Crippled software or malfunctioning hardware...ipod mystery still unsolved

My last post was removed so here is the recap:
I have a 15gb "older" ipod that since the latest round of software updates no longer mounts or is recognized by my mac (or anyone elses for that matter). In trying to determine whether the problem is hardware or software, I switched the connection cable from my firewire one to the newer usb cable. To my surprise, it worked! I then tried several other firewire cables from my friends (thinking perhaps I had a bad cable) and not a single one worked.
However, there was one odd problem that I noticed while using the usb cable to back up my data so I could do a full restore and hopefully get the ipod working with my firewire cable again. The odd thing was that while the usb would mount my ipod, it would NOT deliver power to the unit. That meant that somehow the ipod was mounting but it was NOT getting power over the usb bus.
This really confuses me.
I have already determined that I need a new ipod battery which is about $15...but outside of that, what is going on here? Also, when I tried to do a restore from the latest ipod updater it specifically said that my ipod required a firewire connection to the restore and NOT the usb. Luckily, I had the older updaters and was able to restore the ipod. I then checked it with Disk Utility and did repairs, permissions, etc.
However, after all this, my ipod still ONLY mounts via the usb cable. There is no data on it and I tried other machines than my own with the firewire cable to no success. The ipod refuses to mount, it only recharges itself...so I know the cable is not damaged.
So if anyone has any ideas about what is going on here I would love to hear them...
Either Apple has crippled the older ipods with their newest updates in favor of the usb spec versus firewire OR my ipod and its cable/dock are doing some VERY strange things.
My ipod is "old" but has never failed me once in all the time I have had it. I am a tech so I have plenty of background on what common problems and fixes are for ipods...however this time I am just plain stumped! It seems like it is hardware but then it does not add up, why does it only work with a new ipod usb cable? Again I tried with several other friends firewire cables and they did not work either...
Does my 15gb ipod think its newer than it actually is??? What could cause this behavior??
please share your thoughts and I hope this topic does not get locked or my post removed.

Well! What a very very odd thing indeed!
First question--were you able to use your FireWire cable to restore your iPod or did you have to use the USB connection?
Second--Have you tried connecting your iPod (using the FireWire cable) to another computer?
The issues you're describing lead me to believe your computer's FireWire ports may need to be reset. Your answers will help determine if I'm correct.
Sounds to me like your iPod is a 3rd generation (touch wheel, 4 buttons above the wheel). This iPod isn't capable of receiving a charge over USB (definitely an inconvenience for Windows users!).
Hope I've helped shed a bit of light on things

  • 'Other' mystery still unsolved.

The problem of large, disturbing and obtrusive 'other' storage is still (unnacceptably) unsolved.
After following many suggestions, links, hints etc I am STILL left with an excess of 200GBs of 'other' storage amd no answers, as are many other users.
Is it possible that as an Apple community we are unable to solve this, or Apple itself? We are all proud of our Macs, but having to try justify this is impossible and not necassary at all. if you google this problem you find endless questions and numerous answers none of which seem to hit the nail on the head.
Omnidisk Sweeper, Disk Inventory X, etc, none have solved this. Mail is clean, Time Machine is off, I could go on but you get the point.
As a community, can we finally put this to sleep?
I urge all of the more advanced users to try and assist all of us with this problem, short of reformatting, what can be done?
As is perhaps obvious the issue causes overheating, performance issues amongst many other unpleasantries.
Here are some screen shots to illustrate the problem, the latter being taken just 5 days later showing how 'other' has grown.
    I thank you in advance.

I cannot detect what is taking up this space, no visual representation or logical calculation seems to be working, I do not have that much 'data' in any form on my Mac.
I once fixed a relative's problem by deleting Mail.app backups which filled up an entire hard drive, but that seems not to be the case here yet my computer does heat up and slow down until I delete something, which shows that the 'other' capacity is having a negative system impact, or that is is being calculated as real storage...

The Videos are showed up front 4 months, but now they are no longer to be seen. When you star a video first the hard drive starts, but then it stops and hangs up. I have to restart it, starting with the apple logo....

Here is what worked for me:
My usb hub, being usb2, was too fast. I moved the wire to a usb port directory on my pc. That is a usb1 port which is slow enough to run your snyc.

If it does not work on other computers then I agree with the Genius

  • Why does my 3rd Gen iPod Touch still play through the speaker when I plug my headphones in?

When I plug my headphones into my iPod, it plays through them, but it also continues to play through the built in speaker. Does anyone know how this can be fixed? Thanks

    - First see if it woks OK with another pair of headphones.
    - next, to rule out a software probem:
    - Reset:
Reset iPod touch:  Press and hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button and the Home
button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Restore the iPod from backup
    - Restore the iPod to factory defaults/new iPod
If still problem you likely have a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.  It is liklely a problem with the headphone jack i the iPod.  There are third-party places that will replace he jack.

  • I am unable to update my software version on my iPod touch. It gets to the very end and tells me that my session timed out. What should I do?

Every time I try and update my software version for my iPod touch from version 4.2.1 to version 4.3.5 I get within .5 MB (409.5 of 409.6MB) to the end and an error pops up telling me that my network connection has timed out so that the update could not be completed. I start the nursing program next week and need to download books onto my iPod, but it will not let me download the updated versions until my software is updated. I have tried restoring my iPod but when I restore it it says I have to download new software at the same time, therefore I can't even restore it. I just tried resetting my iPod and erasing all data as well as uninstalling iTunes and downloading it again and it still wont work. What do I do? I need to update it so it is ready for school in a week. Any advice? I have tried calling but as I understand I would have to pay for anyone to help me and I really don't want to do that until I have to.

Hi Jen.  My daughter just compleated her nursing program and is now working as a full time nurse.  Focus and study hard and soon you will be there too.  Now to the problem at hand.  I have the same problem.  I gave up on it and satisfied myself with my iPod without the upgrade.  Reason being I've read so many posts of people having problems after the upgrade.  But I'm sure other factors are involved.  Nevertheless here is the fix most say works to solve the problem:  What ever virus protection you have installed on your computer, disable it.  Then try to install the update. After that enable the protection. I had Kaspersky, and it does it's job well. The thinking is, the virus protection is blocking the upgrade.  Hope this works.   Charlie

  • The software for communicating with ipod is not installed correctly..

Everything used to work fine on my laptop. I'm fairly sure it was after I had uninstalled Zune crap from my laptop when my iTunes started messing up and saying "the software for communicating with ipod is not installed correctly".
I've searched the whole internet front to back about this error and most things I find are from 2005'ish. I've tried changing the registry permissions, reinstalling itunes, clearing out everything that has to do with itunes, doing all the msconfig things, manually starting the ipodservice.exe.
I still cannot figure it out and I've had this error for like 3 months. Only thing that I notice that MIGHT be odd is that I'll have ipodservice.exe running (from System) and when I open iTunes another ipodservice.exe will open (from my username) and then close after a few seconds and then I plug my ipod up and bam, the error from above comes up. Anyone have any clue? Like I said everything worked fine at one point!
    Thanks!

Another thing is that iPod Touch shows up fine...I've tried every other ipod from older 4gig Nanos to 120gb Classics and none of them work..this is really annoying!

Photoshop Elements produces muddy photo prints, 3. View preferences in windows don't hold,  etc.  Anybody at Apple listening?  Anybody else out there having these kinds of problems?

10.7 was horrible unstable so I waited until 10.7.1 and tried it again. Well I have to say that it is still a defective OS. I am reverting to Snow as we speak from my carbon clone copy.. This is really the worst OSX I have ever used. It gives me random Kernel panics for no reasons, unstable airport and hundreds of small issues that are just not necessary. For instance I can't use QuickTime in Lion to trim a videoclip ( the UI goes mad and the trimslider becomes inoperable and hangs the Player window ) while in Snow it is no problem. Itunes gives me crackling sound when the equalizer is turned on, Graphical glitches in Photoshop, games crashing, Preview.app not working with some pdfs, so I need Adobes reader which I never used before.. It is definately not ripe for mass usage. Might 10.7.2 or 10.7.3 fix it, but not yet.
    * and just for the records : the hardware is absoltely ok. Because in Snow it works as it should. ( So many Lion fanbois are talking : "your Ram is defect", defintely NOT. - Lion is defect! ).
    Shame on you Apple.

  • Software update for the iPod Nano 6th Gen

Is there gonna be any software update for the iPod Nano 6th Gen for video playback??

Re: Software update for the iPod Nano 6th Gen
There is already new hardware for the nano (7th Generation) and it would take a hardware modification to put video on the 6th Generation Nano so no speculation was needed, Carl had the correct answer.
My Original iPod Nano received updates beyond it's generation, there is no reason to conclude this would not be possible for other models and generations. Why would the iPod Nano 6G need a hardware modification for video playback? It already can do analog composite video output for viewing slideshows with music and transitions on a TV and can handle full photo resolutions. The iPod Nano 6G seems more than capable from a hardware perspective of video playback, it's just that the screen is tiny small for viewing video realistically for any length of time with comfort. That can be rectified by using the onboard TV out feature, though battery life might be miserable. It has nothing to do with the release of the iPod Nano 7G.

  • I am updating the software on my daughters IPOD touch 4th generation and it is going on 4 hours now.  I know this is not normal.  What can I do?  It synced just fine, but has been stuck on" updating ipod software for 3 hours now!

She has had it for about 6 months and this is the first time we have plugged it into the computer since then.  I can not exit out of itunes either.

If you still have the problem after retoring the iPOd to factory defaults/new iPod then The iPod is likely defective and replacement is required.  You can make an appoinment at the Genius Bar of an APple store or take it back to BestBuy if within warranty

I have a problem with the external sound of my iPod, when I take the headphones the music keeps playing and the ipod recognizes still have a headset connected. how do I get external sound out?

    - Try insering and removing the headphone plug a dozen times or so.
    - Try cleaning out the headphone jack in the iPod.
    - Resett he iPod. Nothing is lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Restore from backup
    - Restoe to factory defaults/new iPod
If yu still have the problem that indicates a hardware problem, likely a bad headphone jack. Yu can make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store to confirm.
