[creativity] Looking for recommendations regarding font, spacing etc.

Hi! This isn't the normal technical kind of question, I just don't know where else to ask.
So I have this 1366 * 768 (15,4") laptop screen.
Screenshot with two windows: http://oi59.tinypic.com/f5u0p.jpg
Screenshot with one window, divided by tmux: http://i59.tinypic.com/182kyf.png
What I want to do is to have at least 80 columns of text in two frames side by side. This is top priority.
Yes, most things are still just defaults, but what would you guys do to achieve that?
Selecting another font that doesn't use so much space in between the characters? Font used is Source Code Pro, 12pt.
I find it hard to read non-antialiased fonts (like Terminus) and I don't want to set it smaller because I still want it to be readable from 1m far away.
Is it possible to reduce the space between character by 1px? (The terminal is st and using fontconfig string)
Or would you rather reduce borders from bspwm and the space between windows?
Also I'm aware that bspwm doesn't cut in half, but even if it would, than the space wouldn't be enough for 2*80 chars.

It's been a few years since I've done anything in LT.
Motion's text capabilities make it really worth learning for titling concepts. It's not hard and it can produce great results – better than I could do on LT.
So consider downloading Motion and experiment – or try Motion out on someone else's Mac. (AE is a bigger commitment.)
Good luck.

  • A Question and Looking for Recommendations........

First the question: We have a dLink DI-634M wireless router that is hardwired with Cat5 cable to our 17" MBP. We also have a regular MB that we connect wirelessly. And also a Dell Inspiron that we connect wirelessly through the DI-634M. Our problem is that after periods of non-use, we lose our internet connection. It's easily restored by removing the power from the DI-634M and then plugging the power back in. But it's a pain in the butt. Any suggestions as to how to prevent this from happening?
Looking for recommendations: I'm thinking I'd like to get another wireless router anyway. Something in the new N band or whatever it's called. But the main reason is to be able to wirelessly connect external hard drives and printers to the router. Most especially the external hard drives. We've got a little LaCie 160 gig Porsche drive that we use to backup the small MB. Right now I have to make the hard wire connection and do the backup manually. But if we had access to the hard drive wirelessly, I could schedule regular backups for the small MB. So......what wireless routers can you guys recommend? Brand? Model? Which have the least problems? Etc., etc.......
    Thanks bunches!

    Hi,
I don't think I can offer a solution, but I do have a similar problem with my router (supplied with my Sky broadband set-up). It's a Netgear router with 4 outputs. Until a few minutes ago, it was lying on my desk horizontally, but after attaching 2 plastic legs, it now stands vertically. I'm hoping this solves the overheating, as it is left switched on constantly (which probably contributes to the fact that I too have to 're-boot' it from time to time when I lose my Broadband connection).
    Hope this helps.

  • New Mac user, new to Wireless - looking for recommendations on a router

Hello all! I am new to Macs, and to wireless in general. I just bought a used Powerbook which of course has wireless capability. So my next step will be to set up a router. However, I have no experience with this, and am definitely not a computer geek at heart. So I am looking for recommendations on a router/wireless network system that seems to work well with Macs (and PC's as I now have both) and doesn't require vast amounts of computer networking knowledge to set up and get working. What works well? What should be avoided? Many thanks for your input! (Oh, if it makes any difference, my internet connection is DSL.)

I would strongly recommend the AirPort Extreme. Its simple, doesn't do much but it does the job perfectly. It never drops out and the distance of the signal is far (you can be online in your back and front yard). And its really easy to setup. And it works with both systems. But I do recommend getting a new one instead of a used one because you'll need the newer version of AirPort Assistant to set it up because older version of Tiger doesn't have that programme pre-installed.

  • Looking for recommendations - new internal drive for MBP

    Hi all,
I have a 17" MBP core 2 duo from a couple of years ago, with a 100GB 7200rpm drive. I want to swap out the drive with a new 500GB drive, still 7200rpm, so I'm looking for recommendations as to what people think are the current best of the crop. Any suggestions?
    Cheers,
    Antonio

I was looking for a 500GB 7200RPM drive for my MBP 15" at the end of 2008, but no one made one yet. I saw the Seagate ST9500420ASG 500GB 7200RPM 16MB BUFFER SERIAL ATA listed as coming soon on MacMall and a few other places in January 2009 and ordered it as soon as it was available.
I had done some research on power consumption and performance... Tom's Hardware had some good info on the subject. The fastest drives at the time were the 320GB 7200 RPM and 500GB 5400 RPM. If the trends I came across during my research held up, power consumption for the new Seagate shouldn't have affected my battery life too much. All my research seemed to confirm this.
Now that I have been using the drive for a few months, I can tell you that my batter life has taken a HUGE hit. I used to easily get 5 hours with my old 120 GB stock drive... now, I'm lucky if I get 2 hours. Plus, it seems that this drive gets hot enough to cause performance issues.. I'm not sure if that's the case yet, but I will be bringing my MBP into the Apple store to check on it.
At this point, I'm willing to sacrifice some speed for more battery life and a cooler running computer.
All this to say, be sure you're willing to sacrifice some battery life for the biggest and fastest drive around.

  • Looking for recommendations on 46" -52" TV

I recently bought an LCD Sony TV at costco and was very disappointed . I had adjusted all of the settings  correctly  but the latency in starting up and overall picture quality was fair at best when looking at fios regular TV. I am looking for recommended TV's in the 1200-2500 range but would like a nice picture . My current TV is a 1st generation Plasma 40" TV that is still working great And the service we have is Fios with HD setup box .  Can anyone offer some guidance or recommendations ??

i would head over to the display section of AVSForum to read user reviews of various displays.
With the $1300 range that you have mentioned, you should have plenty of choices for your next television.
If it was me, I would start and end at plasma displays. I have friends and family with LCD's and Plasma's, and to my eye plasmas just look better.
(of course, I am still using a 720p HD-DILA (Liquid Crystal on Silicon (LCoS), which is a rear projection) from JVC circa 2005)

  • I'd like to use the categories from my outlook contacts, i'm looking for recommended applications

i'd like to use the categories from my outlook contacts, i'm looking for recommended applications?

There is a third party I tried it. Didn't work for me because they wanted me to sync my contacts on their cloud. It doesn't work with USB Sync. But if you want to try it here:

Best would be if Apple adds the feature and supports the categories!!!

  • The best CC's for all the different categories. Giving and looking for recommendations.

Hopefully this will help others just as much as it'll help me. I'm looking to add one or two more CC's (maybe more, you know how it is =P) to my wallet soon to end up with a total of 4-5 maybe 6 CC's.  I currently have a Sears store card $6k, QS1 $9k, and DCU Platinum $15k.  I'm trying to cover all my bases to round out my wallet for best savings, utilization, and earnings... 1) Low APR: I already have my low APR CC in case i need to carry a balance - DCU Platinum Visa with a 8.5% APR.  It was super easy to qualify for.  The instantly approved me when i applied for my auto loan.  They offered a $5k limit, i told them i needed a $20k limit, the countered with a $15k limit.2) Everyday Cash Rewards: I already have an everyday cash rewards CC for more of my spending - QuicksilverOne which is of course 1.5% cash back on everything (I plan to PC to Quicksilver with no AF or maybe get a JCB Marukai [3% cash back but really low credit limit] or Citi Double Cash [2% cash back})3) Gas Rewards: I need a gas rewards card since i work in the auto industry and i spend a lot on gas. Considering a Sallie May MasterCard for the 5% cash back on the first $250 of gas.  Only thing about that is i spend much more than $250 on gas a month.  What else would you folks recommend?4) Super High Limit: I'm also looking for an easily attainable super high limit CC.  There's been talk about Lowes offering credit lines in the $30k+ range.5) Rotating Rewards: Looking for a rotating rewards card.  I'll probably apply for a Discover IT card since i have good history with them, paid on time and in full and closed account years ago.  Some people advise to get two rotating rewards cards, so maybe Chase Freedom?6) "Baller Status": Maybe looking for the "baller status" card eventually but this is less of a priority for me.  Maybe Chase Sapphire Preferred or Amex Gold or Platinum?  CSP is made of metal and looks nice.  Amex seems to cater to the upper percentile. Any suggestions to consider?  Other categories i may have missed?

Discover IT is much nicer than Freedom IMO, on a cash back basis (without a CSP). Broader categories. You don't really need both unless you want both, because they are very similar throughout the year albeit at different times. General spend, well QS and DC are really not terribly different. If you have the QS, no reason to really rush and upgrade to a DC unless your uncategorized spend is very large as the difference is not going to be great. As far as gas yes the Sallie is an option for 5% up to 250, then you could have a second card like BCP or Cash Rewards, etc for 3% on the remaining gas spend. BCP does have an AF though. "Amex catering to the upper pecentile" is just a mere stereotype. They aren't any more high end than any other issuer. Point is, if you aren't really interested in their products, getting an Amex just to have an Amex is not necessary. As for CSP, run the numbers. Takes a good deal of spend to justify the fee. This +1 Couldn't agree more!  Unless you are a churner, which if you are, you better get that CSP/Freedom ASAP.... I will say as much as I hate chase bank, you could wait for the freedom to have the $200 sign up bonus, and double app for the CSP. This would net you 60k UR points which are slightly more versatile than Amex MR points. Then you can earn 5% rotating, dont take cash, send points to CSP, then xfer those to your company of choice...and only use CSP for dining/travel expenses. The 95 dollar fee is kinda high. If you only spend 500 a month on dining/travel, thats 6 grand in a year, or 12k UR points. If they were redeemed at their 2cents a point average, thats only $240... less the fee is 145. Not to mention their min spend would be 3500 for csp/freedom in 90 days.  Bank Of America may be your ticket. And I am not just saying that because I have one in my signature. However, they do offer generous limits, I have seen as high as $40k. Their rewards are good but not great though.  Your best bet is a trio of cards like you said.  Discover for double cash back (great for black friday shopping).  How much do you spend a month on everything?  Its going to boil down to which categories you need besides gas. How much gas a month do you spend? What are your scores? The marukai is nice but you have to spend a certain amount first to even begin earning the 3%....scroll down to spending table: http://www.doctorofcredit.com/credit-cards/cash-back/marukai-premium-jcb-card-review/  I recently discovered this and saw you have to spend a min of 20 grand a year just to get the 3%. I am sure I could run everything on a card, but 3% cash back...not great compared to other rewards and signup bonuses.... Would I say NO if chase offered me the CSP and freedom? Maybe...probably not. But still, the 2 grand in 90 days you would spend for Amex ED and PRG, that could net you up to 1500 or more in rewards..... You spend 4 grand with the CSP you will barely get 800.  Is that table accurate?... I wanted to get that card, but if that table is accurate, I see no point of getting the JCB for a college student like myself. On small spends, the difference between a tiered 3% and a 2% card is going to be very small.   I didn't know about this though: For every $100 you spend you’ll receive 1-3 JCB cash back points, depending on which tier you’re currently in (see above). This is calculated on a per month basis (e.g if you make $99 in purchases for a month you’ll receive no cash back points). That reduces the earnings, as on average you could lost the points on $50 each month, and up to $99.99.    But if you can put  nearly all except your 5% spend on it, I guess that doesn't matter that much.

  • Can't access to several sites because when I click a link, or I insert login and password and clickto enter, it just open a new tab, either blank or the same as the previous. i.e., can't save my changes on FB, can't look for a location on googlemaps, etc.

I changed in about:config "network.protocol-handler.expose-all" setting it to "false" to allow me to use Sopcast player (which I added on "network.protocol-handler.app.sop"). But after that, every time I have to, i.e., look for a location on Googlemaps, when I entered it it just open a new tab with the same page I was in; every time I click on a link it doesn't redirect me, it open a new page; I can't save changes on Facebook because when I click on "save changes" it just open another FB home page in a new tab; same problem with opening my bank account, etc. Even here, I could not get in when I tried to login. Now I put back "true" on "network.protocol-handler.expose-all", but, of course, Sopcast doesn't work anymore. What can I do? I'm using Firefox 6.0.2 on Ubuntu 11.04. The Trubleshooting informations I attached here are those that gave me the problem, before I made the aforementioned changing going back to "true". Thank you

I think I may have found the problem. It's embarrassing to find it minutes after posting the message yet I tried to solve it off and on for three days! My brother who is a 20 year Mac user has been trying to help me too. I guess it's true what they say... sometimes it's better to be lucky than good. LOL
I turned off the parental controls. What I don't understand is that the no website restrictions box was checked. To me this means I should be able to go to any site I wanted. Can anyone explain why I couldn't got to a HTTPS page on a parental controlled account even though there were no restrictions placed on it?
It's late and I need sleep. I'll leave this open for now until I have more time to test it.

  • What to look for in free fonts?

I want to download some free fonts (I am a student) to use for some 300ppi print pieces and am wondering what to look for in a free font to determine whether it will print nicely at a high quality. What makes a good quality font? I know there is lots of garbage out there though there are also many good quality free fonts.
    Thanks.

This is not remotely a Photoshop question.

  • Looking for recommendations - iCal substitution (different calendar or task manager app)

    Hello everyone,
for some time I'm looking for iCal substitution/replacement. I'm looking for a multiplatform solution (idealy OS X / iOS / Win). I'm a head of small team (5 subordinates) and iCal no longer suits me.
I'm looking for a task manager or different calendar application where I would be able to manage all the tasks my team has. So far I have found application Wunderlist, which is very close to what I want (basic version is free, it works on OS X / iOS / Win and synces through their servers) but it misses some crucial options (monthly view for example).
Also I do not want to and will not use any Google service.
    Thanks for any recommendations!

  • Looking for recommendations for a good small color laser printer

My trusty Canon inkjet is on its last legs and I am considering getting a color laser printer.
I need it to have ethernet so all computers on my home LAN can print to it.
I am currently looking at the Samsung CPL-315W and the HP Color LaserJet CP1518ni Printer.
Pros: Samsung is smaller than the HP
    Samsung toner is cheaper
HP print quality is rumored to be better
    Cons:
Samsung toner is more difficult to find locally
HP printer is more expensive ($309 compared to $199)
If you have any advice or experience with these printers, I would appreciate it.
    Chris

    hi cejones,
Did you end up finding a printer?
I'm looking as well. I have the Samsung clp-510 and while it's very reliable, the UI for mac is terrible. So terrible in fact that I still have it connected to a PC b/c their UI is much better for controlling colour etc..
i'm looking for a wireless solution.

  • Looking for a web font - advice please

Hi, I know this isn't a DW question, but I'm hoping somebody might be able to guide me.
I'm looking for a font (preferably on google fonts) that resembles Edwardian Script. If anybody knows off the top of their head a font that is similar, could you advise me please?
    Thanks.

Please cite a case where a commercial website was sued for violating the fonts license?  In UK Harrods tried to sue a coffee shop for using Harrods fonts and they lost with heavy legal costs.  Fonts can never be patented and people are free to use whenever they can.
Some bully boys will try anything but people have to stand for their rights.  I am currently in dispute with easy Jet because I have registered one website with name like easy XXXXX.  Now they tried to bully me for using the word easy and I challenged them to sue me.  Their solicitors wrote to me and intimidating me and I won the first round.  They are appealing and so the case continues.  The court has decided that I should not promote the website until the appeal is heard but in the meantime, I have notified easy jet the revenue I am losing because of this restrictions. The court is aware of this and if I win the case, I shall be entitled to millions of pounds in compensation due to lost revenues.

  • Looking for a freeware Font Suitcase viewer

    Hello, all:
I started a new job within the last three months, AND WE DON"T USE FONT MANAGEMENT! I know that sounds crazy, but I am not yet in the position to request we get a font management program for all our work stations.
Anywho, I am looking for a small freeware or shareware utility that to help me view the list of screen fonts that are inside a font suitcase. You know: like back in the days before Mac OSX and you could double-click on a suitcase to see what screen fonts were inside and you could move them out or in if so desired.
Anyone know of such a beast?

Russell,<br /><br />Try the free Linotype Font Explorer. For more info and the download, go to: http://www.linotype.com/fontexplorerX? It is a good font management product, and a number of Mac users who could easily go out and buy FontAgent Pro use it.<br /><br />As for not using font management in a design agency or corporate art department or similar environment, I'll try to be polite: Why not throw all job files together in one drawer? Same thing as not managing type.<br /><br />Now, what I really want to say is...   <g><br /><br />Neil
