Creation of server pool in dhcp environment fails

Hi,
I am new to Oracle VM, please help me with my aim of setting up an "as simple to configure as possible" virtual machine. I chose the "all-in-one" approach, mentioned in the documentation, where server-pool-master, utility-server, vm-server are all on the same machine.
Now, I have a problem, which consists in the dhcp based network environment in my workgroup. How can work with fixed IP's in order to configure my server pool?
Can the server pool virtual IP be the same, as the IP of
Server Pool Master
Utility Server
Virtual Machine Server
Many thanks in advance

Do i understand you correctly, that it is possible to configure the Oracle VM server and the pool and the utility server and the vm guests on one machine?Yes.
Do i understand you correctly, that i should assign the pool the very same physical IP of the Oracle VM server host?In the case of a single server, the pool doesn't need an IP address.

You do not need to setup or configure a DNS server in a private LAN, unless you want to be reachable beyond your local home network. The local hosts file provides the same functions in terms of mapping a TCP/IP number to a name and vice versa like a DNS server. It is not designed to maintain large corporate networks with dynamic IP addresses, but easy to maintain in your small home network. Your DSL modem is most likely the a gateway for all internet traffic outside your private LAN and also re-routing DNS requests for public host resolving. Unless you explicitly configured an authoritative internet domain name for your home LAN on your DSL modem your computers may not have been assigned internet host and domainname via DHCP.
To analyze your current situation you can use the following commands:
# hostname
If this shows something like "localhost.local" this means you do not have given your computer a hostname and domainname and it is using defaults.
# domainname
It will be "blank" if not configured.
# ping localhost.local
This should show resolve in your real IP address like 192.168.2.1, but will show nothing if DNS or /etc/hosts is not configured properly.
# ping localhost
This should result in 127.0.0.1, which is a looback interface of the TCP/IP stack.
You need to make appropriate entries in your /etc/hosts file if you cannot use a DNS server.
192.168.2.1 localhost.local ovmserver
127.0.0.1 localhost
If this does not resolve the issue you can try the below. This is not a very clean configuration, but could work.
192.168.2.1 localhost.local ovmserver localhost
127.0.0.1 localhost
If you have any entry like:
127.0.0.1 ovmserver - this is wrong and needs to be removed.
Be aware of possible network address translation if you use VMware, in which case you need to configure your VMware network interface accordingly.

• Server Pool WITHOUT shared storage

The documentation defines Server Pool as:
+Logically an autonomous region that contains one or more physical Oracle VM Servers.+
Therefore, should it possible to add multiple servers (physically separate VM servers) to the same Server Pool even though they are NOT using shared storage? When I tried to add the second VM Server to the Server Pool I received the following error:
During adding servers ([vmoracle2]) to server pool (VM_Server_Pool), Cluster setup failed:

Nothing is as easy as it seems when it comes to Oracle VM.
When trying to create a new Server Pool to accommodate my second VM Server, I received the following error:

• Server Pool Master fails and cannot fail over to another VM Server

Dear All,
Oracle VM 2.2.2
I have 2 VM Servers connect to Storage 6140 Array and on VM Manager I enable HA on the server pool, then on all virtual machines.
- VM Server 1 has role as Server Pool Master, Utility Server, Virtual Machine Server and has virtual machines running
- VM Server 2 has role as Utility Server, Virtual Machine Server and has virtual machines running.
I try to shutdown the VM Server 1 act as Server Pool Master but I don't see Server Pool Master fail over to another VM Server 2 and also status become to Unreachable both of 2 Servers.
Especially, All virtual machines cannot be accessible.
Please kindly give advice for this.
Thanks and regards,
Heng

Thanks Avi, I'll find and read that document. And thanks also for elaborating about the Utility Server.
After reading the followups to my original question, I tried to think of possible server "layouts" in a HA environment.
1) "N" servers in the pool, one of them is Pool Master, Utility Server AND VM Guests Server at the same time. Maybe this will be the preferred server for smaller, quicker VMs.
2) "N" servers in the pool, one is Pool Master AND Utility Server, but has no VM guests running on it
3) "N" servers in the pool, one is the Pool Master, another one is the Utility Server (none of them has VMs running on them), and finally a number of VM Guest servers
Let's take case 1. If the Pool Master & Utility server fails, given that it has VM guests running on it as well, I understand from your explanation that I'll be ANYWAY able to manually "live migrate" the guests somewhere else, using VM Manager. Is this correct?
If it's correct, then it's just a question of how much money I want to spend to have dedicated servers for different tasks, JUST FOR BETTER PERFORMANCES REASONS. Do you agree? And especially: do YOU have dedicated Pool Masters (just to figure out your "real" approach to the problem :-) )
I feel that I still miss something, the picture is not completely clear to me. The fact is, that I'm now testing on my new bladesystem, but for now I put up one single blade. Testing HA will be the next step. I was just trying to get a few things sorted out in advance, but there is still something that I'm missing, as I was saying...
Looking forward to your next reply, thanx again
Rob

Due to the fact that Oracle VM Release 3.1.1 does support shared SAS storage (SAS SAN)
I created a partition, share it by NSF and placed there ovspoolfs.img ... access to this partition is at all servers ...
You can mount it manually, but when you try to enter a server in the cluster, OVMM write that the partition is mounted on a different path

• Can't start messaging server - get "Load Environment Failed" in the administration server

The messaging server can't restart, and when I use the
admininstration server to verify setting I get the following message:

load environment failed

The file /etc/netscape.mail.conf is probably corrupted or missing.
Try to regenerate it out of a backup.

We also use a boot.properties in ${domain.home}, which may only be for Admin server, but worth checking anyway. Also, I often receive the boot.properties message you're seeing when there's other problems upstream, and I've found the message to be quite misleading at times. For example, if I have a problem with an LDAPAuthenticator or any other security mechanism I'll often see the boot.properties message eventhough the problem has nothing to do with that file.

• The DHCP service failed to see a directory server for authorization.

We have two DHCP servers hosted on Hyper-V.
But after shutdown activity at our DC, the servers gave an usual issue.
"The DHCP service failed to see a directory server for authorization."
We have rebooted number of time before getting this server into production but it never gave such kind of error.
Also this time the local DC was shutdown.
Please suggest the necessary steps to be taken.

Hi,
The authorized DHCP server contacts a domain controller every 60 min to detect/redetect his status. Maybe your DHCP has tried to reach the DC which was offline thus throwing that error. Are you still having issues with DHCP server servicing clients?
Once the server talks to a DC and checks that his authorized the service will start leasing IPs to clients.

• The DHCP Service failed to see a directory server for authorization error

Hi Experts,
"The DHCP Service failed to see a directory server for authorization error"
I have DHCP Server installed on the same server where Active directory is installed its a domain controller, when I see the event logs I saw the above error.
This alert comes a number of times, just after the error
"The DHCP/BINL service on the local machine, belonging to the Windows Administrative domain eg.com.pk, has determined that it is authorized to start. It is servicing clients now."
Please somebody suggest some solution for this.
TechSpec90

Two questios:
Is the server a domain controller?
And, according to this, "The DHCP/BINL service on the local machine, belonging to the Windows Administrative domain eg.com.pk, has determined that it is authorized to start. It is servicing clients now", the service eventually do start, yes?

• Using unattend install files to automate the creation of Win7 pooled VDIs in 2012 remote desktop services

Hi All,
I have a problem that I have been working on for the past week and hoping someone can provide the missing link for me.
Background
We currently have a 2008 "VDI" environment with both personal and pooled Windows 7 desktops deployed to thin clients. We have just set up our first 2012 Hyper-V server and plan to deploy pooled and personal VDIs under 2012. I have been working
on the process and successfully created both pooled and personal Windows 7 desktops using the Remote Desktop Services and creating the collections.
I created the golden image and sysprep'd it (/Generalize /OOBE /Shutdown). During the creation of the Pool collection I manually inputted the Virtual settings (i.e. the OU, etc). I notice there is an option to supply an unattend.xml file with the answers.
We are deploying the pool into a computer lab in the school for the students to use. I want the pool to revert to the pristine state after the student logs off.
Problem
When the user logs into the pooled desktop I notice that the activation for the Windows license has not been run. I am trying to use the unattend file to activate the license before the first log-in. Using the Windows System Image Maker I've install our
volume license key, but it does not activate. The only option I have to activate it is to run a synchronous command during first login. This can only be inserted in the OOBE phase. When the user logs in the license activates, but when they log out,
the machine reverts to the pristine state.
I confess I'm newbie to unattend installs but I've been reading the docs on line trying to figure out how to change this behavior. I'm also assuming this won't be a problem with the personal desktops pools.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hi,
Please make sure to following guide like this link to deploy the virtual desktops
Windows 8 / Windows Server 2012: Pooled Virtual Desktop Infrastructure
http://blogs.technet.com/b/askperf/archive/2012/10/31/windows-8-windows-server-2012-pooled-virtual-desktop-infrastructure.aspx
Regarding to activation, see introduction in this link:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn645522.aspx
Which did you use? for KMS as an example, you have to activate the master\template VM with the Windows version specific KMS Key and make sure that your KMS Server is auto discoverable.
The snapshot on the automatically created pooled collection VM is taken before KMS activation is initiated from the guest OS. So the KMS activation would take place only after user logs on. once the rollback is enabled, the pooled VM will
rollback to clean state and may perform the windows activation again when any user logs on to the VM again.
And you mentioned that you're using WSIM and installed Volume License Key, (I suppose you mean that you've typed the key in the "Product Key Selection" in WSIM), but as I know, we should leave the product key blank if you are using KMS host
for activation.

• VM Server 3.0.2 -Unable to add servers to new server pool

Hello everyone,
Please forgive me if I'm missing something obvious. I am new to Oracle VM, and just setting up a test platform for the first time. (used virtualbox before).
I have a network environment that has 2 VM servers, 1 VM Manager (all 3 machines running on separate physical boxes). I have a 70Gb SAN share connecting with iSCSI from a freenas host. I have been able to see both VM servers as unmanaged, and can see the SAN share as Unmanaged iSCSI Storage Array. It let me create a test server pool, and allocate the SAN share as an available resource. When I attempt to add either of the VM Servers to the pool, I get the following job failure with error:

End of Job
I have tried rebooting, rediscovering both servers, which complete successfuly. I just can't seem to get them to join any server pool that I create.
Can anyone point me in the right direction?
Many thanks in advance,
Jim

I'm not seeing any specific reason for the error in that output, which is annoying.
Also, double-check that DNS is working across all the machines: the Manager and the two Servers need to be able to resolve the hostnames of everything else on the network, so if you don't have DNS fully configured, you'll need to edit the /etc/hosts of all three machines first.

• BusinessObjects Explorer The creation of the data source object tree failed

Hi,
I'm trying to create a new information space in BusinessObjects Explorer 4.0. When I select the Universe I want to use and click "New" Information Space I get the following error.
Failed to retrieve the data source details.
The creation of the data source object tree failed.
I'm just using a local installation, BI Platform 4.0, Client Tools, and Explorer are all installed on my Windows 7 machine. It's intended to be a demo environment.
Any guidance would be appreciated!
Jeff

Hi Jeff,
first of all BI4 Enterprise is not supported on Windows 7 and it may not work properly for various reasons.
But you can give this a try:
Update the command line parametres of each of the Explorer Services to use a different value for the connection server libraries
The changes are made to the command line of each of the Explorer services
- Master
- Exploration
- Indexing
- Search
Remove the following from the command line parameters of the existing Explorer services
-connectivity_dir "C:/Program Files (x86)/SAP BusinessObjects/SAP BusinessObjects Enterprise XI 4.0//dataAccess/connectionServer"
Example of the original Explorer Master server command line parameters:
-Djava.awt.headless=true -Dosgi.configuration.area=configuration.BI40.ExplorerMasterServer1 -server -XX:MaxPermSize=256m -Dosgi.clean=true -Xmx1g -jar plugins/org.eclipse.equinox.launcher_1.0.101.R34x_v20081125.jar -loggingPath "C:/Program Files (x86)/SAP BusinessObjects/SAP BusinessObjects Enterprise XI 4.0/logging/" -connectivity_dir "C:/Program Files (x86)/SAP BusinessObjects/SAP BusinessObjects Enterprise XI 4.0//dataAccess/connectionServer" -serverkind explorerMaster
And update the server command line parameters with the following:
"-Dbusinessobjects.connectivity.directory=C:/Program Files (x86)/SAP BusinessObjects/SAP BusinessObjects Enterprise XI 4.0//dataAccess/connectionServer"
Example of an updated Explorer Master server command line parameters:
-Djava.awt.headless=true -Dosgi.configuration.area=configuration.BI40.ExplorerMasterServer -server -XX:MaxPermSize=256m -Dosgi.clean=true -Xmx1g -jar plugins/org.eclipse.equinox.launcher_1.0.101.R34x_v20081125.jar -loggingPath "C:/Program Files (x86)/SAP BusinessObjects/SAP BusinessObjects Enterprise XI 4.0/logging/" -Dbusinessobjects.connectivity.directory="C:/Program Files (x86)/SAP BusinessObjects/SAP BusinessObjects Enterprise XI 4.0//dataAccess/connectionServer" -serverkind explorerMaster

• Error when try to create new server pool

I want to create new server pool to the server manager.
At the last step of confirmation,it failed.error message is as follows:
An error occurred while creating working directories for the server pool. Ensure that at least one utility server exists in the server pool and both the username and password for the utility server are correct.
I think all the server info is correct. But I don't know why.
Thanks,
Mary

In my case, the VM Server was set to use DHCP. Once I reconfigured the interface to use a static address, I was able to successfully create the Server Pool.
Documentation should be reflected to clarify this.

• Problem with Server Pool

Hello,
I have an pool of physical servers at the company that supports the production environment of virtual servers.
This pool have 4 (0, 1, 2 and 3) domain servers.
I recently had a problem with the OVS-AGENT, and had to restart the whole pool.
After that, all virtual servers I start at the pool, using the VM Manager, always start at the same domain server, the domain number 3.
When I force the start using xm create, I can start the virtual server at domain server 0, 1 and 2 too.
The live migration only works with the shell command (xm migrate -l), using the VM Manager simple do nothing.
I try to force an especific virtual machine to run at an especific node, using Placement Policy at VM Manager, but when I try to start the server, this error occurs:
Start - /OVS/running_pool/441_n_psgl04
PowerOn Failed : Result - failed:errcode=20000, errmsg=No enough memory to run vm(/OVS/running_pool/441_n_psgl04), required memory=16384.
StackTrace:
File "/opt/ovs-agent-2.3/OVSSiteVM.py", line 124, in start_vm
raise e
Any idea what's happening? Is that some problem with the ovs-agent's database? How can I fix that with minimum of outage of the virtual servers?
I'm really concerned about this problem because this weekend we had a stop on the network that caused the restart of the cluster, and when the servers came back, all virtual servers started up on the same physical server, which caused a lack of resources.
Thanks for your help, and sorry about my poor english!

So, you need to work out why you don't have enough memory or why Oracle VM Manager isn't seeing all your servers. Check to see if all the servers are listed as "Active" on the servers tab of Oracle VM Manager. Also, you can try and restore the ovs-agent database to the entire pool by clicking the "Restore" button on the Server Pools tab.

• Error when trying to create Single-node Server Pool

We have an existing Oracle VM environment at our company that I have taken over support of. I would like to add a new Oracle VM server to the Manager, but I want it to be in it's own separate Server Pool by itself (no HA).
When creating the Server Pool in Oracle VM Manager, I am able to enter the new server information, assign all the roles and test the connection properly. However, when I hit next, I receive this error:
OVM-1011 Oracle VM Server newServerName.domain.net:MyPassword operation Checking Shared Storage failed: failed:<TypeError: list indices must be integers> .
The Oracle VM server is version 2.2, and I accepted most of the defaults when installing (local OVS formatted as ocfs2).
The Oracle VM Manager is version 2.1.5.
Thanks in advance for any help.

I have a VM Manager 2.2 that is managing a VM Server 2.0 (10.10.10.11). I am adding a second VM Server 2.2 as a separate environment with its own storage pool for management. I couldn't.

What does this cluster root not found means? I just want to use the same VM Manager to manage another independent VM Server. Is this possible?

I have a OVM 3.0.3 setup. The OVM manager and the Oracle 11g database are running as 2 seperate VM's on a X6270 M2 Blade which is on VMware ESXi.

I repeated the same exercise using NFS but the same error keeps popping up.
I have thoroughly checked the configuration of OVM servers as well as the OVM manager including, host file resolution, DNS entry, firewall, ntp etc...but nothing seems to work, I have re installed the complete infrastructure once again but does not seem to solve the problem.

Hi Pioneer
thanks for your inputs...but it does not seem to be working...recreated the LUN's assigned it to the OVM manager but server pool creation fails...the issue here is that the server pool creation process gets locked for more than 15-20 mnts and then fails...
BTW I was going through the following thread mentioned below and its seems to be a bug in OVM..which is resolved by installing the patch...please advise if I need to do the same. I will anyway once again recheck all the parameters
