Creating playlists from playlists

I'm very dissatisfied with the new music app. I use playlists a lot in order to keep tabs of my large collection. My 'purchased' playlist for example is how I quickly find my latest additions to add them to a new playlist. Except now I can't. This has been a problem on the ipad for a good long while but now it's gimped on the iphone as well: when you create a new playlist you now can't see (afaik) or choose from other playlists. Why Apple?!

You cannot restore the original date added value. What are you trying to do? Migrating the entire library from one machine to another will preserve date added. If your library database has been deleted see this post.

  • How can I use home sharing between our iphones (create playlists from both accounts at once)

How can I use home sharing between our iphones, so that we can create playlists with songs from both of our libraries?  We share a Macbook Pro (separate accounts) and each have the new iphone, but when I have my iphone and try to create a new playlist, I can only grab songs from one account.  Is there a way to create a playlist using both accounts since we are sharing?
Does it have to be created within iTunes first on our Mac?

The short answer: because Home Sharing isn't designed for sharing apps, and apps aren't designed to be shared.
The longer answer:  Think of it like this...
You download some music in iTunes.  With Home Sharing, another user can listen to it by streaming it over the network.  But the data itself is on your computer.  If you turn off the computer or take it off the network, the other user can't access it.
But if you send another user the app, they aren't just streaming the data- they installed it on their iOS device.  Because they weren't the one that purchased it, such a transfer could easily be considered "piracy" or "stealing," and nobody likes that (least of all, Apple).
When iTunes sees this app, it obviously recognized it, as if saying, "Hey, how did you get this app on your device, if I have no record of you purchasing/downloading it from the iTunes store?"

  • I have downloaded all my music from the cloud to my new iPhone and created playlists so I can listen to it when not it wifi like when on a plane. If I turn on iTunes Match will I still have this music still downloaded?

I have downloaded all my music from the cloud to my new iPhone and created playlists so I can listen to it when not it wifi like when on a plane. If I turn on iTunes Match will I still have this music still downloaded? The online information suggests all my music will be replaced. Will I have to download it again??

What you have on your computer is your iTunes library, not an iTunes "account."  The account that is related to iTunes is your Apple ID, which you use to sign in to the iTunes Store and make purchases.  It is also used with iCloud.  iPods (that are not iPod touch) are associated with your iTunes library, not to your Apple ID.
So, I think you probably just need to set up (or update) automatic syncing for the iPod.  If it's not set up to sync those new songs, iTunes still syncs the iPod, but it syncs nothing
In iTunes, if the sidebar (along left side of iTunes window) is hidden, from the menu bar, under View, select Show Sidebar.  In the sidebar, the iPod appears under DEVICES, when it is connected.
Select the iPod in iTunes.  There is a row of buttons, starting with Summary.  Click on Music next to Summary.  This is the iPod's Music screen, where you tell iTunes how to sync songs to the iPod.
Check the box for Sync Music (if it's not already checked).  If your iTunes music library fits completely on the iPod, you can choose to sync Entire music library.  Otherwise, you can choose to sync Selected playlists, artists, albums, and genres.  On the lists below, checkmark the playlists, artists, albums, and/or genres that you want on the iPod.  When you click Apply, the songs from your selection sync to the iPod.
One convenient way to set this up (if you can't sync the entire iTunes music library) is to create a new playlist in your iTunes library.  Name it "iPod Songs" (or whatever you want).  Put ALL songs that you want on the iPod on this playlist, including those new songs.  Back on the iPod's Music screen in iTunes, select this playlist under Playlists.  Going forward, to update songs on the iPod, just update that playlist in your iTunes library (add/remove songs).  The next time you connect the iPod (or click the Sync button), iTunes automatically syncs the same changes to the iPod.

  • Can you create playlists from network shared iTunes libraries?

I have a file server in my basement running XP Pro SP2 which is set to share it's rather large iTunes Library. I also have a laptop which is set to look for shared libraries. That all works fine. I would LIKE to create playlists on the laptop FROM the shared library broadcasting from my fileserver. I would like to be able to sync my wife's iPod on the laptop utilizing the songs on the fileserver, also of course using the shared library and playlist created from them.
Now, I attempted to "Add Folder To Library" by pointing iTunes to the shared music directory on the fileserver... no dice. For whatever reason, iTunes only adds about one sixth of the music.
I also attempted to export the iTunes Library as a text file into a shared playlist directory and then import the playlist into the laptop. Also no dice.
I also read a prior post which suggests that you set iTunes to organize and add files to the iTunes library upon importing... but that effectively doubles the size of the library.
So I'm at a loss. There's got to be a way to do this thing. No?
    ~( ):>

Good point... perhaps mapping the drive will help. To make a long story longer, I added folders... one at a time like you suggested. One specific directory (which included a few hundred subdirectories) kept missing files. I'm not really sure why it was doing that. So, I determined a few of the files it was missing and drilled down and added the specific albums. Boom, they were added. It would however take me until 2035 to do that for every album, hence my post.
This is NOT a gigabit network I am running, so I wont know if the drive mapping does anything until... probably morning. iTunes is adding the files as I type. I'll post back the results though. Thanks.

  • How do I create playlists on my ATIV SE from music I synced?

I have synced my music from AMAZON MP3s, but I can't seem to make playlists on my ATIV SE. I changed from Android, which was very simple to create playlists on my phone.  I see the prompt to "save to playlist" but it's only one song each time.  Should I have created playlists on my laptop and downloaded them? This is the only problem I am having!!!!

Toshidkg We don't want you to have any problems with saving the playlist. When you select a song to add to a playlist, do you have an option to create a name for that playlist?

  • How to create playlist of party shuffle from CD?

I had moved all my gigabytes of songs into a DVD to free up some space. How do i create playlist of party shuffle from the DVD?
I guess the answer is NO. Any workaround?

You can't create a playlist within the shuffle itself. It has to be created in iTunes first, then synced across.

  • Creating playlists from a remote mac mini

I have most of my music ripped to a Mac Mini using iTunes. when I use my G5, i can see of the music and play it on the G5 (or any other Mac in the house). I'm sure i've done this next thing before, but I can't remember how i did it.
I want to create a playlist on the G5 which references songs off of the Mac Mini. I will want to both play that playlist on the G5, as well as burn CDs from that playlist on the G5.
    any help would be appreciated.

If you are using the sharing function of iTunes, this
will only make the songs available for playback. You
can't create playlists from shared music or copy the
    songs.

M - Is there a way to stop the sharing function ? I have the same problem but I do not need to share as my old computer is not in use, I deathorized it but I still can not create playlists.

  • Create playlists in itunes from purchased cd

Previous version of iTunes had a folder called 'music' (I think that was the name) at the top of all playlists.  This folder contained all music - purchased from iTunes and uploaded from CD.  It was easy to create a playlist by clicking on 'music', highlighting songs desired in playlist and dragging the songs to the playlist.  Now in the latest version the 'music' folder is gone from the playlist window and the playlists are gone from the 'songs' window.  Purchased is one of the playlists, so if you purchased all of your music from Apple, then no problem in making playlists.  However, if you purchased CDs, you cannot easily access this music to add to a playlist.  I just figured out how to go around the system - highlight all music in songs window, right click and create playlist titled 'all'.  Now I have ALL music in the 'plalist' window.  Is this an Apple Maps screw-up, or is this Apple making it difficult if you did not purchase the music from iTunes?  or, is it me missing something?  Appreciate any helpful feedback.

Press Ctrl-S to turn on the sidebar and Ctrl-B to turn on the menu bar. This should restore much of the familiar interface from the previous version...

  • HT1451 how do I create playlists now of my downloaded music.  Used to drag from "recently dowloaded" to playlist.  Can't even find the dang songs!!!!!

how do I create playlists now of my downloaded music.  Used to drag from "recently dowloaded" to playlist.  Can't even find the dang songs!!!!!

However, my troubleshooting issue is that I also want the songs in my concert playlists to go in order of how they were performed at the concerts.
    Give them a track number.
Each time I number them within the playlists the song's number also changes within the Library Music list.
And?  I'm not seeing the problem.
However, I can not figure out how to make true copy. I've already tried dragging the song to my desktop, then dragging the new copy back into iTunes. I've even tried renaming the duplicate copy and dragging it into iTunes. Why won't my iTunes make an individual duplicate copy of a song?
How do you have iTunes manage your music?  If you drag a song to the desktop it may just be moving the file to the desktop.
Command+R to reveal the file in Finder.  Command+D to duplicate the file in Finder. Drag the duplicate to iTunes to add the second copy.  Not that I totally understand where the issues lie and feel this is likely not the best remedy...

  • Create playlist from iPhone

Every time I create or add to a playlist on my iPhone, it makes a duplicate playlist once it syncs with my Macmini. Example; I'll have a playlist called "Alternative" and if I add to it from my iPhone all is fine until I sync. It will then create another playlist called "Alternative 1". That list will usually have a couple less songs in it but sometimes the same # of songs.
Also, my wife will create a playlist on the fly from her iPhone. This usually results in duplicates, etc. One of the so called "geniuses" at the Apple store told me that I should just create playlists from the Macmini an not from te iPhone. Well why in the heck does the iOS give you that capability if they suggest you not use it?  I wish Apple could figure out the whole sync thing. Too often I sync and lose a playlist or song, etc. Any thoughts out there?

    Hi, Hopperty63.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
I would need clarification on your question to provide a better answer.  However, if you want to create a playlist on your iPhone with music synced from your computer, see the information below.

  • Automatically create playlists from all albums

Is there a way to do this so that I can use list view and play one album at a time? I've looked on the list and searched on the web.
I know you can make album play lists easily, but only one at a time, by hand. I mean to simply get all them in one move.
I know that the grid view gives you the equivalent, but the grid view consumes so much memory that it turns the computer into an expensive CD player. The cost of looking at all those little pictures runs to about 200 megs of memory for me, and that creates a difficulty for me. (Strange as it seems, I work on this machine, too.)
In list view, iTunes does a great job, keeping memory use within 50 megs -- no problems there.
When I moved my music from one file server to another, I lost my playlists. I had the xml file that other programs can use, but not apparently not iTunes to re-create playlists. Now I face the trouble of rebuilding them hand. It would be trivial to rewrite that xml file to change all the file paths, but I did not see a way importing the entire collection of playlists.
It would seem to me that internally the iTunes database maintains an album by album list of songs (to show you in the grid view). One more step would loop through these and create playlists that show up in list view, eh?
My favorite music player is Linux-only -- Rhythmbox -- which just gives automatically artist and album playlists, and keeps within 60 megs of memory. I tried the new Mozilla offering, Songbird, which is only in beta and has its own rough spots, but it, too, automatically gives you artist and album playlists. I don't know about the Windows players.

    Barry

Why don't you use the Browser, you can filter your list view right down to a single album using it. Go to View>Show Browser to make it visible. Alternatively press the Command (⌘) and B keys together.

  • Creating Playlists From Folders...

I'm new to Itunes/Ipod... I recently purchased one, but before I did I created a folder on my hard drive containing subfolders with my mp3 collection and maticulously sorted them into genres like Oldies, techno, etc. So I have different folders containing different genres of music. I noticed that when I imported the folder containing subfolders with my music into Itunes I lost the folder structures. Is there any way I can create playlists based on what I had in those folders instead of me having to track down thousands of songs that I had in those folders and manually add them to playlists? Any help would be appreciated!

*Is there any way I can create playlists based on what I had in those folders*
    Create a new playlist.
Drag the folders of music from the HD onto the playlist in iTunes.
The songs will get added to the library and put into this playlist.

  • How can I have an album play ONLY when I choose it from my created playlist and NOT on my ipod's library?

I have a spoken word album on my Ipod Touch (4th gen) that I don't want playing when I shuffle through my library. I just want to play it from the created playlist I made for it. If I uncheck this album, would that work or would that only make me have to manually tell it to play each chapter from the playlist?
    Rebecca

I think it can't find the right or any artwork and ends up putting junk in there.
And can happen with artist and other tags.
probably fine with commercial media but otherwise....? I think you have to manaully go in and edit
I also don't like how it handles and stores non-Apple iTunes store content.

  • Does anyone know how to create playlists step by step?

I am currently using Musicmatch as I found Itunes a bit fiddly but happy to change back if this helps me - may need help with moving them across!
I really want to setup playlists but I'm having a big problem. I have set my IPOD to manual update.
When I setup a playlist, I set it up directly on my IPOD drive within MusicMatch, right click new playlist (not in the playlist library within Musicmatch then sync them).
I thought doing this would mean my IPOD would see it and I wouldn't have to sync my IPOD each time when I load it up to the PC - then I and drag and drop songs to the IPOD playlist but they never appear in the new playlist and just duplicate in my first playlist (which has all my songs in it)- I end up with 2 of everything.
I read on my instructions that I can create playlists without a PC so directly on my IPOD I presume) by navigating to the song using the wheel then selecting the song till it flashes. When I try to select playlists from my menu - playlist is never there.
Am I being stupid? I have Win XP with 4th gen IPOD - haven't updated any software - do I need to do that?
Please help - I keep running out of battery by jumping around to the songs I want to hear! I don't want to put anymore on there now as its already a nightmare getting through the 600 songs!

There is no such thing as an international iTunes account.
If the iTS is available to a particular country and you qualify - address and credit card from that country - you can open an iTS account and shop from the selecton available to that store.

  • Can't get itunes to create playlist using songs on ipod

How do I integrate the songs on my ipod with the itunes on my new computer without losing my downloads? I successfully authorized my new computer (Windows XP) for my itunes account. When I access my account on the new computer it shows all the songs that are on my ipod (downloaded from old computer) but they are in faint print and I cannot play them or create playlists. Every time I log on, it asks me if I want to copy the songs from the new computer onto the ipod. I tried this once and it wiped out all my other songs. Luckily, I still had the old computer and was able to retrieve my music.

You need to connect the iPod to the original computer. Open Preferences and select the iPod tab. Choose "manually manage songs and playslists."
You need to do it on the computer you want to manually manage songs on, not the original computer.
You will now be able to create the playlists on another computer.
As stated abive, you will hav to set this on teh new computer, not the original.
Also, you don't even need an iPod conected to create or manange playlists on the computer.
If you want to create and manage playlists on the iPod you obviously will need to connect it to a computer.
But doing this only on the iPod is not a good idea because if theiPod crashes, you lose them.
Create them in iTunes and sync them to the iPod.
