for learning purpose you can learn with vmware server to create a raw device to configure/install ASM.

  • Create the raw devices under Linux

    Hi,
Hoe can I create the raw devices under Linux?

    Hi,
I just have created two raw devices,
    1, /etc/sysconfig/rawdevices
    /dev/raw/raw1 /dev/hda2
    /dev/raw/raw2 /dev/hda3
    2, chown oracle:dba /dev/raw/rawN and chmod 660 /dev/raw/rawN
3, after restart the machine, start I runInstaller again.
But Oracle can still not find the candidate disks, even after give the path /dev/raw
    Why?

Oracle does fully support raw devices. For a mini cookbook, search on "raw device". I've put up a mini story on how to make raw redologs.

  • How use raw device in linux?

    Hi all.
    scene:
    oracle 8.1.6.1
    Linux red hat 6.1
I'm trying to create a database with raw device.
In HPux the raw device is /dev/rdsk but I found no documentation for linux raw device.
    thanks for any help.
    null

Prove it: try to create file large than 2Gb on 8.1.6 under Linux (under NT it works) and try to use raw partitions. About Pmon ORA-601 simply check Metalink.
I know Oracle, it is my work. I like Oracle database. I think, Linux is the best OS. But i want Oracle to solve current bugs more quickly, for a customers could not say "Oracle on Linux - it ***** ". Because, customers must to know about problems to avoid it. It is a more biger problem, when database is crashed.

  • VISA do not find RAW device in linux??

Hy. I have usb device with product ID and vendor ID. My operational system is Linux Fedora. Linux system find my device, but Labview (VISA) do not find this device. Can somebody tell my, where is the problem??

    Hello qwqwqw,
Dennis is correct, and that is the document you want to reference.  Specifically, Part 4 is about USB on Linux and Mac.  Officially though, National Instruments does not offer email or phone support for Linux Fedora.
    Good luck with your application!

  • 10.1.0.3 on RH4(Centos) + Raw devices + ASM + RAC

    Hi,
I'm just wondering if anyone here tried installing a single node RAC on 2 instance using ASM on Oracle 10g (10.1.0.3)?
I am using RH4(CENTOS 4.1), Oracle 10.1.0.3 + CRS 10.1.0.3 on fake raw devices in Linux.
I have been able to install the CRS and Oracle database software successfully.
All CRS services and listener are up and running.
    crs_stat command return successful results.
srvctl status nodeapps -n <node_name> also returns successful results.
However, when I attempt to startup the ASM instance, I keep encountering these errors:
ORA-00603:ORACLE server session terminated by fatal error
    ORA-27504:IPC error creating OSD context
The ORA-00603 error message will appear immediately in the SQLPLUS prompt when I try to startup ASM instance.
Both errors will be logged in alert.log and trace files, no other useful error messages besides these errors.
When I attempt to create a normal database instance using datafiles on the same machine, these errors also appear again!
So, I figure its got nothing to do with the raw devices since my OCR location and Voting devices are using the same raw devices on Linux.
Anyone did the same thing like me and faced similar problems.... please help.
    Cheers

You can use dbca to create ASM instance to get rid of the manual copy business.
In realease 1, you can invoke dbca, choose database instance and walk through still you reach storage clause and choose asm and DBA will create ASM instance on both nodes.
Ensure that you choose cluster install option and all the nodes at the initial stages.

  • Raw devices in cluster

how to create a raw device in enterprise linux
i created raw devices with raw file , but when i shutdown the raw devices are not present

Yes, your understanding seems to be correct. Regarding your questions
The production guys want to save the RMAN reporitory on tape with UNIX cp-like commands , but they can't access ASM
You can configure FRA (Flash Recovery Area) and use separate ASM Diskgroup for it. Backups will automatically go to this location then. After this you can configure SBT_TAPE channel and backup FRA using *"backup recovery area"* command.
Do I need to buy a third externl storage server and a dedicated volume manager to handle shared UNIX file system between the nodes ?
I don't see OS below. In case it is linux or windows , you can try OCFS.
If so, can I "copy" with ASMCMD the RMAN repository to the UNIX file systems ?
I really do not understand , what do you mean by RMAN repository. If you are talking about catalog, it will still be in database where it has been created.
Is it possible not to use a volume manager but to connect every RAC node to an external SAN or NAS, without the need to share those filesystems between the nodes ?
    I believe yes.
    Cheers

  • Content Server 6.40 on Raw Devices

    Hi Folks!
We'd like to install a Content Server 6.40 using raw devices (on Linux Suse SLES9).
Do we need to install the MaxDB, if we use raw devices? At this point the InstGuide does not give a clear description of what to do. It looks we can use the raw devices directly without having a database instance. Is this right?
Is there any disadvantage compared to using the access via file system and DB?
    Any hint is appreciated...
    Best regards
    Torsten

    Hi Torsten,
As far as i know SAP Content Server use MaxDB or a File System, I have use it with MaxDB with good results, anyhow.... read the following for details,

  • Raw devices files

    Hi,
I already created raw devices on database 10g R2. How can make those raw devices available to oracle user?
    Best Regards

Yes, the os is Sun Solaris and my question how can
create tablespaces on raw devices.create tablespace abcd datafile '/dev/rdsk/c0t0d0s4/abcd.dbf' size ...
This is an example only, adapt it to your needs! Never fill up the rawdevice completely, leave some space for emergency situations. A different question: why are you using raw devices? What's the output of uname -a? Beginning with Solaris 8 (don't know the maintenance level), you can mount filesystems with the direct io option which gives you almost raw device performance with all advantages of a file system.
    Thank you.

  • How to migrate raw device to OCFS in the share disk?

I have a 10gr2 RAC env on two nodes and use raw device, I want to migrate the raw device to OCFS but I can't find the doc to help me? anyone can give me a hand? thankx~~

    Hi terbas
Not sure that this is the correct section to ask that question, but anyway herewith the way to do it:
Creating raw devices is the same process as creating a Logica Volume in AIX using smitty. You have to define Volume Groups an hdisk devices. The difference is in ths type of LV used, whe creating JFS FS you used to select jfs/jfs2 types, while whe creating raw devices you can assign a label as "raw" and the use the raw device. Sample of creating a Raw Device:
mklv -t raw VGName <Size in LP Units>
When creating raw devices is good to have some consideration about placement of the logical volume in order to achieve som extra performance, remember that data placed near to center i better accessed than data placed on the edge of the disk.
From a guide i used to configure AIX systems for Oracl installations:
    "RAW Device Interface
The RAW device interface allows for the least amount of overhea you can achieve with UNIX I/Os. When using the RAW devic interface, UNIX simply assigns a section of the disk to each RA device. This portion of the disk is contiguous; accesses to i bypass all disk caching and file-system overhead.

  • Create tablespace using RAW device

    Hi,
When you create the tablespace using RAW device, you no need to specify the size parameter in the sql. It works in Solaris but not in Linux.
I dont know why, can anyone experience this issue before? please let me know
    Thanks
    Veera

My advice for you would be to always include SIZE parameter when you create tablespace, redo log file on raw device.

  • How to create DIR/File on a raw device in RAC environment.

    Hi all,
I use a shell script to create DIR and File on a raw device also it creates schema and tablespaces.
I am facing problem in creating DIR and Files on raw device.
One more thing, can multiple tablespaces be created on a raw device.
    Thanks & regards,
    Sanjeev

Thanks for the response. Please help me further.
About the Script - It asks for the path for creating DIR and uses shell command to create DIR. Later same path and DIR name is used to create Oracle DIR. Now in place of absolute path raw device name is passed. The same script is also used for creating tablespaces and schema.
There is second script that is .sql script that creates external table in the newly created schema. All this has been working fine on single instance Oracle server. we have tested many times but fails in RAC environment when we use raw device.
Question is - If I use filesystem will the external table's flat files and Directories be accessible to all the instances.
I have one application written in java that would be clustered and running on these oracle servers. This application would be accessing those external tables and their flat files. Will there be a problem accessing these flat files accross the instances.
    Regards,
    Sanjeev.
