Credit roll not smooth

I've been trying to make a credit roll, but it seems that I can't quite get it to look smooth. It looks fine in the Final Cut Pro output ProRes file, but it's after compression that seems to be the issue. The project was shot in 24P, but while experimenting with the credits only, I noticed I don't see the problem when the credits are rendered in 30P. I suspect it's the higher frame rate that smooths it out. I could make the credits separately and place them in a different asset, but that creates an undesirable pause of silence since there is an underscore that begins before the credits roll. This happens with the Final Cut as well as the Boris credit rolls.
Anybody experience this and have any suggestions?
Thanks
Larry

Of course blur is easier, but does it look better?
With that ugly math you can get really smooth results.
And I just found a perfect free plugin the other day (I admit I did not test it yet!) which gives the option to set the pixels per second:
http://alex4d.wordpress.com/2008/10/13/final-cut-pro-my-free-closing-credits-plu gin/
I'd give it a try!
The right amount of pixels per second depends on the format you're working in (or better: The frame rate).

… hmm, well, I'm not sure my translation of a very special term is correct:
    It's about 'Winkelgeschwindigkeit/angular speed'.
Means, the speed of an object ON THE 'FILM', not in real life.
(yepp, digital has no film…  sensor area)
    example:
the lower pic demoes little differences btw. each 'frame' = smooth motion
the upper pic demoes big differences btw each frame = stutter.
the bigger deltas occur due to higher speed of object, or faster movement of cam (e.g. pan), or lower frame-rates (30 vs 60fps)
'stutter', because the eye cannot 'smoothen' the 'jumps' of the object per frame to frame.
    now, motion blurr:
the frame itself is blurred, but the motion is noticed as 'smooth', in flow ....
(hard to explain such a complicated issue in a foreign language! )
higher frame-rates, lower angular-speeds (object vs. camera ratio), OR longer shutter-speeds (to create natural motion-blurr, that infamous 'film-look' -not 24fps, but the then optional, very low 1/48th shutter-speed creates the look!) .......
and: angular-speed, because, when the object moves fast straight in axis to camera (or, vice versa, the camera to  object....), it doesn't matter; does the object moves fast 90° across the cam axis (or cam pans, or ... yougottheidea ) speed creates bigger (unwanted) effects.
    same with a scrolling text:
in case, the scroll is fast, each line of text 'jumps' from position #1 to #2.
When you add 'motion blurr' the text, it looks smooth. although un-sharp!
hope, I was able to explain....
that is cinematography … next step beyond photography.

  • Rendered Credit Rolls Aren't Smooth

This is more of a statement of disappointment, and/or challenge that I'm issuing rather than a question. Prove me wrong here, but no matter how I modify my credit rolls font or speed, and render settings I cannot get a SMOOTH credit roll. I'm very disappointed with Adobe on this and I get much better results in Sony Vegas. I've read a number of suggestions and NOTHING helped. Anyone want to step up to the plate here? Unfortunately for me I'm not getting paid from Sony to say this.
If you can prove me wrong and lead me from the error of my ways I'll gladly follow. I would prefer doing this in PP in the future.

Hey Pete.  Why watch it on a CTR monitor if the people watching our shows aren't using CTR monitors? As I addressed on the comment above yours it doesn't even look great on a CTR. It still flickers. Even if I found a monitor that it looks good on, that won't solve the problem if it looks like crap on flat screens that people are using.
    As for Discovery in HD...
    1) we're a long way from transitioning our shows to HD, and
    2) we really have no urgency to switch.
All of our outlets broadcast in SD. We're shooting more in HD, and most of our NLE systems can handle HD, but I'm more interested in first switching us to all digital transfer and get away from Beta SP in our delivery. Since the first of the year we've finally upgraded our internet and have been able to switch about 80 percent of our shows from Beta to a digital transfer of some kind including FTP, hard drives, or data DVDs, or even standard DVDs. Believe it or not, we were completely unable to get Discovery Channel to switch from Beta.
Now I'm way off subject, but thought you'd be interested to know since you asked. Since I'm off subject we do a number of "paid programming" in an educational format in segments that are similar to news packages. Terry Bradshaw hosts a number of our shows that can be easily be found on Facebook... FYI

  • Scrolling Credit Roll is not clear!!!

I know this topic has been touched on, but I have not found an answer for it. I am creating a credit roll and have tried some of the basics like lowering the opacity, and different fonts, and a little glow, and all this other stuff, but nothing seems to work. When I render and play the credits in FCP5 it scrolls blurry and fuzzy. Does anyone know the secret to using LT with scrolling credits??? It can't be this hard! Who made this thing???
    Thanks for your help...
    Jeremy

Without seeing the files and the movies, no, there's not much we can do for you. Your descriptions could be interpreted many different ways.
The most likely causes are things you seem to already know about: serifs, over modulation of chroma or luma, possibly incorrect compression/encoding settings, unsuitable muliplier in the pixels/second movement rate. Many, many other things. Yes, it's a stupid situation. There is no reason, no reason at all, that both LiveType and FCP shouldn't just know how to produce clean graphics under all conditions.

  • Credit Rolls in Keynote?

Not sure if anyone might have an idea how to pull this off, but I need to create something equivalent to a motion picture credit roll in keynote v4.
For purposes of testing, figure a text document of 100+ lines (roughly 2,000 words) needs to be pasted into a Keynote document. Then animated to "roll" from bottom to top fluidly - for selected periods of time. There should be controls for variable speeds.
Assuming that can be accomplished, the frosting on top would be to have the text rolling over a looping animated background.
Thanks for your help in advance.
    TOR

This kind of animation shouldn't be very taxing on the system, so I'm not sure that it will be hardware-limited in any fashion. And I'm sure there are other folks who are more expert on the nuts-and-bolts of KN performance issues than I am. That said, my guess is that with enough RAM, hard drive performance should not be an issue at all, and that given the relative simplicity of the animation, neither GPU nor processor speed should matter much. I'd advise, as is usual with OS X, to put as much RAM in your system, whatever it is, and you should see pretty good KN performance (with the exception of some specific transitions and animations that require a fancier GPU). I have also found anecdotally that KN performance is greatly helped by running through the presentation immediately prior to presenting it publicly -- it seems as if an initial run caches the presentation, making further runs much smoother.

  • LiveType Credit Roll Text Blurry Shaking in DVD Studio Pro Completed SD

I first created text scrolling directly from inside FCP. The texts appear shaking/blurry in the exported MOV. After trying different font family/size but still getting the same bad result, I did more research. I then created the credit roll in LiveType, imported that into FCP. This time, the exported finished MOV looks great on computer. I thought this is the right fix but after I got everything done in DVD Studio Pro and burned a SD to test on my 50" screen SONY, the credit roll part is again shaking and blurry!! This really drove me nuts!! Well, other texts that I created both in FCP and LiveType appear just fine!! I am trying to export the credit roll texts part as self-contained mov then import back to FCP but really suspect this will fix the problem.
That part of rolling credit texts were shaking in DVD Pro simulation but I thought that's only becuase it was not the final product. Any help will be greatly appreciated!
p.s. I spent the past few hours googling and tried different methods but still had no luck...:(
    Thanks in advance!

Ok...I just export a MOV with ONLY the credit roll encoded using QuickTime conversion, change the compression type to Uncompressed 8-Bit 4:2:2 which was supposed to retain the graphic/text quality better than normal setting. The completed credit roll still look shaking, however. It's white text on black, yeah I know not the best combo but there must be a way to get the text to not shake/blur...no?
    Please help, if anyone could.
    Many thanks...

  • NBA League Pass / Youtube videos not smooth

    Hello,
For something like 4 months I can't watch a NBA game properly nor a Youtube video as it's always kind
of laggy and not smooth. It's watchable, but not perfect (about 28 to 29 fps according to fraps but it looks really sluggish at times)
I even bought a new computer because I thought it was coming from there but the
issue is still there. My configuration :
Windows 7/8 (doesn't matter, doesn't solve the issue)
    Radeon HD 5450
    AMD FX 4130 Quad-Core Processor 3,8 Ghz
    4 Go of DDR3 RAM
    Hard disk of 500 Go
About 30-40 % of my CPU is used when I run the LP according to my task manager
so the problem does not come from there. And it's not my connection as I rarely
watch games live. I tried to uncheck the material acceleration, no result. I
tried to lower the quality of the video, no result. Do you have any idea where that could come from ?
I hope you'll be able to help me.
    Thank you.

Yep blatantly an adobe issue. I think people have just tired of chasing Adobe but there were quite a few posts a while back bemoaning sluggish playback relating to League Pass. Everyone was able to playback smoothly under HTML5 or using smart phones. I don't know if it will work but if you try rolling back to Flash 11.5 it will likely run much smoother. Adobe versions beyond 11.6 have caused a great many problems but they are not acknowledging, see this thread

  • Credit rolls

i've been doing credit rolls using the boris title crawl. unfortunately i've just received a credit roll from my clients in word that's 13 pages long with almost 2000 words. when i copy & paste it into boris, boris just locks up. anyone know if and what the size limitation is. is there a better way to do this? only thing i can think of breaking it into 2 or 3 smaller rolls. however i think then the issue is to get the speeds to match. thanks.

I'd approach this differently, might or might not work for you.
I'd build this as a collection of graphic elements, maybe five separate pages' worth. Place the pages into a tall layer in Motion and animate the layer's vertical position. This gives you the ability to easily rebuild the thing as typos are discovered and contractual titles change, and they will.
The only time I had to deal with a full set of credits, that lasted almost 4 minutes, I built them as about 20 separate objects, IIRC. Making the objects into movies that traveled at the same rate was easy in After Effects so I just put the alpha movies next to each other in FCP. This allowed us to make any necessary edits to the individual pages without affecting other pages or anything else in the credit sequence.

  • Credit Roll never appears?

i'm using FCP studio 2 on a dual 1.67 MDD and a 128bit ATI Rage Pro card. not sure if those are the culprits, but when i use credit roll and then render it...nothing. no text is there. if I double click the credit roll and open it viewer, go to controls, then the text is there. any ideas?

definitely checked it. this is a weird bug. i've seen these types of issues whenever a new OS update comes out or a new FCP update. This crawl stopped working after the latest round of updates were installed; 10.5.7, pro update, etc.

  • Clean Credit Roll

I'm trying to build a clean credit roll that does not flutter or pulsate. FCP basic text credit roll is not very stable. I tried to go via the photoshop > after effect route, but that also yielded something that is not the most solid. Maybe my settings are off. Any tips, ideas or suggestions?
    Thanks,
    m

    Adam Wilt covers this at
    http://www.adamwilt.com/Tidbits.html
in the Character Generators & Titling section.
The speed of the scrolling is key:
    Here's a quote:
You may have noticed a pattern here. When the roll rate (in lines/second)
was the same as the field rate (in fields/second), the roll looked awful.
When the roll rate was twice the field rate, things looked fine. As it turns
out, this relationship holds for all integer multiples: roll rates that are odd
multiples of the field rate look awful. Even multiples look great. Thus for
525/59.94 (or 525/60, more or less) video, good roll rates are 120, 240,
    360, and the like. In 625/50, the good ones are 100, 200, 300, 400,
    and so on.
This means you need to do some maths to work out how many pixels per second you need make your credits move - and how to make FCP make it happen. After Effects includes readouts that tell you how many pixels per second layers move. It gives you more direct control over that sort of thing. The Scrolling Text generator reminds me of the way Avid's titler does it: seeming control without the ability to set parameters you need to set directly.

Just to confirm, you are logged into the iTunes Store using the account in which the balance exists, and the balance is showing at the top of the iTunes Store window? And you're not trying to purchase gifts for someone else?

  • When using a path, jagged lines, not smooth lines, uneven lines

    I am using a Mac, photoshop CS5
I created a path with Curves with the pen tool.
filled it in with a color light blue.
than I use the paint bucket to change it to dark blue.
This is when the curved lines become jagged, not smooth, uneven.
also I would like to use this as a mask, but with bg color changing from time to time.
    any solutions?
    GC

Enable the retain transparency option when applying fills or use alternate colorization methods like using adjustment layers or creating the layer as a shape layer in the first place. Not sure what you mean by your mask thingy. You simply load the selection by Ctrl+clicking on teh layer thumbnail. this works no different than with any other layer.

The problem is Cancellation of credit memo not passed to accounting and credit memo already passed to accounting
Can we delete Billing document not passed to Accounting So i can again Cancel the Credit memo
    it very urgentt
    Thanks
    Rajesh

    Hi,
to cance a cancellation document, check note 388489.
But the status of the original document won't change thus you cannot cancel it again. The solution is creating a debit memo.

  • Intercompany Billing Credit & Debit Note

    Dear All,
I have configured intercompany billing. Now i can able to create invoice for Supplying part to Ordering Party. This invoice creation without sales order na. So, if i want to create credit & Debite memo for supplying party to Ordering party how to create. Because here we are creating invoice wioth out sales order and creating with reference of delivery note. In this process sales order creation belongs to ordering party to customer. So where we can maintain Credit & Debit note for Supplying party to ordering party. I think when we create invoice can we maintain billing type as credit note? please suggest me to maintain Cr. & Dr Memo In Intercompany billing between Supplying company to Ordering company.
    Thanks & Regards,
    Anj

    Hithere,
For intercompany stock transfer if you want to implement credit & debit memo in intercompany you need to reference credit & debit memo requests CR & DR or the returns order with delivery NL. You will define them in the sales area of the supplying plant. Then you maintain the copy controls from RE to G2 / D2 or CR / DR to G2 / D2.
For intercompany sales, the customer returns the goods to the ordering plant. Not the supplying plant. Coz customer doesnot know from where the ordering plant brought the goods from. So in that case customer to ordering plant is standard returns process. Returns between the ordering & supplying plant is again like mentioned above.

    Sivanand
