"Crisp" Video question

Hi - I notice that my videos that I prepare for online viewing don't look as crisp as say the videos you see on cnn.com (advertisements) or other sites.  How sdo they achieve such crisp quality with no fuzziness?
Thanks,
Rob

Well, if the "Use Maximum Render Quality" still fails to give decent output it will, at very least, exponentially increase the rendering time. It seems to use some kind ELA interpolation for deinterlacing and Bicubic Scaling which, especially for small reductions (like 720x480 widescreen -> 640x360), will probably not help significantly.
Download and install (all free):
AviSynth
VirtualDub
Lagarith lossless codec
Next, download and install my hd2sd_sd2hd package for AviSynth (instructions for installation are in the .zip file)
Export your final timeline (as normal) as a DV .avi file from Premiere (assuming NTSC widescreen 720x480, widescreen PAR, 29.97 fps, Lower Field First, 48kHz stereo, etc.) We'll call this dv_output.avi in this example.
Open Windows Notepad and create a new text file. Enter the following into the blank text document and save the text file as cs4resize.avs – in the same folder as your DV .avi file:
# EDIT THESE
filename = "dv_output.avi"
widescreen = true
blend = true
# DO NOT EDIT
Try {
FFMpegSource(filename, atrack=-1)
} Catch(err) {
FFMpegSource(filename)
Crop(8, 0, -8, 0)
ConditionalSmoothBob(DeintMethod=1, OutputColorSpace="YUY2")
(blend) ? Merge(SelectEven(), SelectOdd())  : SelectEven()
ConvertToRGB32()
Spline36Resize(((widescreen) ? 640 : 480), 360)
Edit the parameters to indicate the name of your .avi file, whether the source is 16.9 or 4:3 and whether you would like "blended" deinterlacing or normal interpolaton. (there are benefits to both; it is a matter of taste.)
After saving your modified cs4resize.avs file from Notepad, open VirtualDub
Open cs4resize.avs (this is your "script") in via VirtualDub via File > Open…
Go to the Video > Compression menu and select the Lagarith lossless codec (in VirualDub's codec options (Configure), it is probably best to make sure that Mode is set to RGB (default) and that the Enable Null Frames option is off).
Save your output from VirtualDub by selecting File > Save as AVI…
When VirtualDub has finished, open your resulting Lagarith AVI file in the program of your choice (AME CS4, Squeeze, etc) for conversion to whatever format you want to upload to YouYube

  • Still can't get good, crisp, video upload and export

I have read the HD express manual, read the articles by Ken Stone and my video uploads are still not that crisp. When I export the MOV to my desktop it looks perfect, every detail. My original video is crytsal clear, beautiful, but when I upload it to "My Space" it looks a bit fuzzy or flat. Now I know what you're going to say, "it's MY SPACE, but you know what, it's not. There are plenty of very clear and crisp videos from musicians and music videos on MY SPACE that are clear as day and crisp - so I don't agree it's MY SPACE. My Space allows for .MOV/Quicktime uploads - 100MB. I tried H.264, still looks flat and washed out. I tried Sorenson, still looks flat. What's confusing me is the frame rate and key frame rate I should set it at for a simple 320 x 240 upload and all the other detailed settings that are optional. What are my best option, step by step. I have exhuasted myself with this - up until 2 a.m. for 4 days. Please help. I have tried so many options. Thank you for your time. Sheila

    Sheila,
What is the source of the original video (original capture from DV camera, Quicktime video, rip from DVD ...)? What settings are you using when you export to your Desktop as a MOV? When you say it's crystal clear, what are you watching it on? Is the MOV file what you are uploading to MySpace, or are you doing a different export for uploading; if so, what settings are you using for that export?
What versions of FCE and QT do you have installed on your Mac? And what are the model & specs of your Mac?

  • With Premiere elements 11, when Publish/Share (saving) a finished video, selecting H.264  .mov file type, what are the recommended Codec and Aspect settings for a crisp video and a small file size?

We will customize a very detailed reply, but
    (a) What are the properties of your source media?
    (b) What did you or the program set as the project preset to match the properties of the source media?
    (c) What specific requirements do you have for this H.264.mov export file?
File size can be a compromise between bitrate, file size, and quality.

  • Help!!! HD video question, answers needed

    Hey guys.
I just received a 5th generation iPod Touch as a Christmas gift, but I have one quick question about it. When playing videos on YouTube, how can I make them not HD? On my old iPod Touch (it was a 1st gen iPod) it didn't have a Retina Display, so videos weren't played in HD. I assume that videos on my new iPod automatically are, because everything looks very, very crisp on the Retina display. I have selected "Never play HD videos" on my computer in my YouTube account, but I can't find a button like that on the iPod.
I did a test to make sure it wasn't the internet receiver of my new iPod, and indeed it isn't. In fact, other things on the internet besides YouTube videos seem to load quicker on my new iPod touch. It's just these infernal videos causing the problem.
I'd post about this on the Google Forums, but the Apple Forums are much better. ^__^ Thanks in advance!

most of the cards are HD SDI out on BNC connectors. blackmagic makes a box called HD link that allows an HD SDI signal to be mapped 1:1 pixel wise to either DVI-D or HDMI. Your monitor will need to be 1920 x 1080+ for it to work. It Appears you will need both the card and the adapter. I'm using a Kona2 and the hdlink for the client monitor and it works fine. I use a real HD mon for critical evaluation. the info re this adapter and recommended monitors is here http://www.blackmagic-design.com/products/hdlink/

  • Apple TV Streaming Video Question?

I don't know where to post this question but seeing ITunes is part of this query I will try here. I have a combination wired/wireless home network. Two laptops, one a IBook G4, and a Dell desktop. The Laptops are wireless while the desktop is wired. I have a Linksys wired/wireless router for this configuration. I have a passing interest in the Apple TV but I have everything related to ITunes on the desktop as that is my primary computer. My wife and daughter use the laptops. None of the computers are configured to communicate with each other. They just have access to the internet via the router and cable modem. My question is this...If I want to stream from the desktop to the Apple TV how would I do it? Is the fact the the router can do wireless enough and it would automatically sync to the Apple TV or do I have to modify my network for sharing? I question whether the two units will see each other without some changes in my network. If so, how do I do that? I thought about getting a USB wireless adapter for the desktop but I don't want to have to keep disconnecting the Ethernet cable every time I go wireless just to stream the video. I also hate to buy an adapter in addition to the Apple TV. Just an added cost. Any thoughts on this.

Never mind. I re-posted in the new Apple TV forum.

  • 64bit os video questions

I've put 2003 64bit on an old ide drive.  Used the workstation set up guide from another thread-- video accelerated, dx9b in place.  Audio works, lan works (thx for the driver links) -- picked up satellite internet through ICS on another machine (W2K) automatically.  But took a while to find the right security settings to let other puters  access 2003. OS even correctly installed a logitec wireless joystick I forgot to unplug, without asking for any drivers! Oh, installed the via beta drivers.
    A few questions/issues:
How can you tell if the via drivers installed?  The via setup program lists audio codecs, but no others.
How can the OS video drivers work?  Why don't they need to be 64bit?
I've installed nothing from ati for the 9700pro --- and get 5100 on 3dmark2003 (340).  Two issues -- first, 3dmark shows direct x as version 6.  I saw the thread about 64 bit vs regular dxdiag, but either way I try it, I still get dx6 in 3dmark, while it's dx9b in dxdiag????
Second,  I toyed with agp aperture size in bios to see if the score could climb to other's posted levels.  Systems reboots constantly (during the first windows startup screen -- the one that has the little bar moving across the screen) if set above or below 128???
Sorry for the rookie questions....  thx,  Mark

    Thx Bas,
yea, time to toy with xp64 now.
But, other than a score of only 5100, and dx listing as version 6, things work pretty well.  Kinda surprising, given the driver situation.      Mark

  • Mpeg-2 flags, dvdsp, and 23.976 video question

    just got through this thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=9786956
and have a remaining question. i looked at the m2v file in
    mpeg streamclip and i see:
    Video Tracks:
    224 MPEG-2, 720 × 480, 4:3, 23.976 fps, 7.70 Mbps, upper field first
is the 'upper field first' just a flag to tell how to deal with
this file? or is it stating that the file is interlaced with the
    upper field first?
the intent is to make a progressive dvd at 23.976. the original
material is film, captured and edited at 23.976, progressive. the
material was captured off of an old projector, a frame at a time,
with a digital still camera, so the original has no interlacing
or fields. this went to make an image sequence, which was rendered
to a qt movie at 23.976, also progressive, no fields. it was then
output through compressor to the m2v file which produced the mpeg
streamclip stream info dialog quoted above.
    thanks,

    Yes, it's just a flag.

  • Mac pro video questions

I'm thinking about getting one or more of the mac pro videos to supplement the logic manual in my attempt to get a better grasp of the program and its capabilities and am looking for some advice. Although I'm partially temped to just buy the whole bundle, adding $200 to the amount I'm spending on music gear in the next couple months (I'll be buying monitors and a firewire interface) is probably not a good idea, and there are some videos that I don't expect I'd use at all (at least not any time soon). Addionally, I am aware that a great deal can be learned through experimentation, but that a good course or reference guide will provide a much faster learning process for me, and teach me things I won't figure out on my own.
Basically, I'm trying to decide whether to simply get the 101 video or the producer's bundle. Here's a basic overview of what I've used Logic for so far, and what I expect to do in the near future:
-primarliy small projects--only a few minutes in length, no more than 12 tracks
-exclusively Logic's plugin instruments and effects thus far, but intend to start using some live audio as well (though VIs will still make up the majority of the music)
-I've started to work on a couple short student film projects, and plan to do more in the future--for right now, I'm content with scoring for smaller instrumentation while still developing compositional skills.
My big question is about use of the environment and whether or not I should get the corresponding video. I know that this is an extremely useful tool, and yet with what I've been doing so far, I haven't needed to deal with it. Perhaps I'm missing things that I could be doing using it for, but so far I've found that everything I've needed can be found in the audio mixer. I'm sure that somewhere down the road I'll want to be familiar with the environment's functions, but I'm not certain that I need it now with my current setup. If someone could clarify some of the environments uses that would be beneficial to my current needs, that would be super. This may determine whether or not I go for the producer's bundle.
I know the obvious answer is most likely "the bundles are worth the added expense," and would certainly agree, but I'm going into poor/in debt student mode soon, so I need to be careful. Thanks.

I guess the main issue here is whether I should get them all now or get them gradually. Obviously, the general feeling here is that I should just go for it, and given the money I'd save all around by getting the main bundle, it makes sense. However, I feel that, for the projects I've been working on until now and will have in the near future, there are videos I could do without. And given my financial situation (aka I work at a video store and will soon have massive student debt), it might be best to wait on those.
So I'm wondering how essential certain elements are to general versatility in using Logic, so I can decide whether or not I need them right away. For example, I'm planning on using the native instruments bundle for samples, so I'm not sure that I really need the EXS tutorial. And I've just realized that I do actually use the environment all the time, I just forgot that the audio mixer is technically part of it--so that tutorial would probably be very useful.
Hypothetically, if I were to choose 1 or 2 tutorials (in addition to 101) to buy, and given the general overview of how I've been using Logic, which ones should they be?

  • Replacing Apple TV with Xbox 360, Video Questions

I have had an ATV for a little over a year and thanks to Handbrake I now have an incredible Movie Library over 600 flicks ripped for ATV with the .m4v extension. This month I am getting an Xbox 360 and would like to use it in place of my ATV and move the ATV to another room. I have been doing my research and everything says I should use Connect 360 or Rivet to make contact between my iMac and Xbox 360. Though I have read that movies with the extension .m4v will not read. I have read on various sites that I could just change the extension to .mp4 or .avi and it will work fine. Though alot of the data out there on connect 360 and Xbox 360 streaming seems to be outdated and I can't tell what has been fixed by updates. so... my questions are,
    1. Will my movies stream to xbox 360 via connect 360 in the .m4v format?
2.If no, can I just change the extension to .mp4 or .AVI? (I changed the extension from .MP4 to .m4v on some movies when I got the ATV due to some recognition issues in itunes last year and had no problem)
    3. If I change the extensions will my ATV still be able to play these videos from elsewhere in the house?
    4. Will it all just work flawlessly with no problems thanks to amazing updates from all parties?

I wanted a next gen game system. Part of the way I could convince my wife to let me get an xbox (Im whipped) was to offer to move the ATV to the bedroom so she could view our media in there. Since the Xbox has media center qualities I figured I would take atvantage of them. Now I trying to figure out the best way to get both working.

    2. I dont know how you do this slide show but I presume that it can happen if you use LCD display and TV at the same time. Try to set TV only.

  • Basic VT / Video Question

I am upgrading my CM to v4.2 this month and looking to do a limited implemenation of some video. I have read the basics on VT Advantage solution and had some questions I can't seem to find the answers to:
    1. Besides the obvious desktop software and hardware (camera) installation, what additonal configuration changes do I need to make to CM/Unity/gateways to get video working in the environment?
    2. What kind of additional load is now placed on the network with video and what will this do to my current bandwidth configurations?

    Michael,
First off you should check out the IP Video Telephony SRND if you are thinking about deploying video. Here is the link. (It's a 4.1 reference but should be 99% the same for 4.2).
    http://www.cisco.com/application/pdf/en/us/guest/netsol/ns268/c649/ccmigration_09186a00804ff6ba.pdf
Somewhat brief answers to your questions.
    1. QoS for video on all network devices. The above guide discusses this but the Enterprise QoS SRND is the best reference. Switched only VT advantage isn't that hard. If you have WAN links then the LLQs should be configured independantly for video and voice(still only one llq though but this will ease admin and give the ability to police the video). Call Manager locations can be created to help enforce Call Admission Control of video calls. Provisioning the bandwidth is going to be one of the harder things to configure.
ACLs will need to be adjusted for PC/Cam to Phone communication. The phone proxies the connection for the Camera and determines the camera via CDP (local on the phone switch) and then sets up a TCP connection traversing L2 vlans to L3 router and back. So if you have Phone acls they need to be adjusted. Again this is referenced in the above document.
Regions for video types. You have a few options on video quality. This response will also answer 2. You can choose Cisco wideband, 7mps each direction for the highest quality and low amount of system overhead on the pc cpu. Of course this takes up a total 14mb for video. Should only be used on local lan. Then you have increments of h263. They range from 128 up to 1536. The higher the bandwidth the better the quality and more cpu on the local pc. You will need to use regions to set the desired video codecs and locations to enforce the bandwidth the codecs require.
Lastly multipoint conferencing and other video endpoint integration. If you want conference with video you need to add MCUs. Currently (not sure on 4.2) CCM has a limitation on determining Video conference resources in an intelligent fashion. Essentially you need to have any video MCUs at the top of your MRGLs in CCM. This leaves the potential for Audio only conferences happening on very expensive video conference bridges. This calls for Device Pool and MRGL design changes for people who really only need multi-point video conferences.
    Read that SRND, great resource.
    Please rate any helpful posts
    Thanks
    Fred

  • Quicktime playing multiple videos question

    Hello Everyone.
This is probably more of a html/java/flash based question but I thought I would start here as it revolves around the QT Player.
    I have a webpage
    http://www.drewwfilms.com/Temp/Ket/KetWedding.html
On this page is the QT Player.
Beneath the player are 3 buttons. When a viewer clicks one of those buttons I want it to load the respective video related to that button into the player without the browser loading a new page. Is this possible?
Can someone steer me the right direction? Or help me out? I'm not even sure how to google search this. I tried Multiple Videos, 1 QT player Web - and I didn't get anything that helped.
    Thanks!

I've been having this truly obnoxious problem ever since I installed Lion. Whenever I open a Quicktime video or a preview jpeg (and sometimes a Word document) - the last two or three documents I've viewed in these programs also open.
This is the normal default mode for Lion which now "remembers" what documents (files, movies, images, etc) were opn when you last "Quit" each application. Either learn to close the documents before "quitting" the app or turn this feature off. (I.e., deselect the "System Preferences > Personal > General > Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps" option.)

  • New Switcher digital video questions

    Hi all,
I am a new switcher as of 2 weeks ago when I picked up a new iMac. So far I love it but I do have a few questions. I imported a TON of miniDV video (150GB). I noticed on one tape that the clock had been set wrong. It now shows up in the wrong folder under iMovie. Any way I can change the files to reflect the right date so it gets put in the right place?
Also, I just tried to run iDVD. It will not run, it seems to just start and quit. Anyone else have this problem?

Unix provides a function known as Touch which will modify the dates modified and created for files. You can learn more about it here:
    http://www.osxfaq.com/man/1/touch.ws
If you open the application Terminal in Applications -> Utilities, and drag the said file after inserting the touch command of your choice (providing a space between the complete command sequence and allowing the path of the file to show up), and then hit the enter key, you will be able to modify the date created and modified on the Finder. I don't know how iMovie sequences its own folders, but that's how to change the Finder info for the file.
If iDVD doesn't work you may have insufficient space to create a temporary file, or something else is the matter. How much free space do you have? Is your new iMac one with a Superdrive according to the box?

  • Syncing Videos Question

If I sync a video that's on my PC to the iPod, I believe iTunes shrinks it as it's copying it to the iPod which makes sense since you don't want huge videos (or pictures) copied there.
My question is, what happens when it syncs back to the PC; will it destroy by overwriting the original video on my PC to that from the iPod (which is much smaller)? Same thing for pictures.

    Hello Rediance,
If I sync a video that's on my PC to the iPod, I believe iTunes shrinks it as it's copying it to the iPod which makes sense since you don't want huge videos (or pictures) copied there.
Yes that is correct. iTunes will shrink/optimize the resolution for both photos and videos so that they will display correct on your iPod.
My question is, what happens when it syncs back to the PC; will it destroy by overwriting the original video on my PC to that from the iPod (which is much smaller)? Same thing for pictures.
If you copy these videos and such back to your computer, these versions will still only be in their smaller resolution and iPod format. Why would you sync photos and videos back to your computer if they already stored on your computer?

  • Best settings for exporting crisp video/graphic from iMovie to YouTube?

Hi, I am working on a video for a client and after viewing on YouTube they had some issues with the type not looking "crisp," and I'm not sure how to fix it, not sure if it's a YouTube thing or something I am doing wrong.
I am working in iMovie 6/HD on OS 10.4.11. I do my "type slides" in Photoshop and import them into the iMovie as photos (JPGs). I know some text/titles can be done in iMovie but there is very little control I have over what goes where, so by making my type slides in Photoshop I have more creative control to do what I want. I have done tests and it doesn't seem to matter what resolution the Photoshop files are when they're imported, the results are always the same.
If anyone has a better suggestion for doing the type slides I'd gladly welcome them, but I think what I really need to know is the following:
What are the best expert settings to export my iMovie file as, so that when I upload to YouTube, the quality stays fairly crisp? Or does YouTube's compression just negate anything I can do on my end?
I have googled and found settings recs on other sites and other boards and tried a bunch of them and my results aren't any better than my original effort.
From another post on this board I discovered I could play with the Filters setting when exporting, and I have set that to Sharpen and also used the Brightness filter to lighten the video (it was a little dark). I uploaded to YouTube and I think it is a little better, but would still love the info if anyone has a guaranteed rec for correct settings for YouTube video from iMovie HD/6.

    Hello Brian,
Have you tried de-interlacing before exporting?
Sometimes, when I'm in a rush, I would expand the Canvas/Viewer (viewed at 100%), pick the clearest frame, and do a screen capture.
For example, with the captured image (in Photoshop), I have a marquee preset at 640x480 (NTSC). I created an action to crop, resize to 720x480, then set the Pixel Aspect Ratio to NTSC.
