Creating previews in LR3

Hi,
Yesterday I installed LR3 on my Mac (10.6). I then imported my entire library and LR3 joyfully started creating previews. Since LR still uses only 2 cores apparently (nobody at Adobe has passed the exam on concurrent programming yet it seems), I got a very slowly progressing taskbar. After a couple of hours I had to quit Lightroom to do some 'serious' work (in LR2 of course). When I started LR3 again, it did not progress with creating previews anymore. Anyone knows how to 'force' LR3 into creating previews again?
Thx,
Tom

Hi Dorin,
Found it. Thanks!

  • Bridge CS6 not creating preview extractions for .mp4, .mov .wmv or .avi

    In all versions up to now when I would cache my folders with video files they would create preview extractions so that I could scroll through the video in the Preview Pane.
    The only files that are doing this now are the .flv files (which ironically do not create a thumnail image, and never have in Bridge, but that's another topic altogether.)
    I looked through all the preferences and I don't see a way to turn preview extractions on or off.
    How do I "force" Bridge to create the previews and why did it not do it automatically like all previous versions have?
    Thank you!
    I have a brand 2 month old top of the line iMac with all the latest software and plenty of free space. This is definitely an issue w Bridge, not my computer.

    I was having an issue very similar to this. I tested it on CC, CS6 and both did the same thing. No previews and if i tried to purge the cache, it would stop responding all together. Then I noticed I had an eps file with no file extention. I went ahead and removed it from the folder and now everything works like it should. If the above option of purging does not work, try to remove the files and see if one of them is an issue.

  • Can anyone suggest why bridge cc stopped creating previews?

    I was reviewing around 5,000 photos over the weekend, and everything went fine right up until late on Sunday when bridge just stopped creating previews. It's not the end of the world, as it creates it pretty fast when I click on the photo, but it is annoying.
    You can see on the screenshot below, that it's creating 100% previews for about half of this folder, and then it's created none after this. Not in this folder and not in any others either. It also won't update any previews after I've done work in Camera Raw.
    I've tried purging the cache, looking for updates, and restarting the machine - none of which has helped.
    Anyone else have any suggestions?
    Machine: Windows 7, Dual Xeon, 64GB RAM, 160GB of space left on scratch/cache disk array - exibiting no other faults.

    Some have the black border around to indicate that no preview has been created, and even when I manually click on them a preview is created and discarded. The thumbnails are not updated to reflect any editing changes either - as the nef and jpgs should actualy be the same.
    I do occasionally get a message that there's no space on that drive to export thumbnails, but there's 1.6 TB free on there at the moment!

  • Aperture not creating previews - one reason

    I've been investigating why Aperture is failing to create previews. In my system it will only create previews for a specific set of images and not matter what I do it's always the same images.
    So I looked at the difference between the images it would create previews for and the image it would not. The difference I found was that the images which Aperture would not create previews for no longer had their import directories.
    Aperture appears to work by creating these directories when you import the images. They are stored in the project you import into. Aperture stores the image previews in these directories so if they are missing Aperture appears to silently fail on creating the preview.
    How I think I lost mine was that I imported a large number of images into a project and then moved them to other projects as I sorted through them. Aperture does NOT move the import directories to the new projects with the images.
    I deleted the original project and because it still contained the import directories for the images, I can now no longer create previews for those images.
    The only solution I can think of to fix this is to re-import all the images which have lost their import directories, this time being more careful to not delete the projects.
    Does anyone have any ideas on ways that these directories (and the files within them) can be re-created (without importing) ?
    ciao
    Derek

    What was happening to me was this:
    a. import images into project (a).
    b. Create a new empty project (b).
    c. Move images from project (a) to project (b).
    d. Delete project (a).
    e. Open package contents of the Aperture library.
    f. Check project (b) and there is no *.apimportgroup directory. Hence nowhere for Aperture to put the previews.
    Currently I have exported all my images and am re-importing. Its the only way I can think of to re-create the *.apimportgroup directories.
    Rule of thumb: if you intent to delete a project, check for *.apimportgroup directories first. I have not tried to manually copy them to other projects so I don't know if that would get around this.

  • Aperture hangs creating previews

    Since installing Leopard (a clean install then Migration Assistant to get my user across) I haven't been able to view slideshows, because Aperture hangs when it tries to create previews. The "Rendering previews for slideshow..." popup appears and it never moves. Clicking "Cancel" has no effect - I have to quit Aperture from the Dock.
    As soon as I try to render the previews (and before I quit Aperture) the following message appears in the System log (/var/log/system.log):
    Nov 26 09:34:34 mbp17 Aperture[552]: * -[NSLock unlock]: lock (<NSLock: 0x22f174e0> '(null)') unlocked from thread which did not lock it
    Nov 26 09:34:34 mbp17 Aperture[552]: * Break on _NSLockError() to debug.
    And on at least one occasion the following as well:
    Nov 26 09:35:36 mbp17 Aperture[552]: * -[NSLock dealloc]: lock (<NSLock: 0x22f174e0> '(null)') deallocated while still in use
    Nov 26 09:35:36 mbp17 Aperture[552]: * Break on _NSLockError() to debug.
    I've tried all the obvious things, including removing preferences (plus removing all preferences, not just Aperture preferences), starting with a new Aperture library, reinstalling Aperture, and the only thing that worked was creating a new user that did nothing except Aperture. So it's some combination of Aperture, Leopard, and my user account.
    Apple support was no help at all. They suggested it was probably a user preference somewhere and told me to recreate my user from scratch. That's a huge job, so I resisted it for a long time. But eventually I decided to bite the bullet and did so. It took many hours to complete the task. I tried it again immediately after recreating the user and it worked, but when I got everything else back working again such as Mail, calendar etc, I found it was failing again. This was not migrating the user, either, it was reinstalling everything and recreating preferences (with few exceptions - I copied over ~/Library/Mail, for example).
    This is extremely annoying! Anyone else seen anything similar?

    hi, allen
    have you repaired permissions in safe mode and then restart osx and aperture?

  • Firefox no longer creates previews for videos and music posted on my Facebook Timeline

    after its latests update to the Version 32, Firefox no longer creates previews for videos and music posted on my Facebook Timeline. in earlier Firefox versions there was no such problem. it started to happen exactly after its update, and it still works perfectly well in Chrome and other browsers.

    to make it clear, just look at the picture attached, which describes the process of posting the same video on my Facebook Timeline in Firefox and in Chrome:

  • Illustrator 18.1 - Unable to create preview

    After upgrading to Illustrator 18.1 when I open a file I get an error "Unable to create preview" and all the artwork on the page is gone. I can see it in outline view, but not in preview mode.

    Hi Aneta G.,
    the ruler origin has changed with CS5.
    Maybe this can help a little to your understanding:
    // ArtboardsAddInEachQuadrant_CS5.jsx
    // regards pixxxelschubser
    var AB_1 = activeDocument.artboards.add([0,50,200,0]);
    AB_1.name = 'first quadrant';
    var AB_2 = activeDocument.artboards.add([-200,50,0,0]);
    AB_2.name = 'second quadrant';
    var AB_3 = activeDocument.artboards.add([-200,0,0,-50]);
    AB_3.name = 'third quadrant';
    var AB_4 = activeDocument.artboards.add([0,0,200,-50]);
    AB_4.name = 'fourth quadrant';
    Have fun

  • Installing Lightroom 5 for first time. Chose standard previews of the 100,000+ photos on removable hard drive. Lightroom stopped creating previews after the first 10,000 or so pictures. Don't see how to start it moving forward again. Thanks!

    I think I did everything correctly. Moved pictures to the external drive as per Microsoft's instructions for Windows 8. All worked fine. Everything else in Lightroom seems to work fine. However, it just stopped creating standard size previews.

    Glad you had success. You can check to see how many preview files have been built by checking the Lightroom 5 Catalog Previews.lrdata folder with File Explorer:
    /Users/[user name]/Pictures/Lightroom/Lightroom 5 Catalog Previews.lrdata
    Right-click on the folder and select 'Properties.' Next to 'Contains' will be the file count representing the number of built previews. It should be the same as the number of pictures (100,000) or slightly more.
    Creating previews for 100,000 image files will take a long time! My Windows 7 i7-860 processor system with 21 mp Canon 5D MKII raw files takes about 3 seconds to build one standard preview. Using this number for 100,000 previews:
    100,000 x 3 seconds = 300,000 sec. = 5,000 min. = 83 hours = 3.5 days!

  • Slideshow from selected images in folder - LR3 creates previews of all images

    I select a number of images in a folder in the Library module and go to the Slideshow module. When I run the slideshow LR3 generates previews of all of the images in the relevant folder - rather than merely those for the images I have selected.
    I'm running LR3.2RC in Win 7 64 bit. The same happened with LR3 itself. My recollection (which may be faulty) was that this worked as I would have expected in LR2 (in other words, previews were generated only for the selected images in the folder).
    (I know I could add the selected images to a collection but I don't always necessarily wish to do that.)
    Stephen

    Hi Stephen
    In Slideshow module, on the toolbar you can click on the dropdown options against Use:
    Make sure you check selected items and not all filmstrip items.
    If you can’t see the toolbar above the filmstrip press T and T again to hide it.

  • Fails to create preview and smart preview

    Hi, I am using MacBook (late 2008) OS X 10.9.2 and recently upgraded to Lightroom 5.3 from Lightroom 4. After a while, some photo started to show exclamation mark at the right hand corner of the photo (*.CR2 raw files in NAS) in grid view. When I click on the exclamation mark, it shows a dialog with following message; "Lightroom has encountered problems reading this photo". So, I moved previews.lrdata, which is about 9GB, to the trash and restarted the Lightroom 5, expecting Lightroom 5 to create a new previews.lrdata. However, it won't create any preview at all. Anyone else having same kind of problem?
    exclamation mark at the top right hand corner of the photos in grid view.
    size of Previews.lrdata file stops at 152KB.

    Jao, thanks for the quick response! I tried what you have said before reading your post and was able to solve this. The cause was exactly what you have pointed out and I changed connection protocol from cifs to smb. Thank you very much for suggestion

  • My 3.4.5 has ~ 35000 jpg masters.  I have set aperture not to create previews on import and have ensured "maintain previews" is not ticked.  Every time I start aperture it insists on creating previews for ~ 4300 images. Why?

    Having had the previews created I selected all photos and "delete previews".  It did this quickly and no more previews being created.  Once aperture is closed and then re-opened aperture immediately sets about creating the previews for the same photos.  I don't understand why this should be happening.
    This is occuring on my Mackbook Air (Aug 2012) which has 256 GB storage. I am fast running out of space as I am using "Managed Masters".  I intend to make the masters referenced by relocating them to an external HDD but before doing this would like to clear up this problem first. I keep my Vault on the external HDD and have Time Machine and Time Capsule.  When I have relocated the masters to the external HDD I intend that TM backs the external HDD to the TC.  I tink that I will use the second partition on the external HDD for Carbon Copy Cloner to back up the Mackbook Air.
    Any help or advice warmly welcomed.

    Frank
    Many thanks for your input.
    Following your advice I have selected all the projects individually and checked the status of Mantain Previews.  Some were indeed marked up for Mantail Preview so I have unmarked them.
    I have also selected Photos and deleted  previews and also repeated this for My Projects.
    Checking the Get Info for the Preview folder in Aperture Library in Finder this now tells me that I have zero bytes for 564 items.
    Close and then reopen Aperture and it regenerates these564 previews in the blink of an eye.  I haven't been able to locate these photos yet.  I know there are about 120 in facebook and 10 in photostream but dont know where the rest are.
    It seems the issue is not with Aperture but with myself and not understanding Aperture sufficiently well
    Do you see the problem this way?

  • Create previews of video clips with multiple thumbnail and export in html?

    Hi all!
    I am trying to make a list of the videos that i have shot with my digital camera....my 1Tb is almost full, so you can understand that is not that easy as looking into a folder with the big thumbnails
    this is the expectation: to find an app that can
    -create a preview of each video (qt, mov, m4v, wmv, avi, rm, etc)
    -create few frames that shows the content of the video
    -export the list of movies as web page, with the title of the video and the snapshot for each of them
    Do you know if there is any way to achieve this result, without making manually everything?
    I've found a software on pc, that i can use with parallels, but it takes just 1 shot of the video, and not multiple, with the result that is hard to get what is in the video, especially when the video is 10-15 min long, and the name doesn't help to recall what was happening in that video
    Is there a way to achieve these results with just the apps available on the OS or is there an external sofware to do that?
    thanks!

    This is how i resolved:
    I use a software called screen grabber, that reads video files and makes a sheet with previews
    then i use thumbsplus on parallels to load these sheets and create an html page with the sheets and thumbnails.
    Takes some time, is kinda cumbersome, but this gives me nice html pages with previews taht ar clickable (so you can see the full size sheet with the video preview).
    Maybe someone else will stumble on the same problem that i had and find something better than my solution

  • Why does bridge constantly re-create previews?

    My understanding is that Bridge generates previews and stores them in the cache.  However, it seems to forget it created the previews when I shut down then boot up the next day, so directories that I visited the day before still get the "XXX preview extractions" notice down in the bottom left and the interface is sluggish while that is going on.
    I have tried purging the cache, compacting the cache, and putting the cache size on maximum.  Bridge still constantly generates previews for items that should already be in the cache.  I have "Keep 100% Previews in Cache" checked, so it shouldn't be doing that, correct?
    How do I fix this problem?  It makes Bridge even more sluggish than it already is...
    Thanks,
    rgames

    Definitely seeing this myself. Not sure what process is doing it, but it would have to be changing the IDs of each item in Launchpad on each relaunch of the "Dock" process (since the whole thing is controlled by an SQL Lite database in your ~/Library/Application Support/Dock folder). It could be looking at the last "something'd" date and ordering them based on that.
    Crazy idea, maybe try write-protecting that database after everything is as you'd want it? Trouble is, next time you download or install an app that Launchpad would want to add, you'd need to un-write-protect it, add the app, then re-write-protect it. Scriptable, sure, but not "It just works". And even then it might not like the database not being modifyable and just crash or act oddly.
    I haven't given it much effort as my primary app launch method is still Spotlight. If you want your apps to stay in order, just drag your Applications folder back to your dock and use it just like you did in [Snow] Leopard, as they'll stay in the sort order you set it there. Or submit a bug report (http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html) and hope they fix it in a future release. Finally, for those who want to use Launchpad and fix it themselves, may I suggest this:
    Get your apps in the order you want them
    Back up the database in ~/Library/Application\ Support/Dock to somewhere
    Write a simple bash or Apple script that kills the Dock, copies that archived database where everything is in the correct order to its "live" location, then restarts the Dock
    Set said script to run on boot by adding it to your Startup Items (Accounts in System Preferences)
    Profit?
    Of course, anytime you make an edit to what's in Launchpad or the order of Launchpad, you'd need to remember to re-backup your database so this script wouldn't overwrite your edits the next time you rebooted.
    *The above idea has not been tested and merely should work given that Mac OS is nearly UNIX and as such usually behaves rationally

  • LR 4 on Windows 8 - Cannot create preview thumbnail when exporting?

    I thought I had this figured out but it appears to occur somewhat randomly. Since upgrading to Windows 8 when I export files that I have imported from Canon raw .CR2 for some files it gives an error that "the file could not be written" and lists the original source .CR2 file name. It does not do it everytime but once it happens it happens everytime for that file. When exporting 10 JPG files for example only 3 of them may have this issue. The file still exports and creates the JPG file and the only issue with the exported file appears to be that it did not create the preview thumbnail.
    I have tried importing the files into new catalogs, writing to different folders etc but it still happens. Any ideas?

    Ok, after lots of attempts to recreate I can do it like this:
    Export as JPG to hard drive and select 'limit file size' option and give any size smaller than the full 100% quality JPG would normally create. Using any other options to limit file size such as quality < 100 or resize long edge to 1024 completes successfully.
    Can someone else confirm this on Windows 8 with LR 4.2, it only takes a single file?

  • Create preview for eps file

    Hi all,
    Does anyone have a magic idea how to create a proxy for EPS files?
    I only want a thumbnail and/or preview of such files.
    Would it be possible to create some script, that could run when the file is imported?
    Thanks for any idea.
