Creeping GUI death

Folks:
Recently, I've been experiencing a frustrating increase in the number of GUI crashes. Now up to at least one a day.
The first symptom is graphic trash showing up on the currently active window. Pretty soon trash shows up all over: on the menu bar and on --or around-- any window that I bring to the front. Soon much of the screen is trashed. Moved windows leave ghosts. Switching between apps --including the Finder-- becomes progressively slower. Within a few minutes the system is unusable. Rebooting is the only option.
Restarting the Finder has no benefit.
In the latest incident, as soon as graphic trash was visible, I started saving modified docs and quitting apps. As I reached nothing but the Finder running... the graphic trash (mostly?) disappeared and responsiveness returned. This is just one data point. I'm not sure quitting apps completely restored normal operation, but it certainly looked like the right direction.
The latest incident happened after I re-installed 10.5 from DVD and brought the system completely up to date using Software Update. (I also repaired disk permissions.)
What was I doing when these incidents occur? Just working, using well-known apps from generally well-regarded vendors. (Maybe I switch from app to app to Finder to app more than some people.) I haven't added any apps recently, just updated apps as updates become available. My application mix and load haven't changed significantly recently, either. My system is pretty clean. I use very few third-party apps. Full boat of system memory and plenty of free disk space.
So, what's going on? The slow-down sounds like a memory leak, but I'm not sure what the graphic trash means. Well, I guess that's some code writing to Graphic memory, but I don't know what that symptom means.
More precise terminology for what I'm observing?
Theories? Fixes? Places to look? Instrumentation?
TIA,
hen3ry

baltwo:
Thanks for your suggestions. None of them applied, either because the iMac model was different, or the symptoms didn't match.
I don't recall getting an Apple Hardware Test for this machine. I looked in my disti media and didn't find anything. Are such tests downloadable from somewhere?
After I posted, I experienced a plain old freeze, which was really a different symptom. I thought about the symptoms for a long time and eventually it popped into my head to check all the cables connected to the iMac. (With the system shut down!) Sure enough, the power cable was not firmly seated. Nothing happened after I re-inserted it and booted up, but I haven't had any problems of any kind since then, about a week. So I'm declaring this fixed.
How is it possible that a loose AC power connection could be good enough to support normal operation except at random times, and then with symptoms different from just shutting down? In decades of experience with computers, I've never seen this before, but I've definitely seen cases in which marginal power supplies caused erratic, mysterious behavior in electronic circuits.
Speculating: I think Apple designs their disk drivers with a very strong goal to continue working as long as possible in the face of hardware degradation. If the power supply hardware and supervisory s/w are designed with the same goal that would explain what I observed.
Solved!

  • "The Creeping Death"

So, I have this recurring problem where my 2007 Mac Pro (6gbRAM, 250gb HD, OS 10.6.8) freezes up app by app. The first sign is usually that my (ethernet) network traffic drops to zero (I have Intego Virusbarrier installed, which gives me an in/out traffic monitor in the menu bar) - this though my laptop will be maintaining a connection (either by ethernet or wireless) at the same time. It therefore sems likely that something on the Mac Pro is freezing up and killing the connection rather than the problem being with the router or modem.
Soon after, applications start to become unresponsive - as I click on each one I'll get a few seconds of responsiveness followed by spinning pizza until finally the OS goes and I have no choice but to hard shut-down by holding down the power key.
Sometimes I can force quit a couple of apps before everything freezes. Occasionally I can still access menus but nothing happens when I select items from them. Quite commonly the Finder will freeze, I'll be able to use force quit on it, but it won't come back; shortly thereafter I'll lose the menu bar and then I've had it.
I've had occasional instances of this since first buying the machine (1 per month or less?) but a couple of weeks ago it got really bad (Mac Pro would freeze within minutes of restart). I restarted in safe boot and got rid of a whole load of startup items - I'm now only running Intego Antivirus 6, StuffIt and DropBox. Things were stable after that but then I tried installing Google Drive and now I'm getting 2-3 freezes a day (usually after a couple of hours use). I've already uninstalled Google Drive but still having problems, so wondering if that was a coincidence...
I've been running Diskwarrior 4.3 after each freeze and each time I get a warning there were errors in the disk catalogue (presumably from the hard shut-down?)
    Any thoughts welcome...

    Can anyone help?

When you see a beachball cursor or the slowness is especially bad, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.
Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.
Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

  • Help --- Finder Spinning Ball of Death Mavericks not starting

get the spinning ball of death when I select finder from the desktop or select anything for that matter.
I have tried reinstalling Mavericks, after the install I get a popup asking me to install java, regardless of the option I select either not now or install the SPOD comes up.
I then go into safe mode and downloaded java and installed it, then rebooted normal mode, same problem SPOD when you select anything.
I have created another account and that works fine, but not my normal account. Initially I thought it might be something to do with chrome, so I uninstalled that.
In addition I have removed any startup items I had against the user ID in system preferences. I have also switched off spotlight trying to build indexes.
I know my system is ok when I get the adobe update icon on my top menu bar. The boot up process simply doesn’t get to that stage.
Below is the boot log. I would be really grateful for any suggestions. I have tried installing from the app store 3 times now.

The startup drive is failing, or there is some other internal hardware fault. Everything else is completely irrelevant.
Back up all data on the drive immediately if you don't already have a current backup. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional—ask if you need guidance.
Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.
If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair
Apple also recommends that you deauthorize a device in the iTunes Store before having it serviced.
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

  • Finder periodically plagued with Spinning Beach Ball of Death

SBBOD = Spinning Beach Ball of Death
Could someone who understands MacOS X internals please explain to me why the finder needs to wait for an external Firewire drive to spin up to:
    1. Open an app from the doc. (sbbod until the FW drive spins up)
    2. Quit an app via right clicking the dock icon of the app. (shows 'Application not Responding' until FW drive spins up then
    'quit' is the available choice)
    3. Get a running program to respond. (sbbod then app responds as usual when FW drive spins up)
Let me set the scene. I do not have 'put drives to sleep' in energy saver. Spotlight is configured to ignore all of my external volumes. None of my apps use the external volumes for scratch or anything else. I rarely if ever directly save to an external volume from any application. I cannot change the behavior of the FW drive going into Stand-By mode (I've checked with Seagate and the feature is not changeable via firmware or dip-switch/jumper settings)
My only thought is poor filesystem buffer cache management. Problem is even that doesn't make sense. If I haven't read from or written to the external drives there shouldn't be ANY in memory buffers associated with the now in stand-by state firewire drive.
The SBBOD usually only takes 5-10 seconds to go away and Finder behavior to return to normal. I know it sounds 'petty' but it definitely is a flaw in what is supposed to be (and usually is) a very responsive GUI. I've experienced this annoying behavior with the standard Apple apps (Mail, Address Book, iCal, iTunes etc) and my 3rd party apps (Photoshop CS3, Excel, Word, Cisco VPN client. I'm thinking about writing a crontab entry to 'touch' the FW drive every few minutes to keep it spun up as a workaround.
Running 10.6.1 and hoping Apple would have gotten it right with this release.

AFAIK, the Seagate bare HDs don't have that limitation. At least the 750 GB SATA, ST3750640AS, one doesn't have the standby mode. Neither do any in that family. Spec sheet at http://www.seagate.com/ww/v/index.jsp?locale=en-US&name=Barracuda7200.10_SATA_750.3GB&vgnextoid=138697c102ede010VgnVCM100000dd04090aRCRD&locale=en-GB

  • Beach Ball of Death and Freezing Apps

For the past couple of days, I've been having some strange occurances on my 2007 MacPro (2,1) where, in certain apps, the Beach Ball of Death will appear and the app will freeze or hang.  I can be using the app for some time and perhaps do one thing, and the BBOD appears, the app hangs and the only way out is to Force Quit.  It has even happened once or twice with Finder which forces a reboot.
The app it tends to hang most in is Toast, especially when I go to burn a DVD.  It will start the burn process, then just hang (the optical drive will start to spin up-- as if to start the burn-- then spin down and the BBOD appears. A Force Quit ensues.  I can try to burn again and again but no luck, unless I restart the Mac Pro. Then it will work, no problem.
But it has also hung using Mail, Final Cut Pro, Photoshop and especially Time Machine.  I've gone as far as disconnecting Time Machine drive just to see if it is the culprit, as the majority of the initial hangs seemed to be associated with seeing the TM menu "clock" spinning, indicative of TM is doing a backup. Except the backup is taking forever and apps begin to BBOD as it spins.  I can check the TM Buddy widget, which just says:
    "Starting standard backup
    Backing up to: /Volumes/TM Backups/Backups.backupdb"
Normally there's a lot more information than these couple of lines, especially if TM has been going a while.
If I try to stop TM using the TM pulldown menu, the BBOD appears and it hangs, yet the clock icon continues to spin.  And if I try to Force Quit, it hangs (and on one or two occasions, the Finder has even showed a BBOD and hung.  And while I can move the cursor and click around the Desktop, there is no response.)  If I click on an app in the Dock, then the icon freezes in the Dock at its Magnification position and I can do nothing to make it go back. Then I usually just do a reboot and all is well for a while.
I did add two extra Gigs of SDRAM about two weeks ago (from Crucial) and no problem.  I did use Tech Tool Pro 5 and tested the Memory, which tested okay.  Also, I can check Volume Structures with Tech Tool 5 on the main drive and it says everything is good. (I have two internal spare drives and one external firewire 1.5 TB G-RAID) I've used Disk Utility on the OS drive and checked Verify Disk on the Startup Drive and the others and after awhile, it says the hard drive(s) seem to be okay. I've even ran Apple Jack to see if cleaning things up would help but no dice.
The only software I've added (on Monday and the problem started Monday) was a Seagate Diagnostic program to test some external USB Seagate GoFlex archive drives-- these are not always connected or mounted to the Mac Pro. When I started experiencing problems-- and it crashed or hung several times on Monday-- I trashed the Seagate Diagnostic program.  The TM has also been shut down and unplugged as I tended to see more hangs and BBOD when it was in a backup process.  (The first TM backup of the day goes smoothly.  An hour later, when it automatically begins another backup, the TM clock icon spins forever and trouble ensues as noted above)
I'm wondering if it is my main Macintosh drive.  It is a 250 GB drive, about 70% full and has worked fine until now.  Because the Finder continues to work, even though apps are BBOD or hanging, I'm not sure about that though.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!  Thanks!

Do you still have the original installer dvd's?  If so run Apple Hardware Test.  Also since you recently added more memory also run Rember (a GUI layer on top or memtest).   I wouldn't trust TechTool for reliable memory tests.

    Hmm, coincidence?  Maybe, maybe not.
If the Seagate Diagnostic program was the one I found here you probably did not remove all of it.  Specifically the kext's it installs.
    /System/Library/Extensions/MaxtorPowSecDriver.kext
    /System/Library/Extensions/SeagatePowSecDriver.kext
If they are there move them to the trash (proably need your admin password to allow it) and reboot.
If the Seagate Diagnostic program is not the one I found. The do the following in terminal and post the results:
    kextstat -kl | awk ' !/apple/ { print $6 $7 } '

  • What causes death wheel in QT

Sometimes playing  a movie it will stop and the death wheel pops up for 10 or more seconds then the movie will continue for a while and then stops and wheel pops up over and over again.
Also if I scroll by dragging progress bar forward, same thing happens. This never used to happen but now it's all the time.
    How do you fix it.
    2x2.8 ghz Quad core intel
    10 GB 800 MHZ DDR@ FB -Dimm
    OSX 10.9.5
    QT 7.6.3

    Does 7.6.6 work in Yosemite?
Yes, the QT 7 Player v7.6.6 (1709) is supported by the QT structure v7.7.3 (2890) embedded in the Yosemite operating system.
Been waiting for the next version to switch over hopping they have most of the nasty bugs fixed.
I don't believe the QT 7 v7.6.6 GUI has been updated since April of 2010 and may or may not continue to be updated for compatibility with future Mac operating systems while QT X is still in active development. Each version of Mac OS X since Snow Leopard has been released with its own unique version of the 64-bit QT X player as part of Apple's current program of QT modernization and development which some expect to take a decade to complete (if any software can be said to ever complete its process of evolution)—i.e., QT X v10.0 for Snow Leopard, QT X v10.1 for Lion, QT X v10.2 for Mountain Lion, QT X v10.3 for Mavericks and QT X v10.4 for Yosemite. QT X and QT 7 players are independent and both can be simultaneously installed/used under their respective operating systems. Therefore, not sure what you mean here when you say you are waiting "for the next version" to be released.
Just to update 7.6.6 and making sure there is nothing running in the background has not changed anything.
    The problem is still there.
It is difficult to try and help you if you continue to withhold information that might assist in pinpointing your issue here. What movie data rates and codecs are we talking about here? Does the same problem exist when using the QT X or third-party media players? Does the problem exist if you use the QT 7 player while logged in to a different user account? Even if you aren't simultaneously using other applications, how many processes are active while you are attempting to watch your videos, are any of them "hogging" CPU cycles, and/or are any of them returning a "failing to respond" message that might be creating data bottlenecks. Is there a similar slowdown in data throughput when using other hard drive intensive (high data rate) applications? Do the problems exist if you create an external start-up system and use it to watch you movies from their original storage location? As previously implied, such problems can the the result of anything from software data bottlenecks/conflicts to failing hardware that may become worse over time. If you cannot diagnose such problems yourself, it might be a good idea to have your system looked at by a professional—especially if issues worsen or spread to other applications.

i am not an english speaker and i am not an American citizen. And many others here are not primary or secondary English speakers either. How can you expect them to understand you if you use strange abbreviations? Programming is an exercise in precision. If you have a question here, you would do well to communicate it precisely.
At the site [How to Ask Smart Questions|http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html#writewell] :
h1. Write in clear, grammatical, correctly-spelled language
We've found by experience that people who are careless and sloppy writers are usually also careless and sloppy at thinking and coding (often enough to bet on, anyway). Answering questions for careless and sloppy thinkers is not rewarding; we'd rather spend our time elsewhere.
So expressing your question clearly and well is important. If you can't be bothered to do that, we can't be bothered to pay attention. Spend the extra effort to polish your language. It doesn't have to be stiff or formal in fact, hacker culture values informal, slangy and humorous language used with precision. But it has to be precise; there has to be some indication that you're thinking and paying attention.
Spell, punctuate, and capitalize correctly. Don't confuse its with it's, loose with lose, or discrete with discreet. Don't TYPE IN ALL CAPS; this is read as shouting and considered rude. (All-smalls is only slightly less annoying, as it's difficult to read. Alan Cox can get away with it, but you can't.)
More generally, if you write like a semi-literate boob you will very likely be ignored. So don't use instant-messaging shortcuts. Spelling "you" as "u" makes you look like a semi-literate boob to save two entire keystrokes. Worse: writing like a l33t script kiddie hax0r is the absolute kiss of death and guarantees you will receive nothing but stony silence (or, at best, a heaping helping of scorn and sarcasm) in return.
If you are asking questions in a forum that does not use your native language, you will get a limited amount of slack for spelling and grammar errors but no extra slack at all for laziness (and yes, we can usually spot that difference). Also, unless you know what your respondent's languages are, write in English. Busy hackers tend to simply flush questions in languages they don't understand, and English is the working language of the Internet. By writing in English you minimize your chances that your question will be discarded unread.
the main issue here is my questionMy recommendation: learn to do Swing without a code-generator. You gain a much better understanding of the underpinnings of Swing, the layout managers, and you gain extremely good control of component placement.

Hi, I've recently setup a system with the below configuration, and am getting the blue screen of death at various stages during the intial windows install. These occur at various times, sometimes I get to the copying files stage, sometimes not, but never to any GUI stage. POST seems fine, and the D-bracket gives the all clear, my best guess is a faulty RAM chip, but I would appreciate some advice before going out to purchase replacement parts. (Limited funds)
Current plan was to start with a new RAM chip, though I've read since purchasing that these Corsair chips don't overclock so well, so may consider another brand. Then perhaps a small IDE HDD, though I've managed to get through the formatting stage, and even file copy on occasion, so this seems a little unlikely.
Error codes if they help have been 0x0000004e and 0x0000007e (also an IRQ_LESS_NOT_EQUAL - 0x0000001e (I think?))

I have an MSI NEO2 with very similiar problems I've been having a real hard time troubleshooting. It BSODs often times during boot-up. I went through the obvious things, like RAM, PSU, CPU over heating, etc by substition. Nothing helped. I even swapped hard drives, no dice. So I figure it has to be motherboard. I've updated the firmware to the latest rev. Reset BIOS defaults to fail safe and optimized, still same problem. The really strange thing it only does it during boot. If I can get the OS to load, it's stable. I can run benchmarks, play a game of Doom3, surf the web for hours, no problems. Restart, BSOD. Sometimes it gets so bad I give up and can't use the machine. I have a duel boot system with XP Pro and XP 64-bit. Both OS's have this issue, but the XP Pro more so for some reason. I even tried a dfferent hard drive with an OS which has been stable in another machine for over a year, same problem. I was starting the process of pulling the motherboard for RMA when I realized I still had the firewire port attached via pin connectors, not a plugin. Figuring I could have crossed a data line to a power line or something stupid, I decided it needed more testing before paying shipping for an RMA. I also defraged the hard drive with the 32 bit OS which was badly fragmented for a brand new install for some reason. This seemed to help a lot, but it still BSODs sometimes during boot. I'm just really puzzled. MEMTEST runs fine on the system which also checks L1 and L2 cache on the processor which I thought might be an issue. I would really like to know what is causing this. Even if it is the motherboard, I should be able to figure out what area of the board is having the problem. And if it is a flakey motherboard, while only BSOD during boot?  One other note of interest, I uinstalled the nvidia drivers (latest as of 5/6/05) and reinstalled drivers which were supplied with the motherboard. Although I have only rebooted a few times since doing this, it hasn't BSODed since.
Questions I would like to have answered...
Q: Are the latest drivers from NVIDIA ok to use with this MSI board?
Q: Does New Egg sell refurbished junk?
Q: Are MSI motherboard high quality or just a bunch of hype?
Q: Has anyone ever heard of a machine that only BSODs during boot but passes all hardware tests with flying colors?

  • Itunes and Whirling Wheel of Death

We have itunes on the "teacher's computer" in a lab at my university. For some reason if I click on itunes I get the "whirling wheel of death" and if I let it run long enough I get error code 1712. I've tried every combination I can think of from completely deleting (including the plist) and reinstalling to downloading the newest itunes6 but to no avail.
I would like to use music from iTunes in my class, but can't.
    TIA for any help.

    Steve hello,
    welcome to the Apple Discussions..
If the the permissions are not set right or locked files are present... you will get skipping, stopping, and other faults like the 'beachball' spinning forever while the system tries to resolve the issues.
Check that the HD is in order with 'Disk Utility' ...
Run repair HD from original CD installation disk...
insert disk and re-start computer holding down the 'c' key until you see the spinning gear.
At installer level do not continue...
Use top left menu and go 'Disk Utility' select the HD volume with the Operating system on...
select 1st aid... select repair Hard Disk.
if errors are repaired run again until none are reported then verify the HD.
quit and return to the Finder Do not continue with the Installer...
Check the permissions are set correct on the Apple installed software...
Use 'Disk Utility' from Applications > Utilities > select HD... select 1st aid. repair permissions... if repairs are needed run again until none are repaired... do not worry about messages 'we are using special permissions etc... they are OK Quit when finished.
Use BatChmod to set correct permissions on the home ~ Music folder
To set preferences using BatChmod is very easy...
This compact GUI will perform the same tasks as a 'command line in Terminal '
drag the Complete Music folder with libraries and iTunes Music folder inside to the BatChmod Icon and drop....
check path is correct.... tick if not already.... Owner=R W X, Group=R, Others=R,
then tick 'Apply ownership and priviledges'...'Unlock' & click Apply...
provide password... all done very quick...
now check and see how it all works Steve ... let's know of your progress ... good luck ... TP

  • Unable to enter a Division for which I have proper credentials, via the GUI

I have a Division which I am unable to enter, either as a student or as the full site Administrator, from the GUI.
When I log into the main Site page, I see the link for the Division (as I should - I have DOWNLOAD permissions for the Division). However when I click the link (the thumbnail image) I am always, 100% of the time, rejected and sent to the login page. Ignoring that, I still have all of my proper credentials and may continue to freely access other parts of the site.
In the past, I had this exact behavior on (1) a Division "RobotCourses:PSYC" (Psychology), and (2) my main site breadcrumb, which appears at the top of the site page to the right of the "iTunes U" breadcrumb and says "Maiko Covington @ University of Illinois..." For reasons completely unknown to me, this behavior resolved itself yesterday, clicking both of those objects works as expected, although NO one at our site with any edit access did anything on the server.
However, the same behavior has now reappeared, this time on a Division "RobotCourses:CLCV" (Classical Civilizations). Again, I have not done any editing of that Division, nor had anyone logged into it (these Divisions are in a test area where I am developing automation tools).
I am, quite frankly, stumped. But I've done some investigation.
    SETUP:
    The Division has identity "RobotCourses:CLCV".
This Division contains a single Course with identity "RobotCourses:CLCV:CLCV115:CLCV115All-13564".
Both the Division and the Course are restricted to properly registered academic students. I have developed automation code in a login portal which grants credentials for RobotCourses:CLCV to students registered for courses in the CLCV department (Classical Civilizations) and credentials for RobotCourses:CLCV:CLCV115:CLCV115All-13564 to students registered for CLCV 115 (Classical Civilizations 115 - Mythology of Greece and Rome) specifically.
The Permissions set on RobotCourses:CLCV in particular are:
    <Permission>
    <Credential>Authenticated@urn:mace:itunesu.com:sites:illinois.edu</Credential>
    <Access>No Access</Access>
    </Permission>
    <Permission>
    <Credential>gakusei@urn:mace:itunesu.com:sites:illinois.edu:RobotCourses:CLCV</C redential>
    <Access>Download</Access>
    </Permission>
The point is to deny access to Authenticated@ (merely authenticated students) and then specifically grant it for people given a "gakusei" credential for RobotCourses:CLCV in particular.
(Note here that "gakusei" is a Japanese word meaning "student," I am using it in my credentials to ensure that my credentials and permissions are not affected by other credentials named "student" set at upper levels and used by some live users of the site, as we do not have a segregated development environment. It is our lowest level of access beyond mere Authenticated@..., designed to give students access to download and "surf to" Divisions and Courses.)
    *LOGIN: ISSUING CREDENTIALS:*
The login portal code works successfully, and so when a student "Jane Doe" logs in, she is in fact given appropriate credentials (as she is actually registered for CLCV 115 here at UIUC). From the code generating her login URL, I see:
    Issued credentials:
    gakusei@urn:mace:itunesu.com:sites:illinois.edu:RobotCourses:CLCV
    gakusei@urn:mace:itunesu.com:sites:illinois.edu:RobotCourses:CLCV:CLCV115:CLCV1 15All-13564
    gakusei@urn:mace:itunesu.com:sites:illinois.edu:RobotCourses:STAT
    gakusei@urn:mace:itunesu.com:sites:illinois.edu:RobotCourses:STAT:STAT100:STAT1 00X1-13570
(You can see she is also registered for STAT 100).
With the default login URL thus generated, she is taken to the top level of the Site in iTunes, and in fact sees thumbnail links for both STAT (Statistics) and CLCV (Classical Civilizations). Clicking on STAT takes her to the STAT Division where she can then enter the Course STAT 100 with no problems.
*PROBLEM: CAN'T GET TO CLCV FROM THE MAIN PAGE IN THE GUI*
HOWEVER! Clicking on CLCV brings up the login page. If she ignores the login page, she can still access the rest of the site, including STAT, just fine. Logging in again (reissuing her credentials) does not help the situation.
Note that this is not a problem only for Jane Doe, the same thing happens for anyone in CLCV and in fact happens for me as Administrator of the whole site with full access, even.
*ACCESS DIRECTLY TO THE DIVISION BY URL WORKS*
With a slight modification to the login to allow access directly to the RobotCourses:CLCV Division (by adding the handle of the Division to the end of the location), credentials are issued exactly as before:
    Issued credentials:
    gakusei@urn:mace:itunesu.com:sites:illinois.edu:RobotCourses:CLCV
    gakusei@urn:mace:itunesu.com:sites:illinois.edu:RobotCourses:CLCV:CLCV115:CLCV1 15All-13564
    gakusei@urn:mace:itunesu.com:sites:illinois.edu:RobotCourses:STAT
    gakusei@urn:mace:itunesu.com:sites:illinois.edu:RobotCourses:STAT:STAT100:STAT1 00X1-13570
and she is taken to the Division page, SUCCESSFULLY. So, it seems she actually HAS access, as expected.
    *ACCESS CONFIRMED WITH DEBUGGING:*
Writing some code to generate not the actual login URL but rather a link that takes me to an "iTunes U Access Debugging" page for the Division (figured this out by reading some other posts! :)) I am taken to a page with the following:
    (at generated URL https://deimos.apple.com/WebObjects/Core.woa/Browse/illinois.edu.1945806043/xxx5 64?credentials=....)
    Received

    Analysis
The destination string is valid and the corresponding destination item was found.
The identity string is valid and provides the following information:
    Display Name Jane X Doe
    Email Address [email protected]
    Username jxdoe
    User Identifier xxxxxxxxx
The credential string is valid and contains the following 4 recognized credentials:
    1. gakusei@urn:mace:itunesu.com:sites:illinois.edu:RobotCourses:CLCV
    2. gakusei@urn:mace:itunesu.com:sites:illinois.edu:RobotCourses:CLCV:CLCV115:CLCV1 15All-13564
    3. gakusei@urn:mace:itunesu.com:sites:illinois.edu:RobotCourses:STAT
    4. gakusei@urn:mace:itunesu.com:sites:illinois.edu:RobotCourses:STAT:STAT100:STAT1 00X1-13570
The time string is valid and corresponds to 2009-03-12 17:12:27Z.
    The signature string is valid.
    Access
Because the received signature and time were valid, the received identity and credentials were accepted by iTunes U.
In addition, the following 2 credentials were automatically added by iTunes U:
    1. All@urn:mace:itunesu.com:sites:illinois.edu
    2. Authenticated@urn:mace:itunesu.com:sites:illinois.edu
With these credentials, you have browsing and downloading access to the requested destination.
(In case you think to check the sums, be aware I've actually changed the student's name for this example.)
So, as expected, I have access, in fact the student DOES have access, visiting the Division page directly (specifiying its handle as part of the desired location).
*IT'S ONLY CLICKING THE THUMBNAIL ON THE MAIN PAGE THAT BREAKS*
Because the problem is only apparent when clicking the icon for the Division on the main Site page, I have no way (that I know of) to get any information about precisely WHAT is going on, what possibly differs in the GUI-click situation from the "generate me a URL that takes me right there" situation.
At that point I'm fully in the GUI, I'm not sending anything via web services, so I have no idea how I can proceed to debug this from here.
I'm also quite confused at the sudden appearance of this behavior, and the disappearance of this behavior from RobotCourses:PYSC, another Division that was broken in this same way all last week but which magically resumed allowing me access yesterday.
Any suggestions, hints, or advice would be very welcome. Has anyone else even seen behavior similar to this?
Thanks for any information you might have.

    Maiko,
I'm confess I'm still trying to get a handle on your problem. You do a fantastic job of describing it ... but I'm just trying to picture it accurately in my head.
I think, were I in your shoes, I'd begin by looking at what the debug page has to say for the specific destination in which you're interested in fixing. In other words, I'm not clear on where, exactly, this destination points ...
    Destination illinois.edu.1945806043
Is that your site, or the division within your site that you want to fix? "Normally", you do not need to specify a site handle to get to your site within your transfer CGI ... if you say "uillinois.edu", it's enough to transfer your users to iTunes U ... but every site still has a handle, and you could, if you wanted to, actually specify it in your transfer CGI. For example, this:
    Destination uic.edu.1139051993
is for my entire site ... it's my site handle. Whereas this:
    Destination uic.edu.1991288441
is for a division within my site ... but it's impossible to tell the difference between "site" and "division" from just the handle (I mean, if I didn't say "this is a site" and "this is a division", there'd be no way for you to know). So when I look at your creds and permissions on your debug page, I can't quite tell if they give you download access for your site, or for the specific division you want to fix. If you could open the debug page with your division as destination (or confirm that that's what we're looking at), it'd rule out some things.

  • Error 13 = Blue Screen of Death?

Thought I'd try this board and see if anyone knows anything about 'error 13' and Panther.
I have been plagued by this error message which pops up whenever I try to print from either of my printers or burn a CD. This all happened after I tried to load a demo version of Adobe Illustrator CS2.
Over the last day I have tried the following:
    * deleted the apple.com.print preferences
    * reset the PRAM
    * unplugged, unpowered and restarted the printers and their USB connections
    * deleted the printers from the print setup utility and tried to reinstall them (but there too I get the 'error 13' message. Printers won't load but they do show up as if they loaded. Just won't work, that's all.
    * tried logging in as a new user, and then the printer message is "Not enough RAM" to print.
    * repaired the disk permissions from the CD
Generally I've done everything I can think of... except to reload the OS, which I hesitate to do because I have to first load Jaguar, then the Panther update, then the other updates. Last time I tried that things didn't quite work out.
I do have an external backup drive, which also got corrupted as I tried loading the Adobe Illustrator CS2 on that disk too. Dumb I know...
So... anyone know what 'error 13' means?
Is 'error 13' the Mac equivalent of the Windows Blue Screen of Death?
    Thanks for any input...

    Hello Pawel,
I have looked over the service request you mentioned about acquiring 2 PCIe-6537 at 20MHz sampling rate on all 32 lines. In order to narrow down this issue, I think it would be best to try only acquire from both cards without doing any triggerring etc. Also when performing this test, I would only want to acquire from 8 channels on both cards to see if this reproduces it. If this works, we can slowly add more elements to narrow down what the issue is and make us more effective to solve the problem.
I also wanted to ask if you have tried this setup on another machine and if it worked.
Along with this, have you tried to create two Digital Tasks in MAX and try to acquire for the same amount of time to see if the issue reoccurs here? This would tell us if this problem is connected to the driver/computer or LabVIEW.

  • Ipod crashes windows (blue screen of death)

Hi all. A bit of background info:
A couple of months ago the hard drive crashed on my friends computer. They had to reinstall their OS. Thankfully they had made backups of most everything and were able to get most things reinstalled successfully.
Now they are using a 15g ipod connected through a firewire port on an HP laptop. They do not have a USB adaptor, so gotta go with the FW.
Anyway, when they connect the ipod the computer completely crashes to the blue screen of death and does the physical memory dump. There is an error message, something along the lines of a driver issue.
I know this is vague information, but any pointers on how to proceed in troubleshooting this would be greatly appreciated, thanks
    Frost

    hi Frostine!
Anyway, when they connect the ipod the computer completely crashes to the blue screen of death and does the physical memory dump. There is an error message, something along the lines of a driver issue.
we can sometimes narrow this down a bit by checking on the numerical and text codes showing up with the blue screen. (ie 0x[zeros/letters/numbers] CAPSANDUNDERSCORES)
here's a reference on the sorts of things i'm checking on:

can you get that information for us from their PC?
(if the screen is specifying the file that Windows is crashing on, that would be helpful to know too.)

  • Windows Vista Crashing When Ipod is Plugged In. Blue Screen of Death?

A week ago, my computer suddenly started to reboot whenever I plugged my 5th generation 80 gig Ipod in to sync. A blue screen will pop up, and automatically restart.
I do not believe this is the blue screen of death that appeared 2 months ago. I have upgraded to Itunes 8.0.1 when it was first released, and I had no problems until a week ago. I haven't heard of anyone receiving the blue screen of death since the update to Itunes 8 was released.
I have also lost all of my music from my Ipod, so I am anxious to figure this out.
Here is what the blue screen (certain passages paraphrased, the specifics were copied directly):
A problem has been detected and windows has shut down to prevent damage to your computer.
    BADPOOLHEADER
If this is the firs time you've seen this stop error screen, restart yoru computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:
Make sure all hardware and software is properly installed
If it continues, disable/remove any newly installed hardware and software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shawoding. If you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 for Advanced Sartup options, then select safe mode.

Any help you have would be greatly appreciated!

Have you tried the troubleshooting advice in this article?
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1502
Was a file name mentioned in the stop message? usually something.sys That can be a clue to the problem is the Apple advice doesn't help.
