Creating Problems by dragging folder?

I have all of my library on an external HDD "R",
All of my music has been setup so far on this drive using my laptop.
This setup has been used for work and weekends at home using AE and my home theater and PC desktop speakers. All has worked OK
I am now home for the summer and would like my latpop to be a bit more portable and not have the external USB drive hooked up to it.
If I open ITunes on my desktop and drag the ITunes folder from "R" to the blank library window in ITunes, this will load all of the music to the desktop(I don't care about moving playlists etc. just the music.
I can then "share the music with the laptop.
Am I creating some unforseen problems down the road?
If I add more music during the summer, I will move the USB drive to the laptop and not add from the desktop.
I understand that I will have to update the library on the desktop if I am going to share the new music.
Thanks for any input.
Bob

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Yes you can do that. Just drag the folder into the left hand Source pane in the iPhoto window just above the bottom of the window (not on any other icon in the pane). That will create an album and roll each with the same name as the folder that was dragged.
Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Creating Album by dragging folder from Finder

I was told in the help documentation that I could drag a folder of photos into iPhoto and create an album of that same name. But it seems that I am unable to do this. The file I drag won't "stick" to iPhoto. Is this not possible, afterall?
The reason I want to do this, is to save time in organizing my photos according to Album name, not date.
    Thanks!
    [From the help documentation]
Did You Know?—Making an Album From a Folder of Photos
You can also create an album by dragging a folder of photos from the Finder into the
Source list, in the top-left corner of your iPhoto window. iPhoto creates an album
with the folder's name and imports all the photos in the folder into your photo
    library.

  • Problem creating items in a folder owned by another user

    Hi
Iam getting an exception when i try to create a folder owned (or shall i say) created by another user.Let me explain what iam doing :
    1. I have created a folder "INPRISE" under "/home".I have
created an ACL "MyAcl" having group INPRISEGROUP
as the ACE having all permissions.I have set the ACL "MyAcl" on the folder "INPRISE".
    2. I have created two users i1 and i2
and placed them in the group INPRISEGROUP .Both these users have a link under thei home folder to "INPRISE" folder(achieved by using and addItem()).
    3. I could successfully login as i1 and create a folder "WebApps" under "INPRISE" and upload a document "A.txt" under "WebApps".
4.But when i log in as "i2" and try to create a document "B.txt" under "WebApps" which was created by user "i1" i get the following exception :

Note : since iam still experimenting with the code please ignore any irrelevant/wrong commenting.Iam using method "CreateDealFolder()" to create the folder "INPRISE" and "CreateUser()" to create users "i1","i2"

Iam not able to set the main folder's (i.e INPRISE) acl (MyAcl) on the subfolder "MyFolder" because the owner of MyAcl is "system" whereas the owner of MyFolder is user "i1" .Which is the best way of solving these ownership issue which iam running into ? I want to be able to create different folders ,assign a group of uers to each of the folders who can create as well as modify, delete each other's folders/documents (as i have mentioned in my first post in this thread) ?

  • How can I create a new documents folder

Anyone know how I can create a new documents folder in my home folder? I accidently deleted it. Nothing was in it, so I don't need to recover it. I just want a new empty documents folder.
Actually, never mind. I solved the problem myself.
At first I created a folder in the sidebar, and it didn't have the documents icon on it. I just solved the problem by deleting that icon, then creating a new folder in the main window, naming it "documents", and then the documents icon appeared. Then I dragged it to the sidebar and it created a copy there.

My mistake. I was able to create a new documents folder without any throuble.

  • Problem with Drag & Drop and multiselection in tables

    Hi,
we have a problem concerning drag and drop and multiselection in tables. It is not possible to drag a multiselection of table rows, as the selection event is recognized or handled before the drag event. So before the drag starts, the selection will be changed and only a single row is selected at the position where you started the drag with a mouse click.
There was also a java bug with the id 4521075 regarding this problem a couple of years ago. See http://bugs.sun.com/bugdatabase/view_bug.do?bug_id=4521075.
This bug has been resolved but in our application we have not enabled drag by setting setDragEnabled(true) on the table as we have an own implementation of a DragSource (which is the table component), and a DragGestureRecognizer to control mimetype and data to be dragged.
So my question is: Is there any solution for this case without calling setDragEnabled(true) on the table? Or is it possible to enable drag on the table and override some method where the drag recognition happens and the transferable object is created?
    Thanks,

    Thanks for reply,
    Steps to reproduce the problem:
    1) user clicks the ascending sorting icon in the table(the button get disabled after sorting the table).
    2) After sorting user drag and drop some row over another row.
    3) Now the table is no longer sorted.
    4) If user again wants to sort the table now, he cannot do it because the sorting button is still disabled.
So I want the user to sort the table again, without refreshing the page
    Thanks and Regards,

  • Problem in delete folder

Please don't refer me to the innumeras delete folder solutions available in the SDN. None of them has come to my help.
I need to delete a folder. Well, codes are available everywhere, I run it, it successfully deletes the folder specified.
But the requirement is, I need to make a zip of the folder, then I'll delete the original folder. I am pasting the code here. The zip part is working, the delete part is not! if you comment the line calling zip, it deletes the folder, but after zipping, it cannot delete.
Is there some lock present? How to check and remove that? Please help.

    Thanks it worked.
The problem was, the folder I was trying to delete had .classpath, .project, .websettings files. It was encountering problem to delete these files because it internally also uses files of same name.
May be that was the reason.
I tried with any other folder, it worked.

  • Creating a password protected folder

Hi everyone, I hope someone can help me with a little problem I can't seem to resolve, here goes................
I Have a Macbook for home use and a PC that I have to use at work. I have recently purchased a 128 MB keyfob USB drive for using to transfer files I make at home to my workplace PC. The device came with no driver CD as it stated on the box that it was plug&play for both PC & Mac. No security software was supplied with the device nor is there any security download available from the manufacturers website that is OS X compatible ( only XP compatible ).
Although I have XP running on my Mac via Bootcamp I haven't set it up to transfer files between the OS X & XP partitions.
Now I'm known for being a bit clumsy and have lost the odd set of keys or wallet in my time, so I'd like to make a secure password protected folder that I can copy onto the USB drive to dump files into so in the likely event of me losing the keyfob at least I'll know that sensitive files would have some level of protection.
I created a secure "locked" folder in my keychain protected home folder but when I dumped that folder onto the USB drive it appeared as unlocked and when I then subsequently connected the drive to my neighbours PC the folder in question was openly readable.
Does anyone out there in MacLand know of a fix-around for this little problem that doesn't involve to much £,$,yen,etc.....
Thanks for your time and hope you can help
    Cheers

The difficulty here is that the folder has to cross Platforms. It can easily be secured on the Mac and I'm sure on XP. However both...
My best suggestion is to google something like 'lock folder cross platform' It throws up several suggestions.

  • Problem with public folder initialization on exchange load generator 2010

    hi,
we need to make some stress charge for a migration between 2010 and 2013. Before that we need to populate our exchange 2010 lab with full mailbox and public folders. So we tried Exchange load generator 2010 for this task ( initialization only).
Loadgen did well for the mailbox but we have some problems with the public folders. we have an empty public folder database and the user we run loadgen with has organization admin and public folder management right. the problem is that when we run this command
(for initializing public folder only, mailbox's done) :
    loadgencmd.exe /p /c config.xml /add trace.log
IT create only one public folder with the user we run loadgen with, and 5-8 objects inside. We need that It create a public folder for each users it created before. Maybe we do not understand loadgen
    correctly...

    I found my solution :
customize the <PublicStoreProfile> section in the configuration file as follows:
     <PublicStoreProfile>
        <MessageFiles />
        <TopLevelFolderCount>1</TopLevelFolderCount>
        <NonTopLevelFolderCount>1</NonTopLevelFolderCount>
        <MinimumFolderDepth>1</MinimumFolderDepth>
        <AverageFolderDepth>2</AverageFolderDepth>
        <MaximumFolderDepth>3</MaximumFolderDepth>
        <MinimumMessageCount>5</MinimumMessageCount>
        <AverageMessageCount>10</AverageMessageCount>
        <MaximumMessageCount>15</MaximumMessageCount>
        <UseOrdinalFolderName>false</UseOrdinalFolderName>
      </PublicStoreProfile>
Simply put differents values for each variables.

  • Creating playlists by dragging folders: possible?

    Hi
I'm new to itunes, iphone, mac, etc etc... I'm very very sorry if this has been brought up, but I can't find any threats answering this question. Maybe I'm not searching correctly. If anyone can help, I would appreciate it.
I have been I avoiding iTunes because I can't figure out a way to just drag folders of music to create/upload music to my iPhone (or iPod) automatically. This was so easy with winamp, but does not seem to be possible in iTunes (ok, i can manually create playlists, then drag songs in them, but that is a lot of hassle). This is important to me because I like to listen to whole albums from the beginning to the end (am I oldfashioned?), and not search by artist (does not work for compilations by many artists) or albums (I remember albums by artist names). It is mystery to me why iTunes does not support drag/drop to create playlists by folder name (I have all my music organized by artist - album - year).
Am I missing something? Does iTunes actually support this? Are there any 3rd party apps? Please help.
    Thank you

    kk2558 wrote:
I could just drag a whole folder, and it automatically created a playlist with the same title as the folder name (i.e. artist - album). Is this possible in iTunes?
As Chris said above, yes. In fact, I don't think you even need to make an empty playlist. If I recall correctly, you just drag the folder to the playlist area in iTunes. I believe it uses the folder name for the playlist name but, if it doesn't that's easily changed.

  • Error Code 0x80070005 "Windows was unable to create a required installation folder" when trying to upgrade XP to Windows

While trying to upgrade Windows XP to Windows 7 in Boot Camp after (performing a satisfactory compatibility check) the process aborted with error message "Windows was unable to create a required installation folder." Do I need to have a full version Windows 7 disk instead of the Upgrade version?  Any other ideas??

Your suggestion to do Bing/Google search helped. It turns out there was interference from Boot Camp Services. I found two work-arounds that others had used that were stated to have worked. One was to temporarily delete Boot Camp Services and then reinstall it after the XP to 7 update, the other was to create a DVD of the downloaded installer files created by the updater and use the startup application from that DVD.
I had previously tried to update XP in a Parallel Virtual Machine but but XP didn't recognise the Updater disk as a DVD. That led me to try updating in BootCamp. I decided to try using Parallels again and was able to fix the device problem and update t&. I am going to keep Windows XP in the BootCamp partition as an alternate "machine". When I update to Lion I'll keep that partitition since BootCamp 4 that comes with Lion does not support XP.

  • Create a New Bookmark Folder and it Crashes Safari AND OSX !

This has happened to me many time and is extremely frustrating. When I create a new bookmark folder I will get a pinwheel and then all my applications applications lock up and I have to reboot the computer to regain control. I can move the mouse around, but even force quitting safari does not fix unlock the OS, even as extremely difficult it is to make it do that.
This used to happen to me on my old 2007 macbook and I was frustrated with it and its slow speed so I upgraded to a new $2000 iMac i5 and have only had it for a few weeks and it is happening on this new computer as well !!
The Safari version is 5.0.2 (6533.18.5)
What is going on here? This is not acceptable!

    HI,
If Safari is crashing, post a crash report so we can try and help.
If Safari has just crashed, press the Report button on the CrashReporter dialog box to view the crash information.
Now copy/paste the entire contents of the Crash Reporter window into your reply here. If the crash report dialog does not appear or the crash is hard to reproduce, crash logs can be retrieved from the ~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter> folder.

If you migrated files from the MacBook to the iMac, that could be part of the problem.

Third party unsupported Safari add-ons can cause performance issues with Safari. If you had any installed on the MacBook and copied files over, you may have brought the same problem over to the iMac. Post a crash report ...

  • How to stop music folder from being created when changing media folder

When I try to change the media folder location, a new "music" folder is created - how do I stop this from happening (I already have a music folder that I want it to default to, but when I try to select it, it creates another music sub folder)
This is a new issue - I have been using itunes for years without ever having this problem...

That's how itunes 9 works, now. The top-level folder is considered the "Media" folder and there are music, podcast, movie, audiobook, etc subfolders.
Which is better in a way, since before itunes 9, everything was dumped in a music folder, even audiobooks that weren't music.

  • System Image Utility "Create" problem

We have a new Xserve that we're finally going to be available to use for Open Directory/Net Boot/Net Install/etc in our coporate network. So, this is all new to me but I'm trying to make a Net Install image to export to the server.
My G5 workstation (Mac OS X 10.4.6, but the imaged drive has 10.4.5) has two hard drives, one of which has our corporate image of software installed on it, "clean". The other hard drive is my own with lots of extra software and customization. I'm trying to use the System Image Utility (v. 10.4.4 (251)) to create an image. I am an administrator user on my computer. After configuring all the appropriate settings, I push the "Create" button and it appears to start working, prompts me for a location to save the actual image itself, creates a folder with the default name and then nothing happens. The spinning gear would seem to indicate that the System Image Utility is doing something, but the "Create" button continues to throb blue. I can click "Create" again and another folder is created when I'm promted to save the image and it continues to remain empty. All I can do is click "Cancel" and start over.
I was quite frustrated until I logged into my computer as the local administrator user (this user is employed when we're configuring a workstation for the first time to give it the correct file sharing name and bind it to the Active Directory). Creating an image works just find while I'm logged in as the local administrator. (At least as far as creating/exporting the image, getting Net Boot to turn on the Xserve is proving a challenge.)
So, is there something preventing network administrator users from creating images? I'd really rather have my own e-mail open and running as well as my own bookmarks while I'm working on a project like this, but it doesn't seem possible. Any tips would be appreciated.
    -Doug

After configuring all the appropriate settings, I
push the "Create" button and it appears to start
working, prompts me for a location to save the actual
image itself, creates a folder with the default name
    and then nothing happens.
ok here's the deal: i created a folder in my OSX server home directory labelled "images" and keep our multiple images there. although you CAN have your images on other drives or on the network, that would take a LOOOOOOOONG time to do the data transfer to the invisible netboot folder on your server. my advice: keep local copies of all images. save a ton of time for yourself, eh?
then, when it's time to use the system image suntility to load up an image, i go to that same location each time, call it up and have the app set to the prefs i want or need. i'm on 10.4.7 server and have had no problem using the software.
so try using images locally and then, if that doesn't work, upgrade to 10.4.7

next step, I make <persistEntity> binding to the <submit button> and the parameters(entity) is

    I beg your help.
    Thanks. and very very thanks.

    Hi,
I am not an expert in TopLink, but it appears to me that the TopLink model is causes your problems not ADF. There is a TopLink forum here on OTN that could give you a helping hand on this issue.
The following tutorial explains the use of TopLink in ADF

  • When I create a new bookmark folder, the name of an existing folder is frequently changed to the anme of the new one, why?

Frequently when I create a new bookmark folder the name of an already existing unrelated folder is also changed to the same name as the new one being created. Sometimes if I am creating the new folder in "Bookmarks Menu" the existing folder who's name is changed is also in the "Bookmarks Menu". But sometimes it will be in the "Bookmarks Toolbar".
This is quite frustrating since the purpose of naming them is to identify them.

This can be a problem with the file places.sqlite that stores the bookmarks and the history.
