Creating XSAN using Thunderbolt RAID?

Can XSAN under Lion Server (w/Lion clients) be set up purely using a Thunderbolt RAID and Thunderbolt client connections (i.e. no Fiber Channel)? I'm using a Promise 12TB Raid as the repository for my image library and would dearly like to have a two-seat SAN to access from two machines, using a Thunderbolt Mac Mini as the MDC. Has anyone successfully set up such an arrangement yet?

I am still skeptical for a few reasons though. One, I only see references in apple's documentation to being able to plug in an apple computer on one end.
I understand that Apple do not say that the Promise 12TB Raid device will work with 2 Apple Desktop machines connected but there are a few people on the Internet with videos, blogs and tutorials on how to do it.
If you have OS X Lion on both machines, connected to the same network - for some reason, will automatically find the other machine through the Promise 12TB Raid device and both will connect.

Two, there is no switching protocol built into Thunderbolt and if you plugged in two computers into the same direct attached RAID, if it was formated HFS, the two computers wouldn't know what the other was doing and corrupt the data after a minute or so.
There is no switching protocol built into Thunderbolt, but there is a switching protocol in the embedded Raid system. With the HFS format, the two computers will only be able to work on different documents, you might be able to view what is happening to the document on another Mac but you will not be able to simultaneously edit the same document unless you bank up on four HDDs using Raid 5 where OS X Lion would use localised versions on the Promise 12TB Raid device. This is very simple to do but would need a localising protocol programme.

  • A question about Thunderbolt Raid 0's as drives for Premiere

    Hi all,
    I've had a browse through the forum, and found some material relating to this topic, but I'm looking for a definitive as possible answer to this.
    I've just left the company I used to work for, and I've begun to set up a small editing suite at home for freelance work. I've always had engineers build me workstations in the past, so I'm a little lost. I, so far, have the follwing hardware:
    iMac 27" (late 2012)
    32gb RAM
    i7 3.4ghz
    1 x 1tb internal 7200rpm drive
    1 x 4tb Lacie Raid 0 Thunderbolt drive
    I'm thinking about going for the classic 3 drive structure: 1.) Internal drive for apps, 2.) 1 x drive for media, and 3.) 1 x drive for previews, cache et al.
    My question then, finally, is can I use these Thunderbolt Raid 0 drives as my drives 2.) and 3.)? I ran a speedtest on my current Lacie, and it was pretty impressive. I just don't want to go out and get another one to find that it's not up to the tasks I need it for above.
    Thanks in advance for any of your help.
    Ken

    Yes use Lacie R0 as the media and cache and I suggest you do. Adding TB devices chained will raise the latency. That 1 Raid 0 will be more than fast enough for both.

  • Has anyone used Thunderbolt or USB 3.0?

    In the not too distant future I am intending to upgrade from my 2008 24"  2.8GHz iMac.
    The new models appear to have gone down the Thunderbolt route which appears to be not very popular with HDs being few and far between and very expensive.
    USB 3.0 whilst theoretically only half the speed seems to be taking off and reasonably cheap, and appears to be more universally adopted.
    Could Apple have backed the wrong horse on this occasion?
    Sorry, I was just thinking aloud, definitely not speculating.
    So has anyone used Thunderbolt and got anything good or bad to say about it?

    Not personally:
    The german computer-magazine c't tested the Promise Pegasus R6 Thunderbolt and found it speedwise way ahead of USB 3.0 and eSATA.
    As a RAID-Level 0 with 6 x Hitachi HDS721010CLA332 (7.200 U/min, 1TB each) and MBP 13" 2011 OSX 10.6.8:
    Write - 693 MByte/s
    Read - 721 MByte/s
    Read AND Write - 323 MByte/s
    Time Machine -capable and OS X Bootable.
    0.8 Sone when active
    61.6 W active - 48 W when not used.
    Sadly the article is not avaibale other than Printed.

  • Thunderbolt RAID vs USB 3.0 RAID

    With a 5 sata drive 10TB RAID, is Thunderbolt RAID much faster than USB 3.0?  With the drives being sata anyway?  can they take advantage of the speed difference between USB3.0 and Thundebolt?

    Barefeats answered some of that. So too did t he large Anandatech review.
    USB3 is crippled by all the USB3 ports sharing a single bus controller it seems and is worse in performance than on say a 2013 MacBook Pro.
    You need to go Thunderbolt/Thunderbolt2 if you want something more than just a consumer level storage, maybe okay if there is only one USB3 storage device used at any given time, might work for JBOD.
    You could also look into ethernet and NAS interface. Someone wanted to use an array with an old and new Mac Pro where NAS would probably work best even perfect solution.

  • G Tech thunderbolt raid not being seen?

    So I've attempted to hook up a g tech raid to my mac pro using thunderbolt connection and its not showing up. hooked it up to my mac book pro and its fine. Along with the specs shown in the photo I also have a black magic card in a express slot. I've read that this is the problem that howed up for others when they switched to mavericks. Any other ideas about a work around and is apple going to fix this?
    <Image Edited by Host to Remove Serial Number>

    In order to use any ThunderBolt devices successfully, they must be attached to a ThunderBolt port that was there when your Mac was manufactured.
    The "plug-compatible" Mini Displayports on your Mac Pro (tower) 2012 model graphics card do not support ThunderBolt -- they provide only the Graphics subset, and cannot work with any other devices.
    Your Mac does not have ThunderBolt -- and never will.

  • Using thunderbolt on old macs

    I need to upgrade my storage to 10TB+.  My dilemma is that I have a 2010 Mac Pro for now, but plan to buy the new type of thunderbolt Mac Pro whenever the next generation comes out.     If I get a 10tb thunderbolt RAID, how do I use this with my current mac?  Is the only option an expensive thunderbolt card?  I can't find any thunderbolt RAIDs that also have esata connection to plug into my esata card.

    Is the raid box you have Sata 2 or Sata 3?
    Lots of older raid boxes were only sata 2 (3Gb), which may be the reason for whoever you spoke to told you the current box would be 'slow' (comparative to what is available). Also a lot of esata cards were only 3Gb. The best way to find out what you have is to look at the negotiated link speed for the setup you have for the Pcie specs under sata info in the System Hardware pane. See if the AHCI controller is 6Gb rated, then see in the negotiated device speed is 6Gb, 3Gb or 1.5GB. If you have 6Gb for both you cannot improve the hardware.
    The hard cold reality is the choice is either stick with your current box and buy the esata to TB adapter or update to a sata 3 (if applicable). As an example, I have the setup I mentioned above with 2 3TB WD Green discs that are less than ideal in performance running to a Mac Mini with a San Disc SSD and it runs in real world use (not some dream world software test) at 335MB/s Write speed. I plan to use a pair of Samsung Evo 1TB in the same RAID box soon, which should slightly improve that figure. Yes, I know that a TB RAID will eat that speed, but simple fact is a TB RAID cannot be adapted to be used on early Mac Pros, so if want dual functionality that is where the line stops.

  • Can I and should I move my home directory to my new Thunderbolt RAID drive?

    I have just purchased a Thunderbolt Promoise Pegasus Raid set to Raid5.  I have never owned a RAID device before so i apologise if these questions seem strange or rudimentary.
    I am running an internal 7200 RPM 1TB disc but I have heard that the Thunderbolt throughput is faster than even my internal drive.  Is that the case?
    If so...
    Would it be possible/wise for me to move my home directory to the RAID?
    Would it be possible/wise for me run the entire system from the RAID?
    Finally, if I keep the system/home directory on the RAID, can I/shoud I  use the RAID for Time Machine Backups?
    Thanks in advance for any thoughts

    Here's what I did:
    Copied my home directory to the RAID (not NAS incidentally, but RAID via thunderbolt)
    System Prefernces -> accounts
    Unlock to make changes and control-click on the account you want to move.
    In there you will see a home directory location.  Change it to where your new home directory location is.
    Restart.
    You know it has worked if the new location icon is the familiar picture of a house.
    Probably a good idea to have a fallback account you can log into in case something happens.
    No issues with any software, plenty of room now on the internal drive ad everything works nice and snappy

  • Install on a Thunderbolt RAID volume

    Are there any pitfall when using a Thunderbolt RAID volume as startup disk?
    The setup would be a Mac mini connected to an ARC-8050 Thunderbolt RAID with RAID6 level.
    I want a setup with low Recovery Time if the Mac mini has a hardware failure.
    So the plan is that if the Mac mini has a failure i just replace it with the second Mac mini and boot from the RAID volume.
    Is this a good idea?

    Loosec;
    I see that you have a handle on the dmraid package, recently upgraded I see.
    I have an application for raid that does not involve booting with raid, data system only.
    I desire to generate an archive for pacman using a raid array for purposes of install speed.
    My first attempts used mdadm techniques and provided a software raid of hde and hdg drives which did not produce  an improved hdparm read speed.
    What changes to dmraid procedures will provide a non-bootable raid0 system which will archive pacman packages and provide combined raid read speed at least 50% greater than the normal 40MB/sec.?
    Performance figures for raid0 with dmraid haven't been available in the forums.  Perhaps these are disappointing?
    Basically, how to make a raid0 system  with dmraid but not make it bootable?
    EDIT:  Solved my problem with mdadm and mke2fs, fstab entry and /mnt/md entry.

  • What is 'Error 36' when using Thunderbolt

    I'm trying to do large file transfers from one disk device to a Promise Tech 'Pegasus' RAID using Thunderbolt as the interface.
    I have 60 thousand files amounting to 507GB to transfer.
    The system takes 3 minutes to recognize all the files, and then appears to begin transfers.  Lights blink on the target Pegasus RAID.
    The copy dialog box says it will take about an hour.  That's expected.
    Then 6-8 minutes into the process, it quits.
    Error code 36
    My research shows this to be related to CD and DVD burning.  Not doing that!

    These errors typically occur when security software interferes with the restore and update process. Follow Troubleshooting security software issues to resolve this issue. In rare cases, these errors may be a hardware issue. If the errors persist on another computer, the device may need service.
    Also, check your hosts file to verify that it's not blocking iTunes from communicating with the update server. See iTunes: Advanced iTunes Store troubleshooting—follow steps under the heading Blocked by configuration (Mac OS X / Windows) > Rebuild network information > Mac OS X > The hosts file may also be blocking the iTunes Store. If you have software used to perform unauthorized modifications to the iOS device, uninstall this software prior to editing the hosts file to prevent that software from automatically modifying the hosts file again on restart.

  • Logical error in creating tables using db link in solaris

    Hi,
    While creating table using the syntax create table newtab...as select * from tab@dblink .. I am facing a problem. The newtab table created is having a structure different (from datalength point of view of varchar2 and char datatypes) from the source. The data length is getting tripled i.e. if a column a is varchar2(20) in tab then it is becoming --- a varchar2(60) in newtab. This is happening in solaris environment when the two databases are in 2 different servers. Please let me know if there are any patches to resolve the problem.
    Thanks

  • How to save report in PersonalCategory  after creating it using java panel?

    Hi,
    Anybody knows How to save report in PersonalCategory  after creating it using java panel?
    I dont want to save it in public folder. I want to save report (webi) in user's personal category.
    can anybody send me source code?
    It will help me a lot.
    Thanks in advance

    Hi teda,
    i'm assuming that you have seen my post that i did successfuly save report in user's personal category.
    Actually the report is created in webi java panel using RE SDK and  is saved in Report Sample Folder then i'm saving it in user's personal category by following code
    string query = "Select SI_PERSONAL_CATEGORIES From CI_INFOOBJECTS Where "
                         + "SI_INSTANCE=0 And SI_ID=" + reportID;
                    InfoObjects infoObjects = infoStore.Query(query);
                    InfoObject infoObject = infoObjects[1];
                    Webi wreport = (Webi)infoObject;
                    ObjectRelativeIDs personalIDs = wreport.PersonalCategories;
                /personalIDs.Add(Convert.ToInt32(categoryID));
                   infoStore.Commit(infoObjects);
    But the report is presents in the Folder also and in user's personal category also.
    I dont want the report to be in the folder (Report Sample) if i saved it in user's personal category.
    How can i do that?
    any idea.
    Please help me.

    Hi all
    Why Dynamic Parameter is not working, when i create report XI using stored procedure ?
    Only i shaw those parameters which i used in my stored procedure, the parameter which i create dynamic using stored procedure
    is not shown to me when i referesh the report for viewing the results.
    I have used the same procedure which i mention below but can not seen the last screen which is shown in this .
    ============================================================================================
    1. Select View > Field Explorer2. Right-click on Parameter Fields and select New from the right-click menu.3. Enter u201CCustomer Nameu201D as the name for your parameter4. Under u201CList of Valuesu201D select u201CDynamicu201D5. Under the Value column, click where is says u201Cclick here to add itemu201D and select Customer Name from the drop-down list. The dialog shown now look like the one shown below in Figure 1. Click OK to return to your report design.
    Dynamic Parameter Setup6. Next, select Report > Select Expert, select the Customer Name field and click OK.7. Using the drop-down list beside select u201CIs Equal Tou201D and using the drop-down list, select your parameter field (it should be the first field). 8. Click OK to return to your report design and see the parameter dialog.The parameter dialog will appear and show you a dynamic list of values that is updated each time your run your report. It couldnu2019t be easier! In our next tutorial, we will be looking at how to use this feature to create cascading parameter fields, where the values are filtered by the preceding selection.
    Dynamic Parameters in Action
    My question is that whether dynamic parameter is working with storedprocedure or not.
    When i added one table and try to fetch records using dyanmic prameters. after that i am not be able to find the dynamic parameter option when i referesh my report.
    One more thing when i try the static parameter for my report, the option i see when i referesh the screen.
    Please reply soon , it's urgent

    Hi Kishore,
    I have tested the issue step by step by following you description, while the first issue works well in my local environment. Based on my research, this can be caused by the lookup expression or it indeed return Male value based on the logic. If you use the
    expression below, it will indeed only return the Male record. So please try to double-check the record in the two datasets and the expression in your environment:
    =lookup(first(Fields!ProgramID.Value,"DataSet1"),Fields!ProgramID.Value,Fields!Gender.Value,"DataSet2")
    As to the second issue, please try to use the following expression:
    =Count(Lookup(fields!ProgramID.value,fields!ProgramID.value,fields!Gender.value,"DataSet2"))
    Besides, if this issue still exist, in order to trouble shoot this issue more efficiently, could you please post both the .rdl  file with all the size properties to us by the following E-mail address?  It is benefit for us to do further analysis.

  • Creating Report using EPM Functions with Dynamic Filters

    Hi All,
    I am new to BPC, In BPC 7.5 i seen like we can generate EPM report using EVDRE function very quickly and easy too. Is the same feature is existing in BPC 10.0 ? if no how can we create EPM reports using EPM Functions with Dynamic Filters on the Members of the dimension like in BPC 7.5.
    And i searched in SDN, there is no suitable blogs or documents which are related to generation of Reports using EPM Functions. All are described just in simple syntax way. It is not going to be understand for the beginners.
    Would you please specify in detail step by step.
    Thanks in Advance.
    Siva Nagaraju

    Siva,
    These functions are not used to create reports per se but rather assist in building reports. For ex, you want to make use of certain property to derive any of the dimension members in one of your axes, you will use EPMMemberProperty. Similary, if you want to override members in any axis, you will make use of EPMDimensionOverride.
    Also, EvDRE is not replacement of EPM functions. Rather, you simply create reports using report editor (drag and drop) and then make use of EPM functions to build your report. Forget EvDRE for now.
    You can protect your report to not allow users to have that Edit Report enabled for them.
    As Vadim rightly pointed out, start building some reports and then ask specific questions.
    Hope it clears your doubts.
