Creating paths from pattern brush

I'm using Illustrator CS2 on Windows. I want to edit parts of a brush stroke I've made by basically converting each element from the pattern into a path so I can delete/rotate/resize certain elements.
Going to OBJECT>PATH>OUTLINE STROKE just gives me a the line that I followed with my cursor, not the pattern.
Thanks.

Expand Appearance under the Object menu worked.
Thank you so much!

  • Type on a path and pattern brush

    Hi,
As an exercise I'm recreating the logo for the Seattle Mariners. I've got it except for two things and would really appreciate help with:
1.) The type "Mariners" sloping downward in an arc. I was able to get the Seattle part using type on a path on a circle and typing on top. Question is, can I also type Mariners on the bottom of that path? I recall that not being the case. Am I supposed to draw another circle over the one that Seattle is typed on and then on that one type on the bottom? Regardless, please explain how to do it?
2.) For the stitching, am I supposed to create one stitch and then create a brush, draw a curve and then apply the brush to that curve? How do I space them out that way? If not, please explain.
    Thanks!

  • Create path from line-drawing as one line?

I am preparing files to be used with a laser cutter. So I drew a picture, scanned it, and put it in Illustrator.
When I try to create a path, it outlines both sides of the stroke of my pen. I need to create ONE line, not two.
Is there a way to do this?
    Thanks!

    Rachel,
If you are using Image/Live Trace, you may set it to Stroke, not Fill, in the options.
Or you may redraw with the Pen Tool on top of the locked image and get the stroked path that way.

  • New Pattern Brush issue

I'm trying to create a new pattern brush with just a line and arrowhead at the end.  I've tried following the instructions that the help screen provided and am getting stuck.  When I choose to create a new pattern brush the only options available for the different segments are "None", "Original" and "Fish Pattern".  How do I get the colored line and arrow available?  All I'm trying to do is create a simple line with an arrowhead that doesn't change shape when I extend the length of the line.  So far it's been a nightmare for me.  Any help will be greatly appreciated!

I need to make two lines each a different length but with the same size arrowhead.
Remember that you can apply multiple strokes to a path.
Create a Graphic Style that involves two strokes: One stroke is an ArtBrush for the shank of the arrow; the other stroke is a PatternBrush containing the end(s) of the arrow. See item 6 below:

  • Pattern Brush Help

I created a few pattern brushes. In some the graphics have a fill, and in others they don't. I have having a problem with a brush, it will apply to a straight line, but once i add a curve to the line the pattern disappears. What am I doing wrong?

  • Question about pattern brushes

I want to use a detailed color photograph as a pattern brush, what is the best way to do it?
I have rasterized the photo, then used image trace high quality photo, then creates the new pattern brush and used it. But this makes the illustration super heavy and slows down my computer. Ia there a way to vectorize photos with high quality without having that many points in the vector?
Or is there another way to use photos as pattern brushes?

    isanavland,
An Image Traced photo will be heavy with Anchor Points.
You may create a cleaner/leaner version using the Pen Tool, with the almost inevitable decisions about simplifications.
Does it make a difference if you turn the Image Traced photos into a Symbol?

  • How do I use "Trim Paths" after "Create Shapes from Vector Layer" on a strokes only layer?

    Hello,
    Adobe After Effects CC
    2014.0.2
    Version 13.0.2.3
I have imported an illustrator file that was created in Illustrator CC 18.0.0. The file contains the outline of a logo. It is the logo with the fill set to none and the stroke set to 1px.
I drag the logo_strokes.ai file onto the composition, right click, and click Create Shapes from Vector Layer.
A new layer is created and in the Contents "drop down", a Fill 1 layer is created.
When I select the Contents "drop down" and click Add / Trim Paths, a Trim Paths 1 layer is created.
When I animate Trim Paths 1, it appears to animate the Fill layer, not the stroke.
How do I get it to animate just the stroke, and not show a fill at all?
    Thank you.

    Thanks,
I am reading and watching tutorials. Still stuck on that one point.
Here are the images of the After Effects layers. The illustrator layer is the top layer.

  • How to not include the path when creating pdf from many html files?

  • Creating a stamp or brush from black and white image

Once befoe I imported a file from my genealogy file and it came in with a transparent backgrount.  It is a black document with a white background.  I exported it from a Family Tree Maker file.  I'm not sure how I changed the  background to be transparent.  I was using PSE 6 then.  When I pulled on into PSE 9 it keeps the white background.  I have an option to export the file from Family Tree Maker I have several file options, pdf, jpg, bmp, png, or emf.  I have tried all but emf.  Is there a way to create the "stamp" or "brush" from the black printed portion of the image?

When you have the file opened in PSE, double-click on the background layer to convert it into a regular layer.  Then you can use the Magic Wand tool to select the white area (de-select the "Contiguous" option, and use a high tolerance value of 85 or so).  Hit your Delete key and you'll have a transparent background.  Then save it as a PNG file, which will preserve the transparency.
Is that what you're looking for?

  • Trouble with Pattern Brush

I have a very simple graphic that consists of three closed paths, black stroke, no fill, that I have used before to create a pattern brush.  Now in another file it is telling me that the graphic contains an element that cannot be used in pattern brushes.  It is the identical graphic!  I solved my current problem by opening the file that has it as a pattern brush and saving the brush file and opening it in my new file.  But I want to figure out why I couldn't create a pattern brush in my new file with this same graphic...any ideas?

    State version of Illustrator.
Describe exactly the steps you performed to move the Pattern Brush from one file to another when you received the error. Or, provide step-by-step to reproduce the error. Or, post the problem file somewhere that others can look at it.

  • Pattern Brushes- steps to print

I am using AI CS2, and am designing a logo for a restaurant to be used as a neon sign in addition to menus, t-shirts, etc. this is my first real design job (i'm nervous!). so, as i developed the logo i used a pattern brush to create a rope, which the client loves. i realize that this is a bit of a no-no. how can i make the pattern brush printable?
    thanks in advance!

Not to be preachy, but just a little more friendly advice, since you say this is your first real design job, and that you are nervous:
    > Never send editable native AI files for someone downstream to edit unless they assume responsibility for any errors.
To elaboate: If there are errors in your file, you need to not only know about them, but you need to know how to correct them and how to avoid them in the future. Therefore, corrections should be made by you.
It necessarily follows that a beginner should especially avoid getting himself into projects with "crisis" deadlines. Leave yourself time to accommodate a round or two of edits if they become necessary.
If you are not already using Acrobat Professional, get it and get friendly with its settings. When you save your AI file as press-ready PDF, all that "live" stuff gets "normalized" to things a PostScript printer (and some other programs, like InDesign) can understand. Acrobat also has tools that Illustrator does not, like preflight checks and the ability to preview color separations to check for errors.
Do not automatically assume that everyone working at a printing house cannot / will not wreck your file. Printers hire entry-level workers, too, just like anyone else. Some of them even hire them into the pre-press room. Even an experienced pre-press worker may be less familiar with the application-specific design commands of the native program than you are.
Errors are inevitable. When disputes arise, the question invariably comes down to "who's error is it?" Work toward the day when you can confidently disallow anyone to modify your native files downstream. Correcting your own mistakes is the only way you will learn to avoid them.
Seek relationships with responsible and respected local output houses. A good printing house may not have time to give you free coaching on every project, but many are more than willing to help you understand their processes to help streamline workflows in future work you may bring them. Find one printer like that and most of the real-world knowledge you gain there will apply to other printing houses, too (even less friendly ones).
If at all possible, find opportunity to smell the ink, touch the paper, and understand the repro processes you design for. In other words, find an opportunity to spend some time in a press room, a pre-press room, and (although they are far and few between these days) a litho darkroom. If that means taking night courses at the local tech school, do that.
Understand that "the repro processes you design for" includes more than just offset commercial printing. Even in this post, you mentioned signage and t-shirts (silkscreen). There's also flexography, still used in packaging and labels. The best way to build your AI files can differ radically depending upon the target repro method.
Example: Although that "logo" (which I suspect is CMYK, correct?) may look great when prepared for offset printing, it may very well be quite disappointing when screen printed on a T-shirt. The best and "punchiest" screen printing is often not what we consider "normal" 4-color process, but leverages a wide range of possibilities inherent in screen printing, but not available in offset. One common and obvious example: Normal CMYK process assumes tranlucent inks, even in screen printing. Translucent inks look like crap on dark substrates. The best screen printing designs can be printed on colored substrates. (No one wants to
    only wear white T-shirts.)
Another example: The sign industry actually
fabricates things. So it often involves devices (vector plotters--routers, cutters, engravers) entirely different from any kind of printing process. Those devices often require continuous vector paths, free of overlaps and crosscuts, not just artwork that "looks right" on screen.
A real logo (a true corporate or product identity graphic) usually has to be designed to properly accomodate all those repro disciplines.

  • Pattern brush, colored lines between segments

    Hi all,
Issues with the pattern brush won´t stop for me...
This time I try to create a pattern brush from paths, everything seems aligned to be but still there are discoloured lines between the segments. I´ve tried again and again and now I´m tired of it. Everytime I read a tut it seems simple but I can´t get it to work. Here is a link to the Ai file I´m using ( CC ), perhaps someone can have a look and point me to the obvious. Those gaps stay after export, so it´s not a preview thing I guess.
    Thank you in advance,

Did not thought of that. Thank you very much. I think I´ll read your book

  • Pattern brush

    Hi,
I am trying to create a pattern brush with the two elements you'll see at the top of the attached file. The perfect square shape should be the corners and the thinner rectangle with the link graphic in it should be in between. I created a pattern brush placing each of those elements where they should be in the Pattern Brush Options Dialog Box, but as you can see in the area I circled in red the thin rectangle element with the link in it is overlapping the edge of the corner element. How can you correct that so that the corners look like they do in the green circled area at the bottom of the image?
    Thanks very much!

    22,
The principle is illustrated at the top of Scott's first screenshot. The artwork that is contained in the Side Tile of the Pattern Brush needs to have an unfilled, unstroked rectangle as its rearmost object.
When you first define a Pattern Brush, if the artwork does not include that unfilled, unstroked rectangle, Illustrator automatically creates it at the size of the artwork bounds.
If you drag a Pattern Brush that contains artwork in its Side Tile and a Corner Tile from Brushes palette and drop it onto the page, it is a Group. If you Ungroup, then the artwork from each Tile is a Group.
So Ungroup twice. Then just concern yourself with the artwork for the Side Tile. Its rearmost object is the unfilled, unstroked rectangular path. That path needs to be the same height as the artwork from the Corner Tile. Keep it the same width as the Side Tile artwork. After adjusting (or re-creating) it, make sure it is still the rearmost object. Then, with the black pointer, marquee select around the Side Tile artwork. AltDrag it and drop it onto the existing Side Tile of the Brush you are modifying.

  • Pattern brush with negative spacing?

I'm trying to create a pattern brush where the pattern elements overlap eachother, so i tried to set the brush spacing to -5%, but AI won't let me. Why not? is there a work-around to achieve this?
    thanks

All Pattern Brushes have the unfilled, unstroked rectangular path that controls the spacing of the tiles. If you don't create one as part of the original artwork, it is created automatically when you define the Brush.
So for existing Pattern Brushes, you can:
    1. Drag the Brush out of the Brushes palette and drop it onto the Artboard.
    2. White pointer: Mouse around the bounds of the artwork, and you can detect the invisible rectangle.
    3. Select and drag the side(s) of the rectangle to alter the spacing. You can also scale it, or move it off center from the artwork to cause the artwork be offset from the path to which the Brush will be applied.
    4. Black pointer: Deselect. Then select the whole Brush artwork Group. AltDrag it and drop it back into its slot in the Brushes palette. A dialog will ask you if you want to apply the change to existing paths that already have the Brush applied.
I seldom ever actually draw the invisible rectangle when creating the artwork for the Brush. I just draw the artwork, drag it to the Brushes palette to store it as a Brush. Then I drag it right out again and proceed as described above to alter the invisible rectangle. Having SmartGuides on makes it easier to detect the invisible rectangle at the bottom of the object stack.

  • Using images in pattern brushes no practical control space?

    Hi!
In Illustrator there was a long-awaited my new feature. Brushes with rater images - WoW!
    Thank you very much.
I learned this and practice what quenches my "wow" ...
I have problems that I can not understand, I will be grateful for the practical help.
    1. Pattern Brush from the image.
    — When I create a brush with the image of a pattern I would like to use negative values to between images there was a space.
Illustrator does not allow for such a value?
Example Adobe does not explain the problem, but raves (very good) features art Brush with img.

Bingo! Thank you Monika!, you're right. Correct positioning of the rectangle has the effect of which I had in mind with the corners.
