Creating video transitions on completion

Hi there
I'm creating an Interactive DVD with many speakers and videos. Each presentation is up to an hour long and has been cut up into it's chapters. I'm using a combo box to select the chapters by creating an action sequence, and on select changing the source of the video. I need the the first video to begin autoplaying and jump to the next video upon completion and if a different chapter is selected, the next video to play after that one's completion. I have tried many different ways but can't find a way to do this. I have tried settin a delay with a new source but to no luck.
I have only recently started using Flash Catalyst and have no experience with Flash Builder (if it is an option)
Creating a different state for each video isn't an option either since there are 27 speakers with about 60 chapters each.
Any help/advice/link to tutorials is greatly appreciated.
Kind regards,
Darren

Hi Darren,
For what you are doing, I would really recommend using Adobe Encore CS5 instead of Catalyst.
Encore can handle up-to 99 timelines and can export a complete Flash user experience from within it's environment.
You can program timeline end actions, transitions etc.
Here is a link to a complete course on Lynda.com that shows you how to create a Flash website/DVD/CD using Encore.
http://www.lynda.com/Encore-CS4-tutorials/creating-flash-web-sites-in/53340-2.html
I hope this helps you.

  • When importing Abode premiere footage with video transitions they get wipped out :-(

Afternoon from York UK,  (USING LATEST VERSIONS OF ALL SOFTWARE)
Ok here's today's stress.... I build i video clip with Video transitions, dissolve dip to white to be specific. When i imported the project into After effects all transitions are lost :-( I'm so very confused.
To help here is a screen shot showing the transitions effects exist in the layers but on ram preview and export to mpeg no video transitions show. It is as if i added no transition effects between the clips!
    http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/cc53/zymurgy_bucket/lost-video-transitions_zps254d346c. jpg
p.s. Really wanted above link to open in separate window but Ive had enough today of battling with CMS's
    Thanks in advance,
    David

    Thanks Rick,
But I'm such a noob at Ae i've little idea on how to go about "Dynamically linked AE..." I appreciate now Ae is a technical tool which is going to take time to master which is difficult when I had yesterday to send the completed video to the client. Big problems for me are getting generated when I try to import Pr with Ae. Case in point is my Ae created animation being so much bigger than my imported video clip creating this effect: http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/cc53/zymurgy_bucket/misfit-video-clip-langleys-glitch_z pseec728d8.jpg
Spent all day trying to fix this but no joy, I have today to fix this, wish me luck ;-)

  • Understanding Video transition

I am trying to understand behaviour of video transition.
Q1. If I have a clip A (4 secs) followed by clip B (4 secs). The total length of the clips will be 8 seconds, right ?
Q2. If I have a clip A (4 secs) followed by clip B (4 secs). Then in between I add a video transition. The total length of the clip is still 8 seconds right ?
    Thanks

    Yes the 8 seconds remain.
FCE uses *Media Handles* to create transitions.
Media Handles are frames associated with the clip that are outside the in/out points for that clip.
If, for example, you have a clip that is 20 seconds long in the Viewer before it's edited to the Timeline you set in/out points for the 4 seconds required.
When you edit the clip to the Timeline only the specified 4 seconds will playback leaving 16 secs not used or Media Handles.
If the 4 secs was grabbed about the middle of the 20 second clip you will have 8 second Media Handles on both ends that can be used for Transitions.
Media Handles are basically spare bits on the start or end or both ends of a clip that FCE can call on to create a transition. That's why the edited clips in the Timeline never change length. Without Media Handles transitions cannot happen.
If you are used to the iMovie style you have to re-think the process as they work completely different.
iMovie nibbles away at the actual clips length whereas FCE doesn't.
Search the forum for Media Handles there's plenty of info.

  • I'm having a problem in FCP7 with all video transitions. Every transition has a rolling flicker throughout the effect. What is causing this?

I recently upgraded to FCP7 from FCP6. I am now having an issue in playback with all video transitions. When I add a transition to my video it does not consistently play smoothly. I now appears to have an old "film" like flicker rolling through the effect. Our video was shot on a dslr and brought into FCP with compressor as a prores 422 file. We use magic bullet for our coloring effects which are in place on this video. When I was working on the project in FCP6 I did not have this problem. When the project was complete we upgraded to FCP7. The client has now come back to us wanting additional footage. So I opened the old project up into FCP7 and checked yes to all format updates to meet with FCP7 guidelines. So far this is the only problem I've encountered. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hello!
For me it looks like conflict with field order (upper, lower - interlaced).
Please, check Your sequence settings, maybe it should be set to "field order NONE" if Your source is progressive.
    Next thing You could check:
in Your timeline with bad transitions look into "Effecs tab" - maybe FCP 7 added "shift field filter +/-1" after opening FCP 6 project.
In general - try to keep sequence settings same as source settings.

  • Sound with video transitions.

Hey, I'm using DVD Studio Pro 3 and I have a video transition for a button between a menu and a track. Now, the video I am using for the transition has sound, however there is not sound in the transition on the dvd.
Can you not have sound, or is there something I can do to fix this?
    Thanks.

    No probs.
What you need to do is make a video that looks like one menu is transitioning to the next. Let's say Menu 1 is a .psd (photoshop file) and Menu 2 is a different .psd. Take these files into FCP (or another editing program), perform your groovey transition from Menu 1 to Menu 2, lay your audio underneath it, then export as a .mov, or if you're happy using compressor export it as a .m2v and .ac3
Then bring your new video into DVDSP and place it into a new menu, lets call it Menu 1>2 (you could also place into a Track but in menus all the User Operations are already disabled).
Now, with the button that takes you from Menu 1 to Menu 2, remove the transition that you had chosen from the button inspector and simply make the target fro the button the new menu Menu 1>2, when this plays it will look just like your Menu 1 but it will play the transition you have created with the audio, then set the end jump of this menu to Menu 2. You don't put any buttons or anything into Menu 1>2, its just there as a bridge between Menu 1 and Menu 2, and there you have it.
The up side of this is that you won't get long pause that DVDSP often has when using the preset transitions. The downside is you need to create all your menu transitions this way if you're using audio which can be a lot of work if you're moving between a lot of menus and submenus.
I hope that makes sense - if not, let me know which bits are foggy.
    Cheers

  • Can't change default video transition duration in PRE7 project

I couldn't find the solution  for the following problem. In one of my Premiere Elements 7 projects, suddenly the video transition default duration changed from 30 frames to 3 frames. After inserting this 3 frames long transition, I can adjust it (expanding or shrinking) in the timeline, change the duration via the "Edit Transition" dialog box, however there is no way I can change the default duration. I can change the duration value in the Edit > Preferences > General dialog box but it has no effect on the actual duration. This is true for all transitions. On the other hand, the other projects (I checked a few), also  a new project work properly: In them, the default duration is 30 frames, and I can set it in the Properties dialog box to any other value. So, this problem appears to be project specific. I hope somebody can help me, so I do not have to redo this particular project. Thanks in advance, Laci.

Steve, This is the same camcorder I have been using the last five years. Other projects from footages taken the same time are working fine. Also, I just created a 'new' (test) project from the same clips (many clips, about 25 minutes, several bmp pictures in it) - and it also works fine! It must be some very peculiar feature of that particular project, and I do not think it is worth to spend more time with it. I just thought that it might have happened with somebody else and there is a known solution. I consider this issue closed, thanks for the help. Laci. (PS: I also have an insignificant problem: I uploaded my picture to my preferences page here a couple of months ago, set it to be displayed but it does not appear. Who could help with this? Thanks.)

  • 16:9 Video Transition

I created a 16:9 video menu, and I also created a 16:9 video transition. I can set the menu to 16:9 but I can't figure out how to set the video transition to 16:9. When I view the transition it fills the screen from left to right, but it is vertically squashed. How can I get it to fill out the screen from top to bottom?
    Thanks
    Vince

I had the setings wromg when I exported.

  • Video transitions with audio

    Hello all,
Is there any way of doing a seamless transition from a menu to track with audio as well as video.
I'm trying to create an interactive DVD for Children where you click on a rabbit, it then moves in the video transition and then becomes a track where ther is a close up of the movement.
I have audio on the close up as it is a track but it would make it much better if there was audio on the transition movie.
    thanks for any help

What sort of programmes do the high end blockbuster DVD producers use?
Some very high end expensive ones like Scenarist and others. Though between DVD SP, DVD AE and some good encoders (such as bitVice, digigami, or CC running on a MacIntel Windows set-up) you can do some real good things and accomplish many things that need to get done. The real kicker for those DVDs (IMO) is the source footage - cameras, lighting and post work. Dealing with real good source is a plus.
And of course you have very talented graphics people for the menus and so on. But once those elements are made and encoded to m2v, DVD SP for the most part, with DVD AE, can do alot of the same things. The vast majority of what is on a DVD for many DVDs really is not different. You get your cutsey things and so forth, and things that make you go "coool" especially when you author your own DVDs.
Jake, Hal and others probably can fill you in more on what they like in the other systems and what they think DVD SP may/does lack, but again DVD SP and DVD AE together is a pretty strong set up.
There is also other software out there that adds interactivity to DVDs (I think things like Who Wants to Be A Millionaire on DVD and some others may have used variations) but do not hold me to it.

  • Insert custom video "transitions" in iDVD???

    Hi,
In some commerical DVDs moving between menus or selecting the movie or extra features will show a brief movie clip or animation before the video plays.
Is there any way to do that with iDVD '09?
Just as I'm typing this I'm thinking that the "transition" added to the start of the video in iMovie, but I'd like a way to do it in iDVD just in case I want to change the transition or decide it doesn't work, rather than needing to re-export the video from iMovie for a second time.
    Any ideas?
    Cheers

    Hi there,
Some of the newer iDVD themes come with built-in transitions between menus. You can not create custom transitions in iDVD. Commercial DVDs are made with professional encoding software such as DVD Studio Pro.

  • Mac-compatible plug-in for feathered-wipe video transitions?

Does anyone know of a Mac-compatible alternative for SpiceMaster for creating feathered wipe video transitions? I've just been handed off a job (let's just say the company who started it is "no longer in the picture") and all they used feathered wipe via the SpiceMaster plug-in about 100-150 times (in a 15 minute video — sigh). Anyways, I can't change the visual direction of the project, I just have to clean up the mess. We're Mac-only and the SpiceMaster plug-in isn't available on the Mac.
While one option is to use a liner wipe Video Effect (which allows for the feather), because of the amount of transitions in this job, that's not only a major pain in the arse in itself, but having to move clips in alternating tracks and overlap the footage, etc. becomes a huge headache when they decide to change the edit (as, all of a sudden, the alternating of the clips to different tracks goes all out of wack).
Anyway, I'm hoping someone could suggest a Video Transition plug-in that would allow me to do feathered wipes. It'd mean the difference between a quick replacing of the SpiceMaster transition with whatever plug-in I could use vs. a nightmare of a project using the linear wipe Video Effect.
Any suggestions would be most appreciated!!!
    Kristin.

Thanks for the reply. I've tried using the gradient wipe, but was unsuccessful in attaining the desired effect. Here's a quick screencap to show what I'm seeing:
The problem is, this results in a very narrow wipe. I mean, it's no longer a fine line between image1 and image2, there is some feather, but I really need to feather it out. The gradient I created is the same dimensions as the sequence I'm working in, and is a gradient from 100% black on the left side to pure white on the right, with a nice gradient in between. But, when I use this, it's almost like the source gradient is squished in (on the width) resulting in a very narrow feathered wipe.
Below is an example of the rendered video as it was when using SpiceMaster to create the feathered wipe. The first image is the image directly before the wipe starts, the second image the image directly after the end of the wipe, and the third image is a capture mid-wipe. As you can see, there is a very wide feather during the transition as opposed to what is seen in the screen capture above.
Am I doing something wrong when creating my custom gradient? It seems like, since my source file is a nice, wide gradient, it should result in a wide feather, but for some reason it seems to squish down into a narrow feather?
    Any suggestions?
    Regards,
    Kristin.

  • Creating a Transition Template for FCPX

So I am familiar with FCPX and editing, however I am still working on developing my skills in animated graphics. I found a great transition I want to brand my videos with but it is saved as a After Effects Project. Upon opening it AE just has transparency behind it and no placeholder media for what would be transitioning. This would work find if I was making my project in AE, but I want to save this transition as a Transition that pops up in my FCPX Transitions Panel. I know you can create custom transitions in Motion, but I was wondering if anyone has had experience in making transitions, and if it would be possible to get an AE transition to be used as a Motion transition. Man I hope that makes sense lol.
Link to Transition I want to save as a template in FCPX: LINK

    Yeah -
Create your logo graphics in AE (you'll need to -- can't do that kind of 3D effects in Motion). Remove anything that pertains to a background and Export the project as ProRes 4444 (you'll need the transparency — everything that is background should be transparent.)
In Motion, move the playhead to the point at which you want the storyline to transition from the incoming clip to the outgoing clip. Select Transition A layer and type 0 to mark an out point. Select Transition B layer and type 'i' to mark an in point.
Save the transition. Supply a Category name (say: My Logo) and a project name (you don't need to deal with Themes and you don't need to provide a Preview).

  • PP to AE Dynamic link doesn't create video layer in AE

PP to AE Dynamic link doesn't create video layer in AE. CC2014 updated.
I'm DynLink sending a MotionJpeg clip from PP to AE. On my MacPro, Right clicking clip in PPro> replace with AE Comp. AE opens showing the comp but no video layer in the comp, (the comp is completely blank), and in PPro shows a comp in the Project Panel and a blank video chip in the timeline. This used to be a simple proceedure, is there a setting to enable in Project Settings I don't know about. New to CC, used to do this all the time in CS6.

It looks like you've got collapse transformations turned on and that the Footage layer is a composition. I'd guess that the Maria Isabel.avi in the Maria Isabel.avi composition is 2D. With Collapse transformations turned on what you are seeing is normal behavior.
What you want to do is to simply right click on the Maria avi in the Premiere timeline and select Replace with After Effects Composition. Once inside AE don't pre-compose the avi layer, just make it 3D.
The other option would be to open up the Maria Isabel.avi composition and do your 3D transformations there.
Yet another option wold be to turn off Collapse transformations.
I'm not sure why the Maria Isabel.avi footage was Pre-comped. I can't see anytning in the screenshot that gives me a reason.

  • Missing ADBE GPM Video Transitions in PE v7

I recently upgraded from PE v4 to PE v7. This was a new installation on a second PC. I then copied my PE v4 projects to the second PC that has PE v7 installed.
When I open any of my PE v4 projects with PE v7, I received an error message there are missing video transitions. The five missing video transitions are:
    (1) ADBE GPM PageCurlTran
    (2) ADBE GPM PageRollTran
    (3) ADBE GPM SphereTran
    (4) ADBE GPM CenterPeelTran
    (5) ADBE GPM SpiralFlipTrans
In PE v4, the 5 missing transitions were listed/grouped under the GPU Transitions category. However, in PE v7 I do not see the GPU Transitions category.
All five video transitions are shown in the PE v7 Plug-in Directory (plug-in\en_US), but for some reason they do not appear to be available in PE v7. The names listed in the plug-in directory are:
    (1) TransationGPUCenterPeel
    (2) TransitionGPUPageCurl
    (3) TransitionGPUPageRoll
    (4) TransitionGPUSphere
    (5) TransitionGPUSpiralFlip
I use these transitions often in my PE v4 projects. In one case Im trying to complete the project in PE v7, but there are over 40 times I used one of the five missing video transitions that I would have to replace.
I would like to use the GPM video transitions. Can you tell me why the transitions are listed in the plug-in directory but not available within the application? How can I get these five Adobe GPM video transitions to work in PE v7?

I don't know exactly what the file (plug-in) naming conventions are, but there are file name differences between the "missing" Transitions message, and the plug-in names.
I wonder if copying the old Transition files over would be of any use. In Pro, I had to work on a very old Project (P6.5 Mac) and two Transitions also did not migrate into CS2. I had a similar Transition in CS2 and made a copy of it outside of Pro. I then copied this same Transition (with the name in the error message) back to Pro and it worked fine. It had the right "stuff," just not the name that Pro was looking for, based on the Project file. The other had nothing even close, so I just replaced it with a Cross-dissolve. My guess is that it was either a 3rd party Transition, or something that had the name changed completely over the years. Might be worth a try. I'd keep a list of exactly what was copied over to PE7, so one could go in and clean out these Transitions, either when the job was done, or if they did not work.
    Good luck,
    Hunt
PS Hollywood FX Transitions will usually work in Premiere, even if they come from Pinnacle. One just has to change some file extension. Here the extensions are *probably* the same, but the names have been changed in the new version.

  • Creating video aps for Iphone downloads?

I didn't want to cross post the same post. I made the original one in the Compressor forum since my question dealt with video compression first.
    Here's the thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2582515&stqc=true
Can you create video files for Iphone Aps using programs like Final Cut or Imovie, or do you have to use separate programs like FLASH or Shockwave?

I bought Compressor, but took further advice on customising presets and codecs that I found online. The built in Apple H.264 codec doesn't produce as good a result as the freely available X.264 codec. You need the 1.2.27 version available from here:
    http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/24173/x264encoder
You place the x264Encoder.component in Macintosh HD/Library/QuickTime/. Be very careful not to put it in QuickLook folder by mistake - bad apparently.
Follow the advice in this excellent article to set up the preset for x.264
    http://www.larryjordan.biz/compressor-x264-improve-video/
Having done all this, I set up a preset in both codecs that matched as completely as possible, ran them both on the same video source and compared the results. The x.264 codec is superior. It gives much cleaner results than the Apple one at the same file size.

  • Anyway to create a transitions like this sample?

Hello ,I'm just curious about a transition I had saw in a trailor .I have searched internet but cant find a way to do something like this.I know its a professional work, but I'm just curios about is there a simple way to create a transition like that.
You can see the transition in about the 60secs of this video.(video is rolling over into other video ) Anyway thanks

You can probably do it by using separate video tracks and keyframing the rotation and opacity.
