Creating Wireless Network via existing Ethernet Network
Hello
I have a problem with setting up my network in my new place, where internet was already available via existing Ethernet network. I tired to solve the problem with the Designing Networks with Airport but I think my case is not described there. First of all let me describe how the Ethernet works. Network is setup by a Modem/router device that was supplied from the ISP, it is connected to the switch that divides the service over 4 different apartments, since it is a quite good connection there is no bandwidth problem, but the ISP device assigns only 5 IP addresses that can get internet service, everything above 5th IP is just an IP without Internet. From my basic knowledge I think that i need at least 4 IP to cover my needs. Time Capsule, Mac book, iTouch and my xbox. IF i set up my TC into a bridge mode it all works, but i am taking to much internet IP's and my neighbors are stuck with the IP's that don't allow them to connect to internet. What I need to know is a detailed instruction how to use one IP address from the 5 available, and using time capsule provide local IP to all of my devices at home so the rest of IPs generated by the ISP device will not be assigned to me.
I tired to set up the time capsule to option Share a public IP address, or static IP's option, but in both cases my devices fail to connect to internet, however they do have assigned IP's by the TC. I have a strange feeling there is a small detail I am missing that keeps me from a successful set up, but of course I might be wrong, because I am relatively new in Mac community and have only basic knowledge in network stuff.
I am sure that I was not the only one that has this problem so if there is another topic about this subject, which I have failed to find, I would appreciate a link. Thanks for help in advance, if any other info is required please don't hesitate to ask, hopefully I can solve my problem with Your help very soon.
Regards
+my Xobox fails to connect to xbox live claiming that I have NAT set as moderate (the NAT map porting is enabled) and I dont know what to do about that. I have googled a bit and there are some suggestions that my TC puts additional layer of NAT on top of my ISP modem/router and that's why it is confused.+
As William has pointed out, in your particular setup, there may be no way around the double layer of NAT. The Time Capsule must be set to "Share a single IP address" if you want to connect multiple devices.
Might be worth confirming that you really do have the additional NAT layer on your network.
Open Hard Drive > Applications > Utilities > Network Utility
Click on the Traceroute tab
Enter an address like "www.mac.com" (without the quotation marks) in the box
Click Trace
Let the trace run for a minute or two and then click Stop
Look at Line 2 only in the log.
If you see a 192.168 or 10.x.x.x address in this line, you have the additional NAT layer on your network.
If that's the case, I'm afraid that the only way to eliminate the NAT service on the Time Capsule is to place it in "bridge" mode. But, I understand that you have limited IP addresses to work with there.
Any way to have more IP addresses authorized for that location? That would appear to be the only solution if you want the Xbox to connect to Xbox live.

Hello, I'm trying to connect my new TiVo XL4 box to my home network via an ethernet cable connection to my Airport Express but the TiVo box is not seeing the network. I have a green light emanating from the Airport Express so it is connected. Please advise.
If you have not already done so, I suggest that you temporarily disconnect the Ethernet cable from the AirPort Express that goes to the Tivo box.
Instead, turn off the wireless on a laptop and connect the laptop to the Ethernet port on the Express. See if you can get an Internet connection on the laptop.
If you still cannot get an Internet connection on the laptop, try another Ethernet cable that you know is working correctly.
Post back on your results. -
Printing to the network via USB Ethernet
I have a pair of MacBook Air's that are using the USB Ethernet adapter to connect to the local ethernet (wireless is not an option, all workstations must be wired while in-house.)
The problem I run into is that both of these MBA's will loose their connectivity to the printers, or their ability to see bonjour devices at all, or Appletalk devices. In particular, I've installed a set of OkiData printers on the network which support both Bonjour & Appletalk. When I setup the printers as IP printers, they seem to work fine. However, if they, or any other printer, is connected as a Bonjour device, eventually the MBA stops recognizing/seeing/looking up Bonjour items on the network.
Any thoughts on why this is or how to correct it would be really useful, especially since some day the users might like to do some bonjour-based file sharing.
Thanks!I have a client with the exact same problem. No bonjour when attached via USB ethernet (Apple's own) SOMETIMES. However, I've noticed that if she unplugs and tries the other usb slot, it seems to work (immediately, no reboot). I've actually only told her to do this over the phone, but it has worked at least twice.
One problem here is that the printers are NOT accessible via bonjour over WLAN, since the WLAN is at least 2 different C class networks.
The other is that due to the setup of the printers and crap drivers from Ricoh, using personalized printer queues only works over Bonjour and not TCP. Thus, only USB ethernet can be used for printing. It would be very interesting to hear if changing usb ports might help in your case as well. This particular client has a late 2010 MBA 4G/128G, but at the same department there are at least 7 MBAs where no-one has had the same problem. Either that, or they had it but never told me. -
Imac printing wirelessly from an existing pc network
I have a wireless network already set up in my home, my main pc is a win xp pro xomputerhave a laptop that already prints wirelessly thru it... thinking about adding an imac .. will that be able to print wirelessly too, my printers are both HP's and have mac drivers that are available.
Yes, usually with very few problems. Just get the Mac onto the wireless network and run the printer setup utility on the Mac, and that should be it.

Adding jumbo frame support into an existing Ethernet network
I have a remote site with 40 users that connect back to our main site via two point to point T-1s. These users connect to an Exchange server (DMZ), Sybase databases on Sun servers (Internal network), and access the Internet via the main site.
I have installed a new WS-2970G-24TS-E switch into the network at this remote site. I have connected all of the designers (total of 10) Apple G5 workstations and two Apple Xserves to this switch. I have also configured the system jumbo MTU to 9000 bytes on the 2970. I have not yet enabled jumbo frames on the Xserves or the G5s since I am unsure of what the effect on the network might be. I imagine it could range from dropped packets to crashing the router.
I would like to enable jumbo frame support on these devices since they transfer hundreds of gigabytes of data on their local network. But if I do this, what will be the affect when they attempt to visit web sites or connect to the Exchange server?
How have you guys worked with this type of scenario?
The address space for this site is a /25 of one of our class Cs.
Please see the attached Visio diagram that outlines the connection points throughout the network.
Thank youBest practice here is to segment your Jumbo Frame servers on their own VLANs for Jumbo supported systems only.
As a post here has already mentioned, Path MTU discovery will tell the systems on the Jumbo VLANs to keep the frames under 1500 when talking to a non-Jumbo VLAN.

Lately my time machine backups have been failing because "...the sparsebundle is already in use." What does this mean, and how can I fix it?
What does this mean
It means that there are bugs in the Time Machine software
how can I fix it?
A rather complex procedure....
Pull the power cord from the back of the Time Capsule
Count to ten
Plug the power cord back into the the back of the Time Capsule -
Merge Time Capsule network with existing WiFi network.
Hi everyone. I was wondering if there was a way to merge the network on from my router with the network made by my Time Capsule. Currently, I have two different networks in my house, which can be annoying to have to choose between them. I have the 2013 2TB Time Capsule and it is connected to my Verizon Fios router through an etherney port. Please let me know if there is a way to do this. Thanks so much.
I am not recommending them, but some users have had success using Ethernet powerline adapters to send the Ethernet signal over the existing AC powerlines in the home.
The theory here is that you already have the wiring in place....you just need the adapters. In practice, things do not always work as well as the theory might suggest, so if you want to give them a try, it would be a good idea to understand the store's return policy before you buy.
Your local computer / electronics superstore will have a selection of Ethernet powerline devices. -
Connect MacBook to wifi network via Ethernet
I am looking for a way to connect my MacBook to my wifi network via my Ethernet port. I'm not having any trouble with the wifi but am looking at getting an apple tv and wish to be able to use wolan. As far as I know, wowlan is only available using the apple airport routers. Is there something I can get that plugs into my Ethernet port on my MacBook, connects to the wifi network and lets my MacBook treat it as a wired connection so I can use wolan? I assume something like this would. E cheaper than buying an apple router that supports wowlan...?
Also, how do I make sure that my current router actually supports wolan?
Thanks. We assume that you are trying to configure the AirPort Express to "join" your wireless network. In order to do so, you must enter in the wireless network name, exact type of security and password that your network is using.
Mistakes are often made with the security settings because different manufacturers use different nomenclature to mean the same thing. For example
WPA2 Personal on Apple = WPA2-PSK-AES on other wireless routers
or
WPA/WPA2 Personal on Apple = WPA-PSK-TKIP on other wireless routers
Can you dig a bit deeper into your settings on your router to find out whether you are using AES or TKIP? Once you find that info, you should be able to match up the correct setting on the AirPort Express during the configuration.
Don't be fooled by the the message that you see when you click Update during the configuration process. The message states something to the effect that the settings have been stored successfully on the AirPort Express. What it doe not tell you is whether the settings that were stored are the correct settings.
You will know that you have the correct settings when you see a green light on the AirPort Express 40-45 seconds after you click the Update button. -
Dear all,
laptop:: Lenovo X61s 3G L7700
OS version: windows Vista business Sp1
tcpip.sys version: 6.0.6001.22167
wifi: Intel 4965AGN. Standard Gigabyte intel ethernet 82566MM
system drivers and BIOS are the most updated driver.
At my 2 homes using ADSL routers, there are absolutely no problems with network connection by wifi or ethernet. However, blue screen occurs when I bring this laptop to university and connect to the network via either ethernet or wifi. This happened to me a few months back. It crashed EVERY TIME when a network connection was attempted. It did not matter whether I updated my drivers on both wifi or ethernet cards. Whenever I bring it to either of my2 homes, no blue screen ever occurs.
It also happens when I attempt to connect to free wifi network in the airport. It crashes again with EXACTLY the same problem. I have to admit that I do not even where to start looking for the problems. System restore did not solve this either. I ran the WinBug analysis. It pointed towards tcpip.sys. My sys ver is at the top of this message.
Would appreciate if someone can point this to the right direction. I am seriously thinking of downgrading this to XP, since it had NEVER happened to XP.
thanks,
VIncent

UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP_M (1000007f)
This means a trap occurred in kernel mode, and it's a trap of a kind
that the kernel isn't allowed to have/catch (bound trap) or that
is always instant death (double fault). The first number in the
bugcheck params is the number of the trap (8 = double fault, etc)
Consult an Intel x86 family manual to learn more about what these
traps are. Here is a *portion* of those codes:
If kv shows a taskGate
use .tss on the part before the colon, then kv.
Else if kv shows a trapframe
use .trap on that value
Else
.trap on the appropriate frame will show where the trap was taken
(on x86, this will be the ebp that goes with the procedure KiTrap)
Endif
kb will then show the corrected stack.

"When my ATV is connected via ethernet, and I attempt to play some internet radio stations, some will work just fine while others won't. For example, when connected to my home network via ethernet, some internet radio channels (I can't give a percentage because I haven't tested all of them) will play just fine, however, others won't. The ATV will attempt to connect, but the spinning progress bar just goes and goes and goes until it eventually errors out (no error number is provided, it just says that there was trouble loading the content). The funny thing (or not so funny thing actually) is that if I unplug the ethernet cable, and connect my ATV to the network via wifi, those same stations that didn't play when ATV was connected via ethernet, WILL play when ATV is connected via wifi. So, in short, some stations play just fine when ATV is connected to home network, through wireless router, via either wifi OR ethernet, yet some will only play when ATV is connected to home network via wifi. I have found this to be the same when it comes to downloading or refreshing the photos in my photo stream. If I throw new photos in my photo stream on iCloud, and the ATV is connected via ethernet, they won't refresh to the ATV, however, if I unplug the ATV and connect via wifi they begin to refresh."
There are dozens of original threads out there that report of similar - if not exact, issues. I have contacted "Roy" per his request and not heard back from him (if such a person exists). I have "restored" my ATV and rebooted all equipment to no avail. Until Apple gets with it, acknowledges their problem, and fixes it, I am resigned to just having to deal with switching back and forth from wifi to ethernet, and so on. -
Time Capsule on an Ethernet network
Are there issues with Ethernet networked hard drives and Macs with Time Machine. Is it with the devices or with the actual software? If its the hardware are there types of drives that work best?
I am trying to figure out how to set up my backup and storage situation on my network. I have a wireless MacBook Pro and a G4 and another G3 connected to my Verizon router via Ethernet. Using a Firewire drive cabled to my main Power G5 workstation and using file sharing for the other Macs. , I should be able to have all computers access the LaCie drive connected to the G5. But I would like to use Time Machine for the laptop and the G5 since this is where most of my work is done.
What I would like to end up with is one fast as possible drive for my music, video and pics that I can play and work off of. But I was also looking for some way to have some duplication and automation using TM that could also backup the ongoing graphic work in the office. I was thinking of connecting a Time Capsule to my network via a Ethernet switch I use for 2 network printers. I could keep the Firewire drive on my G5 or maybe connected it to the TC and have TM backup everything. Am I overcomplicating this? Will this work?
Message was edited by: MKaydenPresently without Time Capsule, it is not possible to backup to Networked drives with Time Machine. Time Capsule should at least change that possibility for the Time Capsule device itself. Whether the software that allows that changes for other networked devices remains to be seen. Since Time Capsule is still in pre-release status, we'll have to wait and see.

Network mode: Create a wireless network vs. Extend wireless network via ethernet
Can some one tell me the difference between configuring AirPort Utility : Network mode: Create a wireless network vs. Extend wireless network via ethernet? I connect my cable modem to my Airport Time Capsule to a network switch via ethernet. The switch contacts to three Airport Express (AE connects to two Apple TVs via Ethernet) and another TC. Which is the best mode to configure my network?
ThanksCreate a wireless network is used only when the Airports have an Ethernet connection. If you are using the setup wizard.....the setting will read Extend using Ethernet during the setup. If you go back in using AirPort Utility to check the Network Mode setting.....you will see that it is really Create a wireless network.
Extend a wireless network is used only if an AirPort is connecting to another AirPort using wireless.......not Ethernet.
Every one of the Airports on your network must be configured to Create a wireless network.
If you do connect an Ethernet cable to an AirPort that is already set up to Extend a wireless network......that will create a massive feedback loop that will crash the network until you remove the Ethernet connection to the device.
The bottom line here might be if you are using the setup wizard, it will make the correct choice for you. -
Extending wireless network via ethernet
Hi all: I have a first gen Airport Extreme and an Airport Express. I am having a hard time getting my wifi network extended via the Airport Express. My goal to to have an extended wifi network with the source data delievered to the Airport Express via ethernet and then broadcasted, not repeating teh wifi signal from the Airport Extreme. The two devises are seperated by several walls which does not allow the wifi signal to propogate between them.
I can see both devices via our ethernet wiring (I turn off wifi on my laptop and plug into the network). The Airport Express is connected to directly to one of the Airport Extreme ethernet ports (and not the WAN port). I then setup the Airport Extreme first and test it - that works fine. Then I move over to the Airport Express and set it up to extend the wireless network. This seems to work fine too. But when I move the Express to its final location and hook it up to our wired network, it fails to broadcast.
I hope my description makes sense. Is my goal possible? Thanks, Chris. Then I move over to the Airport Express and set it up to extend the wireless network. This seems to work fine too. But when I move the Express to its final location and hook it up to our wired network, it fails to broadcast.
You have the basis for a "roaming" type network. In this case the AirPort Express needs to be configured both as a bridge and to "create a wireless network," not to extend it. The "extend" feature was designed only for when you want the connection between base stations to be wireless. A bit confusing as a roaming network does indeed "extend" the wireless network and uses the same Network Name. -
I am trying to connect a Windows 7 / 64 bit to an Epson printer on my Mac. The printer is hooked into the Mac via USB; the Mac is networked to a Linksys wireless router with an ethernet cable, as is the Windows box. I installed the current Bonjour printer services software on the Windows machine, and separately installed the driver software for the Epson printer on the WIndows machine. Running the bonjour wizard, I get an alert saying 'I don't have sufficient access to my computer to connect to the selected printer'.
The printer has 'sharing' turned on from the Mac end; this works with a Powerbook via the wireless connection. Sharing is also turned on in the Windows printer control panel for this printer (under properties). The Mac is a G5 running 10.5.8. When I try to print a page from the Windows machine it gets hung in the print queue.
Any advice how to proceed would be appreciated!

I have a power mac g5 that does not have a wireless card, and connects to the internet via ethernet cable.
I want to know how to set up an airport express so that it joins my wireless home network and provides the G5 with an internet signal.
This via an ethernet cable that is plugged into the airport express and then into the ethernet port on the g5.
Please advise as I have configured the airport express in every way possible, the green light is on and when I plug the ethernet cable into the G5 my network cofigurations shows nothing and says that the ethernet cable is not plugged in (It is).
I get an internet signal if the ethernet cable is plugged directly into my wireless router, so the ethernet port works.
Please assist. Thanks. Two requirements that must be met to do what you want.......
1) An AirPort Express 802.11n must be used. Check the Model No on the label on the side of the Express. It needs to be A1264. Any other model number will not do what you want.
2) The Express must be configured to "Join a wireless network" and the option to enable Ethernet Clients must be checked.
Open AirPort Utility and click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab below the row of icons
The box to "Allow Ethernet Clients" must be checked
Please check to verify that your AirPort Express meets both requirements -
Cannot connect to Internet via newly created wireless network
Just purchased an Aiport Express router this week. Connected it to an RCA DCM425 Time Warner Cable modem and it worked fine out of the box. Now, after running the Airport Utility to create a new password-protected network, I cannot connect to the Internet. Both my PowerBook G4 (running Mac OS X 10.4.10) and Windows PC (XP SP2) can connect to the new network but then cannot access the Internet. After being frustrated for a few hours with this I performed a hard reset and then could connect to the default apple network the AX was transmitting. But now I tried creating a new network again and again the same problem. No internet access despite Network Status indicating otherwise. Please help! I purchased this product b/c I thought it was supposed to be an easier setup.
Welcome to Apple Discussions
Sorry, but the 169.x.x.x IP address is internally generated by the iPod (and iPhone) and indicates that a network has been detected but no IP address has been issued. Your friends iPhone was not connected to your ad hoc network either - it connected to the internet through the 3G network.
You should read through the Vista help screens on ad hoc networking for some insight how this works. You should be able to get some ideas there.
In the mean time, $40 or less will buy you a very capable wireless router with four Ethernet ports and will simplify your network tremendously. Having used Windows ICS for a long time, the addition of a router and a real network simplified things so much.

Issue Burning CDs in AA3.0
Hi, I have a user who when attempting to burn a CD audition stops at 99% of the process than freezes and the CD never burns. This happens with multiple CDs and files. Any ideas what could be causing this? AA works fine other than this one issue.
