Creating smart groups in Addressbook

Ok maybe I am missing something obvious
I want to create a smart group that contains other groups
say I have three groups
1. aaa
2. bbb
1. ccc
I want to create a smart group that contains all groups whos group name starts with 1.
I only seem to be able to filter on addresbook items such as address
Any ideas
thanks
Jt

Smart Groups are only as smart as the fields contained in their vcards. While there is no way for a smart group to tell whether or not your friends received and Xmas letter, a simple note in each vcard (or even a symbol: %, /, #, etc) would allow you to create a smart group where all cards who, in the 'notes' field carried a symbol would then be added to the smart group of friends who did not received xmas email letters.

  • In a Smart Group in AddressBook 6.1, how do I designate which email addresses I want to use?

In a Smart Group in AddressBook 6.1, how do I designate which email address I want to use for contacts who have more than one address when I'm mailing to the whole group? The "Edit Distribution List" is grayed out.

Thanks, Barney, but that's not really my question. The "Edit Distribution List" is in the Edit menu on my version, too, but I can't use it to edit the email addresses of contacts who are in Smart Groups. In the version of AddressBook I was using before I bought a new MacBook Pro and upgraded to Mac OSX Lion, I could use the "Edit Distribution List" to pick which email address I wanted to use for contacts in Smart Groups with more than one address. Apparently that isn't an option in Lion. The Help menus for AddressBook 6.1 even say that "Edit Distribution Lists" doesn't work for Smart Groups.
Okay. I get that. But some of my contacts have more than one email address, so how do I choose which email address I want Mail to use for these contacts when I send an email to a Smart Group they're in?

  • Sync Smart Groups and Smart Mailboxes across network

Is there a way to Sync my Smart Groups in Addressbook and Smart Mailboxes in Mac Mail across my Macbook and My iMac? I have iCloud.
It would be nice if I did not have to duplicate these "Smart" groups on each computer.
    Thanks Mac Community.

Can you just type out the criteria of the smart group, or post a screen shot of the smart group.
With all the editorializing, I can't figure out what you want to do.
Where are the contacts in the groups, iCloud or On My Mac?

  • ITunes doesn't see smart groups. Also, garbage contacts after sync. Useless

I have an address book on my Mac with about 100 contacts, 5 "dumb" groups, 5 smart groups.
I did the following a couple of times.
    1. Removed iPhone contacts by unchecking the box in iTunes.
    2. Looked at contacts on iPhone to make sure indeed empty.
    3. Opened iTunes again and plugged the phone.
    4. iTunes only sees the "dumb" groups - no smart groups.
    5. Checked "all contacts" and synced.
There are no smart groups on my phone after the sync.
In addition, it creates many garbage contacts on the phone: contacts with no name and just an email address, contacts with "No name" for name and no other fields, etc.
I do not know if it is related to the OS upgrade because I created smart groups on my Mac Address Book after the iOS upgrade.

It is due to the short fall of engineers with iTunes. Sorry. The only fix is to either make "dumb groups" as copies of your smart groups or do away with your smart groups all together. Both options will still require you to remember what new contacts you have entered into your phone and file appropriately manually in your Address Book. You should also lodge a feedback to the company requesting the Smart Group feature sync with iTunes. Maybe if there are enough of us they will fix this. Yes, I may be a little naive in my hopes, since I can't get any response from Apple electronically. I have to spend 2 hour stints on the phone to get things fixed but still not fully functioning due to the limitations of their programs, etc. I have had NO issues with my past smart phones and sadly bought the dumbest one on the market; iphone 4.

  • Address Book Server & Smart Groups

Do these two even work together?
We are running OS X Snow Leopard Server and Address Book.  Clients can see the records as expected.
But clients that create Smart Groups can't use them with records on the server.  You can create a Smart Group, and it will show the desired records in the "Name" column, but no other clients see the Smart Group on their versions of Address Book.  And when you try and print a Smart Group, no records show up.
It looks like regular groups work, but smart groups don't?  Is this correct?
    Thanks,
    Kevin

I have similar problem with Mawerkicks. Did you find some solution since you posted your question in 2011?

  • I am sending emails to a Smart Group created in my address book.   The contact in my address book has multiple email addresses.  Is there a way for the email to go to both addresses?  (ex:  work and home email address under one contact)

In my address book, I have contacts that have multiple email addresses.  (ex:  home and work)   I have created a smart group off of the company name in the contact.  When I send emails, I want it to go to both email address listed in the contact.  Is there a way to make this happen?  Or do I have to have a separate contact for each email address?

I will agree with you on this one. Version 31 and all the fixes so far are a mess. Since I have been here answering questions for a little more than a year now I have learned to wait to upgrade until all the dust settles. I see no end to the dust storm version 31 has caused. I am still on version 24.6 and plan on staying there for the duration. At least until the developers comes to their senses and put out a working product.

  • Is it possible to create a Smart Group in Contacts and email it to one person?

I have created a Smart Group of certain family members and want to email that information to another family member who does not have contacts.  Is there a wauy to do this?

Although this helped, I was unable to get a file of just the contacts I wanted.  This wanted to send my entire AB.
Perhaps I did something wrong, although I can't see what it would have been.  Dragged the icon to the body of email, and it showed the entire AB, in random order.  I was using gmail, so I'll try eMail this time.  Thanks for taking the time to respond.first

  • Duplicate entries created by smart group

I have an Address Book smart group created with 2 rules:
    inclusiveness is set to ALL
rule 1. card is a member of group a
rule 2 card is not a member of group b
In other words I want to emaill everyone in group a except for those who are also in group b.
This works fine EXCEPT that it puts some cards in twice. I can't see why, but it's really annoying. Any ideas?

address book smart groups are notoriously buggy especially smart groups involving any negative conditions. I can only suggest you stay away from them.

  • What's the difference between creating a smart group or a group in contacts? Specifically, I want a friend to email her contacts to create a wedding list invite.

What's the difference between creating a smart group or a group in contacts? Specifically, I want a friend to email her contacts to create a wedding list invite.

On the Apple site explaining the smart group, it says the smart group contacts will automatically update. What does that mean? And for a wedding invite list, what would you recommend using. It's a very large wedding and we want to use those contacts to track invites, gifts, thanks yous, etc.
    Thanks in advance

  • Smart Group not working Correctly

I use Plaxo to sync my Outlook (exchange) to my Address Book. My Outlook hits my blackberry, so I am going to Omit members of the group "Old".
I can add members to the group Old with no problem. It currently has 99 of my 800 contacts. I created a Smart Group that says to Not include cards that belong to Old. When I click on this list, it shows only 95 contacts, which should be much more. I deleted the addressbook-v22.abcddb file and restarted Address Book and it showed several more groups.
My Non Old Smart group is not very smart today.

C, sorry…I read your posts out of order. I see that you have links to your smart groups after all. My apologies.
It's as you say, the course pages load up, but I don't see anything in the smart groups. Just thinking out loud here…maybe the search criteria don't genuinely match anything on your site? Perhaps there are actual matches, but you've hidden content with a new credential?…I accessed both pages using the "Unauthenticated" and "All" credentials. My last/craziest guess is that it has something to do with localization…français versus anglais?

  • Smart Groups in Contacts OSX 10.8.2 causing Freeze

I am having a problem, similar to a few other threads from the old addressbook, but related to the latest Contacts app.
Previous discussions suggest problems with old smartlists causing crashes, this time it is the new Smart Groups.
This morning, I tried to add a Smart Group using the OSX 10.8.2 Contacts app, but upon hitting OK, the program froze.
Earlier suggested list of steps to remove the offending smartlist begins by exporting the contacts to a separate file. Since, at the moment, the contacts app is unable to load without freezing immediately, the option of exporting the contacts to a file is not available.
Alternate solutions suggested, involve deleting certain group related metadata - but I am unable to locate the files mentioned.
AddressBook-v22.abcddb and the smart group metadata file in ~/Library » Application Support » AddressBook » Metadata
How bout the simple solution of having a program where the Smart Groups simply work?  If I create a smart group it should just work!  Not result in the freezing of the app!  OK now having said that...
Any suggestions for how to Eliminate Smart Groups - ideally without eliminating groups generally! (perhaps using third party apps to clean up the Smart Group mess?).
    Thanks

I'll just add that I have one smart group that causes the beachball effect. Can't select or right click it to delete it without the hang happening.
It's my - "contacts that aren't assigned to any other group" group.
Will try to discover how to reset/remove a smart group.

  • Address Book lock up due to a smart group

I accidently created a smart group in Address Book which seems to trigger an infinite loop or lock condition. As a result, it's impossible for me to perform any action in the address book (including modifying or deleting the problematic smart group), since the whole application locks up as soon as I start it.
    Smart group (match all):
    - Card is member of any group
    - Card is not member of group X
    - Card is not member of group Y
Is there any way to delete a smart group from the command line? Also, how can I report this bug?
Here's a screenshot of the smart group properties: http://www.joaopinheiro.org/tmp/addressbook.png
    Thanks!

I have found two solutions to this problem, so I'm linking them here in case someone else runs into the same problem:

  • Delete a smart group -

I have created a smart group that references another smart group. And it doesn't work. If I click on the group nothing happens, and now if I attempt to delete the smart group, I get the spinning color wheel of death. Then I have to force quite Address Book so I can use it again. Since I don't need the smart group anymore, I would like to delete it, but can't.
Does anyone know how to delete the smart group that references another smart group?

    I had the same problem and couldn't find a solution. However I have now found this out;
    First, close Address Book.app.
Then, go to ~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook/Metadata. In this file there is a file for each Contact, Group and SmartGroup. The SmartGroups have a file extension of .abcdg. If you locate and double click a file ending with that extension Address Book will open up and highlight that SmartGroup. I'm assuming that the one you want to delete will immediately crash the Address Book. Once you locate it drag this file to Trash.
Now go locate the ~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook/AddressBook-v22.abcddb. This is the database file of your address book, but if you delete only this file or the Metadata folder your address will be rebuilt from the other so we need to remove this file as well, so drag it to Trash.
    Open Address Book.

  • Smart Group from a selection in Address Book.

In Address Book, is there any way to create a smart group from a selection or an existing group? It seems that a smart group can only be created from "All Contacts". But I don't want to start with "All Contacts" for my smart group, just an existing group.  You can do "New Group From Selection", but you can't seem to do "New Smart Group From Selection".  Is there any way around this?

You need to go to ~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook/Images and Control-click on each file and open it using Preview. Then you can export the image if you choose. Just keep in mind that these will be thumbnail quality, so don't expect large images, either in file size or physical size.

  • Cannot send email to Smart Group from Address Book

I created several Smart Groups in Address Book but I can't use any of them to send email. When I right-click the group name and choose Send Email, it opens my default email program (Thunderbird) and puts only the name of the Smart Group into the To: field, not the actual addresses.
If I try to actually send the message, I get the error that (name of group) "is not a valid e-mail address because it is not of the form user@host. You must correct it before sending the email."
What am I doing wrong? How can I get it to paste the actual addresses and not just the name of the group? I looked at the Edit Distribution List window and all the addresses are there.
    I'm using OS X 10.5.7, Address Book 4.1.2 and Thunderbird 2.0.0.22.
    Thanks in advance.

What is the exact message you get when sending fails -- does it say there are one or more invalid addresses, or what?
Having a name in the list without email address or possibly one separated by comma between last and first might result similarly in an invalid address, and Mail will likely refuse to send to any. But if the message is from the SMTP, that might depend on the provider's policies for that.
