Creativity question

Here's my project. I'm doing a DVD for a high school hockey player who is breaking all the school records. I'd like to show a record on the screen, then have a short burst of a a picture of the player flash on the screen, then go to the next record, back to another picture quickly flashed on the screen, etc. Another idea was instead of pictures, or maybe in combination with the pictures, have a short video clip phase in.
Any ideas on what to use and how to do this? One thought I had was to use Keynote, save it as a Quicktime movie and import to iDVD. I have iLife and iWorks.

Sounds like something that you could do in Keynote. If you have the newest version, you could even export to DVD right out of Keynote. I've tried it and it works pretty well.

I'd go for the 1st G, for several reasons: the 2G is only marginally improved (unless you really care about the speaker and the volume buttons), but does not work with several older accessories such as chargers. Performance, games and such is exactly the same, from what I've heard. One thing, though, the 2 G supports the new headphones with mic and remote, that might be another selling point.
So all in all, I'd save the $70 and get the older one, but other people might think differently.

Creative question for motion - caution...longish post!!

hello patrick, special case, and the rest of the gang...
I have (for a limited time...) a macbook pro, loaded with bookoo software, including fcp studio and a 30 inch monitor...woohoo!!!
Now the problem...
1) I am a rank amateur with motion, and
2) I have one big project to get right,
3) I do it right, and work may spring for a mac for my workspace...
So...
I work in the navy, and am working on a graduation ceremony that will incorporate survivors of a WW2 ship and medal of honor winner...what we call high visibility.
we will have a nice stage, with a screen reminiscent of the academy awards.
I want to use motion to create intros for the speakers, (somewhat akin to what you might see on an award show) my simple idea thus far:
use a live type background, add a sparkle or two, and have a lower third for the name...
it needs to be neat, and not draw too much attention from the speaker.
For you creatives, am I on the right track?

imac Mac OS X (10.4.3)

i would use final cut, mainly for putting it all together.
create a neat background, swooshes, plasma or whatever.
something that looks cool, but can be used as a background.
(i like the eurosport-look, sort of abstract and moving slowly)
then work on the names, make them come in, animate them so that they're not too static, and move them out again.
not sure how you're going to do the whole thing when you don't know how long someone speaks.
play it live?
you could render individual movies (background + name intro + name static, another one that has the name moving out again), and time-control the ceremony with keynote.
i've now done a few events, and the main challenge was to build my project in a way that allowed me to play things depending on what is happening on stage.
because when someone practices at home and says "i need 2 minutes to read this text", on stage it'll be longer or shorter, mostly shorter since people speak too quickly.
my first event was "timed" in flash, which was crap since video quality sucked with flash6.
you could create a DVD with the names of the speakers being animated in menus, when speaker is finished, press "enter" to play the next clip and go to the next menu with the next speaker.

Creative question. Alternative to film grain for my render?

Hi I'm new to AE but have learnt the basics. I've recently done renders for a project but then at the end figured out that youtube can't create good video at 640x360 so I'm currently rendering my entire 8 minute movie again into 1280x720. Problem is that it doesn't quite hold up as well, looks a bit flat. So I'm wanting to disguise that a bit by overlaying some texture into my scenes to make them more stylistic. The standard film grain tutorials I see often look a bit too cliche if you know what I mean? I want something more subtle and something that will work for 8 minutes worth of footage. Something to break up the image a bit but more than just some noise overlayed on top. The mood of the film is dark, vintage, creepy so I can get away with quite a lot. Does anyone have any ideas? If you click on the image for full 1280x720 you''ll notice that I already have some texture just from having a low sample rate, I sort of like it, as a base at least.

You can overlay all sorts of textures using blending modes from coffee stains to rust textures.

Creative question - text on recycled stock

Hello!
I am in need of some cretive advice. I am currently redisigning lables for bulk food dispensers in a Wholefood store. We are changing the business name and all associated marketing.
The paper we are using can be seen here:

This is the old label design on the new paper. Previously we were using a high gloss white stock.
The labels are going to be redesigned to have a similar layout to this:

This issue I am having relates to the contrast between the text and the paper. The photo of the almond label doesn't acurately represent the issue. From only a few meters back it is hard to read the label and the whole 28 bulk food dispensers become less visable.
We really want to extend the use of the style of stock to all our signage as the raw & recycled look relates directly to the shopd overall branding going foward.
I would love to hear suggestions and comments!

Recycled blotting paper was in fashion a few decades back.
As I recall, the printing problems it caused were greater than the benefits gained, so people mostly stopped using it, at least up here where I live.
Apart from this, the energy used and pollution caused by reconstituting paper are as great or greater than that caused by making new paper.
On the other hand I fully appreciate the homespun look you are trying to achieve.
The only way you can get to print half decently on this kind of paper is by enlarging (or trying to avoid) small negative lettering.
Be very careful when using halftones (dot screens) as these will tend to fill in.
Bear in mind that you may well be dealing with a dot gain in the range of 30%.
If you are planning on printing photos on this kind of stock you should try to get hold of a colour profile that suits it.
Don’t be too optimistic though. Results will always be grottier than you expect.
This kind of paper is poorly suited to offset printing and you may well get better results with letterpress or flexo.
If you do go for letterpress and are not used to designing for it, you should check on its limitations.
For example, tints that fade out to nothing are a no-no in letterpress/flexo.
I once had a client who demanded beer labels printed on soft stock.
I followed his orders but when he saw the results he backed down and was then quite happy with a photographic rendering of grotty paper printed on fine white stock :-)

Who's got a fun, creative editing idea to jazz up this clip?

So... this is a speaker who does workshops on creative ideas. She helps people come up with product ideas and has a creative product line herself.
The clip is a medium shot of her speaking. She's saying, 'I serve up products, apparel, workshops and tools to help you unleash your creative spirit. " The music underneath is upbeat.
I thought of several ideas but can't quite jell the picture.
One of her products is a deck of cards. I thought maybe some kind of spread of an arc of cards - that come on one at a time, or some kid of checkerboard thing that has small square pictures of her products, one at a time until they cover the screen, changing - although don't think she has quite that many products - not sure.
Or something colorful and creative.
Can't quite figure quite figure out what to do or how to do it.
Can anyone think of anything? Or post a link to examples?

Well, good thing I checked back. It's definitely gotten friendlier in here.
I took the clip down purposely because of the chilly response. I can make it live again if you guys want.
And I don't want to put a misplaced post up. I was just in a fun, creative mood, jazzed about the project I was doing, and wondered what ideas people might have that I hadn't thought of. I had been on the Apple boards all day and was already in conversation with people here. So it was just a quick afterthought post. I have another forum for creative questions but was just curious what people on this board thought. But I don't want to clutter up a technical forum with what is really more of a creative question.
The project ended up going very well. She was happy with the video in spite of the delays. I didn't do anything particularly creative on that particular clip,, but am still open to ideas. I want to use it as a demo clip, and that part still is asking for more than the quick transitions in there now. Passable, "give it a 3 but can't dance to it." I did go a bit wild on the beginning and ending and did some graphics and creative editing, and was very happy with that. I may have to get in and do something fun just to scratch the itch.
I'm uploading her final clip tonight and was about to revisit the other discussion, just to get clear on the best settings for exporting HD. Don't want to cross-pollenate the discussion, so I'll post about that in that thread.
Meanwhile, if the clip is still up, I'll make it live again. In the future I'll be more careful to stick to tech discussions in this forum if that' s what's appropriate.

Missing Name for TemplateBeginEditable

Whenever I try to create a new page from a template, I get an error message saying: There is an error at line 115, column 33 (absolute position 3710) of "Macintosh HD:Users:mkeenanb:Desktop:Website:Goddard Portfolio:Templates:Goddard Portfolio.dwt": Missing name for TemplateBeginEditable
But as far as I can tell, like 115 TemplateBeginEditable has a name.
What am I doing wrong?

It doesn't show me a segment name, only the text ** MISSING ** which clearly isn't one of my segments.
I'm not concerned about the I/O it generates, I'm concerned about the fact that there is no segment name in the report.
Could this be caused by tables/indexes that were created during the snapshot and were no longer available when the report was generated?

Playing a game with NO disk drive?

I recently downloaded Sims 3 on my 11 inch Macbook Air via File Sharing. Now... the only issue is that it will not play unless the disk is inserted... Problem...I don't HAVE a disk drive, obviously. How can I get the game to play properly when its already installed on my computer. There HAS to be a way, this is crazy

The Sims 3 is supported by Origin so it is possible to play it on the MacBook Air without the disc. Here's the problem with Origin, though. It's currently only available for Windows so you'd need to Boot Camp the machine in order to then install Windows, Origin and ultimately the Sims 3. Not exactly a work around. Origin is coming to the Mac and no mention of what cloud-sync games it'll support, there's also no date for when Origin will be available. So if you were willing to wait at a future point you might have some extra options or go the Bootcamp route.
I'll let you and Judge Linc Davis hash out the legal wrangling but outside of some "creative & questionable" no CD work arounds I'm afraid Linc is spot on about the requirement of having the CD present using an external drive.

Software Installation CD for Treo 650

I received a Treo 650 as a gift, but there is no CD in the box. I went on-line and the owner's manual references a software installation CD that is needed to synch things up, etc. Is the CD available through my wireless phone service provder (Verizon)? Can I download the information directly to my PC some other way? The phone looks like it will be terrific... when I can get it fully functional THANK YOU!!!

Upon placing the ZEN cd in my player I was prompted as to what action to take with the CD, I selected RUN.EVE. Then I was asked to verify that I wanted to allow the install application to run. t that point all I had to do was answer the Creative questions to install the software. I have Windows Vista Home Premium and the Creative Media Source version is 3.30.35.

Cleaning white corded earpho

Sorry if this is a little off topic (not exactly a Creative question).
Does anyone have suggestions for cleaning a pair of white Sony MDR-EX5SL? The cord has turned the color of the Creative earphones that came with my Zen Xtra (whiteish, tanish, dirty looking). Sony says a mild detergent, but, they don't say if I can completely immerse them in water.
Secondly, closer to the ear part, the cord is really twisted. Running my fingers around it seems like it might be causing problems with the cable inside. Any thoughts? Thnx

Ive know that silicone spray will soften some plastics and vinyls. You have to put some on a rag and wipe the cord with it many times. We do this at work with electric cords

Installation Cd for zen micro not compadable with windows vis

I got a new laptop for christmas and I tried installing my zen micro using the installation disk. it loads up and says that it dose not support my computer and then cancels. i tried downloading the organizers off this website but they woulnt work? because they couldnt find any software for the zen. I have used this installation disk before on a different computer and it worked fine. Is it because my laptop has windows vista? help!

A few questions before I buy a new iMac/Mac mini and sign up for Creative Cloud.

Hello Everyone,
I am looking to purchase a new Apple computer and sign up for Creative Cloud within the next week and I have a few questions that should be answered before I proceed.
My wife and I own a business and we will be using the CS6 apps to create brochures, Constant Contact mailings, product package inserts, edit product photography for print and web use, and short HD how-to videos. We are not graphics professionals or power users and wont be doing anything too complicated.
Any help and answers will be greatly appreciated.
I will start with the hardware questions first:
I am trying to decide between the iMac and the Mac mini.
The iMac is a 2.7Ghz Quad-core Intel core i5 and comes with 4GB of memory that is expandable to 16GB, which I will do for sure. It comes with a Radeon HD 6770M graphics card with 512MB of GDDR5 memory(not upgradable), and a 1TB HDD that runs at 7200RPM. This unit meets the specs required.
The 2.5Ghz Mac Mini comes with 4GB of memory that is expandable to 8GB, I will also do this. It has a Radeon HD 6630M graphics card with 256MB of GDDR5 memory(not upgradable), and a 500GB HDD that runs at 5400RPM. This unit meets all the spec(I think) except for the speed of the HDD.
Question: Will the mini run the software without too much of an issue considering the speed of the HDD?
Question: Will the iMac run the software significantly better to justify the price difference?
I already have 1 mini(purchased 4 months ago, with the same specs listed above) and will be purchasing a second computer for my wifes desk. If the mini will run CS6 fine, that is great and we can save a few bucks. If my mini will not run CS6 well, I will get the iMac for her desk as she will be doing the bulk of the work in that regard anyway.
Now a couple of software questions.
After reading hundreds of reviews and forum posts over the last few days I have seen many people having this or that issue. It seems to me that most of the issues are because of upgrades from Lion to Mountian Lion after installing CS6 first or trying to open CS3,4,5 files in CS6.

Similar issues are discussed in the Apple forums as well as many other places around the web.
I am not a computer professional but I know enough to maintain my systems and keep them running smoothly.
We do not have any Adobe software installed on my mini and will not be opening any files from previous versions of Adobe product in the new CS6 software. These will be a clean installs on pristine systems running fully updated Mountian Lion OS's on both machines and creating new files from scratch.
Question: Should I be expecting any issues like the ones I have read in the forums and blogs or are these just the normal things that happen when upgrading to new software with multiple hardware configurations?
My feeling is that we will not be having too much of a problem due to the clean installs and no files from previous versions.
Next up, the Creative Cloud(CC) FAQ states that you can install on 2 machines but can't open stuff at the same time.
Question: Does this mean we can't be using any CS6 apps at the same time or just not using the same app at the same time?
Example: PS and PS on both machines at same time = No, PS on one and Dreamweaver on the other at the same time=Yes?
The CC FAQ page says Adobe will add Lightroom 4 later in 2012 while the main CC page lists it as available now.
Question: Which is true?
My mini is registered to me, with my name, iTunes account, Apple ID etc.
Question: Do I need to do the initial set-up of the new machine with all my information to ensure the CS6 suite works on both machines? Do the computers need to be registered(as far as Apple configuration is concerned) to same person for them to work on one CC account or can I install CS6 on any 2 machines regardless of how they were initially set-up?
This may seem like a silly question but I want to avoid any problems before they happen.

I'll try and answer your questions as best I can.
Qn 1 Which Mac.
Ans:- As I understand it both units will run Adobe CS6.
          Which one really depends on what you wand from CS6. If you are looking for high end demand and performance, then I would go for the IMac
          Your Specs for the Imac are right. However if you buy your IMac straight from Apple there are even higher specs.
          You can get:-
                              3.4 GHz i7 processor rather than the i5
                               2GB video card as opposed to a 1Gb video card.
                               Of course such a model will cost you more.
          In the end it is needs compared with money to spend. That is only a decision you cam make.
Q2:- Will the higher cost for the Imac justify copst.
Ans:- Again it depends on what demands you intend to make on the hardware and software.
          But I note you have a business and if that businees expects to high demand and high speedy performance then I suspect the Imac would be more able to provide your needs.
          Again only you will know the answer to that.
Q3:- Questions about CS6 reliability
Ans:- I have been with Adobe for way over 10 years.
         Speaking, only for myself, it is the most reliable software on the market.
          It is true that if you look down this form, like any other and I am thinking about the Apple discussions forum, you will find numerous instances of problems.
          Again this is only my opinion, but although all these problems are real for the individuals:-
          First it is not clear why they have the problem e.g. what have they done or not done.
          Second, they are in the minority of the total users using the hardware / software.
          The only problem I am aware of with CS6 is Acrobat X. I understand it has been sorted Adobe, however it cost me so much work I have removed it from my system and reverted to Acrobat 9
          So what I am saying is that there are only two comapnies I rely 100% on: They are Adobe and Apple.
         So if you are happy with my opinion I would not worry about Adobe CS6
Qn 4:- CS6 0n 2 machines.
Ans:- Yes you will not be able to run the same program similtaneosly.
           I believe, if it is important that you do run the same program together, that you can acquire a further licience from Adobe to do that.
           You would need to contact Adobe about that.
Qn 5:- Lightroom 4
Ans:- Lightroom is now available as part of Creative Cloud.
Qn 6:- Set up for individual machines
Ans:- I do not believe you do. Once you have set up your Creative Cloud account you go to the apps site and download the apps for each machine.
          Each machine downloads the apps and your machine and the apps are registered by Adobe.
         Here is something that you may want to know:-
          Because I was so unhappy loosing all the Acrobat data with Acrobat X I ended up deleting Acrobat X
          However as far as Creative Cloud is concered Acrobat X is still on my machine.
          It is not a problem for me because I am happy with Acrobat 9, it fullfils my needs and has not crashed and lost me all my bookmarks.
          However here is the point:-
          Adobe, when there was a problem with Acrobat X requested that no-one deletes the application.
         Though I do not know for certain I believe registration of the apps you have with Creative Cloud are registered with Creative Cloud in their database. Therefore were you to delete an app, it will still be registered with Creative Cloud and you will not be able to download a further copy even though the app is no longer on your    machine.
          Therefore it maybe not a good idea to delete an app when you no longer have a use for it. If you want it back I suspect you will have to contact Adobe Support

          It is true many unfortunately have had all sorts of problems, including me with Acrobat X.
          That said, Creative Cloud in my view has been a major advance in how Adobe delivers software. I have no regrets with signing up to Creative Cloud and I expect to remain with it.
