Creative Zen 16 gig as Hard Dr

2 Questions:
1. Is there any way to get music to and from this player through a normal dri've letter interface?
Example: My 3 year old Archos Gmini XS is completely capable of doing this. I connect it via usb to any windows computer, and bam!! A dri've letter appears, all I do is drag music/files to and from it (there really is no distinction between music and "non-music" files to the player). Can this not be done with the Creative Zen 6 (A product that came out THREE years after my Archos)?
If not, can this be documented on your website so that there are no confused consumers who purchase it, only to discover that it in fact CANNOT do this. This is a major deal to me (the biggest deciding factor in whether or not I buy an mp3 player).
The reason this is such a big deal is this: I am at work, I discover an mp3 or podcast of some sort from a co-worker that I would like to listen to. I have no soundcard on this computer. I download the file to my local hard dri've. I plug in my Creative Zen 6 gig. Nothing comes up. I must now install some heavyweight megasloth software from a CD that I left in my closet at home. But not to my computer. instead, to my employer's computer! My company does not allow such megasloth software to be installed since there is a strict company policy against bloated megasloths. Oh well, can't really put any new music on my player at work, sucks for me for buying a Creative product.
2. Is there a way to use the directory structure I have transferred to the player to navigate my music collection.
My problem is this, I have a lot of mp3's. I have them very well organized with normal WINDOWS FOLDERS (something VERY nati've to windows and yet extremely powerful and flexible, and amazingly the file system has been used for over 3 decades now). I transfer all these files to the player which look organized in windows explorer. I disconnect my player, choose music, and guess what, a huge mess of artists, genres, etc. Why?!!
Because this catalogue is based on the ID3 tags of the mp3's, something that I've neglected to perfect in my music collection because they are organized by directory.
I want to make something extremely clear to Creative and any other manufacturer of mp3 player out there. I WILL ALWAYS USE THE FILE SYSTEM AS MY BASIS OF ORGANIZATION FOR MY MUSIC COLLECTION, EVEN IN THE YEAR 2307. Not only is it time tested and widely used, it also provides unlimited levels of nesting. How the Creative Zen 6 gig can't do something that my Archos Gmini XS could do three years ago makes me feel like mp3 players are moving backwards as time goes on (and yes, the Archos Gmini XS can also build a catalogue based on the ID3 tags so its got all it's grounds covered)
In addition to the fact ID3 tags limit the user to three levels of nesting (Genre, Artist, Album) it also means I have to maintain both the Folder Structure (I will always organize by folders) and the ID3 structure. Put in very simple terms, I have to do the SAME WORK TWICE. I would strongly prefer not to do this.
If anyone can offer any help or just straight up tell me that my wishes are not going to come true, I would appreciate itMessage Edited by byronlong on 2-9-200704:6 PM

You need to install the software to use the ZEN as an plug n play device.
But you can use the ZEN as an SD Card Reader on any computer without installing the software. So, get a SD card, use the Zen as a reader and listen to the song on the SD via the Zen.
Thats the best way i can think of, for now.
Maybe any firmware will add a plug n play funtcion in the future.

  • Creative zen 20 gig wont install on win 7

)cHello I have the creative zen 20 gig model number hd005, this is now end of life on the creative website and is unsupported by win 7?, is there any way I can install the software so i can synch with my music, somehow had it working with vista but cant get it to work with win 7, dont want to but another player just because it wont synch with win7.

    Hi,
Please ensure the CD supports Windows 7, any supported OS is listed on its label.
If required download the latest software below:
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=mp-71555-4&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&...
Follow the installation till the EULA screen and press the Internet Connection options link.
Select No, Thanks for both of the options and press OK.
Accept the EULA and continue the installation, that should prevent such hanging within the software update stage.

  • Creative Zen 8 gig - How do I play all videos at one time and skip to next vid

I was able to do this with the Creative Zen V plus 2 gig, why can't I with the large and more expensi've one?
    THanks,
    John

I have the same question as the original poster.
I am loading the zen with music video files only (wma) and would like to have the same playback options as mp3s.
I understand video file dont have "tags" like mp3s used to facilitate searcing for tracks eg. artist, album etc and i wonder if this could be a problem.
The question is...How do i get the player to play a list (or folder contents)) of video files either randomely or consecuti'vely without having to do it manualy for each and every video ie set up a playlist. Or is this not possible
    Thanks

  • Creative Zen 2 Gig displays incorrect album a

My creative Zen 2 G with the current firmware stores incorrect album art for artists that have the same album name such as "Best Of" or "Greatest Hits", The only way around it is to rename all of my greatest hits to something unique such as Rolling Stones Greatest Hits, I have thoousands of these songs tagged that way.
    Any Ideas?

It is listed at the top of the forum to read the FAQ before posting. I don't work for Creative though, so am not responsible for the other content.
I don't know why your files aren't working. The theory is that as long as the files are tagged with this, and you are queuing them via the album part of the music library, they will queue in order. If they aren't queuing then there's either some specific bug with the player, or there's something wrong with your files. You might want to try another tagging program to double check that it isn't some issue with the way MP3Tag writes its files, and also make sure to remove the v tag just in case this is causing an issue.

  • Creative Zen Micro - Freezes/Clicks - Hard Drive Malfuncti

I know that many of you are having similar problems with your Zen Micros...here's the deal with mine (it is a 6gb, probably doesn't matter).
I bought it a year ago, used it for two months, then it sat in its box in a drawer for probably four months. When I went to use it again, battery was completely de-charged (or so I assumed, because it was not turning on). So I plugged it in, it began to charge, but would not turn on to play and was not recognized by the computer, even after several hours of charging. Additionally, when I held it up to my ear, I could hear a repeated clicking noise, like something was stuck inside. I took it back to Circuit City... obviously, it was too late to return it. They had a technician look at it for an hour, but he said it looked like it was fried.
I continued charging the Zen for probably 2 days straight after that, and finally, it turned on and played like normal. I thought the problem had been that the battery was just far too de-charged and it just needed that extra 24-hours of being plugged in. So it continued working for a few months.
Then I put it away for a month. Again, it sat in its box. I took it out a few days ago...same old problem.
    - when I plug it into the computer, sometimes it turns on and charges with the battery symbol in the upper corner, and sometimes it just goes to the Creative main screen (as if it's going to turn on and play) but just freezes.
    - when it is not correctly charging (just frozen on the main screen), it always continues with the clicking noise.
I read responses on this forum that said to try banging it against the table. I did this and the clicking noise did stop, but it still stays frozen on the main screen.
I am a struggling, broke college student who foolishly spent $200 on this mp3 player...and in the past year, I have only been able to use it for about 5 months. So many people have the same problem with the Zen Micro that it makes me curious as to why Creative seems to not be doing anything to help. They say to send it in and get a new hard dri've - but that will cost $200...and at this point, I would only have to spend about half of that to buy a new Zen Micro altogether! Most of my family and friends use IPods and I have never witnessed such problems.
    Anyone have any suggestions?

Yea, I've read the FAQ and troubleshooting. I can get into rescue mode but when I select any option it then freezes along with more clicking. I've spent the last two hours reading about this, I'm quite certain it's hard dri've failure/sticking. My last mp3 player got stolen and I had to wait a week to receive my zen micro in the mail. Now I have to wait another few weeks to have it fixed. I need it at work, so my life sucks without my mp3 player. This is very not cool. Thanks for your reply, btw. Unfortanetly, I don't think there is anything I can do.

  • Creative Zen Sleek - Battery or Hard Drive dyi

Hi - I've had a Zen Sleek for a little over 2 years now, without too many problems. Until now. The battery seems to only last about 5 hours (previously was 0+), but even more annoying is that it keeps crashing when I try to turn it off, needing a reset, and sometimes even a clean disk and reboot before it will work again. The problem seems worse when the battery is low.
Firmware is up to date (2.0.03), should I try reflashing the firmware, or is this likely to cause more problems?
Any help appreciated. Pleased with the product, but it should not really be dying after only 2 years...
    Thanks

I had the same issue.. use a small pin to reset the player while it is plugged into your computer. the reset switch/hole is next to the data port.

  • Creative Zen Micro Hard Drive Er

Hi, my Creative Zen Micro has an hard dri've error. I tried Recovery Mode on it but once it turns on, it doesn't display Recovery Mode but Hardri've error. I was wondering if anyone could help. I was playing a song in wma format and I have the latest firmwire, v..0. As it was playing, it froze on me, I took the battery off to shut it, and when I inserted the battery back in, it came up with the hard dri've error message. Can anyone help me?

Hard disk error is a serious one unfortunately, and as I'm sure you guessed it means the hard disk has failed in some way.
You can try the advice here in the Zen FAQ at Nomadness.net at your OWN RISK.
If you aren't under warranty you can contact Creative Support to see if they will repair it. If you want to try repairing it yourself, taking the risk the hard disk is at fault, then you can follow Rudi Cheow's excellent guide. There's also a thread here at the Zen Nomadness.net forum on compatible dri'ves, and the last page of Rudi's guide also has information on this.

Do I go out to buy a new one or will Creative replace my battery??I forgot to add in the earlier post, that I will have to charge it daily and the night before usually have 3 bars and it never has run down so far.

  • 30 gig Creative Zen Firmware Prob

    <SPAN>
Hi I own a 30 gig Creative Zen Xtra Mp3 player and have been having a problem with it. I have owned it for 3 months. When I turn the player on it starts to rebuild the library but crashes about ?s of the way in and states that there is a firmware problem. Once this screen has come up I cannot turn the player off so I have to remove the battery. I followed instructions posted on another site and entered the rescue menu and selected re- install OS. I deleted the old one and downloaded the <SPAN>Firmware Update version .20.08. I opened the file and a warning came up saying that the firmware I have on my mp3 player is more recent than the one I wanted to install. The mp3 player I own is a old model so I thought that this was wrong. I continued and installed the new firmware. I rebooted the player and it rebuilt the library to the previous level only to crash again stating a firmware problem despite the update. After this I selected the clean up option. It scanned the disc but nothing changed.
<SPAN>I have no other options from the player except to enter the rescue menu. I cannot even turn the player off. When I reinsert the battery it turns on and attempts to rebuild the library and then crashes and the firmware crashes icon will stay until the battery runs out. I run Windows XP home on my computer and I can find no other people complaining of the exact symptoms as mine. Thanks for any help.

If you have tried all this then I can only think the player is faulty.
If it's under warranty then obviously contact Creative Support. If it's not under warranty you can of course also contact Creative Support to get it repaired.
It might be the hard disk which is at fault which you can replace yourself, but it's hard to know this is the problem for sure.

  • Bug Found and Fix Found Creative ZEN XFI Style 32 Gig

9Bug Found and Fix Found> Creative ZEN XFI Style 32 Gig?Hello I was having problems getting my MP3 TAGS to show up on a number of my MP3's.
Whenever I loaded my files onto my ZEN it would show up as a Voice under Recordings.
And the file name would be "MIC and the date file created etc..."
I noticed that these files where all starting with the letters MIC at the front of the filename...
    For instance: Michael_Jackson_Thriller.mp3?? or? Michael_W_Smith_Let_it_rain.mp3
and so on and so on... ANY file that started with the letters M I C? would be thrown in as a voice recorded file and the TAG would not operate.
I have the latest Firmware on my MP3 Player.
The fix was just to change the file name so it did not start with MIC... so i went and switched Michael Jackson to M.Jackson and also switched Michael W Smith to M W smith.
The tag showed up appropriately and I have had no problems since.
It would be nice if there was another Firmware update so that MP3's could start with the letters MIC also I was hoping to bring awareness to this situation for other users.

=Re: Bug Found and Fix Found> Creative ZEN XFI Style 32 Gig?I did three methods of?loading the files.
I used Windows Media Player to sync the files.
I used Creative Central to transfer the files.
These two methods produced results where the file starting with MIC turned into a voice recordings.
I also had problems just copying and pasting the files (using windows explorer).
I have not had any problems with any other file. I normally use MP3Tag to tag my files.
However i even tried using Windows Media to tag the file and I even tried using Creative Central to tag the files.
I tried as many work arounds as possible. But once i renamed the file it worked.

  • Creative Zen Touch - Hard drive problems - HD upgr

    Hi!
I bought my Creative Zen Touch almost a year ago now. Yesterday my hard dri've went crazy. The sound was a funky rythm, 0 DJ "scrathes" then one more high-pitched sound. In the Rescue menu I try to format the hard dri've and it responds with "Hard dri've problems."
Yes, it has fallen down several times. I don't know what caused it to malfunction this time though. It suddenly just stopped working. It looks like a mess, was bought over internet under the name of a mother of my frien; to make a long story short. I have no warranty :/
So here's what I decided; I opened it up to take a look inside it. Here's what I found:
    - One loose battery, too much dirt on the sticky stuff.
    - One hard dri've, model: HTC424020F7AT00
And here is my main questions:
    - Can I use a 40gb Hitachi dri've in my 20GB Zen Touch? This is just the big brother, so the dri'ves are pretty much the same except storage space. http://tinyurl.com/4yurr
    Thanks

  • What type of hard drive do I need for a Creative Zen Vision

    Hey everybody.
I have a Creative Zen Vision:M, and unfortunately after dropping it, the hard drive has decided to pack up!
I have decied to replace the hard dri've, but wondered which hard dri'ves are compatible with the Zen Vision:M? I know the hard drive is a .8" drive, but that's all I know what to look for so far...
Any help would be much appreciated.

    Hi,
It uses a standard 2.5" HDD. You can find them around in any good computer shop. You can use larger (capacity) as well. If you wish to find exactly the same one please try:
    (a) Open Device Manager,
    (b) Expand Disk drives item
You can see brand and model of the current HDD on your computer. If it failed already, pull it out and check.
    Regards.

  • Creative Zen Player Hard Disk Problem!

There's a problem with my Zen player.
I was listening to music when suddenly it hanged and became very warm.
After recharging the battery, the zen player did not load properly and instead listed out 4 options for me to choose:
    Clean Up
    Format All
    Reload Firmware
    Reboot
    Rebooting doesnt help at all.
Clean up refuses to work and nothing happens when I press yes.
Format All gives me an error. Says that it is a harddisk error.
Reloading Firmware is impossible because Creative MediaSource Organizer cannot detect my Zen player when I plug in onto the computer. It also says that there is a harddisk error.
Is there anything I can do? Can I get a refund? I hope this will not happen again because my Zen player is only around 2~3 months old and this shows that Creative Zen players have poor hardware. I hope I need not retract my praises of Creative's Zen player.Message Edited by lijuliju on -7-2005 0:59 PM

Your faulty player does not equate to Creative having poor hardware. Be realistic.
Hard disk problem error not surprisingly indicates there is a problem with the hard disk, so contact support to get a replacement (click the link Support > Downloads on this page).

  • Creative Zen Touch 20 Gb as hard dr

    Hello,
    I am new in this.
I have the Creative Zen with 20 Gb and I am trying it.
    I have some problems.
I have problems if I use the device as hard dri've. I have some errors as "Se ha producido un error desconocido y la operaci?n no ha tenido ?xito" ("An unknown error has produced and the operation has not successed"), "No se puede escribir en este archivo" ("It not posible write in this file") or "El reproductor no est? conectado" ("The reproductor is not connected")
Sometimes works correctly, I can read/write into the Zen, and other times not works.
When I try to read some data from the Zen I have the error "No se puede leer desde el dispositivo Jukebox" ("It not posible read from the Jukebox device".
I have tried with two diferents computers (Windows XP Professional and Windows 2000 Professional) without success.
Other question is that if th firmware is updated to version 2.xx, the Zen's software is not required when I would like to connect to another computer? Someone has updated the firmware? with problems? It is dificult to update the firmware?
    Thank you very much,

    Hola Jordi,
Yo a?n no he comprado ning?n otro reproductor.

  • Does the Creative Zen Work like any other external hard dri

I am looking to buy a Creative Zen Sleek or Touch and need to know something. Do you need to use the software and drivers with it or does XP recognize it as a "removeable disk" like a flash dri've or like the ipod.
    Thanks
    David

I'm guessing that WMP will work with the player irrespecti've of the firmware version.
I'm not sure where you bought your player, but in Europe they seem to have shipped with one version, whereas in the USA they seem to have shipped with another to support PlayForSure subscription downloads.
Perhaps a mod can confirm this, and whether Europe will get the PlayForSure firmware if this is the case?
