Creative Firmware Probl

This is a rant, and then I have a question.
The Rant:
I've been visiting this forum for a while. Our family has three Zen Nano Pluses. I do not understand why the quality of Creative firmware is so low, and I'm asking if anyone understands what the company is trying to do. Gripes about firmware: ) The firmware can be quite difficult to update. The directions for a Nano update are quite incomplete. Just search this forum and you will find MANY people who have had extreme problems. 2) Why is the firmware so crappy? For example, I recently changed to version .2.03. It solved a backlight duration problem, but now the cue/review function can not be changed from "OFF". Why is it that Creative releases firmware that has not been tested? Or do they test it and release defecti've firmware anyway? They spend a LOT in terms of time and customer frustration and increasing negati've reputation of their company each time they release defecti've firmware. Surely it is best to release firmware that has been tested, and works? Or do the writers of Creative firmware just insure themselves of a job by continually playing with the software? Or is there something going on that I do not understand If so, please someone explain it to me.
The Question:
Is there any version of Nano software that has all functions working?
Thanks, and good luck if you update your Nano firmware.

So, no one knows if any version of Nano software has all its functions working?

• Creative firmware on a Dell DJ

I've got a Dell Dj 30 Gen 2 an in all that I've read, Dell DJs are Creative players with a Dell badge. It looks like Dell is getting out of the DJ players as they're only pushing the dittys and the DJ firmware hasn't been updated in a year.
I like the player pretty well; but, my major beef is that I can't view artists or albums under View by Genre. If you View by Genre all you get to do is View All Tracks, which for me, would list about 200 songs.
I searching this forum it I found some posts that elude to the creative players being able to "View Artists" and/or "View Albums" under a specific genre.
Would I be able to apply a creative firmware update to the Dell DJ?
Thanks,

gday fellas?i have noticed a tonne of these posts on here, and thought i might give my problem a whirl. Just before i was about to go out running, turned on zen touch and the blue screen came up with firmware problem, and hasnt changed since, its been a good 5 hours or so. i've tried everything, reboot, wait till battery dies, and still no change. I basically just want to back up all my songs on my computer and get something else, but now my cpu doesnt recognise the player, and i have no idea of what to do. Any help would be greatly appreciatedcheers lads?

hey fellas
i tried everything, complete reinstall of creative, firmware updates, driver updates and nothing happens. for the firmware update, it just sits on the same screen of "firmware problem" and the computer says please connect player to upgrade.... so its obviously not getting recognized. what can i do?

Sorry, if i tahke so much of your time!
I tried to install the usb 2.0 device with the driver windows/inf/wpdmtp.inf, but the PC says, that there are no informations about the maschine. And in the portable media center he also can't find the mp3-player. I have done 2 updates (WindowsMedia-KB8922-x86-DEU) and (windowsmedia0-kb902344-x86-intl), but the third (windowsmedia0-kb89536-x86-enu) isn't working, because the update isn't existing in my language. Can this be the problem or how can i normally connect to the mp3 player, if the mp3 player is in rescue/recovery Mode?
Thanks a lot!

• Creative Zen M: Freezing, then Firmware Proble

Well I go to turn on my player the other day as I am getting ready to leave for work, it turns on and then the song title and information comes up and then bamm.. it freezes.. I figured I would give it a few minutes to let it work the kinks out and get some energy pumping through... 5 minutes later nothing. 30 minutes later, still nothing... By this point I am getting pretty upset.. I check out the website and I reset it, goes trhough the process of booting up and it stops likea 30% through, does this every time. Then goes to the firmware problem screeen. Note: that it does not give me the choice of what I would like to do after reseting. The power button does nothing. I plugged it into my computer and it reconizes it but I cant update it or nothing. Any help would be appreciated.

Well for starters 4 years you probably need a new battery. In the meantime you can try to jumpstart the charging by connecting it to the wall charger & pushing the reset while it's plugged in. Check to see that the player is charging. If it starts flashing (charging) check that that the player is NOT getting HOT. If it gets hot DISCONNECT IT & don't attempt to charge until battery is replaced. If it does not overheat then leave it alone for at least 8hrs before even trying to turn it on

• Creative Zen Micro firmware probl

Hello,?I have at zen micro mp3 player and every time when I turn it on I'm getting firmware problem message. I can't turn it off and it just dies out when the battery is gone. I tried to plug it in my computer to upgrade the firmware but it doesn't detect the mp3 player or it doesn't take me to the recovery mode. When I turn it on I hear the clicking noise like the hard dri've is running. Any help will greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hi, looks like there is a problem during the boot, so i think that is a problem with a internal component. It can be the hard dri've although if you hear it, but i think it's another component (more serious).... You can see here ( http://www.hardwarezone.com/articles...d=33&cid=9&pg= ) how to open your zen and maybe try another HD, but do it only if you think you can put it back together. , but be careful ! If you are interested i can buy yours (low price ) for spare pieces to repair mine... Send a mail to ">franck_boute [email protected] ! Thanks Franck

• Fixing the creative zen xtra - creative firmware won't bring me dow

Hi all,
Recently my zen xtra crashed as a result of Creative's shoddy firmware! Anyway, I'm out of warrenty, creative want to try charge me about 20 quid and I ain't having that (read my other posts you'll hear the whole story)
Well now I've decided I'm gonna try fix things myself. I've ripped my player apart to reveal the 2.5" harddri've. I've got hold of a caddie to hold this in and connected to the computer. Dri've is not recognised (as i suspected, the firmware has corrupted toc and whathaveyou). So I'm formatting the dri've now, seems to be going ok (i'm thinking if I can't get the player working again at least I can make a 40gb external mini hard dri've)
Anyway, what I need now is to compare this hard dri've to another zen xtra one thats working and well. If anyone has (for some bizarre reason) backed up their zen dri've in this way cause you let me know. I need to know the file structure that it uses (as the software hides the real structure) and also the firmware (a working copy please!) that is as how it is installed rather than by using the installation software for the more conventional way :smileytongue:
Any help with that is appreciated, and those of you who are like me and have a ?200 paperweight should consider making it an external dri've like this also. (cheap caddies on ebay for those who want to know!)
hope this helps
phil

if i get a friend's zen xtra dri've and put it in mine, would you reckon it would work or am i likely to bugger up that too?
if the firmware is part in hardware then i doubt there's a lot i can do, but my intention was to copy my friend's dri've to mine then put it in and see if it works...
any ideas?

• Nomad Jukebox Zen Xtra FIRMWARE PROBL

In the spring of 2005, I bought a 40GB Nomad Jukebox Sen Xtra. It worked for a little over a month without any problems. Since then, it shuts off on its own and?it freezes. For the first time since I bought it, I attempted to load new music onto it. Now whenever I turn it on, it reads "re-building library..." and then it's stuck on "Firmware Problem."? I tried updating?the firmware from the website, but since?my computer no longer recognizes that?the player is?plugged in.
?I welcome any suggestions for this problem. Please help me so I can stop regretting my decision to buy this...

Kayla24?Looks like you're going to have to start regretting buying something?made by?Creative. There are oodles of stories on these boards regarding software problems and creative mp3 players. Creative have published ?'updates' that effecti'vely disable players but will not take any action unless the machine is still under warranty. The last e-mail I got from tech support said 'We know the firmware [update] disabled your machine, but unless it is still in warranty there is nothing we will do about it."? It was a Zen Xtra 30GB, it's now a paperweight. If your's still turns on, try reinstalling the firmware on a old pc/laptop that has never had Windows Media on it, but has been updated to media player 0. This sometimes works - otherwise join the crowds and get an i-pod. At least they work - and Apple fix 'em when they break 'em.

• Interest in building a creative firmware commun

I bought myself a muvo Micro n200 a little while ago. Great little player - I'm really enjoying it. However, I've found a number of small things (mostly with the interface, but some H/W) that irk me. Looking at the forums - it looks like lot's of other people have found them too. I'm talking about things like:
- Shuffle mode repeatedly plays the same folders & track, while completely ignoring others.
- The backlight generates a hum whenever it's on
- Display only shows the title from ID3 - not the artist/album/anything else
- Lack of configurability of options
- Clumsy operating experiences (ie no concept of back/up-a-level)
- Limited mp3 encoding functionality
- etc
- etc
I use my player on average an hour a day - and everytime I do, I encounter something like the above, and think "I could fix that, if i had the source". The hardware is great, (except for the odd annoyance - ever tried opening the belt clip wide enough to clip it onto a belt, without hitting the play/pause/on/off button?). I think it's a brilliant little package, (and the keyword really is little)! You'll notice that my list above are all firmware issues. I find myself constantly disappointed that the software lets down to the degree that it does what could be such a great little unit.
I was wondering, how much of a community is there around the muvo n200 - If there was an opensource firmware project available, would there be much participation? I'm obviously interested in the n200 - but it could encompass other players also...
I see a number of options - if there is enough interest out there, I'll approach creative with a proposal. My ideas are, in order of preference (and probably reverse order of likelihood):
- Get a current snapshot of the code from creative, and some technical documentation. Start an OSS project on sourceforge with it.
- Get a snapshot of the current code from creative. Not be allowed to give/show anyone else the code, but be able to make changes and distribute my own firmware file (no warranty of course), and take feature requests etc.
- Get some technical documentation from Creative on the player. Start my own project from scratch, distribute via sourceforge.
- Get documentation from creative, be allowed to distribute a binary file.
Failing all that:
- Have creative fix all the problems in the firmware, and distribute a kickass update. :-)
If that last one happens - I will certainly sign up for alpha testing, field research, and the like!
This would benefit Creative no end - It would rapidly become a high quality alternati've firmware, but would be one they don't have to support: they can offer a (potentially - with post purchase flashing) even better product, with absolutly no loss or expence to them. It would also develop a large community and following - numerous previous similar cases have shown that people around the globe gel together on projects like this, and can have dramatic effects on the number of units shifted. There is an enourmous amout of userbase out there that would be looking for an mp3 player, and would buy this particular one for the one reason that they can play with the source, and compile their own firmware. Many more will be prompted to buy one, where they hadn't even been previously in the market! Just coz it sounds like so much darn fun! And further to that - people out there like to support companies that support user communities through projects like this - even if they don't buy an n200, they will make the association that creative is a good brand name, and seek out their products in other lines. I know i would. :-)
There's probably a downside to this for creative too - though i haven't figured it out yet. If you have any ideas as to why they shouldn't/couldn't - please post here. The most significant issue I can see involves trade secrets and such - but nothing an NDA couldn't deal with quite satisfactorily.

• Micro Zen Firmware probl

Ok, so I have seen a ton on this already, but I am having trouble making them work for me so I am starting a new one. Here goes...
I have a micro Zen mp3 player, worked fine for most of the time I had it. Then one day it said "firmware problem" and showed me four options. I took them in roughly this order: Clean up, then a formatting option, then reboot. Then I foolishly chose the horrible misnamed "reload firmware" option and promptly screwed myself up. My Micro zen was not plugged into my computer at the time so I could not reload the firmware. Then a day or so later, my computer died as I was awaiting a response from Creative. I got a new computer, and it runs vista. Now, I plug it into my USB port and the computer recognizes that a new device is plugged in, but no other program (Windows Media player, etc) recognizes that it is there.
So, thats the back story. What do I do now? Other than hit my mp3 player with a hammer or otherwise break something out of frustration....

Bear with me as I lay out the problems/sequence of events:
- Got excited over the MTP support and upgraded. My laptop stopped recognizing the Zen
- Creative support thought that my MP0 maybe hosed; so I rollback and install MP0 again. No resolution.
- Went into to 'rescue mode' and wiped the disk clean
- Installed the old firmware; my laptop recognized the Zen
I pressed on and connected my Zen to a desktop and upgraded the firmware to MTP support (v2.x)
- I was able to sync with MP0 but frequently experienced problems with 'hang' during sync after 00%
- I disconnected the unit and MP0 aborted the sync
- Reconnect and sync would hang at the exact same song. Further, I noticed the following:
- Songs would sync up very fast (noticed around 800KB/S)
- The problem song would experience startup problems and would hang after reaching 00%
- I deleted the 'problem' song (which plays fine in MP0) and 'sync' continued without problems
- Created a playlist in MP0 which synced OK; but the Playlist is missing in Zen!!
Summary:
I think Creative released the f/w too early.

• ZEN firmware probl

Yurmed on the Zen 20GB MP3 player today and found it to be in "Recovery Mode". It said to reboot and reload firmware(?) I am completely stuck. It won't work at all and for no reason I can see!. Be v grateful if anyone help please! Thanks. Guy (UK)

If you have the Zen 20GB that is just that , ie without the words Touch, Jukebox, Vision or anything else after it ! (like the black one sold by amazon uk) then the original firmware for download is at select all-goes off page- and paste into browser, or look at downloads on Asia site. Previously covered in older posts. The model you have (if as described)
is the good-why don't-they-just-sell-it-everywhere-how-can-creative-be-so-stupid-not-to zen 20Gb I have.

Well, they don't sell the Zen in the Europe regions, but the Zen Sleek instead. I would prefer the Zen Sleek over the Zen! It looks a lot better and sleeker than the Zen!

• Urgent help - Xtra and new firmware probl

After trying to get my Xtra to work with my new vista P.C i discovered that i needed to upgrade the firmware.
so after reading that it deletes the contents of the Xtras HDd ( formats it) i backed up everything and then downlaoded the firmware, and ran the upgrade.
and then it all came to a stop, a windows mnessage came on screen about transfering files using windows media player or take no action, i left this message alone then my Xtra re-booted as advised on screen, and now its stuck at
Rescue mode v.3, with all the usual options, most of which end with 'Firmware error' Before returning to the rescue screen.
The firmware upgrade only tells me that the player is not conected.
the big bigf problem is thatr i need the player to work for tommorow. ( UK time is now 0:45pm, i ned it working by 2:00 am)

* To install this firmware
. Download the ZENMicroPhoto_PCFW_L6__3_0.exe file into your local hard disk.
2. Connect your player to your computer.
3. Double-click the firmware file and follow the instructions on the screen.

• This stinks. My Zen Micro tries to rebuild library.. then..it says firmware probl

it's been doing this for ages.. any suggestions? It won't even load past that. Ever.

Hi, I am not sure if this will help you. I offered the same help to someone else. I had an issue where my Zen Vision M: was not recognized by my computer. I got lucky. I uninstalled all programs related to the zen. I then did a complete cleaning of the registry of all related zen vision m: instances. After that I reloaded all the software and when I hooked it up to my pc it recognized it. I am thinking something corrupts the computer. Like many other porgrams, even after a uninstall, a program may leave references in the registry. I used regseeker which is a free program. It does a great search for items left behind by programs. You can find it by doing a Google search. Or you can always use the regedit/run command in XP. As for your search I would obviously try "zen micro". I would stay away from using "creative", if you have any other creative product like a soundblaster you will have to sift through many entries if you do. After cleaning the registry, install the zen micro programs and hook it up and see what happens. I hope it works for you. Even though my was a Zen Vision M: I also had much the same problem including the firmware reload problem, the rebuiding library etc.Cas
