Creating the fastest possible home network given my components

I realize that I can't upgrade the wireless speed of my PowerMac G5 dual 2.7GHz. At least this is my understanding based on what I've read. I just ordered a new iMac, and I want to do what I can to make transfer speeds between the PowerMac and the new iMac as fast as possible. Right now I connect to a 802.11g router wirelessly using an external antenna on the back of my PowerMac G5 (I also use a 2004 iBook G4 on the same network). If I upgrade my wireless router to a 802.11n compatible router and plug my PowerMac into the router with a CAT 5 ethernet cable (no more wireless connection for the G5), then would I be able to transfer files between the G5 tower and the iMac at 802.11n speeds? Would it be even faster if both the PowerMac and the iMac are hardwired to the router? I will have external drives connected to the PowerMac and external drives connected to the iMac, and I would like to be able to have fast access to files regardless of which computer I'm using and where the files are. I currently move files across my wireless network between the PowerMac and the iBoook, so I'm not worried about whether or not that will work, but as I expand my equipment I'm curious about the practicality of referencing files over the network when working on media projects (Final Cut, After Effects, etc.). Seems like I should do what I can to make everything as speedy as possible. I want to avoid copying files to always have local versions to work on. I would prefer leaving things where they are and just access them over the network. But I'm not sure if this is truly the way to go. Am I asking for trouble if I have an After Effects project on the iMac that is referencing source files on the external drives connected to the PowerMac?
I'm very ignorant in this area, so any thoughts (in layman's terms) would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

Okay... I think I may be ready to put this topic to rest.
I'm going to share what my offline friend had to say about the suggestion of just connecting the two desktops to each other via ethernet cable:
{quote}It's not just a regular cable between two computers. It has to be a "cross-over" cable. They look the same, but have different mappings between the 8 pins.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethernetcrossovercable
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812119156
That would be the minimal cost solution, but excludes additional connections. The laptop, for example, could not be wired in for a high speed connection.
It also makes for a more complicated configuration for the Macs to support two network interfaces. You'll have to figure out how to assign the IP addresses and then add static routes so that only the appropriate traffic is directed over the wire and not through the primary interface. This can be tricky to set up properly.
How does the iMac know to send traffic to the PowerMac over the wire and not through the wireless router (which is the primary interface)? Each desktop will have two IP Addresses. Sorting this out and getting it working the way you want it may not be so simple.
ifconfig, netstat and route are the commands you'll need to get familiar with.
The bridge suggestion is the least complicated from a sysadmin POV. After the bridge is configured, everything should just work...
But, it's always nice to have a cross-over cable available to try stuff out. Just be sure to clearly mark the cable so you don't confuse it with a regular patch cable.
{quote}
I'm now thinking I'll go back to the more "elegant" solution of using a gigabit switch, and then I'll just have to decide whether I want to use a long ethernet cable from the router to the switch, or if I want to keep things tidier and avail myself of a wireless bridge.
Either way, I think it's possible that we ("I") may have beat this horse to death. I'm happy to hear any further thoughts from anyone, but at this point I think I am ready to move forward.
Thank you Bruce and Kenichi!

  • Is it possible to have an HP and Canon wireless printer on the same wireless home network?

I presently have a Canon MP560 printer on my wireless home network. I do not have this printer installed on my computer. I purchased an HP 3520e-All-In-One hoping I could have both on my home network.  My os is Windows 7 64bit. I tried to install the HP 3520e, and received the following error message - "Your printer failed to join the wireless network", and said the issue was that MAC address filtering may be enabled on my computer, which it is not.  It is disabled.  Question:  Is there a workaround to have two wireless printers on the same network, and if so, what is it?  Thank you so much for your help.

    Hi,
I actually have 3 printers from 3 vendors on my home network. I have tested using MAC filter and w/o MAC filter, no problem at all. The MAC filter should be on the router, not from your computer. Have you checked that ? My suggestion: use a computer on the network to connect the printer using USB cable then setup from there. The printer will use EXISTING setup from your computer and you won't need to enter security key.
    Regards.

  • Connecting to mpd over the Internet (outside home network) - error

I'm trying to connect to an mpd instance running on my home computer from my computer at work.  I have an OpenVPN server at home, and so I can securely connect to my home network from work.  I've set up a second instance of mpd and icecast at home, and I'm trying to connect to this at work.  I can connect to the extent of being able to pull my library, playlist info over, but I can't actually seem to play anything.
When I look at the mpd error messages, I find:
shout_output: Failed to open "exelion HD mpd stream" [shout]: problem opening connection to shout server localhost:8000: Login failed
output: Failed to open audio output
I'm trying to connect using Cantata (which I use at home and like).
    Things I've played with:
originally in my mpd config I had:
    user "source"
I tried commenting that out and just letting mpd use whatever the default user is, but that didn't seem to help.
The other thing I wonder about but haven't tried is different settings for "admin-user" in the icecast config.
    I currently have
    <admin-user>my-home-usernamer</admin-user>
.  Should I change this to "admin"?  Does it matter?
The passwords match between the mpd and icecast configs.

  • Why does the iPhone lose home network connection?

My new iPhone 5 keeps losing my home network connection. Any advice? I've tried resetting network settings, turning the phone off and on again and turning the router off and on again. Thanks.

I'm looking into that possibility.......have a cordless phone in the office, a PC, cell phones, etc. Will clear them out and recheck. The maddening thing is that the iBook is totally bulletproof even in that environment. Why would the iMac be having these issues, but not the iBook? Is Airport Extreme more robust, or that much better than Airport?
Even now, the iMac shows no network - yet I'm writing this on the iBook right next to it, and it's had no network interruption whatsoever.
Do you have any knowledge of those "error" notations from the syslog? Could they be pointing to anything else?
    Thanks much.....

Hi there can anyone help me to find my Mac on the TV. My TV is a new Sony and is conected wireless to my home network, it finds my PC after I had set up the media funktion in the sharing area. But it does not find my mac, is there also something to enable? in the sharing folder is everything checked....thanks a lot

    Happy to help out! thanks.
I dont know if OS X have a Multimedia protocol that allows your tv to connect, if your tv can do XBMC then you can check this out: http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title=How-to:Install_XBMC_for_Mac

  • How to use EXPDP to create the dumpfile in shared network drive.

    Hi,
I have Oracle 11g ( 11.2.0.3 ) DB server in SUSE Linux machine.
I want to export a schema of 300 GB size using EXPDP utility. Thing is I dont have enough space to hold the EXPDP dumpfile in the same server.
Hence I would like to know is there any way where I can create the dumpfile on to some other mapped drive from the Linux server.
This is quite urgent, please some one help me.
    Regards
    Suresh

    Hi Suresh,
It it's windows you want to map to linux take a look at samba to do that:
    http://www.linux-noob.com/forums/index.php?/topic/1404-how-to-mount-a-windows-share-with-smbmount/
I've not actually exported directly to a samba mount but i assume it will work......
the other alternative (if you have an 11.2.0.3 db on the windows server also) is to use this approach

  • Trying to create own server on home network/DNS setups.

I am trying to set up my silver door mac it has 80 gig hd/2 gig ram/dual 1.25 GHz PowerPC G4. I have a 802.11n airport extreme wireless setup, with external hard drive connected to the USB port. I have the mirror door mac connected to the airport extreme with a ethernet cord but do have the option to go wireless but have it turned off. I have several other macs in the house but they are accessing the internet through the airport extreme. I have been now trying to make the DNS on my silver door mac and not been able to get any result. I have found that I don't half to have a static IP address but how do I do this without a static IP address. I was wandering if there is a web site I can see what I am looking or for some good ideas how to do this. I want it for web streaming, hosting my own web sight, email. I know I need a domain name looked into this far. But I seem to be getting lost after trying to convert what I think is pc based web sight for domain names to covert there info over to mac. I am some what lost but some what close. dose anyone have any idea where there is a mac web base domain sight and if there is any terminology web base sight to trying keep terms and information strait. This might be a little veg please gentle on response just need reading material to try and straiten things out term wise.

If you don't have a static IP address, don't bother.
What you want can be done, but it's going to be a lot harder to do, and isn't going to be sustainable. You may also find running a server on your connection violates your agreement with your ISP (especially if it's a residential-type service) and either they'll block incoming traffic anyway (many do), or they'll cut you off.
So first see if you can upgrade your service to include a static IP - you really only need 1. If you can't then look to host your site elsewhere.
Any domain registrar (where you register your domain) will handle hosting that domain's DNS - you use their servers to answer lookups about your domain). Many will also offer web hosting and email hosting for a few $$s more.
If you're on a dynamic IP address (even if your ISP doesn't actively block you) you will run into problems, especially with mail (most remote mail servers will reject mail from a server on a dynamic IP address. This will make it difficult for you to send mail, as well as receive it.

  • Beginner question: Can I create a hybrid home network between an ethernet-connected iMac and an airport connected Macbook Pro using a hybrid router?

I recently acquired an friend's used iMac, I don't know anything about networks and all I can find is how to create a Wi-Fi home network but nothing about hybrid Ethernet/Wi-Fi networks.
I have the iMac connected via Ethernet to the wireless router.
I connect via Airport with my MacBook Pro
I would appreciate if anyone has any pointers as to how I can start setting up a network between my ethernet-connected iMac and WiFi connected Macbook.
    Thanks!

ethernet and airport/WiFi are just transmission media for the same network. If you can get internet on both computers, they are networked. Using the same router = same network.
So now, what is it you want to do? Share files between them?

  • Not Connecting to Wired Network and Forcing the loss of all Connections on the Home Network

Just got a new G550 laptop  w/Win 7 OS. Tried to connect to wired router and got message "network cable not connected". Recycled laptop and router and came up with router connected to the laptop. Same message after search and identify steps finished. I then noticed I lost connection to the net/router with my other home networked units as well! Tried another cable, same results along with losing the entire home network connection. Disconnected the G550 from home network, via the cable, and the home network reconnected without any intervention. Tried another reboot directly connected to the cable modem, no go there either!
I also rebooted with the wireless search shutoff and got the same problems as on the wired attempt. Thought it might have been the NIC card so I exchanged the system back at the store.  Sorry, same problem!!

I have a very similar problem... New Lenovo G550, running Vista Home Premium 64-bit. Right from the start it causes my TrendNet TEW-432BRP router to crash every 10 seconds. I bought a new DLink WBR-1310 and experience the same problem. Connecting to either router through either a wireless connection or a LAN cable connection causes the router to crash every 10 seconds. The router crashes, reboots, establishes a connection with the laptop, communication starts and then the router crashes again.
    I am looking for help.

What is the best NAS/home network solution?
    Current Network:

You already have the hardware, but the laptop may still be too power hungry or noisy. In that case a second hand eeebox something  or a self built VIA C7/ VIA Nano / Intel Atom based system may be a solution (see http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=61662&p=1).
If you want as little configuring as possible take a look at amahi, Freenas (or its coming Debian-spin off OpenMediaVault). They are  basically all-in-one homeserver distros. If you want to take the DIY route then I can recommend these apps:
    - music and video streaming: mediatomb +djmount (upnp protocol) / FireFly (daap protocol) / mpd  (audio only). Or if you just want to watch/listen to your media on your pc that is stored on your server then a share could be enough.
    - print-server: not sure, cups maybe?
    - central pim: : this is pretty complex to set up right. You need things like a
    pop3/imap mailserver -> dovecot / qmail / postfix
    groupware app (shared calendar, webmail, tasks etc) ->  Zarafa / Zimbra / open-xchange.com / Sogo /  Group-Office / Citadel ... )
    synchronization using caldav/icalendar
mobile synch of contacts/calendar/mail via ActiveSync or syncML protocol ->  funambol or z-push. Zarafa is one of the few options with a free  ActiveSync connection l believe.
    - automatic mounting: can be done in many ways (smb/nfs/webdav/sshfs). I have a sshfs share mounted through /etc/fstab.
    - WAN streaming: can easily be done with mpd. the latest version has streaming server built in so you don't need to set up a separate Icecast streaming server.

Can I use 2 airport extremes in the same in home network, each at a different ethernet drop point?

Hi - without knowing anything else about the network and assuming that you mean that they are connected via ethernet to the main router, the answer is yes - they would be configured in bridge mode to "Create a Wireless Network" (because they are hardwired) with the same name and password as the home network.

  • Home Sharing Folder Empty on all client PC's on Home Network

I have Home Sharing 'on' on all my local PC's (3 of them). I can see the Shared Folder on each of my PC's in iTunes, but when I click on the folder from a non-host PC, NO songs, movies or TV Shows appear! Folder and sub folders (music, movies, TV shows, etc,) are all empty.
Home Sharing DID work just fine for a year. But sometime within the past month or two - perhaps after an iTunes "update" - it no longer works. All settings checked - "shared" my Library in Preferences, turned on Home Sharing on each PC, all are on the same simple home network. And again, the Shared Folder IS visible on each PC - there is just no content in the folder! I am offically stumped. Please help.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hey ArnoDWG,
Thank you for the question, and welcome to Apple Support Communities.
I understand that you are having issues with home sharing, and that these issues are isolated to your PC. I also want to thank you for providing information about your security software, as this may be the cause.
For more information, see the following resource:
    Troubleshooting Home Sharing
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2972
While the entire article provides great help, the most relevant information may be Section 5: "Check Firewall Settings":
If you have a firewall enabled in your router or computer, make sure that the firewall is not blocking communication between your computers. Home Sharing uses TCP port 3689 and UDP port 5353 to communicate with shared iTunes libraries.
In addition, Apple TV and Mac computers will use port 123 to set the time automatically. Incorrect date and time on either the computer or Apple TV can cause errors for Home Sharing and connections in general.
If you are unsure whether your router has a firewall or the required ports open, test additional devices or another network to help isolate the issue. If the devices tested work on another home network, it is your router or network configuration.
If you use another security/firewall software on your computer or router, follow this article or contact the manufacturer or check the documentation on how to open TCP ports 123 and 3689 as well as UDP ports 123 and 5353.
    Thanks,
    Matt M.

  • What is the fastest way to find a Node in an xml ?

    Hi all,
We have a procedure which has to process huge XML documents (files of up to 250Mega).
Without going too deep in the algorithm, I need to read data from legacy and build nodes in XML.
In the legacy data I have written in tabular form the xml hierarchy
    For example Root-Branch1-SubBranch2-Leaf1
I need the fastest possible algorithm to point to SubBranch2, so that I can append Leaf1 Node, in the example.
Can anybody suggest me the right approach ? for example I wonder if I can use together SAX for finding the parent node and DOM for appending new Nodes ? or can I use XPath ?
    Any suggestion is really welcome!
    Thanks
    Francesco

Not sure if XPath is built on top of DOM or SAX in most implementations, but that would be a major decider. If DOM, you cannot possible hope to ready that many megabytes into memory on a consistent basis (especially if your system is handling other requests). If SAX, then memory should not be as much of an issue and may be a viable option.
However, if you are only descending two or three levels into the hierarchy of a document, XPath would really only be a 'convenience' feature. It would be trivial for you to write your own SAX parser to descend to this level. At the same time, you would have a custom XML serializer (just outputing the strings read in from SAX) that would append additional markup according to your requirements.
Due to the size of your document, memory could be an issue. This will tend to make you gravitate towards SAX.

  • Foscam not in BT HH3 device list on 'home network'

I have brought a Foscam Wireless Cam and it is working fine wirelessly over the BT HH3 home network.
However, the device is not shown in hub manager in 'home network'.  I am trying to Port Forward so I can access it when out and about.  I have allocated it to port 8091 but I cannot see the device in 'home network' to click on it and ad port forwarding.
Please help before I throw it out of the window

You need to assign it a static IP address using the camera interface, then port forward to that static IP address. You need to assign an IP address outside of the DHCP range of the home hub.
