messages in folders in Eudora, and I have been relying heavily on Eudora's robust search functions to find material that has formed the basis of a book I've been writing. For that and other reasons I have had to continue running Windows even as I've been migrating to the Mac platform.
Now that a first draft of the book is done, I would love to abandon Windows altogether. I'm much happier in a pure Mac environment.
But switching to IMAP for MacMail has actually made the prospect more difficult, because the service that hosts my primary e-mail account only allows 100MB of storage on their IMAP servers. I have hundreds of folders and several GB of files and folders in Eudora; with that kind of limit, I really can't see moving all those files and folders into MacMail, and having them sync'd to the server. It's impossible, actually.
I do not need access to 98% of what I have stored in Eudora from more than one client. So it really doesn't need to be part of my IMAP scenario.
What I do need is a way to clear from the server e-mail that I want to keep locally. How do I do that if everything in an IMAP client is duplicated on the server?
As it is, the next time I start Eudora in Windows, it is going to download all the e-mail and delete it from the servers. Then the next time I start MacMail, it will all disappear from MacMail because it's been deleted from the server, right? That's not such a bad thing, because it clears the servers and because MacMail is not (yet) the permanent repository of my vast e-mail archives.
This gets confusing to even contemplate, let alone write about. Bottom line is a) how do I make MacMail my main e-mail program when there is surely going to be more than 100MB of data I want to maintain, and/or b) how do I preserve the e-mail that I do want to save locally if my primary account is IMAP and I don't want to keep everything on the server.
Remember, this whole issue arises because 98% of what arrives on my handheld (previously a Treo 650) I could just delete, and the other 2% I could save to a separate folder. But that was a POP account. Now I've had to alter my entire e-mail regimen JUST so I can have a folder for "keepers" on my handheld. And I SURE don't need those those thousands of e-mails in my permanent archives on the hand held (even if there is room for them).
Sorry, I keep trying to boil it down to a simple question, and it keeps getting complicated. Is there a primer on IMAP management that somebody can refer me to?
    Thanks,

    G5   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
"Repair Disk Permissions" from Disk Utility may help you.
    Also, please type
    ls -ld ~/Library
    ls -ld ~/Library/Mail
    ls -ld ~/Library/Mail/Mailboxes
in a Terminal and let us know about the output.

  • Mac Mail - Create New Mailbox Shortcut?

    Hi everyone,
Can you help? - I'd really like to be able to create a new mailbox using a keyboard shortcut, instead of navigating the menus.
What's the best way for me to do this?
    Thank you.

Hi, dibleyg. Welcome to the forums!
Have you tried using the "+" button at the bottom-left corner of the Mail window?

  • Child domain not available when creating new mailbox in Exchange 2010

    I’ve
installed Exchange 2010 in my environment with a single existing Exchange 2003
server. All current mailboxes are on the child domain. We have 1 root domain
    (rootdomain.com) and 1 child domain (child.rootdomain.com). Currently,
we're in the coexistence phase and mailflow is working as expected. Today,
I created a new mailbox using EMC on Exchange 2010 and noticed that the
child domain is not available. Only the root domain is available?
Hopefully, I do not need to reinstall Exchange 2010. How do I go about adding
    the child domain?

Did you domain prep the child domain?

From a Command Prompt window, run one of the following commands:
Run setup /PrepareDomain or setup /pd to prepare the local domain. You don't need to run this in the domain where you ran Step 3. Running
setup /PrepareAD prepares the local domain.
Run setup /PrepareDomain:<FQDN of domain you want to prepare> to prepare a specific domain.
Run setup /PrepareAllDomains or setup /pad to prepare all domains in your organization.

  • Cannot create new mailbox folder on my mac.

I am trying to add a new mailbox folder and gives me error cannot create on your mac? What is this all about?

Apparently, Mail has a bug that causes ~/Library/Mail/Mailboxes to sometimes be a file instead of a folder, and that prevents Mail from creating any mailboxes there.
Verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
After having fixed all the filesystem issues, if any, proceed as follows:
    1. Quit Mail if it’s running.
    2. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Mail/.
    3. Locate Mailboxes. If it’s a file instead of a folder, move it to the Trash.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder, i.e. ~/Library is the Library folder within the user’s home folder.
