Creating RAID5 with Disk Utility?

I have three new 4TB drives and wanted to set them up in my old MacPro (Early2008) as RAID5. This should give me 8TB with one redundant disk. However, I don't see a RAID5 option in Apple Disk Utility (Version 13, in OS X 10.10.1).
In doing some digging in the Knowledge Base it suggests first creating a concatenated set with 2 of the drives and then creating a mirrored RAID set with the concatenated set and the third drive.
Not sure if this is correct or will achieve what I want. Does this provide the software equivalent of RAID5 with 8TB and one redundant drive? Thanks for any help.

Disk Utility does not do RAID 5. And there is serious question about whether anyone should be using RAID 5.
RAID 5 gets its redundancy by calculating a permutation (XOR or Checksum or similar) of the bits in two blocks, and recording that as the third block. If any of the three are lost, the other two can (in theory) be used to recover the missing data for the third.
This takes some TIME to compute the check data on Write, and may take Time to check on Read. Because of this, most RAID 5 setups include a RAID controller, both to reduce the time required, and to pre-acknowlege the receipt of proper data to be written to the drives momentarily.
The Apple RAID card (NOT recommended today) acknowledges Writes and allows the System to proceed when the data hit the RAID card, and relies on its Backup Battery to maintain the data if the power fails at that moment (before the data are actually written to the drives). Mac Pro RAID card was a nice concept when it was invented, but it has not been updated in about a decade, and is showing its age. Everything about dealing with its Backup Battery today has become evil.
The tragic flaw with RAID 5 is when a drive fails. Now you are working without a net. Everything slows WAY down, and the drives work extra hard to rebuild the missing data, because all those checksums have to be re-computed and re-written to rebuild the replaced drive. And if another drive fails while the rebuild is happening, the entire set can blow to pieces without any hope of recovery. With drives getting larger and larger without substantially improving their 'unrecoverable errors per bits read', it is becoming increasingly likely that during the course of a re-build, an uncorrectable error will occur, possibly putting the entire array out of business.

  • Error message when trying to create DMG with Disk Utility

Have a highly confidential folder on my drive, so am driving to convert to a DMG file, with password protection. It gets nearly done with the DMG process then generates Error - 49168.
    Anyone know what means?
1.I choose read-write as my access options
2.Under encryption I choose the AES setting. It asks me to create a password and I create one (unchecking the "remember password option, of course")
    3. It seems to get through 95% of the process, then produces that error message.

A little Googling suggests that Norton Anti-Virus can cause this problem by trying to scan the image as it's being created. The fix seems to be to turn off NAV while creating the image.
If that doesn't work, I'd suggest rebooting from the system disk and having Disk Utility repair the disk, to make sure all is in good working order.

  • Creating a mp3 disk image with disk utility

    Hi,
I'd like to create a mp3 disk image with disk utility. In the end I would like to have a mp3 disk that plays in various stero system and macs.
But I want to add some additional files: a png file for a nice folder background of the dmg, a special image for the dmg, and some text files relating to the mp3s.
Is this possible at all? Is there something I have to observe creating the dmg?
    Thanx for your help

Is this possible at all? Is there something I have to observe creating the dmg?
You need to know which file systems your "various stereo systems" understand. The default file system created on a diskimage when burning is a hybrid file system- HFS+, ISO-9660 with Rock Ridge, and Joliet with Rock Ridge.

  • I created a partition on my iMac drive. I have trashed the files that were in the partition but I can not trash the icon. I tried with Disk Utility. Any ideas?

If I understand correctly,  the partition will still be on the disk and therefore mounted on the desktop. You would need to remove that partition to remove the icon.
Be careful if you try this, don't upset the main Macintosh HD partition or you may lose the OS and your files.
And always have a full tested backup of your system before modifing disk partitions.

  • Can't create disk image with Disk Utility

I just upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion and i can no longer create disk images with Disk Utility in order to store encrypted data.
The operation fails and ends with the post :
Failed to create disk image, error:
hdiutil: create failed - Resource busy
I use three Macs with Mountain Lion, and this problem occurs only on one of the three.
I check the disk, repair permissions and did a reset of the PRAM. I even did a reinstall of Mountain Lion, without success.
But curiously, using a new user account, I was able to create a first disk image. But no one after.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the page that opens.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Try the action that you're having trouble with again. Post any messages that appear in the Console window – the text, please, not a screenshot.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
DO NOT INDISCRIMINATELY DUMP THOUSANDS OF LINES FROM THE LOG INTO A MESSAGE. If you do that, I will not respond.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out by search-and-replace in a text editor before posting.

  • Trying To Create Encrypted Disk Images With Disk Utility.

I am trying to create encrypted read and write Disk Images of around 2 GB to 6 GB with Disk Utility.
More often than not the dmg is NOT encrypted.
It seems very hit and miss . . . . most of the time missing!
Is this process notoriously unreliable or am I likely to be doing something wrong?

I think you have cracked it Niel!
I made another, unchecking the Keychain box, and it worked perfectly.
I have been using a password which is used for other items.
Now the .dmg has been created can I check the Keychain box and if so what are the benefits?
I have never understood what the Keychain does.

  • I create a new partition in an external hard drive with disk utility. Now it says mounting disk and it's taking forever. Is that normal? Please help!

I have an external hard drive from seagate. Tonight I decided to give it a try and add a new partition to it so I could have a bootable version of mountain lion in it it just in case of emergency and no internet. After creating the partition, disk utility says "mountain disk", and its been doing it for at least 20 minutes and not moving... Any ideas? btw, now the external drive is not even showing on the left-side bar...
    Thanks!

I would try reformatting the drive and creating the partition again. Make certain that you erase the drive and format it as "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" and the partition the drive.
What you describe is not normal... try again.

Is this possible to do with disk utility?

    Hello
you can not make any kind on RAID type with only one hard drive you need at least tow drive to perform a RAID volume

  • Can I enlarge a RAID10 with Disk Utility?

    I have a 4TB RAID10 (4x2TB disks) created with Disk Utility. I also have 4x4TB spare disks. Can I enlarge the RAID10 to 8TB (4x4TB)?
This post suggests that I can break each mirrored set, and replace each of the 2TB disks with 4TB, one by one, and end up with 2 mirrored sets of 8TB each.
But is there any way to enlarge the STRIPED set of mirrored sets?
I've also considered RAID5, but am scared of the "write hole" data rot issue. But I have the machine on a battery backup, so is this an issue?

  • Can Time Capsule hard drive be accessed with Disk Utility? I'm having issues...

How does one mount , inspect , verify , and possibly repair a Time Capsule hard drive  with Disk Utility ?
My 500Gb 1st gen Time Capsule  ( used wireless with Airport)  has quit backing up new data . ( iMac Core2Duo, Snow Leopard) .  TC  says it needs 238 Gb of available space, but only has 35 Gb available. So it quit doing new  incremental backup altogether. It's almost like it wants to start over.
Airport connection seems good.  Time Capsule seems healthy enough ( for being 3.5 years old) .  I really dont want to lose the data on the existing backup.
What is the nature of this glitch ?

I'm sorry , LaP , but " Time Capsule become too full " is not the cause of my problem .
In fact, I just got done pruning the iMac system hard drive a little  to free up some  10 Gb of new space , yet created only maybe 1-2 Gb of new data to archive. The TC had been doing regular daily backups without issue and Time Machine  was showing me stuff from about ten days back.
The TC informed me it needed 235 Gb of space but only had 34 Gb available. That 235 Gb needed is totally in error.  My problem more resembles corrupt hard disk directories . Maybe Permissions ?  which is why I asked about using Disk Utility.
Yes, I do need a newer larger TC, but pigs don't fly and money does not grow on trees to make tha happen. The backup I have now is fine and should work if I need to restore anything in the forseeable. New data will not be archived, alas.

  • Help with Disk Utility

I have a removable usb flash drive that I've been using for a while. Occasionally I need to erase it with disk utility to remove all of the past information it has held. This time around though the drive doesn't seem to be created (I'm not sure if I'm saying that the right way or not).
    I've included a photo here:
    http://northeasternxposure.com/help/drive.png
Normally there is the "983.0 MB VBTM . . ." drive with the "UNTITLED" one below it. As you can see the "UNTITLED" drive doesn't look like a drive, but has the icon of a document. And at the bottom it shows the capacity, yet none of it is available. This is why it won't mount. I've tried to redo it multiple times with no luck. Hopefully someone knows a setting or something that I should change to repair this problem.

I went into Finder and it could still see the drive, yet not access it for some reason. So what I did was log out and then back in and everything was working fine again. I've got no idea why that problem had occurred, but thanks for the quick responses.
And I always do remember to mark helpful and solved. Thanks!

  • Can't Archive with Disk Utility

I want to create a .dmg of my hard drive with Disk Utility before installing 10.5. I have tried to select the device, the volume and individual folders on the drive and Disk utility won't create a .dmg of them to the same drive, a DVD or external drives. It reports an error : resource in use.
The same is true if I boot from the 10.5 install disk and try to install with archiving from the 10.5 install DVD. How can I back up my files before installing 10.5?

I have never done it but it's possible that you have to create the .dmg using the startup disk?
You are trying to archive a running system - that may be the problem
Reboot with the Tiger disk (not Leopard) and use the DU on that disk.
    See if that works.

  • Can't get rid of Windows on my Mac even with disk utility

I noticed this disk0r3 or something like that, and I know this is Windows.
I have a bit of a bug issuea nd the windows wasn't done very well. I wanted to erease it with disk utility, but it said it couldn't. What should I do?
I've tried the zero, 15, and 35 or whatever they offered.

Did you use Apple's Boot Camp utility to create a hard drive partition for Windows?
If so, do you want to erase the partition created for Windows or eliminate the 2nd partition and go back to a single hard drive partition?
If the latter, you have no choice but to reformat the hard drive first which erases the hard drive and then re-install OS X and all software.

  • Partitioning with disk utility

hi there.. i wonder, can i partition my primary hard drive with disk utility live? (i mean not from the leopard dvd on boot) i want to create a new partition that would be less than the amount of free space i have, while running leopard (my mac os shouldn't be damaged i think), is that possible? and safe? thanx

    cukerko,
If you have an Intel Mac, the answer is yes. Intel Macs must have internal drives that use the GUID Partition Map, and these can be dynamically partitioned and re-sized under Leopard's Disk Utility.
It is relatively safe, but it is an action that modifies the drive at a low level. In other words, one would be foolish to attempt a re-partitioning or re-size without a good and current backup on hand. Provided you have such a backup, there's no reason not to create your partition.
