Creating thumbnail of a video file

hi all,
i'm thinking about creating a thumbnail for a video file (my format is 3gp) -> i think it's gonna be like the first frame of the video to become an image file
how can i do that? any1 pls help...
btw, when i record a video in K610i...is it always like this: there's a "junk" display on the right(or bottom part if you use ur phone in normal way) part of the screen?
i once found out that by fixing this 'error' the only way is to upgrade the firmware of the K610i, my question is : is there any other ways to fix this 'error' ??

the web server (which has ffmpeg installed) do the job for you...
a servlet or anything else do a Runtime.getRuntime()exec("<ffmpeg_command>");when a video arrives on the server, store the video in n formats and create a thumbnail
for the video. search on the web, you can easily find lots of stuff...
or do it yourself with ffmpeg if you have few videos...

JMF has the capability of capturing frames from a video, but it requires you to load the video, start to play the video, capture a frame, and then shut everything down.

Imovie is not generating thumbnails for MPG video files

I have what I hope is a quick question with an easy solution. I'm using iMovie '09 8.0.6 to make a movie for my parents of their granddaughter. Imovie has generated thumbnails for all my video in iPhoto (most of which is .mov format), but two short clips (about a minute in length each) were apparently taken with a different camera and are in .mpg format. For some reason, imovie is not generating thumbnails for these .mpg videos, though in the past I have never experienced a problem here. What is wrong? What can I do to get these clips into iMovie or have iMovie generate these thumbnails?

No, the orientation is not the issue, The first set of 4 imported videos were from a GoPro 3 camera, and the one that was lost doing an "update thumbnail" operation was also a GoPro3 fie.
Just now I did another experiment, I chose to update thumbnail from a video file created with my Pentax WG-3 and it worked.
I updated thumbnail on a horizontal and verticle video from my Galaxy S3, and now those are also gone with no thumbnail...
So far the only one that actually works for me is the Pentax video, which is a MOV file. , the GoPro 3 and Galaxy are mp4 files, so it's possible that the mp4 format has something to do with it. This is very frustrating losing my thumbnails like this.... Luckily I have not deleted ver11 yet.
I hope they repair this issue soon.

Not to my knowledge. It seems it takes a snapshot from about the 10th second of the movie and creates a thumbnail for it. On a Mac the finder thumbnail shows the first frame of a movie, both don't seem to be able in getting customized.
It will be down to a good naming convention I'm afraid. Not having CS4 installed anymore but on Bridge CS6 .mov files play on an reasonable sized scale in good quality in the preview window, maybe that will help you?

You can right click on your Desktop and select New Folder. In Finder File > New Folder should work too, not in front of my Mac.

I can preview the AVI files from my Nikon D5000, but have not figured out how I might create a still image ( other than stopping the movie, and dragging to copy ) Have tried searching adobe, this forum, have not found more info ion this.

Photoshop Elements Organizer 11 crashes due to deadlock in the thread wait chain when creating thumbnails for *.mts (AVCHD) files

Hi,
the Elements Organizer 11 creates a deadlock in the wait chain when generating thumbnails for more than a handful of MTS (AVCHD) files.
After importing AVCHD files from my Canon video camera, the organizer using default settings always crashes. I was able to narrow down the problem to be caused by thumbnail generating.
After deactivating the automatic generation of thumbnails, the organizer does not crash any more upon launching .
Of course, working without thumbnails is not very practical. The next resort is manual trigger of thumbnail generation by selecting "update thumbnail".
If I manually trigger updating of thumbnails for files one by one, then it works for quite many files before crashing again.
Selecting thumbnail update for multiple files at once has a much higher likelihood to crash.
This does not seem to be related to particular file contents: a file that leads to crashing once may be flawlessly get a thumbnail created at the next attempt.

My questions:
- has anyone experienced the same problem?
- is this a known issue with Organizer 11?

I have Premiere Elements 11, Photoshop Elements 11 installed and not experienced any other issues with these applications.
Playback of said AVCHD (*.mts) files works flawlessly, i.e. I do not have any codec or performance issue on my PC.
Deactivation of anti-virus software has no significant effect. I have excluded video directories from scanning anyways.
Have deactivated face recognition, visual search and smart tagging in the organizer.
Have also disabled hyperthreading in the BIOS.
Using Windows XP compatibility settings for PSE somewhat improved the stability, but did not completely eliminate crashes.
Additionally, it signnificantly slows down thumbnail generation and a progress indication window becomes visible during thumbnail generation, which is barely noticable in native Win 8.1 mode.
Officially, Elements 11 is compatible with Windows 8.1.
There is a knowledgebase article related to Elements 6, which recommends to disable multi-threading and to enforce execution of Organizer on more than one core.
This reduces the problem a little bit, but thumbnailing more than a handful of files still leads to crashing.
By means of the task manager, I analyzed the wait chain of the process PhotoshopElementsOrganizer.exe:
Every time the fault occurs, it is caused by a deadlock in the wait chain.

When you said that you unisntall all other codec, what do you mean?

I have desable the automatic thumbnail and it still crash.

IMovie gets stuck while creating thumbnails for iPhoto Videos

Hello,
I've just got iLife 09. When I opened iMovie (with all the latest patches) it asked me if I want to create iPhoto thumbnaisl. I said yes and iMovie started to do something. At a certrain point the progress bar stopped moving and didn't move until I killed iMovie. If I do the same now, not even the progress bar show up and "remaining time" keeps empty.
Can anyone tell me how to convince iMovie to create those thumbnails?
My iPhoto contains about 6000 images and 42 iPhone movies.

Give this sequence a try, it may help you isolate your issue:
_*RUN SOFTWARE UPDATE*_
Before starting the steps below, make sure you are running the latest software update.
_*REMOVE 3RD PARTY PLUGINS*_
Some 3rd party plugins may be interfering with iMovie.
Here are the only 2 files IN MY QUICKTIME FOLDER:
. . . . . . . . . . . . / Library / QuickTime / AppleIntermediateCodec.component
. . . . . . . . . . . . / Library / QuickTime / AppleMPEG2Codec.component
If you do have more than the 2 files listed above, temporarily move the "NON APPLE" components outside of the QuickTime folder, Reboot the Mac.
_*TEMPORARILY CREATE A NEW IPHOTO LIBRARY*_
_ Quit all your Apps
_ Hold-down the [Option] key and click on the iPhoto icon
_ Click "Create New.." and enter a new iPhoto Library name -- I used "Empty_Library"
_ Click "Save"
_ Quit iPhoto
_*FRESH LAUNCH OF IMOVIE*_
_ Delete the iMovie Plist: /Users/ {your username} /Library/Preferences/com.apple.iMovie8.plist
_ Launch iMovie
Does iMovie starts-up properly without your old iPhoto Library?
If so, your old iPhoto Library may contain a video file / files that are not compatible with iMovie.
_*TRY RE-LOADING YOUR OLD IPHOTO LIBRARY*_
_ Quit all your Apps
_ Hold-down the [Option] key and click on the iPhoto icon
_ Select your old iPhoto Library from the list
_ Click "Choose"
_ Quit iPhoto
_ Launch iMovie
Does iMovie starts-up properly with your old iPhoto Library?
If not, try removing the bad video file / files from your iPhoto Library (if you know which one it is).
Just make sure to back-up those files before removing them from your iPhoto Library.

Finder hangs on "thumbnail view of video files, relaunches itself

Within the past week I upgraded from 10.4.11 -> 10.6.5 on a 3-year old MBP (Intel). Sometimes when viewing Finder windows with video files everything hangs and I am treated to my favorite sight, the cheerful spinning beanie..... Sometimes when it hangs, Finder relaunches itself taking about 10 seconds to do so. This is mostly a hiccup, since Snow Leopard Finder restores the individual windows with their directory paths. (This happens several times a day, and would be really annoying if relaunch meant resetting everything to User directory level like it did in earlier OS versions.)
Possibly related is on occasional black screen "blink" lasting not more than 2 seconds. This is unsettling.
Related question - does Finder use QuickTime, or some limited implementation of QuickTime, as a resource to display thumbnail video? Could this be a symptom of the utility trying to do too good a job showing video thumbnails (consequently sucking up too many processing resources), which I often don't want to look at anyway?

Update on this issue -
No serious problems except one time the screen went black and wouldn't come back (usually no action is required before the screen refreshes itself.) Lately, I've seen it go black about every 2-3 days with no major interruptions in operation. The obvious question is this: Does this indicate a bigger problem, perhaps with hardware, which will make my computer crash for good in the near future?

Broken film strip thumbnails on my video files

I need help, please? I have downloaded a bunch of videos from my Panasonic camcorder to my organizer in Photoshop Elements 6 and all the thumbnails are a black and white broken film strip..they have a file extension of MOD. I can double click on them and see them, but there is no sound. These are very important videos of my Grandson and I don't want to lose them. All the other videos from my Canon camera are in AVI and work fine. Can someone help me retrieve these videos? Try changing the file name from .mod to .mpg
If you can’t see the file extension as part of the name try this in Windows:
1. Open the explorer window where the folder where your files are located.
2. Select the Tools à Folder Options
3. Click the View Tab
4. Uncheck the option to “Hide extensions for known file types”
5. Click “apply or apply to All Folders.
6. Click ok and close
7. You should now be able see all the file extensions when you browse to your folder of videos.
8. Right click on a filename you wish to change and select Rename
9. Change the last three letter to mpg and hit return.
They should play in Windows Media Player or QuickTime and hopefully be recognized by Elements unless you need a missing codec.

How to create common normal format video file in captivate 5 - either FLV or MP4 or AVI?

I am still using Captivate 5. After reinstall on to new machine, update always fail. click help, it direct to 404 page not found.

APE 10: How to select a frame be the thumbnail for the exported video file?

I have Adobe Premiere Elements 10 and using Windows 7. I create a title and place it as the first clip in the Sceneline. When I export the video and look at the file using Windows Explorer folder view, the thumbnail shown is a frame from another clip and not the clip containing the title. The file created is indeed the one intended and in the correct folder. When I double-click on the file the video is played and the first thing I see is the title. So the video created has what I expect. Go figure.
I'm starting to think that there might be a Windows setting that determines how Windows Explorer picks the frame to be used as the thumbnail for video files. I have not found any reference to it so far.
Here is some new info...
If I replace the first clip that has the title with another clip, then the thumbnail is created from that first clip. As soon as I add the title as the first clip, then the thumbnail is created from the second clip.
OK ---- I just found information that states that the thumbnails are created by Windows and placed in a file that act as a cache for the thumbnails. This prevents Windows Explorer from generating the thumbnails each time the folder is viewed. In my computer (64-bit Win 7), the thumnail cache files are stored in folder "C:\Users\Ramon\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer". They have an extension of ".db". You should have known this would be caused by some registry entries were modified incorrectly by some software, especially third party codec pack.

Video files exported with QuickTime Pro 7.2 can't be transferred to iPod

If I use the default Export to iPod export choice in QuickTime Pro 7.2 to export video files and add them to my iTunes 7.3 library, when I try to sync them to my 5th generation iPod with video (November, 2005), I just get the "can't be played on this iPod" message. I can create, transfer, and play video files on my iPod if I create them a different way (by using iSquint, ffmpegX, or No Frills DVD2iPod, for example). Exporting to mpeg4 using h.264 results in the same problem, even though I've used settings I know worked before. The export to iPod export choice does not offer any customization of settings. Although this problem is new, I can't be sure the immediately previous version of QuickTime Pro didn't also have the problem, but I know I have successfully used QuickTime 7 to create videos that could be transferred and played on my iPod in the past. How can I use QuickTime Pro 7.2 to create video files that will be compatible with my iPod? Thanks.
