Creating storage repository in OVM 3.0.x

Hi,
I am new to OVM. I have installed OVM 3.0.1 version Manager and Server.
And I am trying to create a Virtual machine (domU) and want to install one of OEL template as guest OS.
Now I am in the process of creating a storage repository where in which all VM's data is stored like
VM templates, VM config files...
It is mentioned in the OVM 3.0 User Guide that I can use local storage to create a storage repository.
Does that mean I have to use a separate disk and attach it to the OVM server.
I have installed OVM server on /dev/sda2 and I have a lot of space on same physical disk.
Is it possible to create a repository on the same physical disk on which OVM server is installed?
I mean same /dev/sda but in another partition.
Thanks

Is it possible to create a repository on the same physical disk on which OVM server is installed? No.

  • Creating a storage repository

    Hi,
I'm having an issue creating a storage repository in VM manager 3.0.1. I have 2 blades connected via fiber channel to SAN storage. When discovering the server, the storage gets detected automatically as an "unmanaged fiber channel array". I am however able to see the LUNs presented. In this case its only one 300GB LUN. I followed the documentation and was able to
    1. Discover the servers (2 blades)
    2. Register the storage (1x300GB LUN)
    3. Create the VM network (2 VLAN networks)
    4. Create the VNICs (4)
    5. Create the server pool
However when I try to create the repository and select a physical disk, it does list any physical disks under the Fiber Channel storage. It should display the 300GB disk but that's missing. Has anyone seen the same issue before?
    Thanks

I was able to resolve the issue. Looks like when there is an existing file system on a LUN, OVM doesn't create the repository. You have to delete and recreate the LUN and that resolved the issue
    Thanks

  • Can I create and use more than one repository on OVM 2.1.5

The version of Oracle VM I am using is 2.1.5 .
I wonder can I create and use more than one repository on OVM 2.1.5. Because I want to install different GOS on different disks.
I know in Oracle VM 2.2 we can use following commands to realize that.
    a. #/opt/ovs-agent-2.3/utils/repos.py –n /dev/mapper/mpathxp1
    b. #/opt/ovs-agent-2.3/utils/repos.py –r UUID
    c. #/opt/ovs-agent-2.3/utils/repos.py –i
And other repositories can also be mounted and found under /var/ovs/mount/UUID.
But in Oracle VM 2.1.5, seems just one repository can be created and mounted. For example:
At first, I create a repository using mpath1p1:
    a. # mkfs.ocfs2 /dev/mapper/mpath1p1
    b. #/usr/lib/ovs/ovs-makerepo /dev/mapper/mpath1p1 C "cluster root"
    c. I can find the repository has been mounted under /OVS.
But if I want to use "/usr/lib/ovs/ovs-makerepo /dev/mapper/mpath2p1 C "cluster root" to create another repository, and check the mount status using command "mount", these two disks are all have been mounted under /OVS.
"# cat /etc/ovs/repositories", only mpath1p1 with UUID was recorded there.
After reboot, only repository with mpath1p1 was mounted under OVS.
Can anyone tell me how to use more than one repositories on OVM 2.1.5. Do I have to install all the GOSs on the same disk and repository.
    Thank you very much.

Now I've known how to create different repository. They will be mounted under /OVS/UUID. Thanks.

  • How to use the local storage space in OVM 3.2.1

    Hi
We have installed OVM 3.2.1 in a server , which has 1TB HDD and 350GB RAM and we have installed the OVM manager in a seperate machine.
I am able to identified the server in the manager console but how can i use the local storage space.
Kindly help us to solve this issue.
    Regards

    Hi,
if you want to import an ISO image, why you mount it?
    after you complete your installation.
1- discover server. (if your installation is finished good, then you found your server in Onglet Servers and VMs / unassigned servers)
2- Go to Perspective / Physical Disk to verify that detect the second partition
3- if it's good, then crearte a pool with no Clustered Server Pool.
4- create a repository on your physical disk.
5- Go to ISOs in your repository and click import iso image.
Now, verify that your apache/httpd server it is working or not.
    1- after you install apache/httpd
2- you shoud verify if it is running or not (pgrep httpd) if not start it (e.g. service httpd start )
3- copy the ISO file under /var/www/html
4- open your browser and verify.
and at this point i think it is good.
then copy the url to import the iso file with Oracle VM Manager
    the URL Look's like http://IP-Address/image-iso.iso
you should verify that the IP-Address is reached from the Oracle VM Server.
    and that's it
I tested it: and in my case:
i have copied the windows iso image:
    cp ../windowsXP.iso /var/www/html/
and now my URL is like * http://IP-Address/windowsXP.iso*
I hope this can help you
    Best Regards

  • Create new repository fails in 3.1.1

I have created a repository and presented it successfully to my server pool. However, I have just created some smaller iSCSI disks, I can see them in /dev/mapper/* and in the output of multipath -ll on the server.
When I try to create a new repository with any of these disks, I get the following errors:

ANy ideas of what may be wrong here? How to get past this issue? I´ve mounded the disk in order to see that it has already been formatted as OCFS2, but it doesn´t have the folders that a repository should have.
    Thanks!

    Oracle VM 3.1.1 - PROBLEMS

  • Cloning a Template to create a VM in OVM 3.0

I used cloning process to create Virtual Machines from the imported Templates. I create two VM's and the time it took to clone the VM's is very long. For a Template that has two images totalling about 16GB, cloning took about an hour. And for a Template that has three images about 70GB, cloning took more than 4 hours. Are these expected times? Is there a way we can reduce the amount of time it takes to do cloning? While going over the documentation, I found the following section that talks about 'thin clone' and is the fastest cloning method. I didn't find any place in the cloning definition creation process to define this. Is this a mechanism that is internal and is used based on the Repository chosen (during 'Clone Definition' creation process).
"A thin clone means copies the virtual machine files and only take up the mount of disk space actually used, not the full specified disk size. Thin cloning can only be used when cloning from and to the same repository, and when the storage used for the storage repository is non-generic (for example, a Sun 7000 or NetApp Storage Connect plug in). Thin cloning is the fastest and most efficient cloning method.
A clone can also be performed using two other file copy methods: sparse copy, and non-sparse copy. These two cloning methods can be used when cloning from and to different repositories, and when the storage used for the storage repository uses a generic Storage Connect plug in. These cloning methods are slower than thin cloning, but more versatile."
Also, during the clone definition creation process, I was given an option to chose between sparse copy and non-sparse copy (non-sparse copy being default). What exactly is the difference between the two? When do we use one option over the other? Will the time it takes to clone changes any significantly if I choose sparse copy instead?
    Thanks in advance.

Thin cloning is available on OCFS2-formatted repositories on iSCSI or FC, but not NFS. On NFS, the best you can do is a sparse/non-sparse copy. A Thin Clone on OCFS2 is near to instant, takes a few seconds on my test lab, regardless of how large the template size is.

What exactly is the difference between the two? When do we use one option over the other? • Creating a repository

    Dears ,
i want to create repository in order to can upload an employee pic ... but i dont know the settings or what configurations shall i select ... could u plz help creating the repository ?
1- i want to know which storage type shall i use , i have the following :
              - sap system database
              - http content server
              - logical repository
              - rfc archive
              - structure storage system

Yes, but it is a multi-step process. First, you have to do a design capture of the table definitions into your repository. Start the Design Editor. If you haven't set up a database definition under the DB Admin tab, you'll need to do that first. Then, choose the Generate menu, Capture Design of ... and choose Server Model. The Source of Design Capture will be DDL Files - in other words, your table scripts. Follow the wizard.
Once you have your table definitions in your repository, you can create a Database Diagram, which is quite similar to an Entity Relationship Diagram. Just drag your table definitions from the navigation tree into the gray diagram area to the right
Or you can reverse engineer your table definitions into Entity definitions and do real ER Diagrams. You can't do that in the Design Editor, so close it, and open the ER diagrammer. Use the Table to Entity Retrofit utility, found on the Utilities menu, and follow the wizard. This will transform your Table Definitions into Entity definitions. Then you can start a new ER diagram, drop down the Edit menu, and Include your new Entities on the diagram.

You need to supply the "Key Store Location", "Key Store Password", "Private Key Alias" and "Private Key Password' to use socketssl.
Also please make sure that the content server has enabled "Use SSL". You can configure it using the enterprise manager.

  • Cannot Create Data Repository with VM Server (3.1.1) Cluster

    Dear All,
I have 3 Servers (one for VM Manager, two for VM Servers) and 1 Storage (Sun Storage 6180 (Fiber Chanel) and map volume as Default Storage Domain ).
I try to create my 2 VM Servers as Cluster on VM Manager but it has problem as below:
Case1. I can create a Server Pool with cluster by select Clustered Server Pool by select physical disk, add 2 servers then create data repository but it got problem: in page Create a Data Repository: Select Physical Disk is shown blank not see a physical disk.
Case 2. when I create server pool by uncheck Clustered Server Pool box (None Cluster) and add 2 vm servers then create data repository, the physical disk is shown but got error message:
"OVMRU_002030E Cannot create OCFS2 file system with local file server: Local FS vmserver1. Its server is not in a cluster
    Wed Dec 26 01:27:12 ICT 2012"
Please kindly give advice for this.
    Thanks and regards,
    Vandy

    1. So you're trying to create a server pool and a storage repository on a single LUN that is direct attached? Don't your software on the 6180 allow you present multiple LUNS from disk group? Think about it. You create a clustered server pool on a single LUN and then try to use that same LUN for repository.....
    2. How are both hosts attached? Are there multiple HBA cards in your 6180? Is so, how many? If you have redundant cards you should be using multipathing for redundancy.

  • Error while creating the repository

    Hi MDM Guru's
I have Installed SAP MDM 5.5 SP06 Patch 1 on Solaris with Oracle 10g

    Needs to resolve this Urgently.

    Hi Dilmit Chadha,
NO I did not. When I said I changed the DBMS Settings that means. In the SAP MDM COnsole, right click on mounted MDM server, click on DBMS Settings, Input the DBMS Server, username and passowrd  and on the screen I changed the Data Path and Index Path.
As per me Data Path is for creating the data file of Oracle tablespace for the Data part of Repository. and Index Path is for creating the data file of oracle for the Index part of the same Repository.
Following error may also help which I see in the server log at the time when I tried to create the repository.

  • How to create a repository(not just custom) using your hard drive

I don't know if many people know about this, so I am giving this a shot. There are three major articles on wiki.archlinux.org: Custom local repository,
Using a CD-ROM as a repository, and Offline Installation of Packages. These are available online through the WIKIs at archlinux.org.
I was first confused because when I was reading "Offline installation of packages", I didn't know what these ".db.tar.gz" files where. I came mainly from a Debian / Ubuntu
background (I actually tried many distros before this), so getting used to the way the repository works and no graphical install manager for it. However, I enjoyed a challenge and
I found out that these are database packages that contain descriptions and locations on where these files are located. The ones on the ftp server are already compiled. I don't know if,
however they are compiled with the most recent versions.
With all that said, I thought you had to have it all in one directory in order for this to work, but as it turns out, location is not really an issue. I decided to have a directory reside on the root.
I chose root because it's only for the install of my own packages. I could have done it as a seperate user account, such as "repos" in PCLinuxOS (another distro I tried). I didn't want to have a seperate account for this. Therefore, I created "/root/repository". Within this directory I created directories for all repository archives. I basically did a "cd /mnt/dvd" and migrated to the particular repository directories. I would copy all the "pkg.tar.gz" files into their respective directories with "cp * ~/repository/<name-of-dir>". For intance, I started with the "core" directory, because there was some things I didn't install in the core directory during installation and if the packages needed it, it was there. This follows for the rest of the directories, such as "community", "testing", and "unstable", etc.You can go to the ftp mirrors to find out what directories are available. The main point is that your files should be in the format ".pkg.tar.gz". These are package files that get converted into a sort of database format that as I mentioned, informs the system the description and where the files are located, and so on.
The command to perform this, is "tar -xvf /root/repository/core/core.db.tar.gz *.pkg.tar.gz". You can replace core with whatever repository you are adding. So, for example, "extra.db.tar.gz" would be in the "extra" directory. This information is located in the "Offline installation of packages".  The command to create this database is called, "repo-add".
The format for this command is "repo-add /path/to/dir.db.tar.gz *.pkg.tar.gz". So, if it's the core packages you would "cd ~/repository/core" and "repo-add core.db.tar.gz *.pkg.tar.gz".
Then, you need to edit the "/etc/pacman.conf" configuration file for pacman. I basically would comment all out except for the repositories I need. So, for example "[core]" and "/etc/pacman.d/core" would tell where normally the servers are located for these files. This information is located int the "Custom local repository" article.using the "repo-add" command.
Furthermore, I edited each server file located in "/etc/pacman.d/<repository>" where repository is core, extra, etc. I would perform,  "nano /etc/pacman.d/core" for example and comment out all servers. I then add a "local repository" by typing in "file:///root/repository/core", saved it, and then did a "pacman -Sy" to update the repository database. Now, I can do "pacman -S <package-name>" where package-name is whatever I wanted to install. Voila! Please let me know of any suggestions, questions, insights, or comments. I hope I'm not missing anything in this article. I do remember using "rm -rf * in the "/var/lib/pacman/<repository>"directories and using "tar xvf <repository>.db.tar.gz". I don't if that something to do with it, though. Be careful with the "rm -rf *" command, because you can erase your hard drive if you are not careful, for those who aren't informed.
P.S. Please note all these are done with the root user.

Maybe you could either edit the existing wiki pages where they were not clear to you, or else add a new wiki page, or both. Certainly give the whole a clearer (visual) structure, and (if they don't already exist) add links between the connected wiki pages.
Yes that is partly what I mean. Further you could get rid of the information that is not really needed to follow the guide (for example what the command 'repo-add' does. People could if they are interested look it up in the script itself, or you could add it here and link to it).
And yes a bit of structure would be nice. You don't have to nessesarily call it 1,2,3, as long as it has some kind of structure in it (the visual point is very important here). You could take a look at existing wiki pages on the web and see how most of them (not all of them are good of course) are structured.
That's a good point, too. How do I found out what articles are more effective? I am doing research on this particular matter at the moment and came across articles that have tips on technical writing. Could this help in the long run? Or, is it better to get feedback from other users and improve that way? In other words, do first, and ask later, as one user point out?

  • Help! how to create a repository correctly of owb?

I have installed oracle11 in the directory c:\app\***\product\11.1.0\db_1 and installed owb in the directory c:\app\***\product\11.1.0\owb11gr1. When i tried to Create a Repository Using the Repository Assistant, the system gives out an error message:OWBSYS is not granted access to owb home/owb/bin/admin/rtrepos.properties:Please run UnifiedRepos/reset_owbcc_home.sql specifiying the path of the Oracle Home from which the Control Center Service is being run.
Then I run the script reset_owbcc_home.sql and put in "C:/app/***/product/11.1.0/owb11gr1" according to the prompt.
But it still can not work, it gives out another error,"there is no table or views"
Can anyone tell me how to create a repository correctly?
    Thanks!

With your database 11g install OWB is already installed under the ORACLE_HOME's owb directory. You should/could have just used it.
I'd suggest a cleanout and start again, here are the steps:
    1. Close any open OWB
    2. from db home,
    Stop runtime service - cd owb/rtp/sql sqlplus OWBSYS/OWBSYS @stop_service
    3. drop your target user, design user
    4. cleanout OWBSYS, recreate:
    cd owb/UnifiedRepos
    sqlplus using your sysdba
    @clean_owbsys
    @cat_owb <tablespace_of_your_choice)
Now run reposinst.bat from your database Oracle home
    Cheers
    David
