Creating PS file with Adobe PDF very slow

Hallo Framers,
I use FrameMaker 7.1 and Distiller 8.1.3 under Windows XP.
As recommended in many posts on this forum, I have set Adobe PDF as my default printer. I use the Print To File setting and process the resulting PS with Distiller. However it is S-L-O-W. Making the PS of a 1250-page document takes less than 2 minutes when I use the driver of my PS printer (Xerox WorkCentre 7132PS), and 48 minutes using the Adobe PDF driver. The PS and PDF files are about the same size (900MB PS, 14MB PDF) and the appearance and links seem to be good in both.
I know that Tagged PDF can be slow, but I have switched that off in Format > Document > PDF Setup > Tags. Are there any other settings where I can speed up the Adobe PDF?

Since my name has been used in vain here at least a few times ...
(1)     My presentation from 2002 is somewhat dated. Acrobat 5 is four releases back from Acrobat 9, the current release. Likewise, the current FrameMaker at that time was FrameMaker 7.0, also four releases back from the current FrameMaker 9 (I am counting 7.1 and 7.2 as releases). Some of the recommendations from that 2002 still make sense and apply, others don't.
(2)     For example, there is the issue of the spooling settings for the Advanced tab of the Adobe PDF PostScript Printer Driver Instance. Ideally, this should be set to Start printing after last page is spooled. But if you set that option for that particular printer instance under Windows Vista or Windows 7, you break Acrobat (it is a security “feature” added by Microsoft). Leave the setting at the default of Start printing immediately if you are using Windows Vista or Windows 7 (which of course implies that you must have Acrobat 8 or Acrobat 9).
(3)     The glacial speed issue is really associated with the fact that there are a number of “layers” of code interpreting each of the calls made by FrameMaker to Windows GDI to pass not only graphics to the driver to be converted to PDF, but many fragments of PostScript for purposes of providing support for reflow, structure, links, etc. If you turn off those features you really don't need for a particular publication, you will likely see significant performance improvements. Alternatively, something that essentially saves just to file without going through the driver plug-in directly feeding the Distiller may also cut the overhead.
(4)     There is no new printer driver dated from 2002 or otherwise on the Adobe website. I assume the reference is to the Adobe Universal PostScript Windows Driver Installer 1.0.6 dating back to 5/23/2002. First thing to know about this “installer” is that it won't run properly and may crash on Windows Vista and Windows 7 32-bit systems and won't run at all on 64-bit Windows systems. It is a 16-bit installer application that was originally designed for Windows'95 and Windows'98. The second and most important thing to understand is that it doesn't install any new driver on any OS versions other than Windows'9X, Windows ME, and Windows NT 4.0. For Windows 2000 and XP, it uses the existing Windows PSCRIPT5 driver and associates that with a PPD file to create a PostScript printer driver instance. Again, it installs nothing new. What you can do with this is to create a new PostScript printer driver instance using the Distiller PPD and set it to print to FILE: using that to create PostScript from FrameMaker and then funnel either manually or via a “watched folder” to the Distiller for creation of PDF from the PostScript.

In Adobe Captivate, there is a "PDF export" checkbox available when you publish your project.
It checked the box, and the project pulication created a file with a PDF extension.. but it's actually a video. Shouldn't it export the slides as a proper PDF document ?

Thanks for the quick answer. I did not know about interactive PDFs..
I just found how to export as a Word document. I would have expected to find that option in "Publish" or "Export", not "Print".. Anyway, I now have what I needed

  • How do I edit a PDF file with Adobe PDF Pack?

How do I edit a PDF file with Adobe PDF Pack?

Well, you don't. Editing a PDF is a difficult and fraught business even with the most expensive software.
But PDF Pack lets you export to Word; then often you can edit in Word. Now you can make a new PDF. It might look like the original, or it might not. If small changes matter you might be out of luck. ON NO ACCOUNT USE THIS FOR GOVERNMENT FORMS.

  • Can I rearrange pages when I merge files with Adobe PDF Pack?

    Hi
Have purchased PDF pack as an upgrade, but not happy with what it does as doesn't seem to be any better than what I had before
When you merge documents there doesn't appear to be any tool to rearrange the order or to delete any pages you don't want, which leaves it very limited
Perhaps I'm missing something, but without this feature it's no better than what I had before
Can anyone either help or perhaps someone from Adobe can contact me to discuss a refund
    Thanks

    Hi mdibmead,
I'm sorry that PDF Pack isn't meeting your needs. It's true that to alter PDF pages in any way, you need Acrobat. PDF Pack lets you convert files to and from PDF and combine files to PDF, but not edit PDFs.
I would be happy to take care of a cancelation and refund for you. Please let me know how you'd like me to proceed.
    Best,
    Sara

  • Problem opening pdf files with Adobe Reader in Windows 7

I bought a new Dell (Inspiron 5110) with pre-installed Windows 7 Home Premium (Version 6.1 SP1, 64 bit) and pre-installed Adobe Reader X (10.1.1). I cannot open ANY of my old pdf files with the Adobe reader (even after I re-installed the Adobe Reader). On another computer with Windows 7 I get the same error message. When I installed several other pdf-readers (Sumatra, Foxit, ..) I can still not open the pdf's -- but all the pdf's still open under Windows XP on my old computer and they also open on all my colleagues' non-Windows 7 computers. So it appears to be a Windows 7 problem. The Adobe error message says 'Adobe Reader could not open _.pdf because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged (…..).
N.B.: I can download pdf files from the internet and can then open these 'new' pdf files with Adobe Reader X.
N.B.2.: Most of the 'old' pdf files are scientific articles downloaded from various journal websites 2002-2011, so their quality should be out of question.
N.B.3.:I've transfered the files via memory stick and portable HD.
N.B.4.: If I try to open the pdf's via 'Open with' the problem remains the same.
N.B.5.: When, on my Win7 Dell, I've uploaded/attached one of these old pdf files to an email the rtecipient could not tead it. But he could read it when I'd sent the same file from my old Win XP computer.
N.B.6.: I have repeated this last observation: When I upload an old pdf file on my Win7 Dell to my email account and then send it to myself, I cannot open/read it on my Win XP (nor on the Dell, of course). Although the file size is precisely the same.
N.B.7.: When I download a new pdf on my Dell, then upload/attach it to an email also on the Dell and send it to myself, I can download and read the attached pdf on both computers.
Would be grateful for any suggestions.

    This is really strange.
Please correct me if I am wrong, but from what I can understand, any PDF which is launched on your Win 7 OS fails to open, even though the same file works perfectly fine on your Win XP machine?
Could you please run a full system anti virus scan on the said PDFs that are present on your local system. It could be a case of infected PDFs.
Also, it would be great if you could try and download some of the erroneous PDFs from the web again, and see if you experience the same behavior.
    Thanks
    Ankit

Firefox is unsucessfully using google to open pdf files.  How do I get firefox to open pdf files with Adobe reader?
    Message was edited by: veeryTalonted

"Google" is a search engine (website) and NOT (repeat: NOT) a PDF viewer. It can't and won't open PDFs in any real or imaginable way.
Firefox added their own proprietary PDF viewer with version 20 - they're on 21 now. I'll be the first to admit "it sucks". You CAN'T fill in PDF forms with it, and you can't email them from the page like with Opera, Safari or Chrome (which use the reader plug-in still).
Unfortunately, the ONLY option you have now that they've added it and killed the ability for the Reader plug-in to work with Firefox, is Tools>Options>Applications - select Portable Document Format(PDF) and choose "Use Adobe Reader (Default)". What that will do is FORCE Firefox to download the PDF instead of opening it in their terrible PDF viewer in the browser window.
Or... use one of the other browsers I mentioned. They're all free.

  • ?  Printing a PDF file to Adobe PDF messes up everything

Here are three questions that may be related to each other.  I've wanted to ask them for a long time but kept hoping they would somehow resolve themselves.  Any advice would be appreciated.
    1. When I print a PDF file to Adobe PDF as an image, the black color (even the fonts) becomes gray and blurry.  The selection to print as an image is made in Print (to PDF) - Advanced Print Setup - Settings Custom / Print as Image (resolution 600 dpi, which is the highest available choice).  This happens regardless of what settings I choose  in Print - Properties (Standard, High Quality Print, etc.).
    2. Running OCR on occasion does something similar.  The letters become blurry and grayish.  Everything is more difficult to read after OCR. It's as if Adobe has chosen to substitute the font or color for something blurry.  It's strange.
    3. Sometimes OCR doesn't make things worse.  The quality doesn't deteriorate.  In this case I wonder whether the quality should actually improve rather than stay as is.  If a letter is recognized despite the fact that its image is not perfect, shouldn't it be substituted in the document by a perfectly solid letter with no defects by using one of the regular Adobe fonts?  Should a real font be used instead of an image of the letter that has been recognized in OCR?
Are my settings wrong or am I doing something wrong?  I'm using Adobe Acrobat X Pro.
    Thanks in advance.

What version of Acrobat? What OS? What are your choices when creating the OCR? Without knowing how you are doing things, it is hard to answer.
It is not clear why you want to create images in a PDF from a current PDF. For a black type style, it is probably better to use a preflight script to convert to gray-scale first and then do your graphic conversion (I am not asking why you want to do this, but just trying to address your question).
