Creating two libraries

I want to put the majority of my music onto my external hard drive along with the TV shows and movies I have purchased. It’s getting to the point where I only have 12 gigs free and I don’t want to erase anything for good.
But I would also like to keep a small library of songs stored on my PowerBooks hard drive so I don’t need to turn my hard drive on everytime I want to listen to some music.
I was wondering if I can run 2 libraries off of 1 iTunes, so I can still sync my iPod to the library that has the videos and movies when the hard drive is turned on. Is this possible?
Also if I can do this can I select which library new things go to, so if I were to purchase a new TV show on the iTunes store I could make sure it downloaded onto the external instead of my Powerbook HD.

Simply hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. Use the create option to create a second library. Then, to switch between libraries, use the same technique to choose which library - using the Locate option this time.

I have a new imac. I created two libraries, one for me, one for my kids. how do I copy songs from one library to the other library?

Not easy unless you're just content with adding some files to the other as new files but lose playlists for those files, and playcount, and ratings, etc.  If you're okay with that, you can drag the media folder from one library to the other. If you use default settings and want to duplicate the media, just drag it. If you want to add the media but leave it where it is currently located, hold down the option key while dragging to the library window.

  • Update created two libraries, which do I keep

Hi all, just trying to get my bearings with the new iMovie. I was previously using iMovie 9.0.9. I just got a new Macbook Pro and am now on 10.0.6. After transferring my events and projects over, when opening iMovie it said they needed to be update. I clicked ok. First thing I noticed is that it warned me that some of the media couldn't be found, but then I can't find anywhere where there's missing media. Does it not flag that in anyway? But on to my real question...
It's now created two libraries. One says "iMovie Library" the other says "iMove Library 1" seemingly a duplicate. I'm curious which one I'm to be using, if I can get rid of one, etc. I'm staying on this machine in the new iMovie so won't need to edit in the old version. Furthermore, when I go click "new movie" it's asking me what Event to put the new movie in, as if I can't create a new event with that movie. That seems odd to me...a new movie seems like it would be it's own event. Also, it gives me options to save this movie into events in both libraries.
So, I'm pretty confused. The iMovie I came from seemed pretty straight forward. This one has me stumped. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Thank you so much for your reply. The more I dig around, the more I'm confused.
Okay, so just a bit of background. I previously stored my "movies" on an external, to save space on HD. Projects were on my HD, but it referenced source material, the footage, from my external. After looking more closely, it looks like "iMovie Library" was created on my Macbook Pro HD, but "iMovie Library 1" was created on my external. Not sure why that would be. And one is much larger than the other. Is this based on the footage? I'm just confused why two were created. Here's an image:
In this image, you can see in the 2008 and 2007 folders there there's a "Barcelona - Paris 2" in 08 and a "Barcelona - Paris" in 07. I've scrubbed through, it's the same footage.
I've noticed that "iMovie Library 1" on the external is 17.02 GB (which I'm thinking it should be b/c that's where I stored all of my footage) and on my MBP HD "iMovie Library" is 2.38 GB.
I guess I'm just trying to streamline. As I look in my sidebar, it's just crowded and not very intuitive in terms of easily identifying. The 2 libraries seems redundant, I'm just trying to get it to a point where it looks less messy, everything is located in one library, and it seems straight-forward...which I guess is what Apple tries to achieve with most things. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  • Creating two libraries or how to tranfer a library to another computer

Alright, I have two options. My sister and I have been using the same iTunes library but have separate iPods. We obviously have different tastes in music so I was wondering if there is any way to create two libraries on the same iTunes or on the same computer? And if not...is there any way to transfer a library to a different computer without having to change the info on every song again? Thanks.

  • Two libraries; one for each iPod

How do I create two libraries in order to sych with two iPods?

To create or access a second (or more) library, hold down the option key when launching iTunes. In the dialogue box that appears you'll have the option to create or navigate to another Library.
However there are a couple of recommended methods for using more than one iPod on a single computer. Method one is to have two Mac or Windows user accounts which by definition would give you two completely separate libraries. Each account has it's own iTunes folder, Library and iTunes Music folder and you load it with CDs etc just as you did with your original one.
Method two is to set your preferences so that either one or both iPods get updated with only certain playlists within one library. Have a look at this article and see what you think and go for whichever you feel suits your needs best: How To Use Multiple iPods with One Computer
Another option when using a single library is to set one or both of the iPods to manual update: Managing content manually on iPod
Choosing the update option "automatically update selected playlists only" (called Sync Music - Selected playlists in iTunes 7) allows you to create a playlist specifically for each iPod and drag the tracks you want into it. If you tire of the list and want to change it, you just add or remove the songs you don't want. The ones you take out out remain in the library to be used by the other iPod. Make your playlist a Smart playlist and limit the size to just below the advertised capacity of your iPod ( for example, around 3700MB for a 4GB or 1800MB for a 2GB Mini or Nano). You can read more about playlists at these links:

  • ITunes - Can I Create Two Databases???

I've loaded the software, and all is fine...
but if wanted to use 2 Ipods (ie. his and hers) - can I create two libraries - so we each have our own material on our IPODs?

It might be easier with playlists? A playlist per iPod? Or a few playlists per iPod. You can choose which Playlists to update with when you plug in your iPod.

  • I created two iTunes libraries on my mac mini and would like to merge them into one library. What is the easiest way to do this?

I created two iTunes libraries on my mac mini back in the day. I would like to consolidate them into one iTunes library. What is the easiest method to do this? I do use i-Match to access all my music from  iCloud, if that makes any difference.  Thanks. Mark

Thanks for the reply. When I created the 2 libraries years ago I would hold down the options key and had 2 library names to choose from. Now it just shows a lot of files when I do that, With over 7,000 songs I think I will just look for the few songs from the original library I used to use that still interest me, if they don't show up in my default current library. Thought there would be any easy was to integrate all my music files into one library. I am definitely not going to spend days manually doing this, but thanks again.

  • I have created an iTunes account on my current computer for my daughters ipod touch and tried connecting my ipod nano and it won't sync and says that it is associated with another iTunes library so how do I merge the two libraries?

I have created an iTunes account on my current computer for my daughters ipod touch and tried connecting my ipod nano and it won't sync and says that it is associated with another iTunes library so how do I merge the two libraries?

    You do not merge libraries.
iDevices sync to one and only one computer.
If you want a single library, you manually move the content from one library to another... all content will still be associated with the Apple ID it was acquired with.

  • In Aperture 3, how can I easily move entire projects out of my main Ap Library into other libraries?  My Ap library is running super slow because it's overloaded l so I have created two new libraries, but can't seem to move the projects into them

In Aperture 3, how can I easily move entire projects out of my main Ap Library into other libraries?  My Ap library is running super slow because it's overloaded, so I have created two new libraries, but can't seem to move the projects into them?

    Hello Annabel,
To move entire projects export them as Aperture Libraries, and then import those Libraries into the other Aperture Library:
Select the Project in the Inspector, then
File -> Export -> Project as Library
    In the other Library do:
    File -> Import  -> Library/ Project
But I am not quite convinced, that the size of your current Aperture Library is responsible for the slowness of Aperture - Aperture is designed to cope with huge libraries.
You may want to post your hardware setup and details of your library, and some of the hardware experts here may help you to find the reason for the slowness.
A huge library should only be a problem, if the projects are too big, and if you have many, many smart albums at the root level of your library.
So keep the projects small, and try to move some of your smart albums to lower levels in your folder structure (then Aperture does not need to scan all of your images to build the smart album).
Other reasons for Aperture's slowness may be, e.g.
An overfull system drive and/or external drive (keep at least 20% of your drives empty)
    lack of RAM
a corrupted Aperture Library, that needs repairing
Have you checked those options, before you split your library? It would be a pity to split it, for you would loose the ability to browse all parts at the same time, to use all your images in the Media Browser, etc.

  • I created two Aperture libraries from one large library. Some of the photos in library

I created two Aperture libraries from one large library. Some of the photos I want to keep in library #2 are in the trash of library #1.  If I empty the trash of library #1, will it affect the same photos that were moved to library #2?  I moved over 2,000 photos to create library #2.  Their names are showing in the trash of library #1.

Are your images referenced or managed? If your partial libraries are referencing the same original files as the library you exported them from, be careful. Deleting the orignal on one library #1can delete it from the  library #2. But if your originals are managed by Aperture inside the Aperture library, you can delete them.
I moved over 2,000 photos to create library #2.  Their names are showing in the trash of library #1.
If you are not sure about referenced or managed, select one of the images you want to keep in the library where they are not in the Trash, then use the command "File > Show in Finder". If you can reveal them in the Finder, they are referenced and probably are shared between your libraries.
Or turn on "badge referenced files" in the Preferences > Appearance settings. Then your referenced images will show arrow badges.

You should be able to accept this message, it will cause existing music, photos (not camera roll) and videos (also excluding those in camera roll) to be removed and replaced with those from this computer. All other user data on the iPad will be unaffected.

  • HT4927 I have OS 10.7.5 and iPhoto 11 -9.4.2 . My iPhoto is (was) split into 7 libraries created via iPhoto Buddy . Two libraries are now missing marked  n/a in Buddy.  Exactly how may I restore these 2 specific libraries from Time Machine.

I am looking for simple step by step assistance to restore 2 missing and important (to me) libraries in iPhoto via Time Machine.
Used iPhoto Buddy to create 8 libraries and this worked well until yesterday. Now these missing  libraies are just marked n/a. The other 6 appear OK.
Don't resally know what I'm doing with Time Machine it has just sat there on a separate hard drive backing up... never had to call on it before.
Thanks for any help - about 6000 images missing.

  • I have two libraries on the same computer but different logins, there is my user account for the computer and then there is my grandma's, how do i get my music without having to resync on both libraries?

this computer has two logins, my grandma's (which is the administrator) and mine, itunes is on both logins but on my login i have some music there and hers i have my other music.. i want to be able to redownload my music on my ipod touch with out having to resync back and forth between libraries.. how do i combine the libraries because if i go with one or the other i lose my music i have purchased, on both libaries the music belongs to me not my grandma,
Also, a few weeks ago, I loaned the IPOD to somebody and they told me that evidently the IPOD had been hacked and that it had lost all the music.  When I got it back, I re-synced it and got some of the music back.  After talking to other people, I now suspect that my "friend" tried to do something he wasn't suppose to to and the IPOD shut down or that he was trying to create an Apple ID of his own without paying for it.  Now that I have it back, I just want to get the music back that I paid for that is already associated with my ID and that is in my two libraries.  I can see them in there (on the computer), I just can't access them to download  them on the IPOD.  Can you help?

There are actually a few methods for using more than one iPod on a single computer: How To Use Multiple iPods with One Computer
Just to summarise what's in the link above:
Method one is to have two Mac or Windows user accounts which by definition would give you two completely separate libraries.
Method two is to set your preferences so that either one or both iPods get updated with only certain playlists within one library. If you've had no success with this you can have a look through the guide on this page: Loading songs onto iPod automatically
Another option when using a single library is to set one or both of the iPods to manual update: Managing content manually on iPod

  • How do I create multiple libraries & use with multiple ipods?

    Hi All,
My wife and I have different tastes in music. Currently we use different user log ons to seperate our libraries. It's a complete pain because there's no other reason to use seperate log ons.
We'll soon be upgrading to a new iMac and I'm wondering if it's possible to have two libraries operating in the one itunes sesssion?
    So here are my questions:
    1) Can I have two libraries sourcing the same music files?
    2) We each have an iPod, can it be set to only update one of those libraries, but still automatically update when connected?
    3) If we create playlists, will they be associated with only one library, or both (my preference is one, of course)?
    4) I'm pretty sure iPods can be set so my iPod only updates my playlists, and my wife's iPod only updates her playlists - is that correct?
    5) If we have seperate libraries, can we have seperate ratings? (Our opinion of what a five star song is is different)!
Of course, for the above questions, if the answer is 'yes' please let me know how to do this. I've had a look through the itunes manuals online, but they don't seem to have any information.
    Cheers, Chris

    Chris,
I have the exact same situation, and I have tried Doug's iTunes Library Manager, but it doesn't work for me. The first workaround I tried was to set up two smart playlists to group together any music that only one of us liked, which could then be checked or un-checked (control-click) depending on which iPod is being synced. This is clumsy, and if you aren't careful the Recently Added playlist will still "contaminate" your iPod.
Last night I just made a new library for my wife (hold down Option when starting iTunes), copied everything over using the Add to Library command, exported all the playlists using the Export Library command, deleted all the music and playlists she doesn't want, and synced her iPod. It took a while to erase and re-sync, but it is now synced to HER library, and she doesn't see any music she doesn't like.
Tonight I will do the same for myself. I will have, then, three libraries which can be selected by holding down the option key when starting iTunes: Mine, My wife's, and the main one with everything (called Library) All the music files stay on an external Firewire Drive. There is no way to toggle libraries from within iTunes, you have to quit and start it again holding down the option key.
Podcasts are another story, and I haven't quite figured them out yet.

  • How to Share music between two libraries / Apple ID's?

So my boyfriend and I have moved in together and will soon be utilizing the same computer. I have an Apple ID and music library, he has an Apple ID and music library. I would like to create a separate login to the computer so we can still keep our separate ID's / libraries for syncing purposes (making sure we each have our own Calendars, Contacts, Photos, etc...) but would like to Share music with one another and be able to add it to our iPhone's without having to buy or download it twice.
    A couple of things below
What's the easiest way to transfer all of my current information to his computer? External hard drive?
What's the easiest way to share music and / or apps while keeping individual Apple ID's?
Will the Home Sharing option work here?
OR, will we have to create a new Apple ID, transfer our information to that new ID, and create two separate libraries off of that?
Any and all advice is appreciated. Trying to make this as easy and painless as possible

Thanks so much identd! So with that first option, we won't have to double download the music correct? I just want to make sure it's not taking up too much space on our computer either. It will always be updated b/c the iTunes library folder's will be public now correct?
