Creative Players Quality, Relatively speaking

Pardon this post, but I have bought a bunch of mp3 players over the years (one iPod gen2, Rio, 4 Creative, 2 Sansa). I think I have a fair overall view of how things compare.
A forum such as this one tends to bring out nothing but problems with a player (on this board, naturally, problems with Creative players). This is to be expected, and of course is also used as a mutual-assistance troubleshooting area.
I tend to see a fair amount of product bashing of Creative players now and then. My experience, over several years and a bunch of players, has actually been pretty decent with Creative. Their software (currently Centrale), well, there's another story---but I don't use it and you don't have to, either.
Every player has their strong suit; Sansa integrates their SD card into the library (hey, YEARS ago my Rio S-0 did this, too!). iPod.....OK, can't think of a real positi've for the iPod except that it was "hip" at the time (should have been for $350.00!!!).
My Zen Touch (still limping along with bad HD sectors) sounds the best of any player I've used. My Zen Nano still works fine and has a AAA battery that will never go bad (put in a new one). My Zen 4GB is perfect, aside from that SD card library issue. I have a new Sansa Clip+ that sounds great, is tiny and convenient, but had such horrible battery life (just over 4 hours) that I sent it back (awaiting replacement).
Overall, we can complain to each other about the lack of a feature on a Creative player or whatever, but I have yet to find the one player that does everything, is cheap, has perfect support and software, works with all online services, etc.. Creative, I think, has come closest overall. Just my .02 if anybody is reading these boards and gets the idea Creative makes junk. All 4 of the Creative Zens I've bought over several years are still working. 2 of these are a Zen Touch and Zen Micro. I have Windows 7 on all my computers and they work with that, too, so they also remain compatible with modern software (I use WMP 2 to sync).

I'll second that. I agree that Creative's software (Media Explorer, MediaSource, Centrale) is generally pretty clunky, and tech support is not very satisfying. However, I have found the overall value of my Creative players to be quite good. I've had 5 so far:
. Rhomba 256 MB: The player that got me started with Creative. Nice compact unit, great sound, excellent FM radio. I've never understood why Apple never included a radio function on their iPods until very recently.
2. Zen Micro (can't remember HD capacity): Nice form factor. I really liked the touchpad interface--a good answer to the iPod's clickwheel. Had a problem with the headphone jack, but Creative fixed it without any hassle.
3. Zen V Plus 8 GB: Incredibly compact player that still has a decent screen. I think I've had it for almost 4 years, and haven't had a problem. My wife uses it now to listen to audiobooks or NPR while she jogs.
4. Zen Vision:M 30 GB: Buy.com sent a refurbished unit to me by accident instead of the $30 earphones I had ordered, and they weren't interested in correcting the mistake, so it just ended up being a great deal! This really is a terrific player, with amazing sound, a great display, and a very intuiti've and responsi've interface. At first, I thought the hard dri've was faulty because some tracks would skip, so I shelved the unit for a while. But then when I upgraded to Windows 7 and started from scratch with the player, I found that the skipping problem was gone. Not sure what the problem was--maybe something with Vista? Anyway, the only drawback for the ZVM is its lack of AAC support. Also, it would be so great if Creative or Cambridge Soundworks would start making their Playdock again--I would love to have a speaker dock for the ZVM, but they're all for the iPod these days. I know that Playdocks pop up on eBay occasionally, but they usually go for at least $200, and the bidding can be pretty fierce.
5. Zen 32 GB: My workhorse, and it seems to get better and better. Compared to other players on the market, I think it's still the smallest unit to boast 32 GB of storage. Once again, great sound, compact size, and nice interface. I love the AAC support, because I wanted to consolidate my music library into AAC files only (I'm ashamed to say that I just had to have an iPod, since my car has integrated iPod support), rather than have duplicate AAC and WMA files. Initially, I had problems with AAC files playing on the Zen (audio playback errors--see the Creative support page). But recently, that problem seems to have disappeared with Windows 7 and the new Centrale that was released for the Zen. So now my Zen is close to perfect, with the exception of the well-known SD card nonintegration.
I've been fortunate not to have to deal with any white or black screens of death. I've also found WMP2 support to be pretty seamless for the Zen V Plus, ZVM, and Zen (haven't tried the Rhomba or the Zen Micro). The only thing WMP2 can't do is manage a playlist on the unit, but I can use Centrale for the Zen and Media Explorer for the ZVM.

  • Creative X-Fi releas

For all of you, who have been asking abut the X-Fi, release dates configurations features etc...
Creative has officially released the Sound Blaster X-Fi sound card range from top to bottom: 6dB at 400 USD to 29 USD and 06dB.
The Press release can be accessed here: http://www.creative.com/press/releas...me.asp?pid=263

Why do i need a new card with new chipset, if my OS support a maximum quality like a SBLi've!Value.(emu0k chipsetquality instead of chipset emu0k2 or X-FI or newer)
    Evidence: http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-doc/index.php?vendor=.%23vendor-Creative_Labs....#matrix
I mean since tuesday last week we can't update windows anymore.(the users who're forced to use windows because soundcardsupport is so bad under 4 example Linux, so almost all of them with illegal copies to get the 96KHz/24bit sound). Why X-fi ?, i want my Li've!Value again , because that's the only full supported card now in Linux (emu0k drivers , there're no emu0k2 linuxdrivers yet , to get 96KHz / 24bit)...and i'm only complaining about the hardware support here , there's also the question; will there be software for the card like eax/cmss/dts etc. but then for Linux?...(guess not because i'm waiting for it since i bought my first soundblaster(a Li've!value))
So first i want full Linux support (Creative also give a Linux installation Cd with your soundcards, not only windows drivers!! learn from Nvidia)then i'll by a new SB card...
Now i've a SBLi'vevalue in server with full support , and my htpc can run Linux, but then the Audigy2zs runs as a Li've!value (so no 24bit)...
So i can by a X-FI card , but if X-FI = sounding like HIFI on linux ,(lol) then why should i need X-FI if my OS(Linux) doesn't support it.
And because of Microsoft's strategie , more people will be forced top choose Linux , so HIFI
Only someone from Creative can explain why they only offer windows driver/setup Cd with the card , instead of a extra Linux Driver CD/setup.Message Edited by www_96KHz_tk on 08-09-2005 04:04 AM

  • Creative Zen stone with speaker not recognized by Vista 32

My creative zen stone with speaker is not recognized by computer. Downloaded starter pack and it worked, but the first time i disconnected it and connected again, the device is not in "my computer". It is listed as working properly under "safely remove hardware". Uninstalled drivers, and connected again, driver was installed and I am told the device is ready to be used, but it is still no where to be seen, and update tools etc. also does not recognize connected device.
    thank you

Try going into "Control Panel->Administrati've tools" and clicking on "Computer Management". Find "disk management" in the left pane and click it. Your Stone should be in the right somewhere. I think you need to right click, then "choose dri've letter and paths" and give it a dri've letter with the "add" button. Let us know if that works.

  • Error: You have more than one Creative players connected. - Recovery Tool for ZEN

My Zen 4GB cannot be turned on anymore after a failed firmware upgrade (The installation hung up). I tried to run the firmware upgrade executable file again but the player must be on. So I tried to hardware reset by switching the power slide on while pressing the play button, but it still doesn't start. I downloaded and ran the Recovery Tool while the player was connected, but an error message appeared: "ERROR: You have more than one Creative players connected. Please remove all but one, click "OK" to exit and then run this program again." - There was no other players connected but the ZEN. Please help... What can I do

I have this very exact same problem with the same model. Did you ever find a solution to this?

  • Napster to Go and Creative players:Pointle

Whats the point of subsciption services when the battery in Creative players don't last long enough! My Sleek Photo is 60% full after 45 minutes of music. Thats with contrast at 60%, volume at 4 and screen turn off to 0 secs. Napster songs are encoded at 92kb
    ps.
    Why not 28kbps?
Does anybody else use Napster to Go? Do you have the same problem?Message Edited by nano on 06-0-2006 05:56 AMMessage Edited by nano on 06-0-2006 05:57 AM

I use subscription music from Yahoo Music Unlimited To Go on a Zen Microphoto for 6 months and on my brand new Creative Zen Vision M.
I get about 8 hours on the Zen Microphoto on a single charge. Enough to dri've both ways to the mountains for skiing and back. (~4 hours each way).
I haven't tested the lifetime of the battery on the Zen Vision M.
One thing for sure ... if you are constantly browsing around moving from album to album or track to track, that significantly decreases the usefulness of a full charge. But if you just put the player on random play and don't touch the interface, better yet, lock the interface with the power switch, battery lifetime is reasonable.
And the point of subscription, for me, is being able to fill the player with all the music that will fit for a low monthly fee. It was a major reason not buying an iAmAPod.

  • Any Creative Players with a Persistent Backlight ("Always On") Featu

    Hello All,
I am interested in finding an MP3 Player which will allow me to turn the backlight on all the time so that I may see the current time index while songs are playing. I've seen other people suggest this while searching this forum, but cannot confirm that any of the Creative Players has this option. My coworkers use this feature on their iPods, but I would prefer to buy a creative player.
Does anyone know if there is a player from Creative which allows me to leave the backlight on at all times while songs are playing?
    Thanks!

    Welcome chrislamartin
By default, press Fn+Space will either turn off or on the backlit keyboard. You will see a backlit logo on the space button.

  • Do you know if any creative players support lyrics

I am planning to buy one of the latest mp3 players but I now have concerns that new Zen 8GB might not have lyrics support. Lyrics support is very important for me in choosing the player because I want to be able to follow songs when I play them either in English or other languages. As far as I know new ipod nano can support lyrics but it doesn't have fm radio and recorder.
At the same time thinking about creative, if creative doesn't support then it will be not hard to implement lyrics in the new firmware upgrade because lyrics can be stored inside of mp3 files so it is just matter of extracting them from mp3.

    NO.
I doubt they would in a future firmware either as they only care about improving the performance(which should be fine when they first made the players) and not adding needed features.
So I would recommend getting like the Cowon D2 or any of their players as I'm pretty sure they all have lyric support.
Sorry to advertise, but Cowon is the only other company I know of with lyric support, and excellent sound quality.

  • Creative Players : How many people experienced dust under screen probl

I had my zen micro and after about 5-6 months, dust started to appear under the screen. How can dust gets into the player and the screen?
I believe this to be a very wide spread problem, so would encourage people facing the same problem to speak up.
And i would like to heard creative's explanation on the matter, if not then we'll just have to go with poor design or poor quality control.

effects the touch series also. dont bother using compressed air, only makes it worse

  • Creative I-Trigue L3450 Speaker System

    Hi.
I am interested in the above product but was just wondeirng if anybody could answer some questions for me.
Is it possible to plug a USB MP3 player into the controller of this system and have the music played? The following link seems to suggest that a USB MP3 player can be plugged in:
    http://www.boysstuff.co.uk/product.a...id=&src=Search (st picture)
    Can Anybody confirm this?
Also, must this system be connected to a PC or can it simple be plugged into the mains and have MP3 players etc run off it's
    Any help would be brilliant!
    Thanks!

    badboyuk,
The USB port on the volume control is what we call a M-PORT. Basically, it does what you mention by it's only compatible with M-PORT compatible player and as far as I know, only the Creative MuVo NX is supported. The speaker doesn't need to be connected to the computer only. You can connect to any audio source that's using a 3.5mm stereo minijack output.
You can also download the user guide for this speaker from the Product Documentation page for more information regarding the speaker system.

  • Creative Inspire T5400 Center Speaker Problem

    Hey Creative,
I use the Audigy Platimum Sound Card with Audigy drive with Inspire T5400 speakers. Ever since i got the speakers I have noticed either the center speaker plays so quiet its almost not hearable or it doesn't play at all. This happens for music alot. I checked all the hookups and I got the AudioHQ and Windows set for 5.1 surround speakers. What is the problem?
    Thanx
    Adam

    Adamb10,
You will need to enable CMSS though Playcenter for the Audigy. Launch playcenter and put it in player mode (not jukebox mode) on the right hand side there is a button that expands out the player to display a number pad. At the bottom of the numbers there is a button marked CMSS, set it to on or movie mode and it should give you what you want.

  • New Creative players don't work with Dell Laptops

i found out the source of my problem (pretty sure anyway)
Dell underpowers their USB ports on the laptops, so then i can't use my Vision:M because it is not recognized, even though all the files between my desktop and the laptop are nearly identical (all the MTP support stuff is for sure)
just thought i would share, and i hope creative comes up with a fix, there is going to be a hell of a lot of pissed of people

**bleep**!? I have this problem too (perhaps). I have now gotten 2 Zen Nano Pluses and they both APPEAR to work out of the box. As soon as I hook it up to my Dell C series (hey, my company makes us keep them 4 years...) and sync the music, the thing plays for 3 seconds and shuts off. The only odd thing I see is that I get this message about hooking to a /2 powered USB hub, but the message seems to indicate everything SHOULD work fine, but it seems to fry the inards of the Zen. Oh and to the guy who implied that Creative should not have to create a fix for this, well, who do you think makes a **bleep**load of computers in the world? Dell. Seems to me I'd want to know how my little mp3 players acted with computers from one of the world's largest makers.
And if any of you guys from Creative are bothering to look in on these forums, people in the real world don't replace their computers every year. They keep them for several years. So, please keep some old models around so you won't have a bunch of pissed off customers.
But more to the point. Are internals of the mp3 player fried or can they be fixed with software. And applying the firmware RETROGRADE doesn't work. I say retrograde because my Nano plus had .04 firmware out of the box and the little file the techie sent me DOWNGRADED the firmware to .03. Marvelous!? Such technical support. It leaves one speechless.
