Creating Outlined Text

If I want to make a collage in which images appear within a very large number, how can I do it?
The project is to present a hockey player (a child) with an 8x10 image on which is their player number containing images of the kid in hockey gear.
I have 6-8 different images and I want them to appear within the player number.
Can this be done?
Mary Lou

Mary Lou, here's one way (out of many!)
1. Create a new file and fill with white or any color you want for the background.
2. Activate the text tool and enter the number, creating a new layer. It doesn't matter what size font or color you use for this this. Use the Move tool to resize and position the number. With the Move tool you can also drag out the top and bottom handles to "fatten" the number. In this example I used Ariel Bold.
3. Add the pictures. These will go on separate layers.
4. Group the picture layers with the number layer. This crops the pictures into the number.
5. Use the Move tool to rearrange the pictures and resize them if necessary. You will probably want to use the Eraser tool to remove unwanted overlap as I did in Layer 1 (I erased the bottom right corner).
6. To optionally outline the number, duplicate the number layer and apply an Outside Stroke to the original (bottom) number layer.
Let me know if you need more info on any of the steps.

  • Creating Outlined Text in Pages 09

Having read the manual for Pages 09, i've learned how to create Outlined Text, but i want to know if i can keep the colour of the text as it was before creating the outline. For example, a black bold headline with a red outline? Instead what i get is just a black outline with the colour inside clear.

    Which problem of misalignment ?
Which problem of multiple objects ?
For the stroke, we may apply bold to the outline text if we want a 'larger' stroke.
You are so biased that you forget that with my "allinPages" soluce, the text remains editable.
With yours, if the text must be changed we must return to the third party tool.
Yours respond to the needs of some users.
My guess is that my soluce responds to the needs of more of them.
The only drawback which I encounters is with letters which join like the m and the p in Sample.
I must add that I deliberately built this example but as I use this kind of effect only for titles, in practice it doesn't strike because I don't use this kind of fonts for such use.

  • How to Create Outline Text in OS X 10.10 Preview

Just installed OS X 10.10 and, all in all, I'm very happy with the upgrade. Preview really has some nice enhancements, but one thing that seems to be missing is the ability to create outline text. It was present in Mavericks, but I can't find any way to do it in Yosemite. Anyone else notice this?

Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem solved sooner.

  • CS 5.5 Create Outlines text messes with stroke

I am running CS 5.5 and I need to be able to turn all my text into outlines.  Now, before I get slammed for doing this, I send most of my material over seas and converting the text to outlines is pretty much a requirement.
My issue is that when I do "Create Outlines" in InDesign, it automatically reduces the stroke width of all my text. Also, if I have it set to stroke to the outside of the text, it defaults to center.  If I try to change the converted text back to outside stroke it goes all crazy, not giving me a uniform stroke.
Is there a fix for this or a different way for me to convert my text and have the stroke attributes left alone?

    You are stuck.
I, too, am sometimes forced by my clients to convert all text to outlines. We're a translation provider, so my clients often want to be able to open up their InDesign files to adjust graphics without any fear of dropped fonts or human error damaging their translations. I don't know why you need to apply a stroke to text (are you faking bold?) but you can't include reliance on applying strokes to text in any workflow that relies on having all text converted to curves/outlines at the end of the project.
I've seen some workarounds of varying degrees of quality that worked okay in unique circumstances, but nothing that is a one-shot solution.
The link you posted - there is at least one thread on these forums about that link & how about that technique no longer works in CS5 or CS5.5, I can't recall exactly. I do remember that a particularly helpful & knowledgable Adobe employee pointed out that the fact that this method worked to convert all text to outlines was basically a workaround or hack - that what you were realy doing was flattening transparency, which converted type to outlines as a side-effect. So it would be useless to you in any event if you must retain layers in your PDF.
If you are, as I suspect, adding stroke to fake a boldface that you don't have (or that doesn't exist), try another technique - perhaps you can use a font editor to actually generate a font with the effect you're trying to get with the stroke. If you're using stroke as a visual effect, then you may be able to dupe & stack - set your stroked phrase without stroke, create outlines, duplicate, and then add stroke, then place it behind the first outlined word in the stacking order, then manually (using the direct select tool) play with the curves until it looks okay.
As I said before, I've seen a variety of workarounds, and if you can post a sample of what you are trying to do then perhaps I or one of the other forums readers can figure out a trick to suggest to you.

  • Grenerating Outlines creating ARCed text

    OUTLINE
I have some text that has a graphical outline around it. This
text needs to be Dynamic for localization. However, I still need to
have the outline appear around the text. I was hoping that this was
something that would be built in to Flash CS3. It's not. Is there a
way to do this in AS?
    1. Load text
    2. Show visible text w/Outlines
    ARCed Text
Is there a way to dynamically arc the text without breaking
it down into small movieclips or text fields?
    j

    It's in the Type menu...
BUT, outlining type for anything other than creating some sort of special effect is considered poor practice for a variety of reasons, including loss of editability, searchability, and loss of embellishments like automatic bullets and numbers, underlines, and paragraph rules that only work with actual text. • "Create outlines" grayed out for text-- what is the RIGHT option??

    Hey all,
So here's what happened. I created an image for a print template in PS (which I use all the time) and then used file-place to bring the image into the AI version of the template. (I don't use AI very often...) I knew that it might not be a good idea to bring in the text, so I didn't. Instead, I recreated the text in AI, selecting it with the text tool to change font size, etc. Each of the three pieces of text is on a separate outline. The next step is supposed to be to convert the text to outlines, but you guessed it, the "create outlines" option is grayed out.
The text is Titre font (I tried a few others and it didn't seem to make any difference.) The version for both PS and AI is CS5.
I've spent a lot of time searching for the solution online, but the problem is that there seem to be about a gazillion different possible options for what might work. Given the parameters here (created text in AI, selected with text tool, using separate layers), which is actually the RIGHT solution??
This artwork is for prizes for a writing contest (custom mugs), and it's supposed to be in by Wednesday-- HELP is greatly appreciated!!
(P.S.: This isn't my first post!! I'm not sure why the forums are listing it that way.)

    Realnise,
No, if you have three separate instances of Type, as it seems, for each of these you have to make sure it is selected in its entirety.

  • Some text after creating outlines fills with gadient

I have a few files in Illustrator CS that when I select all text and "create outlines" of them, about half of the text fills with black (normal), and the other half fill with a black to white gradient.
    Has anyone else seen this?
Thank you very much for any information regarding this.

If you are working too fast and press the decimal point on the numeric key pad it will change all your selected vectors to grad fills. Could this be what is happening? I do this sometimes by accident when going for the ENTER key.

    Hi there
I have designed the above white shadow using the path offset function. I want to create outlines for this shadoa only but am experiencing some difficulty. I only want the outlines for the white shadow so that this can be cut out, but another tricky thing is, i dont want the complete letters cut out but only the outline shape of letters (i tried to show above)..

If the offset is sufficient to make the borders of the white shadows overlap or have coinciding Anchor Points, you may Pathfinder>Merge, and then release Compound Paths and remove counters (holes in letters) as needed.

  • Converted outlined text not distilling properly

I'm not sure if this is an Illustrator issue or an Acrobat distiller plug-in issue or even a font, if someone can shed some light I would be so grateful.
I'm using the Mac CS3 design standard suite and the type family I'm using is Avenir on my MacBook Pro at home and a CS2 on a PC at work and the same issue happens on both platforms.
My newspaper only wants ads that are saved is a press optimized pdf with all type made into outlines.
When I view the text conversion in Illustrator's preview mode, all the text look accurate; all the I's and L's are outlined rectangles.
When I save the file as a pdf, with the press optimized setting and then view it in Acrobat, the I's and L's looks strange. When print to my proofing laser the kerning between the any i or l character is increased.
I will open this pdf in Illustrator and turn on the preview mode, Inotice that the I's and L's are no longer outlines but are now are two points (a vector stroke).
Any users out there have a solution other then manually creating I's and L's with the rectangle tool?

I outline text by highlighting the text and then select the Create Outline command under the Type pull-down menu. Never thought of flattening - the document only had two text blocks on one layer on top of a layer that had a placed tif image and a logo (that was completely vector art); I usually only use the flattening command when I use the transparency filter.
Thanks for the tip Wade, I'll try the Flattening with outline stroke checked first and see if that works.

  • Can't create outlines from a placed image?

I'm using illustrator and I placed this image:

    aelvir wrote:

I suspect you're imagining the Create Outlines command does something more than it really does. It is most typically applied to live text to turn it into shapes, and doesn't do much else. It simply doesn't apply to image content. In fact, whenever you see it disabled, that indicates it can't be applied to the object(s) you have selected.

  • Can Flash export VECTOR or outlined text in PDF,Ai or EPS?

We have a web based flash interface that allows customer to
design a custom product online. The problem is that the flash then
creates a PDF and that PDF never ACCURATELY matches what the
customer designed in the flash application. The line and letter
spacing is always off. I think the problem would be fixed IF we
could create or export a PDF or a Ai file or a EPS file from FLASH
that did NOT have the editable text. At the moment of EXPORT it
needs to convert all text to vector or outlined text. That would
alleviate the FONT problems. Does anyone know of a plug-in or some
    method for doing this?

Why do you want to change it to a png for placement? Just place it as the original .ai eps file you got. You never want to use a jpg, png or gif in a document that's going to be printed. The minute you change it to a png or jpg you're going to lose resolution. That's why it's pixelated

  • Create Outlines not working

I'm running ID CS6, v. 8.0.1 on Mac OSX 10.6.8. When I try to convert type to outlines, the Create Outlines option is grayed out. Also, it says 'Create Outlines menu' instead of just 'Create Outlines'.
I tried selecting the text box as well as just highlighting the text but neither worked. I also tried different fonts to make sure it wasn't font specific.
I trashed preferences and saved data and restarted. No change.

We use Font Explorer X Pro. No other plug-ins.
I tried replacing the create outlines plug in, but that didn't work. Then I went to Extensions Manager, and for some reason Create Outlines was not enabled. Not sure how that happened. Once I enabled it, everything seemed to work OK.
    Thanks for your help.

  • Creating Outline from textPath

    Hi,
Going follow one of first sentence from "Adobe_intro_to_scripting" which says:
...Each scripting item corresponds to a tool or a palette or menu item in an Adobe application...
I am trying to discover how to reach effect which is obtained from InDesign UI: menu Text:create outline.
I mean situation when there is some text on path typed (any splineItem as a parent) and is selected as an item (not using text tool).
In UI: to create outline at this point means to create compound path from entire text and to remove a splineItem.
In script code: app.selection[0].createOutlines() gives error, cause this method is not available for splineItem.
One can create outline from text's on path character, word, parentStory, etc, but there are a set of separated characters converted into path and still anchored onto parent splineItem path.
If the goal is to have a compound path from entire text placed on path (keeping formats and effects) is ID UI only way to reach it?
    or
    Am I missing something?
    thanks

    Hi,
using false as option creates a duplicate with same properties as from GUI ...
    var splineItem = app.selection[0];
    var wholeTextOneItem = splineItem.textPaths[0].texts[0].createOutlines(false)
    splineItem.remove()

  • Type, create outlines and merging questions

    Hi,
I have type which I then I created outlines. Then I have this shape (a rectangle frame), I want to merge the two so I can bring an image into the combined shape. I cannot figure out how to merge the outlines text with this frame - is this even possible to do in ID? I know how to do it in Illustrator using the pathfinder but I'd really like to get this done in ID.
    Hope I explained this OK?
    Thanks!

Check out the InDesign Secrets Blog. A post (below) discusses some of this.

PS: While this doesn't cover the use of the pathfinder to make a complex image frame, per your initial post, this may in fact be an easier route to accomplish your task.

  • How to create a text effect like this (see example)

    Hello everybody,
i would like to create a text, pretty similiar to this shirt: http://www.kuhvet.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/OKC-Conference-Champs-LR-T-shirt.jpg
So, the stext hould appear in 3D (kind of) and also should have a golden and silver outline. Also the shadow should drop in front of the text.
I hope that's possible and not that hard to create? I'm a beginner to Illustrator (CS4).
Thanks a lot for your help
    Warm regards from Germany
    Florian

I would not waste time using AI 3D tools to accomplish this effect. It is 1 point perspective. Start with your front text, establish a horizon  line and vanishing point, scale and duplicate the text using the vanishing point as your center of scaling, then connect the points to create the "extruded effect" between the to sets of text. You can outline the text to accomplish this.
For the reflected text, as John suggested, duplicate your text and distort it. Read about "Envelope Distortion" meshes. These will keep your distorted text fully editable, if that is a concern.
    Have fun learning Illustrator.
