Creating SL Images on OSX Lion Server

I have a 2011 Mac Mini with Lion Server.
What is the best way to create Snow Leopard netboot / netinstall images from OS X Lion?
I tried using System Image Utility, but Lion Server will not recognize any Snow Leopard disk.
I have tried a number of different SL grey install discs, and the 10.6.3 retail...but Lion Server will not recognize these to create a netboot / netinstall image.
Thank you for any assis

Hi
Download the Server Admin Tools from here:
http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1457
These are not installed when installing Lion and then Server App. Once installed launch Server Admin, click on the Server's name in the side panel, click on Settings > Services and enable the DHCP Service. Once enabled it should appear in the side panel. The rest should be fairly obvious?
HTH?

  • Problems with Boot Camp, OSX Lion Server 10.7.3, and Windows 7

My new Mac Mini Server is running OSX Lion Server 10.7.3. I want to install Windows 7 as a dual boot. I start up Boot Camp and use an ISO image to create a USB boot disk. I don't seem to be able to use the DVD to install, so I use an ISO image on disk. I continue with the Boot Camp installation, with all three options on the main screen checked.  When I get to the part where I have to pick a partition on which to install, the only one I can select, and must format, is the partition labeled BOOTCAMP. But the Boot Camp support software Windows is installed there. I can continue with the Windows installation, and boot into Windows 7 with no problem. But since the Boot Camp drivers were wiped out, I cannot connect to the network, etc. I don't have a Boot Camp control panel either.I did this once before on my other Mac Mini Server I have, running the same OSX Lion Server 10.7.3, and it worked without a problem. I'm writing this message on that copy of Windows. But this new install just will not work, after two days of trying. I *must* get this working. I'm stumped.
CAN ANYONE HELP ??? TIA !!!!

First, this is re-post of your other thread.
Your driverrs were not and will not be "wiped out."
Run Boot Camp Assistant. Download the drivers
Your profile says Lion so that will let you store drivers on flash memory card.
They are never placed where Boot Camp created a partition.

  • How can I use LDAP searching from OSX Lion Server to Mozilla Thunderbird?

How can I use LDAP searching from OSX Lion Server to Mozilla Thunderbird?  We have a super awesome contacts server that works great for our Mac users.  About 30% of our company are on PCs, and I would like to use the Mozilla Thunderbird mail client for them.  I see that in Thunderbird I can set up LDAP searching, and would like to have this feature point to our contacts server.  I've tried several different settings, and looked all over the web, but could not find the proper way to configure this.  Does anyone know if this can be done, or if not, would have a better suggestion?  Thank you for your time!!

try double clicking keychain acces should launch and ask if you want to install login, system, System roots
A dialog box will launch asking where to install the cert since your configuring a vpn I would put the certificate it in system.

i have a problem, i bought lion but when i want to install he said me i need to "download osx lion server" i'm running with the last lion beta. how to update please?
ps: sorry for my english :S

You apparently are using a version of OS X you did not purchase using your Apple ID. Although you can download Mavericks you cannot install it over your current system. You must repartition your hard drive, then reinstall the version of OS X originally installed when it came new from the factory. That would be on the installer discs that should have come with the computer. If the computer did not come with discs from the factory but OS X was pre-installed (Lion or Mountain Lion) then you can perform an Internet Recovery:
Install Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion Using Internet Recovery
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Internet Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-OPTION- R keys until a globe appears on the screen. Wait patiently - 15-20 minutes - until the Recovery main menu appears.
Partition and Format the hard drive:
    1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
    2. After DU loads select your external hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion. Mavericks: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks and click on the Install button. Be sure to select the correct drive to use if you have more than one.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Can i use osx lion server as a server for my online forum business? if so, what else do i need to get up and running. i know i need forum software. any suggestions?

hello fellow apple lovers. I am in desperate need of advice. I am going to be starting an online forum business in the coming weeks. I was wondering if osx lion server would be able to function as my business server. I also need mac compatible forum software. Any suggestions? Thanks, Bryan

If you have to use old Digidesign now Avid stuff, try to get hold of a DIGI 003 or a MBox pro. The 002 really sounds horrific (no offense) and I doubt it will be of any use in ML, even the MBox pro sounds better……..
By the way, I thought that since ProTools 9 one could use any hardware of choice in combo. If you must use PTools, I would defiantly look for a more up to date hardware and Avid wouldn't be my first choice!
    Have a nice day!

  • Sharing pst (outlook) files over OSX lion server

    Hi,
I can share every type of files via osx lion server. But if I try to share .pst files (Outlook) files and try to connect from a Windows 7 pc to the share. It doesn't work.
    Any idea?
    Best Regards,
    Christian

I found out that I can open the Access db but only if I choose "open exclusively" in the office file dialog box, meaning that other users on the  network won't be able to open the db when I have it open.
So it seems a file lock issue. Anybody having an idea what I could try to change the SMB file lock behaviour on OSX Lion would help me allot.
    Thanks

  • OSX Lion Server - Mail Server All Mail Lost

    Hi
    Can anyone help.
I opened my mail client and found a blank mail box.  It appears that all of my mail that I host on Lion Server has just vanished.  I checked it via my iPhone 30 minutes prior to accessing the mail.app on my imac and all of my mail was visible.  I then checked on my iPhone and slowly watched my mailbox contents vanish on my iPhone.
I'm at a loss as to what has happened and I can retrieve the email via a backup I did a day ago; however I have had some important mail since then and I appear to have lost them.
I'm truly finding OSX Lion Server to be a real pain where as Snow Leopard Server worked pretty well.
If anyone can assist I'd be really grateful.
    Thank you

    Thanks Colin
No one has been able to help so far in the Lion Server forums.  I've logged a call with Apple but so far they have not been able to help.
I've now completely shutdown all Lion Server Services and loaded up Microsoft Exchange in a VM.  Obviously a tad more expensive but Exchange is a far more mature and stable product.

  • OSX Lion Server vs Client performance

I am using a Mac Mini (current generation) with a Drobo 2nd generation (running firewire 800) as a server in my home.  It hosts my itunes shared library, Iphoto library,  shared storage and is the server where all of my macbooks write their time machine backups.  I have 4 macbooks in my house backing up to this server.
I am running the OSX Lion Client OS.  Performance is not great.  I find that I get jerky video performance when watching movies that reside on the Drobo.  In general the server seems slow.
My question is whether there is any benefit to upgrading to the OSX Lion server with regard to performance?  Or are there any other benefits to Lion Server considering what I am doing with it? I have no intention of hosting any wikis or sharing files with ipads or hosting web pages or any of those other functions of Lion server.
    Thanks

    great plan pointm!
VPN is a (almost) secure tunnel to your local network.
Doing it that way will simplify security and administration. Security will rest in VPN encription, and all the tests you run in your local office will work for your remote partners when they are connected to the VPN.
Throught VPN, the use of FTP or other insecure protocols is not potentially harmful, because they travel throught the VPN encripted/secure tunnel.
So finally, only VPN will be available from outside your local network.
This simplify the configuration of your firewall / router, and reduces the risk of having multiple services public on internet.
With this setup you'll also have all the magic that happens when two Mac's are on the same local network (bonjour, Network browsing, you know).

  • OSX Lion Server vs FTP home server

After using macs for so long, this might be a dumb question. I have a small home studio and have the need to set up a server for file sharing and syncing with my two partners, one here in GA and one in New Jersey. I was reading on OSX Lion Server and a few features have been removed or is not up to par with SL Server. Is the Lion Server a good choice for me? No need for email server as we all have IMAP email accounts, syncing them is not an issue. Would Lion Server allow me to remotly log in into my Mac for file editing, just in case? Perhaps something similar to dropbox file syncing?
Is there any other good choice? We're all Macs of course, at home I have a Mac Pro and an iMac that I'm planing to set as a server. I guess my questions is, what's the easiest way? Or Do I just need an FTP Server at home?
    Help appreciated.

  • N00b needs help setting up MAC OSX Lion Server for email.

I recently purchased a Mac Mini running OSX Lion Server and I really don't understand how to set it up as an email server (which was my main goal). Eventually I'd like to set it up to host just about everything else, but I can't seem to figure out how to set up my router and MX records to point to my server in order to host imap mail. I do have a static IP by the way but this N00b is confused... Please help!

Funny you should ask, because I have been spending the day trying todo the same. I just need to know what to enter into my mx record in network solutions. I can send mail, but I can't receive it just yet. Any help would be great.

  • OSX Lion Server/Clients TimeMachine Location

    Dear Community,
I have a problem with Timemachine for OSX Lion Server on a MacMini and hope you can help me out. I have an attached TB drive (Pegasus R6, RAID5) and set up TM sharing for the clients of my small workgroup to this drive. The Backup folder location on the server is /Volumes/Backup-Volume/Shared\ Items/Backups. Everything fine so far, clients can backup into that folder with TM sparsebundles.
My Problem is that when switching "on" TM Backup for the Server itself, I am able to choose the Volume "Backup-Volume", but it backs up to /Volumes/Backup-Volume/Backups.backupdb as a folder, not a sparsebundle.
Don't beat me, I know this is just a cosmetic issue, but why ain't it possible to store them in the same folder, with an equivalent type of structure (sparsebundle/folder). I like to have my system clean and don't like to search on different locations for my backups.
Does anybody know a workaround to manually set the location for Backups, either for clients or server. I don't care which folder it actually is, /Volumes/Backup-Volume/Shared\ Items/Backups/xxx.sparsebundle or /Volumes/Backup-Volume/Backups.backupdb/..., both are fine but it should be consistent.
A different question in this context: If this works out, I will set the HDDs the following way:
    Pegasus:
2*2TB RAID 0 as Share Point "Data-Volume" for fast access, backuped
4*2TB RAID 5 as Share Point "Backup-Volume" as the name indicates for backups :-)
    Mac Mini:
    1*500 GB for OS, backuped
1*500 GB as Share Point "Scratch-Volume" not backuped
    Any objections regarding this setup?
    Thanks, Alex

When you say 'manage', what do you mean?
If you're talking directory services where you're just sorting account credentials that clients use to authenticate, then... oh several thousand... or tens of thousands, because the server is only involved when a user logs in - it validates the user's credentials and passes back details about the user's account.
However, if the user's home directories are also on the server (so the client mounts the user's home directory when they log in) well now you have a file sharing component, and network bandwidth requirements when the user logs in, etc.
Assuming you have 100 active users and a perfect gigabit network (which never, ever happens) then each user is going to get an average of 10mpbs to the server (and to their home directory, for opening/saving files, etc.). Double that to 200 users and you're down to 5mbps each. Consider that most networks never work at more than about 50% efficiency (due to protocol overheads, etc.) and you're down to 2-3mpbs each. That could be an issue.
Of course, if you have 200 users in your directory, but there's only ever 10 or 20 people active at a time those numbers change, but the point is there IS no hard number as to how many clients you can support - it's dependent on multiple factors, and way more than you've listed here.
None of that is directly relevant to whether you need a second machine or not. I'd argue that with 80 users you absolutely need another machine, if only for redundancy's sake if not load. Consider the business impact f that server is offline for any reason and you don't have a spare server to carry the load.

  • OSX Lion Server VPN and Remote Desktop

I can connect with vpn to my OSX Lion Server from the internet to my home network.
With remote Desktop I can reach only the server itself not my other clients in the network.
With my previous environment based on Snow Leopard server that was no problem.
    What could be the problem?

I have an answer, but it has taken a long time to figure it out.
I have a Mac Pro, running behind an Airport Extreme 811N router.  I ran OSX Server 10.6x and after I did the upgrade to 7.5.x firmware on my airport the L2PT service died going thru my router.  I simply switched to the PPTP VPN because it appeared to work fine.  Then I upgraded (or downgraded) to 10.7x Server.  When I did that they got rid of PPTP as an option, and my L2PT connections still did not work.  I went looking online for answers, and found alot of references to the 7.5.x firmware.  I ran a test to see if I could connect to the VPN internal to the LAN - thereby bypassing the router as an issue.  It worked flawlessly.  It definately had something to do with the way 7.5.x handles a packet.
After several trial/error sessions, I figured out that it was the DCHP service on the Airport Extreme that was causing the problem.  For whatever reason if you have DCHP assign the IP address to your VPN server, it will never work.  I took the server out of the DCHP pool, and gave it a static IP.  Once I did that and correctly configured the interface on my server (be sure to setup the DNS correctly if you use static IP) I was able to get the VPN to work flawlessly.  Was even able to turn the Back to my Mac feature back on.
Don't know if this helps, but I have personally logged 3 days on this problem over the last 2 months.  I am pleased it is resolved.

  • I am running OXS Lion.  I cannot puchase OSX Lion Server without buying OSX Lion again in the App Store?

I am currently using OSX Lion.  I went to the App Store to buy OSX Lion Server.  It informs me I have to buy OSX LIon as a package with the Server.  Why do I need to buy Lion twice to get the server?

Have you bought Lion with the same account you're trying to install Lion Server?
Normally you didn't have to pay Lion twice. You only have to had installed Lion with the newst update to load and install Lion server

  • Mac OSX Lion Server Network User Login Issue

We have in the office a server running Mac OSX Lion, and several network users who've all been running happily for quite a will.
About a month ago I was added to the system, and initially we had a few issues relating to the home directory, but we changed 'something' and it all worked.
Fast forward to now, and we've added a new user - Hannah - to our system.
I've added her in the Workgroup Manager, and set her up everywhere I can find on the server. Her home directory creates on the server fine.
She appears in the Logon list on the client machines, and here's where the trouble starts...
Every time she tries to log on, it fails. The logon box just bounces or wobbles as though the password is incorrect. We've tried changing the password, to no avail. We've tried adding new test users - same problem.
We've tried sudo kinet on the Terminal as a local user, with variable results.
I'm at my wits end, and really hoping someone here can help offer some suggestions or advice we can work through to get to the bottom of this.
    Thanks in advance!

Your problems are likely occurring because you added her to the directory with Workgroup Manager.
You should really start avoiding WGM when at all possible as Apple is clearly moving away from it. Because of this, things don't always work as expected when using 'legacy' tools like WGM.
My guess as to what your problem is: When you create a new user in Server.app, two things happen for you automatically that WILL NOT HAPPEN if done from WGM.
First the user is added to the default "Workgroup" group.
More importantly (and the source of much confusion), the user is automatically added to SACLs.
Check the SACL for the user in Server.app, I bet you'll notice that they aren't a member of the File Sharing group like they should be. To solve this problem, you can either delete the user and recreate them in Server.app, or manually add them to the appropriate SACL.
I would opt for recreating them in Server.app if I were you, as I don't trust user accounts that originate in WGM on Lion Server.
