Crelf's Technology Articles

Hi All,
I've created a new semi-monthly technology blog with articles for Test and Measurement engineers. Blogging has increased dramatically over the last couple of years, and subsequently, the number of blogs started with good intentions and then left to die has also risen. That's one reason why this isn't intended to be a blog per se, but more a collection of my technology articles - aimed squarely at the engineer or scientist in the Test and Measurement industry.
Some of these articles have been published before, others are collections of smaller articles, but all strive to introduce an engineering concept and give enough information to stimulate interest and thought in a particular area, or expose an emerging technology to the Test and Measurement industry at large. Hopefully, everyone will be able to get something from my technology articles, from an introduction to a new technology, confirmation of existing concepts, or just a good read to find out what's going on in Test and Measurement.
You're more than welcome to subscribe to the articles if you're looking for a semi-monthly engineering information injection.  To read the articles, subscribe using your RSS reader here:

An Interview with Stephen Mercer - NI Senior Software Engineer
I sat down with Stephen Mercer at NI-Week 2007 in August. Stephen has been with National Instruments (NI) for seven years, and is currently a Senior Software Engineer and, more specifically, the Lead Developer of the native Object Oriented core introduced in LabVIEW 8.20, and expanded in LabVIEW 8.5.  Although not quite a technical article, I hope you enjoy this change of pace and learn a little about what motivates one of the important figures in the LabVIEW world.  Read more...
cheers,

  • How can tear down the growing barriers to education using iphone?

Recently, I have had a growing feeling that the avialability, meaningfulness, and ease of use of educational app on the iphone has gotten worse not better.  In fact it feels like there are a growing number of specific barriers to education using the iphone.  I would like to discuss  one specific "barrier" to education--avialability in your country's app store by using a specific example--Einstien Pedometer App.
Back in 2011, the Einstien pedometer App by Kami was all the rage. Even popular science a noneducation maganize noted this innovation-- http://www.popsci.com/technology/article/2011-04/new-ipod-app-calculates-how-spe cial-relativity-affects-your-daily-activities .  However, now you cannot get this app unless your are in china as you can see from the orginal link:
    http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/einsteins-pedometer/id427443192?mt=8
So I ask you all for help in tear down this barrier and tearing down this wall...
How can we tear down this barrier of country availability?
Is there a way to contact the orginal company like Kami?
Is there  a way to change your country and install it?  Is this safe for students to do?
    Should I contact tech support?
This app like other by Vogt and Kuhn are important ones to me that I have found unavialable in the United States.  Measuring Relativity not just calculating it is important for the iphone future, because phones are currently one of the few mainstream devices to have a guarunteed across the board GPS chip!  Thus, unlike the innovations of Vogt and Kuhn, the Einstien Pedometer is a physics application that is only available using ones smartphone.
This is my tech support submission, which better explains why I felt this was a barrier:
What happened to the Einstien Pedometer App?
Back in 2011 there was a famous Einstien's Pedometer App by Kami.  Recently as of February 2014, I found out that this app was unavailable on the App Store due to "unavailable in the United States".  The android already has a similar app called "Proper Time" by N. Thinsell.  I wanted to include this app as part of my physics smart phone laboratory series.  Specifically, I have worked painstakingly to develop a lab so that students could measure special relativity time dilation using their smart phones GPS chip.  (The lab is similar to the work of P Vogt and J Kuhn which is different from many of gimmick apps, which are only ebooks of text, not actual physics measuring devices.)  The current unavailability of this app is simply another barrier to using iphones for education.  This is why I am very disappointed right now.  Incorporating Android systems into physics high school curriculum is easy; however, I have tried many times to try to incorporate apple products into the physics curriculum to no avail.  It feels like with each successful year there are more and more barriers to using iphones for application-level understanding in physics education.

    Dah Veed,
How?  No really how do I contact the app developer from a foreign country?
Going back to my example, so far I was able to figure out alot of things about the app developer of the Einstien Pedometer app--except there contact information.  Besides prehaps seeking apples supports help in contacting the developer, do you have any other suggestions?
Information that I know so far:
    App: Einstein's pedometer
    Developer's Name: Mitsuru kamiyama
    Language: Japanese
    AppStore Page: https://itunes.apple.com/us/artist/kami/id362020177?mt=8
    Developers really old website: http://playoffline.ddo.jp/app/
P.S. While it didn't exactly solve the problem, your reply was very helpful, so I thank you for your reply.

  • Parse xml document with xpath

I would like to parse an xml document using xpath, see:
    http://www.onjava.com/pub/a/onjava/2005/01/12/xpath.html
however, in the documentation (in the link above), it states that I need J2SE 5.0.
    Currently, I have:
    $ java -version
    java version "1.5.0_11"
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.5.0_11-b03)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.5.0_11-b03, mixed mode, sharing)
Does that mean that I really have to install J2SE 5.0 in order to use J2SE 5.0's XPath support? Does anybody know anything about getting started with XPath, and whether I can just use my existing version of Java? I've never used XPath.
For more documentation, one can view:

    Thank you.

I have copied the code for the xpath tutorial on

I am also having exact same issue. Is there any update on this ?

  • Installing Mavericks but disk damaged, no recovery or safe modes

So I have a 2009 Mac book. I downloaded OS X Mavericks successfully this afternoon. But when I try to install it, it tells me: "The OS X upgrade couldn't be started because disk is damaged and can't be repaired. After your computer restarts, back up your data, erase your disk, and try installing again. Click restart to restart your computer and try installing again." Okay, fine, but annoying. So I hit restart and end up at this exact same error message. And when I open disk utility, the repair button is greyed out. When I try and open in recovery mode (holding down command - r) it just takes me back to the OS X installer and the error message. When I try to restart in safe mode, my entire computer just shuts off.
When am I supposed to do now? Luckily I backed up my computer last night. But I'm a grad student and a teacher. I need my computer to work. Help?

I see the error code on the corrupted RAID drives-----  Writing lastMountVersion as FSK
I've seen that before and it's discussed here a bit
    http://www.sooperarticles.com/technology-articles/data-recovery-articles/how-res olve-mac-journal-magic-bad-error-340304.html
MAC operating system has a feature of journaling the file system due to which the chances of fault flexibility together with providing protection to the file system preventing from the hardware failure incidents and sudden power turn off. The journal plays vital role comprising all the confidential information that are required by the MAC operating system so that it could be returned to the previous working station.
These journals being vital component of the MAC operating system if gets corrupted, leads into serial results. It may turn the whole data inaccessible by means of turning the volume unmountable. Once user undergoes such disaster the only thing that leads to recover the situation is the valid backup as the data can be restored and the corrupted can be removed from the hard disk without being worried about the data loss issue.
While the corruption is encountered in the HFS volume of the MAC operating system then error that is encountered with the user is stated below:-
HFS(3): Journal replay fail. Writing lastMountVersion as FSK!
    jnl: is_clean: journal magic is bad (0x1fd17 != 0x4a4e4c78)
HFS: late jnl init: failed to open/create the journal (retval 0).
jnl: open: journal magic is bad (0x1fd17 != 0x4a4e4c78)
While the corrupted HFS + volume is attempted to be mounted, the above shown error triggers on the screen. The corruption of journal being the major cause turns often turns to smash up the entire MAC volume to an extent along with damaging the command line. Although you may find the disk utility option as well as the command line application facilitated in the MAC operating system which you may use in order to get the issue resolved. If possible try disabling journal and further turning it on.

  • Does FireFox v 16 for Mac OS X have security vulnerabilities?

As I was reading http://www.thestar.com/living/technology/article/1269312--new-version-of-firefox-pulled-over-security-flaw my Firefox updated from v 15 to v 16 on my Mac. Should I be downgrading? BTW, I don't understand why it would be upgrading today if FF 16 was removed yesterday.

    hi JoeMurray
    Fixed ! see the Update (Oct 11, 2012): https://blog.mozilla.org/security/2012/10/10/security-vulnerability-in-firefox-16/
soon you will be automatically updated and new 16.0.1

  • Osx malware

is this something we need to be concerned about in the usa at this time?
    http://www.sfgate.com/business/technology/article/Cybersecurity-firm-IDs-new-App le-targeting-malware-5875155.php

Like virtually all other current Mac malware, it's a Trojan. And as usual, it's attached to illegal downloads of commercial software. You install an illegal copy of (example) Photoshop, and the malware gets installed along with it. This is also how the flood of adware problems you see posted on these boards mainly gets installed. Torrent downloads.
In this case, WireLurker first gets on OS X by installing an infected software download. Once on the Mac, WireLurker then watches for an iOS device to be connected to the Mac, and uploads Trojans to the iPhone or iPad.
Once again, the moral of the story is "Don't download, install, or use illegal software".

  • Does verizon care if I cut the copper wire?

I had FIOS installed a few months ago. When the tech came out I confirmed at the beginning of the install that he would disconnect the old copper wire, I didn't want it after the FIOS install. At the end of the install the copper wire was still up and when I asked the tech about it he said he doesn't disconnect it, he said that in case FIOS isn't the next big thing that he leaves the copper in case we have to go back. I know that after he installed the FIOS line that the copper wire still worked. I had interent and when he was trying to get the phone hooked up via FIOS he was using the copper wire to talk to some people. I don't really think I need the copper, so I want to get rid of it. I don't mind cutting the wire off the house but what do I do with the wire hanging from the pole? just wrap it around?

Now, I am wondering why you would want the copper removed?
In the meantime, as I wait for that reply.
    You are aware that:
Once copper is removed to get back on slower DSL speed to save money, it might cost you money?
    For example at http://www.broadbandreports.com/shownews/88075
    Quick quote
When he tried to reconnect POTS service via a competing provider, he was told by Verizon that a new NID would run him $3,000.
Hint, hint. Are you sure you would to do that?

  • MobileMe security and privacy questions

Hope this is the right forum for this. I am considering getting MobileMe but I'm concerned that my information would no longer be private because it would be beamed over the airwaves.
How private is all my info after allowing MobileMe to transfer all my data? It would seem to me that I am allowing hackers and/or Big Brother access to all my files. Any one have any solid info on this?

    Copied from this link.
    http://www.articlesbase.com/information-technology-articles/wireless-security-gs m-lan-and-wifi-networks-564519.html
GSM phones use encrypted technology that enables secure voice and data transfer during calls.
The same applies to data access via the cellular network.
More than likely you are beaming all sorts of information over the airwaves without a MobileMe account. Are you accessing any email account with the iPhone's Mail client? If so, messages received and sent with the email account you are currently accessing with the iPhone's Mail client is being beamed over the airwaves - via an available wi-fi network, or AT&T's cellular network.
I have not read a single report about any Apple servers being compromised including MobileMe servers.

  • Any good articles on browser technology ?

    Hello everyone,
Can someone recommend me some good articles on browser technology ?
I would like to know more about this in order to do better user interface design.
    Thank you in advance !
    Rachel

    Err...
Good interface design is somewhat independent of browser technology. Or more precisely, you should be thinking about the simplest, most intuitive way for a customer to perform a task and then determining if the technology can support it, not the other way around.
I realize that in some corporate settings, you are kind of locked into a specific technology and need to come up with the best user interface that fits. Unfortunately, this does result in problems and unnecessary work, and generally, you won't be able to avoid it if technology is the primary focus.
In any case, pretty much the best user-interface "tutorial" that I know of is http://www.webpagesthatsuck.com. What they do is look at a bunch of well, really bad sites, and criticize them in such a way that you learn what not to do, and why.
I don't really think there is a similar best browser technology web site, because there are always multiple ways to code/present something and which method is best is a matter of personal preference. For example, ASP and JSP do almost functionally the same thing, and people tend to pick one or the other based on their familiarity with the syntax (Java verses VisualBasic).
Fortunately, the list of available technologies is rather short such that you can easily evaluate them and determine which is best suited to your needs. Off the top of my head, JavaScript and various Macromedia technologies (Flash, Shockwave) are pretty much the only universally accepted client-side technologies. VRML is also available, but not very commonly used.

  • Where is OBE? Why link for articles redirect technology home page.

I have bookmarks of lots of OBE demo. But now whenever I click on those link it redirect me to
    http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/tutorials/index.html
Even the search facility provided here wont work. Recently I got link for oracle 11g new features by Arup nanda from web but when I click on it to open it, it redirect me to technology home page insted of directly to that articles. Even I am not able to search that articles as I dont know when it is first posted...
Can any one help me to open this past link....

At the bottom of the page link you posted above, there is this link - http://apex.oracle.com/pls/apex/f?p=9830:1:0::NO - that will take you to the OBE site.

  • How can I "profile" folio articles load time and memory use?

    Hi folks,
I am beating my head against the wall since last week:
How can I figure out a problematic article (one or more), that causes both Content Viewer and custom viewer (.IPA) to crash on load?
The crash report states that "application took too long to start", in some cases it is "jettisoned".
The whole layout has 150+ arcicles, each about 30 pages long in average, with the total size of 705 Mb. We have about 30...40 3D images there, lots of navto links, embedded video/ audio clips - I think we used every MSO type available for iOS viewer.
All articles are of PDF type.
No custom JavaScript code, no HTML tweaking - just a transition from relatively complex inDesign layout.
At some point, while filling the folio with content, the Content Viewer started crashing on load.
We rolled back and startred re-assembling the whole package, checking once 30...60 more articles were added.
Our DTP guy was backing up intermediate results while adding articles, so I have several .IPA of the same layout, one with less than 30 articles, and several subsequent versions (60, 90 articles, etc). The smallest one works great even on 1st iPad - a bit slow (about 5 seconds to render a page when jumping between articles), but no crashes, no jerky pages, zooming and flipping is perfect.
All bigger versions (30+ articles) crash on both iPad1 and iPad3.
Adobe states there is no limitation in the number of articles and pages per article, but it seems to be a limit which we don't know. Or there is something in our design that causes crashes.
    WHAT TO DO???
The idea to start from stratch again, making a backup before adding each article, uploading and testing is not good. It will take weeks, we don't have that much time.
Can there be a "profiling tool" for DPS, similar to what programmers use when the code is unacceptably slow?
Some switches to run the installed custom viewer app from command line, with verbose logging, debugging, whatever???
Is there any way to know, what exactly on our side causes the problems?
    Need help ASAP.
    Regards
    Serge

Mike, I basically have to do the same. The idea to use DPS for something else than glossy magazine or corporate catalog, is my brainchild, and losing hopes feels like euthanazing a pet, to say the least.
With the only exception: I don't see DPS as an inferior product. Rather, it is a raw product, brought to the light before it is really ready, in order (as it is often, if not always, happens in hi-tech industry) to corner the territory before competitors catch up.
As you could see in other threads, there are no books or training courses available yet, and I believe Adobe team is not quite sure what can and cannot be done with DPS. A part of the minefield is Apple iOS, that enforces certain limitations to ensure system stability. And I am sure, there is a lot of other factors in play that we are not aware of, and probably never will be.
The point of saying what's been said is: there is a price to be paid for being on the bleeding edge of technology. This price, other than spending money for expensive equpment, other than investing time into learning and experimenting, is taking the risk of failure. The risk that it will not work out due to reasons beyond your control. So I don't think Adobe is much to blame here, they are playing the same game. Accept the rules or leave...
    Just my 5 cents...
