Creating Space after a Paragraph Style

Okay, all, this may sound weird. All I want to do in CS4 is have an extra 4 pt of space after a particular paragraph style. Specifically, my paragraph style, Body Text, already has "space after" specified at 3 pt. Fine. But, for example, when I have three paragraphs of just this style, I want the three paragraphs separated by an additional 4 pt of space. (There is no consistency in documents when this situation occurs.)
At first, I thought it might be possible to do this via a nested character style. Nope. Back in FrameMaker, I used to do this manually, whenever I wanted extra space. My trainers would add paragraph tags (ugh).
Still a newbie...
Thanks!

Maybe I'm really missing your meaning here. When I override a style setting to get more space below, I add space below the *paragraph*. I don't adjust anything about the last line. This is no different in Framemaker. In Framemaker, you can add space above or below a paragraph, either as part of a style (what FM calls a "format") or as a style override. You don't "adjust the last line of a paragraph" in either program.
There's one important difference between FrameMaker's paragraph
spacing and most other DTP or WP tools: Space between FM paragraphs is
NOT ADDITIVE. Space below a paragraph is not added to space above the
following paragraph. In FM, the larger space wins. (I think Ventura
has this feature also, or perhaps has the option for additive or
larger-one-wins.)
If the issue is to make inter-paragraph spacing work non-additively
like FM, please file a feature request for this as an option, at:

EDIT: The forum was unavailable for a while, and my email response was bounced. By the time I discovered the rejected mail, I saw Lizbeth's mention of having used Based-on paragraph styles. Probably the based-on style caused the mysterious behavior. The based-on property style information is only visible in the define/modify style dialog box. I'm going to enter a feature request for an indicator for the based-on property that will appears wherever a style's name appears, and, if possible, displays the name of the based on paragraph, character, and object style. Master pages do show the based-on master letter on the page icons in the pages panel, but they lose their own letter. I'll also ask for this feature.

  • Pages for iPad - how do I create space after a paragraph?

All I want is one line space after each numbered paragraph in a document.
When I press return twice, the numbering restarts!
    Help.
    Thanks.

On the iPad, documents are saved directly in the app in which they are created. Your Pages documents are saved automatically as you work  on them. If you quit working on the document right now, your progress is saved on that file. No need to save like you would on a computer.
When you close Pages and come back to it later - all of your documents will be listed in thumbnail view on the first screen. Tap on the document that you want to work on and it will open.
There is a help feature within the app. Tap on the wrench icon in the upper right corner and select Help from the resulting menu.

    Hi stephanie,
    These are unrelated questions/statements.
Space before and space after a paragraph are controled in the Text Inspector, as you've found out.
Pages will create a page break whenever there is no room for another line on the page. That break can come anywhere in a paragraph.
You may be thinking of Widow and Orphan prevention, and the other Pagination controls, found under the More button in the Text Inspector. (If that's what you found, then thanks for the refresher! I hadn't been to that pane for awhile, and had forgotten the variety of pagination controls available.

  • Space after in one style affecting the style before it

I have bit of text like this:
    Bold head
    regular body
when I add space after to the regular body style, it has the effect of adding space after the Bold head, but when I directly apply space after using the Control bar, this doesn't happen!
my regular body style has no space before.
Can anyone see why space after in one style would appear to affect the previous style.
when I say "previous" and "before" I mean in the order they appear relative to each other.
    thank you!
    John

No, there are no manual overrides. I tested with a manual formatting just as an experiment, but then removed it immediately afterward.
InDesign as with many other programs will indicate a modified style with a little "+"  None of my text shows this + sign next to their styles.
    Thank you!

  • Using baseline grid and "space after" for paragraph formatting

I'm using InDesign CC on a MacBook Pro Retina. I'm designing a document and want to use a baseline grid to align text. I also want to use the "space after" option in defining a paragraph style. I'm using 10 point type on 15 point leading. The "space after" is defined as 7.5 points.
If I try apply both the baseline grid alignment and the "space after" specification, I essentially lose my defined 7.5 pt "space after" to a much larger space because the first line of the next paragraph sinks to the baseline grid line below it. I end up essentially with 22.5 pt instead of 7.5 pt.
Are these two functions incompatible or is there a way around this that I don't know about?
    Thanks for any advice.

There's no way around it. Best is to calculate your various leading,
space before, and space after values to make sure everything falls on a
baseline. That way you avoid having to rely on "Align to baseline." You
may also want to turn on "skip by leading" in Preferences>Composition if
you've got graphics with text wrap in them.

  • "Space After" Between Paragraphs

    Hi,
Is there a way in InDesign to set "Space After" and "Space Before" like you can in Quark?
I tried to look in all of the menus and couldn't find anything. It's probably there, just can't find it yet.
    Please advise.
    Thanks.

The one on the left is space before, the one ont he right is space after. It's the same field whether you access it through the control panel or the paragaph panel. Note that the control panel is in paragraph mode, not character mode (In CS3 or CS4 the control panel may show these controls in either mode, depending on screen size and customizations, but they'll always be there in paragraph mode unless you've tuned them off).

  • Create TOC javascript using paragraph style

    Hi,
i want to create javascript for TOC in new indesign document or book. but i want to use input style for paragraph styleHi,

"It didn't work for me" doesn't work for me. Always, always, always, state why it doesn't work for you.
Did you try to use it, but could not get it to work?
Or, do you need to do something special that the built-in function does not do?
It should not be extremely hard to make a javascript version that does (roughly) the same. You could try something like this:
For every paragraph style you want to include (most likely all sorts of headings),
Search for all occurrences, and store the text, its page number, and (important!) its story offset in an array.
You need the text because that's what will appear in the TOC.
You need the page number because, well, that's what the TOC is for :-)
Most important: you need the story offset so you can reconstitute the original order of the headings. You can only search for one level of heading at a time, so without sorting, you would get "Heading 1 -- Heading 1 -- Heading 1 -- Heading 2 -- Heading 2 -- Heading 2" (etc.)
When you have gathered all of the information for your entire book, sort on story offset. (I forgot, it's for a Book, right? You need to store a document id as well, so you can sort throughout multiple documents.) (See Ed.)
Then write out every text in the right order, followed by its page number.
The IndexMatic script that Marc points out should already contains lots of the logic described here -- esp. searching and storing page numbers.
[Ed.] Thinking about it, a Book (multiple documents) should *not* cause any problems, and you don't need to know in which document some text was found. Simply sort the paragraphs on their page number; only when these are the same for more than one paragraph, sort just these on their Story Offset. Logically, there should not be two headers with the same page number in two different documents.

  • How do I put a space after a paragraph in Pages 5?

This is something I did frequently in older Pages versions and in Word. Where is the setting for space before and after paragraphs?

It's in the styles panel, but you have to click the triangle / disclosure icon for "Spacing".  This will expand the spacing section to show spacing before and after paragraph settings.

  • Space after paragraph "returns"

    Hi!
I've made a template so that I don't have to keep telling Pages not to make space after each paragraph, but... Each time I use a style (like Heading) it automaticlly sets the space after a paragraph to 12 pt. This is annoying - can I change it?
    Thanks

    You are most welcome.
I found the pdf Pages 2 User Guide accessible from the front help page to be the most useful thing. It's 250 pages but there is a great deal of white space in there. It contains most of the useful conceptual stuff you need that is absent from the individual help snippets.
Don't ever feel guilty about posting a question though. That's what these boards are for.

  • Paragraph styles dialogue is empty. I'm unable to load or create new styles and have them show up.

I've used paragraph styles in Indesign CS4 since 2009 and yesterday (6-10-14) I noticed the paragraph styles dialogue was empty. I figured somehow I must have accidentally deleted or cleared them. I then proceeded to attempt loading them from another document. After "Loading Paragraph Styles..." via the drop-down in the upper right corner of the dialogue box nothing showed up.
I then proceeded to create a new style it to never appeared in the list—it remains empty.
    Any ideas?

    Hi,
I'm trying to create my first script (using javascript)... The idea is to increase (or decrease) space after a paragraph (0.5 mm). I can't find anywhere how can I get the space after value of a selected paragraph... Could someone please help me?
I'm brazilian... Sorry about my bad english!
    Thanks.

    Hi.
    try this code
    var para = app.selection[0].paragraphs;
    try {
      para[0].spaceAfter -= 0.5; // or += 0.5
catch(e){alert(e);} // space after and space before must >= 0

    $.writeln(para[0].properties.toSource().replace(/,/g,",\n"));

  • How can I indent a paragraph WITHOUT creating spaces above or beneath?

I am using Dreamweaver CS3 on a G5 Macintosh running OS
    10.5.5.
I selected a new HTML document (Dreamweaver opened it as a
CSS) and pasted text from a MS Word document.
When I "Indent" ALL of the text everything stays the same
except that it is ALL indented.
BUT when I "Indent" only one paragraph then that paragraph is
not only indented BUT there ALSO appears an extra space before and
an extra space after that paragraph.
What this is doing is inserting <blockquote> before and
    after the paragraph.
How can I "indent" a paragraph without any spaces appearing
    before or after the paragraph?
Also can this be easily done from the Design page?
I tried inserting a tag by pressing the "tag" button on the
keyboard but that did the same thing as using the "indent" function
(i.e. also inserted spaces before & after the paragraph).
BTW: I am a novice, so please try to make it as simple as
    possible.

When you paste from Word, you often get line breaks instead
    of paragraphs.
    I think that's the problem.
    Instead of this -
    <p>this is a paragraph</p>
    <p>this is a paragraph</p>
    <p>this is a paragraph</p>
    <p>this is a paragraph</p>
    you get this -
    <p>this is a paragraph<br />
    this is a paragraph<br />
    this is a paragraph<br />
    this is a paragraph</p>
In which case the symptoms are completely understandable.

  • Space after Paragraph: How much picas equal a blank line in Garamond Regular 7.5?

I'm using Indesign CC and  would like to add a blank line after every paragraph in my document. I found out how to do that, but the only unit I'm offered is picas. I could probably switch to inches, but that doesn't really help me. My main text is written in Garamond Regular font size 7.5 and I would like to have blank space after each paragraph equal to a blank line written in that font with that size. How do if find out much large a blank line with those font settings is? I guessed and it seems to be equal to 0p7, but it would be great if I could do that without guessing blindly. I'm glad for any help.

I am not sure to understand.  Garamond (or any other typeface) 7.5 equals to… 7.5 pts. But the size of a typeface is measured from ascender to descender, so it does not give you an accurate idea of the real height of the line. But leading is measured from baseline to baseline and this corresponds to the measure you are looking for. Once again, you need to know the leading value and you have to enter this value for the space after.
And 1 pica is equal to 12 pts.

  • Reflection applied to character/paragraph style?

Can anyone point me in the right direction to create a character or paragraph style for using the web 2.0 reflection on text? example below...
    Thanks!

Apologies not necessary. That previewColor property has been a mystery for quite some time, and when I finally found out what it is supposed to do, it seemed to be so bug-ridden that I quickly steered away from it and I gave up attempting to make any sense of it. But your script just avoids those bugs popping up!
As I said in the IDS post: it's rather sad the Adobe team gave up on further developing this great hidden feature into a full one; and it's downright worrying that they left that legacy code in CS5 and later, so it could get infested with all those nasty little bugs. It leads me to think: how many more 'dead' code is there, in CS5, 5.5 and now in CS6? Could that be the reason later versions are so much slower and more buggy than my trusty CS4?
    (Point in fact.
In CS4 and earlier on the Mac, all plugin resources are gathered into neat, small packages inside a single large indexed file. That makes sense, because every single plugin resource is just a couple of bytes long -- say, a single icon, or a single string "Menu Item Name". With CS5, the programmers suddenly took a Lazy Turn and wrote out every single resource as a single small file. That means that
    1. (Annoying!) Since hard disk space is allocated by the kilobyte (typically 4Kb chunks), 10 tiny resources totalling 1 Kb now will suddenly occupy 40 Kb of disk space. Sure, hard disk space is cheap. Apparently, it's even cheaper than doing some programming -- or even just using the load code from the last version!
    2. (Frustrating!) Locating, opening, loading, and then closing a single file takes time and resources, but after a file got loaded into memory, you can do with it whatever you want. Locating, opening, loading and then closing each of the dozens of small files per plugin takes lots of time. Is that the reason CS5.5 starts up so incredibly slow? Jongware sez: yeah for sure it won't help.
    /Point in fact).
