Creating rule file

Hi,
Can i create rules file like below , unable to define for more than one level 0 member from the same dimension. (can define by taking all the level 0 values in column , but dont want like that)
Level 0,Time Alias 0,Time Level 0,Time Alias 0,Time --- ---

Hi,
generally, you have cubes ,with dimension ,along with hundreds members ( much more than that too , in few cases).All these members ,majority are of level 0. You can make rules files across the column picks.your format of horizantal way is not possible .
May i know ,what exactly you are trying to achieve out of this .
rather , pick your data source file and make changes to suit to the needs of essbase rule file

Substitution variable is not visible at Data Prep editor-creating rule file

Hi,
We are working on Essbase 9.3.1, Oracle as a database source for loading the data into Essbase.
We have create a substitution variable at "server level" to use it in rule file as a DSN for data source. But this substitution variable is not visible in the drop down of substitution variable in 'Data prep editor' while creating the rule file.
We restarted the Essbase server also but still it is not visible in 'data prep editor'.
Any help will appreciated on this issue.

1) yes I've tried it on 2 different clients
2) yes I've tried it on the server
3) I haven't tried that, but don't normally use MaxL for anything
4) I took a 'broken' rule, saved it locally, closed and reopened and it still didn't work
5) I normally do files on the server, but I can't even get to that point because when I get the 'Open Data File' nothing happens, no dialog box pops up, so I don't get the chance to select the location
6) This is a production server and EAS is running as a service, so I'd have to test this one afterhours.
Because it happens on 3 separate PC's I'd eliminate bad EAS, since only some rules do it and others don't I'd think it could be corrupt rules, but it'll happen to new rules just as fast, and they still work just fine, so if that's the case I need to figure out what is corrupting them...
Network issues wouldn't surprise me, I get TCP/IP errors regularly saying I have to increase my net retry count, but I've tweaked with those settings tons... looks like those are really the database server is running out of memory even though I have 4GB physical 16MB Virtual memory (32 bit environment though... I do have the /3GB switch turned on)... I've had to scale my caches way back to allow certain databases to even function.

Hi,
Create 1 text file in this way, the file is tab separated. The first line is Header line. So do a setting to skip that line while you are loading a data.(Options -> Data Source Property -> Header -> No of lines to skip 1)

Create 1 rule file and open this text file in it and then provide a field settings one by one. Do the necessary settings also.

Unable to create rule file

Hi,
I am trying to create a rule file in one essbase cube using the level 0 export (extract in column format) from another cube of a different application. Level0 data file is saved in the local machine from where I am running Essbase. While creating the rule file, trying to open the data file, error message comes like "Invalid blank character in name". Can anyone please let me know what the error can be?

I had a similar issue in the past,
Even if the file is placed on Desktop at times EAS was picking it, but always failed with MaxL may be because of it's syntax and the way it can read the path. Maybe there are other factors as well.
But it's always better to put the file in a path without spaces and it'll work fine always. :)

Creating Rule file to pull data from OCI Interface

I am new to OCI, I have worked on DSN method earlier to pull data from database.
Can someone give me steps of how to pull data from OCI interface.
My database is Oracle 11gR2 and I am using 11.1.2.2 Fusion version.

There have been a number of issues relating to data and using OCI, I am not sure whether they are all resolved in 11.1.2.2 so if you are using OCI make sure you validate the data once loaded into essbase.

You dont need to create a rule file. You can create a alias table like this in a notapad

1)Open the outline in edit mode.
2)Select Outline > Import alias table.
3)In the Open dialog box, select the alias table import file.
4)Click OK.
go to outline properties and the new alias table must be made Set as active to view the alias names.
you can create and import up to 10 alias tables

Data Load file and Rule file Creation

Hi,
I have used to create Rule file and Data file for loading data into Essbase 7.1.6 version.
Past two years I didnt work in Essbase and forget the option, field properities, data load file creation.
Could you please advice me or any demo for creating rule file as well data files?.

Two things I could suggest.
1. look at the Sample.basic application it has dimension and data load rules for all sorts of scenarios
2. Come to my session at Kaleidoscope Rules files beginning to advanced where I go over some of the more interesting things with rules files

You cannot create a rules file externally to EAS or App Manager - wouldn't that be nice? But you can load data in a free form method. One structure that we have found that works is comma or tab delimited files - these can be loaded with no rules. The files need to follow a certain structure - the one that is working for us is: ONE data column per record, and any fields that represent members that are numeric (like account numbers) have to be in " "... We can then manipulate the SQL that creates the text file on the fly in our batch process. Good luck...

Import dimension and member via maxl, how to create data file and rule file

I have a task to import dimension and member into Essbase, for project requirement, I have to use text file or spreadsheet file.
I wonder which format can be imported into Essbase?
I tried to create them, failed.
Do you have any samples to help me? dimension file and rule file...

import database Sample.Basic data from data_file 'C:\TEMP\GENREF.txt' using rules_file 'C:\TEMP\GENREF.rul' on error append to 'C:\TEMP\logs\dimbuild.log';Here issue is not with rulefile but in reading the rule file.
I hope rule file is in the database directory (By default it will get saved there only)
Try with the below command
import database Sample.Basic data from data_file 'C:\TEMP\GENREF.txt' using server rules_file 'GENREF' on error append to 'C:\TEMP\logs\dimbuild.log';
Rule file also had one issue
Market, Product, Measures, Jan, Feb, Mar, Apr, May, Jun, Jul, Aug, Sep, Oct, Nov, DecHere I am seeing only four dimensions from the Sample.Basic database
Scenario is missing. So define Actual (Scenario Dimension member) in the rule file header definition.
All dimensions must be identified to parse one data file with rule file.
PS: Naming (GENREF) is also irrelevant if you are loading data. It is apt for dim load.

Get problem when create dimension using dimension build rule file

I got the following warning when I tried to load dimension. I have a product dimension hierarchy which contains 6 levels. I manually create a dimension call product which include six generations. I also create a rule file using SQL. This SQL selects 6 columns and I map each column to each generation. When I load data to build dimension, I always got the following warning and only some part of data get loaded. Anybody know that? Do I have to load parent first before loading child or I can load them at same time?

You are getting duplicate names. YOu need to prefix or suffix (or sql concatinate) to make the members unique. in the record 1 example you might want the outpout to look like
Product line 1 Group 2 subgroup 3 Product family 10 product 10 sku 171
Of course I used full names to make it undersatandable, some would use one, two or three letter abrevaitions.

Create Attribute Dimension by rule file

How can we create an attribute dimension and associtae members of sparse dimension with members of attribute dimension by using a rule file?
There is no option of 'Attribute' under dimension type in dimension propertites.
Plz help on it.

First you have to create a standard dimension and made the storage setting sparse.
Then, you can create another dimension of type Attribute and associate it with the standard sparse dimension.
Then you can write rule files for attributes.
If you are assigning the attribute dimension MKT_TYPE to the standard dimension MARKET and the generation 4 is the last.
The typical rule file is like this:
Gen4, MARKET MKT_TYPE 4, MARKET
New york Big Market
Washington Small Market

Create Outline by a bimension build rule file

How we can create a new outline by a rule file. I am able to create the rule file but don't know how to use to create the outline. Please help.

Right Click on the database
Select Load Data
Check Buid only in the mode
Then locate datafile and rulefile.
Or click on the outline..
then in Menu select Outline menu, then update outline.

if you run the command 'abs' as root, you can find these PKGBUILDs in subdirectories of /var/abs. Hopefully you could adapt one of those to your binary program.

Unable to create .fsm file in Text Data Processing from .rul file

I am trying to compile english-tf-voc-sentiment.rul file to generate english-tf-voc-sentiment.fsm file using below command from cmd.
tf-cgc -i C:\Users\336655\Desktop\Modified\english-tf-voc-sentiment.rul -o C:\Users\336655\Desktop\Modified\english-tf-voc-sentiment.fsm
But getting below error.
Error: Could not open file ./english-tf-voc-thesaurus.rul
Error: Could not build FSM file.
where as english-tf-voc-thesaurus.rul is file which is called by english-tf-voc-sentiment.rul file
Any idea how to resolve this issue?
