Creating reminders in ical to match calendar group

When I'm in iCal, how can I have reminders to match my calendars. For example, I have a calendar for my work events, can I create a reminder for that calendar. Right now, if I try to manually create a reminder list, if I use the same name it won't let me.

The following worked for me under 10.7.4 for calendars "On my mac". Don't know if it'll work with iCloud calendars
Quit iCal
Go to ~/Library/Calendars (if you can't see the library folder, execute this line in the Terminal: chflags nohidden ~/Library/"
There you'll see many folders with coded names ending in ".calendar". Each one of those contains one of your calendars. Open one of these folders and prewiew the info.plist file. There you should find a <key> named Title which has a <string> which contains the name of the calendar. Once you've found the calendar whose name you want to change, press the "Open with Property list editor" which should show up in Preview and change the name of the calendar. Save the changes in the Property list editor and you'll be almost done.
Before reopening iCal, you have to remove the Calendar Cache from the ~/Library/Calendars folder. This is an automatically generated file which is used by iCal to speed up. By deleting it, you basically force iCal to read all the calendars from scratch, including the one whose name we just changed.
If everything went well, the next time you launch iCal you should see a progress bar with the message "Upgrading iCal calendars", and the right name on your reminder list.

  • Can I get iCal 2 (particularly Calendar groups feature) on OS X 10.3.9 ?

I'm sure it's a simple question but I can't find anything to say either way...
Can I get iCal 2 (particularly Calendar groups feature) on my OS X 10.3.9 iBook or do I have to upgrade?
Since I was first persuaded to get a mac a couple of years ago I've been going on about having groups for my calenders and how simple it must be, since you can group things heirachically in most other apps. So I'm pleased to see it's in iCal 2 however I get the impression that means I have to find the money and the disk space for an upgrade before I can get groups.
Am I right or is there some wonderful way I can just upgrade iCal?
Thanks to anyone who can point me in the right direction.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
You cannot upgrade to iCal 2 without installing Mac OS X 10.4 at minimum, as critical Mac OS X 10.4 frameworks which it requires, and Address Book 4, which it is designed to exchange data with, are not present in earlier releases of the operating system.

    Hi,
Lion has changed the way reminders (todos as was) work. They now seem to need to be in a seperate calendar.
In iCal open the File menu and select New Reminder List... and select where to put it.

  • Any way to create a calendar group in server calendar in ical client?

Does anyone know how, in iCal, to create a "New Calendar Group" (see File menu in iCal) for a CalDAV account created on Snow Leopard Server? This feature only seems to work for Calendars which are on my mac. Even if you are clicked on the CalDAV calendars and hit "New Calendar Group", the group gets created only on the mac side, any ideas?

You may create own calendars for special purposes as e.g. Sport's, secret events, hobby's and so on.
As iCal allows to share calendars, you want eventually not share family events to others or if you manage a circle you may only share the "Homebrew" calendar with them.

  • In Ical I lost one of my calendar group, how do I restore it from time capsule

in Ical i lost one of my calendar groups, how do I get it back.  I have a time capsule.
    thanks

    salvsalinas,
Look in your Macintosh HD/Users/yourusername/Library Folder, where you will find a "Calendars" Folder, which can be replaced using Time Machine.
Make sure that you quit iCal before attempting to replace the folder, and choose a timeline when the group last existed.
    Good Luck.

  • How do you delete calendar groups in ical 5.0?

I downloaded os x lion, and when I went into ical, I can't seem to delete calendar groups I don't want. How do I do this? Thanks!

Click on the event, and use the delete key. Or click on the event, and choose iCal>Edit>Delete.
    Good luck.

  • ICal calendar groups on iTouch 2G?

The calendar groups that I made in iCal on my macbook are not showing on my iPod touch. Is it true that I can only select one calendar or all on the iPod? Not some at a time using calendar groups. Am I missing something or is this feature not supported by iPod Touch 2G, OS 3.0? (I'm using iTunes 8.2.1)

I've checked all calendars in iTunes (told iTunes to sync 'all calendars'). I can view all the 'calendars' on the Touch. I can't view 'calendar groups' however. Note that in iCal's File menu are two different commands 'New Calendar' and 'New Calendar Group'. It's the second one that I don't see anywhere on the iPod - that's what I need for organizing everything in my life.
    Thanks,
I want to check that such a feature really is missing from the iPod touch before I head to the Apple feedback page to tell them what I need in their next update.

  • ICal won't recognize calendars in a calendar group

First - I do not use the cloud, everything is stored on my local hardDisk
Second - the problem is only with iCal. Other programs can see calandars within calendar groups just fine.
Third and most importantly - I apologize in advance for misspelling calendar (or anything else) as I am sure to do so many times.
My problem: All of a sudden iCal stopped recognizing anything inside a calendar group.
I am running Mountain Lion 10.8.3.
I have multiple calendar groups, all containing calendars inside them and a slew of events for each.
When I click on a calandar within a group and add a new event it popps up with the right color, indicating that it will be saved within that calandar group, yet inside the actual event (in the edit screen) the calandar associated with it is null. Specifically I can't choose anything because everthing is grayed out. The only thing showing are the names of the various calendar groups I have, but none of the calandars inside those groups show up for me to select them.
Notice that the new even is GREEN indicating that it will go into the World Holiday's calendar inside the group Holidays. Yet inside the details of the even it shows that the associated calandar is Lightfoot, the only calendar not inside a group. The only way to make World Holidays an option is to move it out of the group, but that defeats the purpose of groups.
As stated before, the calendar groups show up and work fine in other programs, the problem is unique to iCal alone. Here is a screenShot of mail as I try to add a new even from there.
See how it is giving me the option to put the event in ANY of the calandars whether they are inside a group or not. This is how iCal was working up until Tuesday the 19th. This is also what I just finished doing when it broke. I have tried the following with no success:
    - deleting all the calendars/calendar groups and working from a clean/error free archive of iCal
    - deleteing my cache files
    - installing a dummy user with admin privelges to see if the problem ports over
    - reinstalling OS X (not erasing my data but in essence reinstalling iCal)
    - verifying the disk to find any errors (there were none)
    - reparing disk permissions (they were all fine but I repaired them anyway)
    - contacting apple support (nice guy, but so far can't figure it out either)
It appears to be a hierarcy issue inside of iCal alone. It is as if anything inside a calendar group (calandars and events) is unreadable by iCal, like the hierarchical structure is corrupt or there is a bad line of code in there somewhere. Any ideas on what I should try and do to fix it?
    Thanks!

I too am having this difficulty.  It just showed up today (3/27) and nearest as I can figure, is somehow tied to the latest Mountain Lion update since I just installed that from the App Store.  That said, I'm no closer to figuring out what to do about it.
I am also running 10.8.3 and am steering clear of the Cloud because it doesn't support calendar groups.
Like you, I can get things in the right calendar/color if I click that calendar then add the event.  But if I then go into the individual event it is being labeled as something else.  I think it is actually putting it in the correct calendar, because if I click between events and watch the calendar bar on the left, it switches between the different calendars and groups appropriately.  It is a bit frustrating though that if I want to switch an event's calendar assignment, I now have to re-enter it, rather than just switching it through the edit pane or by right-clicking.
Here's hoping someone out there will see this and have a solution.
    Cheers!

I recently installed a new hard drive in a MacBook 2007 and then 10.6.3. I'd like to be able to Sync iCal to the calendars I have created on other devices (new iCloud account and an ME account). I can't upgrade to 10.7 or 10.8 because the MacBook is 32 bit. Just looking for a workaround as this is not a primary device.

You should update to the latest version of Snow Leopard, 10.6.8 - you can download it here; however it's still not compatible with iCloud and though you can connect to access your email you cannot access any other of iCloud's facilities.
However some people have been able to set up calendar syncing by using the method detailed here - this is an unsupported hack and may not be reliable, and may stop working at some future point. I've not tried it: use at your own discretion.
    To access the email:
Entering iCloud email settings manually in Snow Leopard or Leopard
Are you sure you can't upgrade to Lion? It requires an Intel Core 2 Duo processor, which you may well have, though it also needs 2GB RAM so you might need to add additional RAM (might not be worth it for what you want). The published specs don't mention 32 or 64 bit. You can buy Lion by ringing the Apple Store at the number at bottom left of this page.

  • Cannot create new Calendar Group in Mountain Lion

I am using a brand new iMac. I didn't use the migration tool-- instead I exported all of my Calendars from Snow Leopard and Imported them via the File menu in the Calendar application in Mountain Lion.
Under the File menu, there is no "New Calendar Group" option. Command-Shift-N results in an error alert sound and no action.
I do not use iCloud for anything other than email-- everything is turned off in System Preferences.
In Calendar, under the Preferences -> Accounts section, I have NO accounts. It is completely blank.
My previous groups from my export/import are there under the "On My Mac" section of the Calendars panel. I can edit them. But I cannot create any new ones.
Any suggestions? Everything on the internet says I need to deactivate my iCloud account calendars... but I don't use them.

Ah, Barney, you are a lifesaver!
Sorry for the late reply, I was away from my computer this weekend.
All of my calendars had been in groups. I moved one of them outside, and TA DA-- "New Calendar Group" appeared.
Thanks so much for the help. I will have to leave 1 calendar outside of a group so I can add as many as I'd like.

  • HT2513 iCal 6 Calendar groups?

I can't find any information about how to set up a Calendar Group in iCal 6, other than someone said you had to go to iCloud to do it. (And I didn't find anywhere there to add a Calendar Group.) I have set up many different calendars for me, but would like to publish them as a group, instead of 15 different calendars. I assumed that putting them all in a group, and then publishing the group would do this. Should be a simple task, but there are no menu items to add a Group, just additional single calendars. Hope someone can help me with specifics. RW

Interesting. When I search iCal Help using "groups" the following is shown.
    "Organize your calendars in groups
You can group calendars so that they appear together in the Calendar list.
NOTE: You can only group calendars under the heading On My Mac in the Calendars list.
    1. In Calendar, choose File - New Calendar Group.
    2. Name the group.
    3. Drag calendars to the new group in the Calendar list."
However, my File menu only has New Calendar listed, followed by iCloud. I have tried turning off enabling of the iCloud account, at which point all of my calendars disappear.
If Calendar Groups are not available in this new version, then I suppose the only thing to do would be to export everything, and re-import into one calendar.
